Review: Scott Monteith is the Berlin-based but Canadian-born artist best known as Deadbeat, stepping out with new alias Ark Welders Guild. It is an audio-visual performance and recording project with Italian singer and curator Letizia Trussi, whom he met in winter 2021 and has since formed a strong creative bond. They work in Trussi's Rooms of Kairos studio and have already cooked up two album length pieces that come on Monteith's BLKRTZ imprint. Mons Clepsydra is the first and is an epic drone in four parts with string recordings permeating the moody, grainy, heavy atmospheres.

Review: Den Helder is the northernmost city in Holland, is surrounded by water and borders the North Sea. With a military history dating back to the 16th century, it is also the most bombed city in the Netherlands and was nearly destroyed during World War II. The Third of May was written and recorded in 2020 over six days in an old pumping station located in the dunes of Huisduinen near Den Helder. The story behind the album is set in this historic city, weaving its tumultuous past into a vivid, imagined narrative inspired by the area's rich and tragic history. It's as much of an emotional rollercoaster as you would expect given the concept.

Review: Not just a clever name, At Issue takes its title from the Brooklyn venue this incredible album was recorded in, namely Issue Project Room. For those who don't recognise the musicians involved, Kim Gordon is an icon of discordant, white noise-y rock 'n' roll, best known as a member of Sonic Youth - one of the most iconic guitar acts to emerge in the 1980s.
That might be a red herring in this context, though, because at the New York address in question Gordon was joined by legendary blues minimalist maestro, Loren Connors. The result is a hybrid work that's patient, sophisticated, utterly mesmerising and - for want of a better, less fawning word - close to perfection. Its roots lay in their shared practice of free improvisation on viola and cello and flourished into a unique neophonic orchestral expression. That makes For Translucence both stimulating and soothing - a very alive form of musical meditation where layers of acoustic strings, wispy synths, evocative field recordings and radio and sine waves intertwine and grow while mesmerising you even more. Review: Braulio Lam's latest record is a unique outing, spanning pensive ambient dub and trip-hop moods, and cherrying them with an added visual element in the form of a photography insert. Born on the border region of San Diego and Tijuana, Lam's repertoire works in an expressly brooding sound that threshes its inspirations from the close but separate apposition of these two cities. The sense of a polemic being is a central theme of Lam's work; this is not only evident in his practice, which drifts back and forth between music production and photography, but also in the sonic content of Close Up itself, which drifts between depth-scouring electronica and Pacific folk in quick step, revealing them to be dialectically adjoined. Our favourites here have to be 'Buena Vista Social Dub', a crystalline immersion in dub and vocal etherics, and 'Mirror', and 'Monika', which lends a seething tape hue to a slowly moving slice of Latin blues.

Review: An overview of Laraaji's earliest works, Glimpses of Infinity gathers selections from his 1978 debut Celestial Vibration, and six additional studio sessions from the era. This is a condensed version of the 2023's sold out 4xLP Boxset, perhaps among which the most notable track has been 'Segue To Infinity', the infamous 20-minute pan-piper (we intend the double meaning of the term 'pan', as its many wind instruments stretch out in a beautifully prostrated fashion, extending over both the entire stereo field and the entire length of the song). And though Laraaji's many multi-instrumental amusements are ambitious, the record never falls afoul of grandiosity or dilettantism, retaining that hard-to-achieve mix of humility and commitment to the sound, all throughout; our favourite 'glimpse' is the peek into his 'Koto' session, for which the infamous Japanese string instrument is put to work with total dexterity. Full of discovery and wonderment, Glimpses of Infinity is a miraculous chronicle of new age's most fabled artist.

The over-arching theme is one of the inescapable nature of change, as crystallised in the crumbling Croatian hotel Lattimore references in the album title. It goes without saying the musical results are achingly beautiful, nuanced and fathoms deep.

Review: .Oh wow. Brussels-based Maloca label boss Le Motel has created something really beautiful here. Utilising musique concrete principles, and a renowned ear for pianos and contemporary classical, experimental electronica, ambient and the like, Odd Numbers / S? L? is an odyssey in all senses of the word. Made from time on roads less traveled and the people and places encountered en route, it also feels like an aural adventure in its own right. Catalysed by time spent in Vietnam, arriving into the sprawling colonial districts of Hanoi, then venturing out to Hmong communities in mountainous areas close to the Chinese border, those he met and engaged with have been directly involved in the final album here - making this a vast exercise in collaboration. Noisy kitchens, quiet fields, personal conversations, the laughter of a village square on a weekend morning, meet beats, bass, heavy future cuts, serenity, and bliss. 1000% yes.

