Review: Following the release of his last album of synthesizer-driven imagined sci-fi themes, 2017's "Iteration", Seth Haley AKA Com Truise set about rebuilding his studio, refreshing his palette of sounds and developing a new approach. The result is "Persuasion System", a set of unsurprisingly synthesizer-driven tracks that feels warmer and more human than much of the producer's previous work. Of course, Haley's seemingly inherent melodiousness and obsession with bold aural colours remains at the forefront throughout, meaning that even more bittersweet moments - see "Ultrafiche Of You", "Privilege Escalation" and opaque ambient moments "Gaussian" and "Departure" - will leave listeners feeling suitably warm and fuzzy inside.

Review: Michigan by way of Texas producer Matthew Dear has had an illustrious career, spanning nearly 20 years producing techno and minimal under such alises as Audion and Jabberjaw. But it's under his birth name that he has created his most thoughtful and innovative work that has resulted in several studio albums - this being his sixth. Bunny is said to have been inspired by an objective view of his career thus far, as well as becoming a father, being inspired by his collaborations and just knowing what works musically - coming from experience. Bunny certainly has its moments: from the low slung Bowie-esque pop of "Calling", the smooth neon-lit noir of "Modafinil Blues" or his collaborations with Canadian duo Tegan & Sara - particularly the irresistible lead single "Bad Ones".

Review: It would be fair to say that Drama's debut album is a confident affair, but then they have been quietly developing their sound via self-released singles and EPs since 2016. The Chicago-based duo is now operating on Ghostly International, and "Dance Without Me" feels like a significant release. Musically, it's hugely attractive, delivering a set of songs that effortlessly blur the boundaries between shiny electronic pop, R&B, neo-soul, house, '80s boogie and the hard-to-pigeonhole musical warmth that is most often described as "Balearic". First and foremost it is a pop album, and a grown up one at that. It feels like it has crossover potential, though it's detailed, layered and imaginative enough to excite those who inhabit the musical underground.

Review: Given the saucer-eyed beauty and analogue rich grooves of his 2012 debut album for 100% Silk, Kingdoms, it's perhaps unsurprising that Sam Velenti moved quickly to sign Matt 'Fort Romeau' Green to Ghostly International. A pair of impressive EPs later, Green delivers his second LP. It's another cracker, with breezy, occasionally electrofunk-influenced analogue deep house and leftfield synth-pop grooves being peppered with an enticing range of dreamy chords, curious vocoder vocals and, most notably, deliciously evocative melodies. It makes for hugely enjoyable listening throughout, with highlights including - but not confined to - the new age ambient bliss of "IKB" and humid, chiming "Cloche".

Review: There's little revolutionary about Galcher Lustwerk's third album in as many years, but it could well be his best collection of work to date. Riffing on the deep, off kilter and pleasingly woozy trademark sound he's developed since making his vinyl debut in 2013, "Information" is the kind of set that sounds equally as good at home or on the bus as it does surging from oversized club soundsystems in a converted Brooklyn loft. It's full to bursting with evocative early morning deep house, of course, but it never slips into "overly polite" territory due to the New York producer's love of dusty, crunchy drum machine hits, and bass guitar parts so warm and toasty you could probably use them to toast waffles.

Review: Since Emeralds disbanded earlier in the decade, Steve Hauschildt has impressed with a serious of largely overlooked albums on Kranky that showcased his innate ability to craft distinctly melodic music that sits somewhere between IDM, slowly shifting ambient, droning soundscapes and more ethereal home listening techno. Dissolvi, his first album for Ghostly International, could well be his most accomplished solo work to date. While it explores similar sonic territory to previous full-length releases, the set is bolder, more atmospheric and, at times, intensely beautiful. While undoubtedly fresh, those with long memories will note audible nods to ambient and deep techno greats of the early 1990s, including Jonah Sharp (Spacetime Continuum), Pete Namlook and, most obviously, Boards of Canada. In a word: timeless.

Review: Steve Hauschildt's profile has been on a steady rise since he moved from his long time home of Kranky to Ghostly International. It was a logical move to partner up with the Ann Arbor label as it encouraged the emotional side of his regal ambient pieces to shine through in line with the sensitive tones of other Ghostly alumni (Tycho, Telefon Tel Aviv, Shigeto, for example). On his second album for the label, Hauschildt sounds more moving than ever, his winsome compositions reaching towards bigger spaces especially on rhythmically charged tracks like "Subtractive Skies". This is no drastic departure from his established identity, but rather a considered evolution towards a new space in which his muse can reside.

Review: Ambient enthusiasts have long cherished Keith Kenniff's full-length excursions under the Helios alias, but now his particular brand of quiet contemplation and musical mind massage looks set to reach a wider audience. Ghostly International has snapped up this eighth studio album, a fine set that subtly flips his usual script while retaining Kenniff's trademark languid chords, soft focus production style and yearning, slowly unfurling melodies. He says there's more focus on "texture and harmony" and less adherence to musical rules and song structures. This might be the case, but the results are every bit as alluring, poignant and spiritual as any of his previous albums.

