Review: American ambient producer Michael Mantra sadly passed away a few years back, having played a vital role in the development of vibrational and sonic therapy. His theories hugely influenced Echospace duo Stephen Hitchell and Rod Modell, who became close friends with Mantra during the final years of his life. Here they pay tribute to him, creating a piece in three parts inspired by his theories and production methods. It's an all-analogue, drone-influenced soundscape full of dubbed-out textures, meditative white noise and subtle melodic shifts, created in part by using a variety of obscure electronic instruments and experimental production techniques. Sea Shell City is a fitting tribute to Mantra's work, and one of Modell and Hitchell's finest ambient works.

Review: Brooklyn-based Chicagoan Max Ravitz has enjoyed modest success under the Patricia alias, releasing a pair of fine experimental house albums on Opal Tapes. His latest full-length is credited to M Rav, a pseudonym he first used for a particularly dirt-encrusted 'XMAS' 12" on L.I.E.S back in 2014. Common Purpose is mostly a collaborative affair, with the vast majority of the album's 15 tracks recorded alongside friends and guest producers including Cloudface (D. Reynolds), Bookworms (N. Dawson), Huerco S (B. Leeds), Jahiliyya Fields (M. Morandi), his wife Josephine Kingery, Terekke (M. Gardner) and Ngly. It's a typically ghostly, far-out and hazy affair, with Ravitz' experimental house, techno, hip-hop and electro rhythms smothered in freshly baked chords, dubbed-out textures, and the usual L.I.E.S grittiness. It makes for alluring listening, all told, and feels like something you should listen to at 5am, while still feeling the effects of a particularly epic night out.

Review: Back in 2014, the release of Marco Shuttle's typically dark and intoxicating debut album, Visione, was greeted with wholeheartedly positive reviews within the techno community. This belated follow-up is likely to get rave write-ups, too, even if it is a little different to its predecessor. This time round, there are fewer straight-up, pitch-black techno club jams, replaced by creepy, analogue-rich workouts that largely look to vintage IDM and experimental electronica for inspiration. Beginning with the moody ambience of "Adrift", where disconnected cymbals cluster around woozy synthesizer movements, Shuttle variously doffs a cap to Autechre ("Eris"), Artificial Intelligence-era IDM ("Venera 3"), Autechre ("Eris") and the unsettling world of dark electronica ("Olga").

Review: Three years on from his debut album Stone Breaker, Mark E returns with a second long player for Ghostly offshoot Spectral Sound that finds the house producer look to his homeland for inspiration. Product Of Industry takes it's name from Evetts upbringing in the UK industrial heartland of the West Midlands, and how the current global financial situation led to him losing his job, an occurrence which resulted in Mark E the producer "Here I am, a product of industry, both currently and historically" as the producer himself has stated. Musically, the nine tracks offer a considered development from Evetts debut album, and suggest he's eminently comfortable working within the confines of the all analogue hardware used to create Product Of Industry.

Review: For those not schooled in the short-lived but influential sound of New Beat, the name Ro Moran won't mean much. Yet during the late '80s and early '90s, Moran - real name Rembert De Smet - was one of Belgium's most prolific producers, delivering underground New Beat anthems on an almost weekly basis. This career retrospective gathers together the best of his productions, a number of which haven't seen the light of day since 1988. Like much New Beat, Moran's driving, warehouse-friendly productions inventively joined the dots between industrial, EBM and pitched-down acid house, best witnessed in the twisted funk of Kaos 007's "CK On Acid", 2 Body's strobe-friendly "Astoria", and Edwards & Armani's slamming "Acid Drill".

Review: Last year, Jeff Mills provided the soundtrack for a curious Japanese film by Tatsushi Omori called And Then There Was Light. The movie was based on a novel called Hikari, which focuses on a teenager who kills his girlfriend's other lover while mistaking their affair for sexual assault. The dark tone of both novel and film naturally shines through in Mills' refreshingly electronic score, which flits between moments of quietly spacey ambience, creepy intensity, Reichian minimalism (see "Danger From Abroad"), icy soundscapes, industrial strength intensity (the panicked "The Players of Consequence" and "Lost Winners") and, on the "Hikari Mix" of "The Hypnotists", full-throttle Detroit techno with Giallo overtones.

Review: Mirko Vogel is no newcomer to production, having begun his music-making journey way back in the 1990s. Even so, 2015's eponymous, digital-only EP for Room 40 is his sole "official release". This debut album, then, has been a long time coming. Made up of nine lilting ambient soundscapes, LP1 subtly shifts from the beat-less, minimalist techno hypnotism of "Glass" and the crystalline piano motifs of "Cloud Chain", to the restless bleeps of "Night City Landing", via the gently falling strings and chords of "Bow", the pulsing electronics and treated guitars of "Agassiz Rift" and the fluid, FFWD style bliss of "By Sea". In other words, it's an album full of not only subtle variations, but also impressively emotive compositions.