Review: Legendary German experimental label Mille Plateaux is back this week, with a fascinating album by Melody Tomb which is a collaboration between Tokyo artist Teruyuki Kurihara and London drone pop band The Leaf Library. Story has it that back in March 2020, The Leaf Library sent Kurihara some material to play with, in the hope that a collaboration would be born. He was indeed receptive, resulting firstly in the track 'Kite Beach' which was featured on the band's Objects Forever compilation in 2021, with the rest of the album slowly appearing over the next year that takes in drone, soundscapes, minimal techno and industrial noise throughout its eight tracks. The artists hope to continue the collaboration with another album in the near future.

Review: The solo project of Swedish musician Sofie Herner, Leda is an experimental project mainly dedicated to roomy, claustrophobic freakouts, fashioned out of a distinctive form of guitar playing, among other tinkerings. Now a well-known name in the Gothenburg scene, Herner's proximity to her local DIY underground is abundantly clear. It feels just as reflective in the sound of her latest project here, Neuter, which sounds like a gargantuan woodwork project subsuming a collective consciousness. Building off the natural footprints trailed by not only her former output, but also her involvement in bands like Neutral and Enhet For Fri Musik, this LP comprises nine tracks of minimal guitar loops, layered oppressively with doomy vocals, all-encompassing percussion, and other oddball instruments. Movements one through nine guide us through uniquely dour worlds, all with the utmost creep factor.

Review: High concept and absolutely beautiful don't always fit together in a sentence. Enter St. Swithin's Day Storm, a record which in one way is to the point, but in almost every other completely wild and unique. Working with weather research scientist Nigel Meredith, the pair recorded the sounds made by a geomagnetic storm in space, on a day in June which, according to folklore, is supposed to decide the rest of summer's weather. Captured via the Halley VI Research Station's low frequency receiver, those moments of cosmic disruption, including chorus emissions, which, when played back, resemble birdsong, along with Meredith's explanations of such phenomena and its effect on Earth, then form the basis for a stargaze-worthy ambient journey that feels out of this world.

Review: "What was amazing about Liska's music was that, unlike most other composers, he didn't attempt to go with the mood of the film and milk the emotions but listened to the rhythm of the movie itself. Especially in an animated film, this helped to greatly enhance the sense of the picture's pace and drama. He was able to discover rhythms in films that even their authors weren't aware of." Jan Svankmajer, whose 90th birthday coincides with the release of this compilation, clearly holds Zdenek Liska in high regard. Respectively, a director and his regular composer-collaborator, the Czech artists worked on ten short films together. The original recordings of music for three of those have survived on tape - Don Juan (Don sajn), Leonardo's Diary (Leonard?v denik) and Jabberwocky (evahlav aneb sati?ky Slam?neho Huberta). Now here they are in all their surreal, folk-ish, playful, comedic and, at times, library-style glory.

Review: Loopsel throws a tapey curveball our way, reissuing the cassette that put their duo project on the map, this time in vinyl / digital format. The wooshing, minimal, and cold mood of this album, hailing from Gothenburg, reflects the moody production approach of the band Monokultur's Elin and Skiftande Enheter, the two artists that make it up. All sounds on this hazy-horizonned hisser formed the soundtrack for The Spiral, a 'multimedia spatial installation' by the artists Last Oblivion. Post-punky tape distortion bury swathes of radio-surfing sample and great planes of synth pad on 'The Spiral', which truly does sound like exactly that.

Review: Call a track 'Rotterdam In De Jaren 90' and you can expect people to have some pretty strong feelings about what it might sound like. Especially given this double-A from Nous Klaer Audio opens on what grows into a tense, electronic, club-ready builder, for a while at least. Cast any thoughts of gabber out the window, though, because if this is the Dutch port city's rave scene on record, it's a post-sweat soaked, blissed out reflection on the wonders of whatever happened the night before. Kems Kriol's mini epic, a 15-minute long tune no less, is a beautiful combination of wistful woodwind and synthesised refrains, presumably found sounds, and strange, abstract noises. 'Tegenlicht', on the other side, shares some of those qualities in the extended intro and outro sections, but also spends some of its 18-minute running time in the basements and warehouses we were originally expecting to find.