Review: Given that five years has passed since the last HTRK full-length, "Psychic 9-5 Club", it's perhaps not that surprising that the duo's new album, "Venus In Leo" sounds notably different from its predecessors. While the pair's emotionally charged, melancholic approach remains in tact, the dubbed-out downtempo pop that marked out "Psychic 9-5 Club" has been replaced by a drowsier, ethereal sound seemingly inspired by a mixture of the Cocteau Twins, The Durutti Column, Massive Attack's "Mezzanine", David Lynch film soundtracks and sunrise-ready, slow motion dream pop. The results are uniformly inspired, with Jonnine Standish's heart-felt, soft focus vocals sounding particularly emotive and evocative this time round.

Review: Michal Jacaszek's music has always been filmic to varying degrees, but it's only in the last decade that filmmakers have commissioned him to write, record and produce music for their big and small screen projects. His latest album, "Music For Films", riffs on this; while some of it was indeed created with specific cinematic projects in mind, some of it wasn't. Listening through from start to finish, where it comes on like a genuine soundtrack to a melancholic, noir-ish film, it's hard to spot the difference. Combining neo-classical string sounds with field recordings, electro-acoustic textures, ambient style chords and melodies, and nods to music concrete, it's an evocative musical journey that stirs the senses and toys with your emotions. In a word: stunning.

Since then his style has remained true to his gliding, delicate, hypnotic techno roots, with only the most subtle sonic evolutions marking each new record. This one takes in wandering and melancholic numbers like the title track as well as darker trips like "Black Letter". Each and every time, tracks are built on frictionless grooves, with the most deft synths layered up and twinkling keys gently sprinkled up top. What Recondite does, he does very well.

Review: When asked to describe the thinking behind her first album for Ghostly International in one sentence, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith told the label that is was an, "expression of love and appreciation for electricity". There are some deeper and more complex concepts at play, too, but it seems a little unnecessary to list them here; after all, Smith's majestic and mesmerising modular movements can be enjoyed regardless of the admirable inspirations behind them. From start to finish "The Mosaic of Transformation" ripples with ear-catching electronics, unfurling melodic refrains, attractive otherworldly sounds, dreamy layered vocals and emotive, meditative motifs. At times, her synthesizer compositions are almost neo-classical in structure and feel, making the album one of Smith's most widescreen works to date.

Review: Solvent’s fourth artist album, Subject to Shift is an aptly named record, displaying the Toronto based producer’s shift in sound for the project. Known for his hook-laden synth-pop, his latest album, the first in nearly six years, sees the producer moving into a more future acid tinged, angst-riddled place with lots of melancholy and moodiness. Delving deeper and darker than before, Jason Amm, the man behind the alias, deals with much more sombre moods and uses his beloved vocoder less than on his three previous albums. The cute, happy and playful robots made with the pleasant buzz and hums of analogue synthesizers from his last full length, 2004’s Apples & Synthesizers are scarcely present, replaced instead with a mixture of dystopian, acid tinged futurism and bittersweet romantic ache.

Solvent’s bright synth tones are still in effect but tend to operate under new, darker conceits on this record. Tracks like "Formulate" hint at Amm’s previous dancefloor leanings but do so in a much more menacing style with a micro-disco throb and slippery vocoder lead. "Don’t Forget the Phone" wraps an arsenal of dark vocal hooks around a jaunty schaffel beat to convey the paranoia involved within a breakup whilst lead single "Loss For Words" and "Caught A Glimpse" explore Amm’s new world of technology aided melancholy. "Take Me Home" is sinister whilst "Panoramic" finishes the record off in beautiful style. There are still the kind of glistening dancefloor moments of old but unlike his previous releases, Subject to Shift is strewn together by Amm’s heartfelt vocals.

Running with an astute sense and beauty and emotional openness from start to finish, Subject to Shift is arguably Solvent’s finest work to date. It is without question grander and takes the listener to a more rewarding place, but fans of his older material will still be able to appreciate some of its familiarity, whilst also admiring Amm’s artistry growth. Pulled together by live vocals and drenched in its creator’s emotions, Subject to Shift feels, despite being machine-made, wholly human.

Review: "Dreams Are Not Enough" is not only the first Telefon Tel Aviv album for a decade, but also the first since the accidental death of founder member Charles Cooper the same year. It's perhaps understandable, then, that the album is bittersweet and melancholic in tone, with surviving member John Eustis offering up a range of drowsy, dream-like songs and instrumentals - think layered ambient, gentle Balearic synth-pop and tear-jerking late night soundscapes - that seem more laden with feeling than anything he or Cooper released during the band's successful early years. It's a genuinely beautiful, poignant and picturesque set capable of stirring emotions in even the most steely of listeners, and a fitting tribute - if, indeed, it was meant to be - to Telefon Tel Aviv's missing member.

Review: It's been some three years since the release of Dive, the most recent full length from Scott Hansen's decidedly Balearic Tycho project. Here he returns to regular home Ghostly International with Awake, his fourth full-length. It sees him in fine form, delivering a sun-bright set that melds blissful guitars and shoegaze textures with hazy electronics, warm grooves and orange-hued atmospherics. Hansen is a master at creating unashamedly positive, evocative music, and Awake is full of these kind of smile-inducing moments. Aside from being impeccably well made, it is also pleasingly cheery. If you've yet to succumb to his charms, Awake is a great place to start.