Review: Via his Lord of the Isles alias and contributions to Firecracker's Mac-Talla Nan-Creag project, Neil McDonald has proved particularly good at unfurling atmospheric, melodious and immersive electronic music. While much of it has been ambient in nature, there have been fine dancefloor excursions, and on this third solo album, Subtle Thoughts, he showcases the full range of his talents. We get a mix of sparkling, spring-fresh IDM, evocative ambient soundscapes, locked-in ambient techno, his take on bleep-and-breaks ('Open Mode'), widescreen electronic epics ('Subtle Thoughts') and the kind of hard-to-pigeonhole blasts of life-affirming brilliance that mark out the work of only the most talented of producers (see 'Medhi'). Review: Originally conceived as a suite for electronics and ensemble but then abandoned, the latest from Vancouver-based ambient producer Scott Morgan aka Loscil sees him restructure, remix and transform the ashes of it into something newian album that feels like a smouldering landscape, its textures layered with both loss and rebirth. Loscil's Lake Fire is an album born from destruction and reinvention. Thematically, Lake Fire draws inspiration from a road trip into the mountains Morgan took to mark his personal half-century milestone. eventually surrounded by wildfires and thick smoke, and that experience seeps into the album's DNA, shaping its dense, hazy atmospheres. The title itself reflects a haunting ironyiforest fires often take their names from nearby lakes, a stark juxtaposition of destruction and serenity. The album unfolds like a shifting mist. 'Spark' is dynamic and drenched in deep chords that ripple through a cloudy haze. 'Arrhythmia' carries a heavy build, swelling with intensity before receding into silence. These pieces, along with the rest of the album, feel like echoes from another worldidistant yet deeply resonant. Released on Kranky, which has long been a home and supporter of his music, Lake Fire is another great example at Morgan's ability to craft ambient soundscapes that are both vast and intimate. It's a hypnotic listen and an exploration of impermanence and transformation wrapped in a thick sonic fog.

Review: Scott Morgan has made rather a lot of fine music over the years, and little better than his seventh album as Loscil, Coast/range/arc. Here it returns on vinyl after a nine-year absence, complete with a fresh bonus cut recorded in the same period, the Biosphere-esque arctic ambience that is 'Black Tusk (descent)'. Sonically, it fits snugly into the rest of the album, which offers the clearest distillation to date of Morgan's trademark sound. Full of beautiful, icy and slowly unfurling compositions that tend towards the meditative, the set is notable for Morgan's seemingly innate ability to craft immersive soundscapes out of a mixture of hazy drone textures, gaseous electronic chords, soft-touch melodies, atmospheric field recordings and simmering, near cinematic musical movements.

Review: Heavyweight ambient partnerships don't come much bigger than Lawrence English and Loscil, who pool their considerable resources into this majestic album for Kranky. If you're familiar with Loscil's shimmering, sweetly synthetic sound, you'll be very happy with the grandiose blooms of undulating colour bleeding out of 'Cyan', while English's affinity for subtlety comes to the fore on 'Aqua'. The approach for the album was centred around a century-old pipe organ at the Old Museum in Brisbane, but of course there's been a lot of work done on the original sound sources. There's no great tussle between the respective artists - their sound practices merge beautifully, rendering an essential addition to both of their considerable catalogues.

Review: A reissue of an early work by acclaimed avant-gardist and pioneer Alvin Lucier, 'Bird And Person Dyning' is a spoken word and musique concrete pipe dream, spanning the furthest reaches of weirdo acousmatism, phase interference, and the transmission of sound through physical objects. Review: Lundin Oil's latest effort is nothing if not powerful and, at times, intimidating. It's also rooted in an important message. People, by nature, have a habit of deducing things about each other. Or thinking they've deduced, when in reality they've assumed and presumed. Underneath the industrial mechanisms at the centre of these soundscapes, then, there's something vulnerable and human. It's challenging stuff, but also reassuring to be back in this particular experimental fold, with Exploit Divisions the first Lundin Oil album we've had since 2016. While fitting precisely into the back catalogue, you also can't help feel that this is up there with the broadest sonic palette painted by the artist yet. Spanning razor sharp, jagged rhythms and wider, more patient ambient refrains.

Review: You don't need to know that Craobh Haven was made during a one week residency at a tiny cabin in a remote Scottish village of the same name. One play through of the latest stunner to land on the ever-excellent ambient institution SWIMS and it'll feel like you were there in person. A witness to the creation of this strangely natural-feeling, highly technically-crafted, six tracker. Everything about the work by London-based musician and visual artist Loz Keystone and Glaswegian synth explore and jazz trumpeter Christos Stylianides feels in the right place. Its warm and fuzzy but vast and windswept. It's avant garde and abstract, but rounded and complete. It's incredibly inviting and slowly hypnotic. Distant samples of inaudible chatter and looped melodic refrains. Distorted walls of noise masking the patient power of aching brass. You get the point.
