Review: Since his debut with Schema Records in 2001, Gerardo Frisina has poured his soul into modernising styles such as Latin jazz, funk, and soul. In Sight Vol. 1 now introduces a fresh batch of such cosmo-futuristic moodsetters, continuing a trend that was first set in motion with his debut Moving Ahead (2020). Now the new album, preluded by singles 'Mindoro' and 'Desejar', hears seven tracks, including a cinematic bossa supernova 'O SoNho' as well as an exclusive cut from a rare and revered 10" deep cut from 2009. Frisina's attention to detail ensures the standout vibe of each composition, bringing a one-of-a-kind club-orientation to a rich atmospheric mantle.

Review: Now working under the alias Balaphonic, long serving Manchester artist Danny Ward steers his ear for percussion into something warm, rhythmically rich and hypnotic. He opens with 'Sunflowers in Dub (Deep Summer Mix)', where sitar, harmonica and fluttering keys glide across a humid dubscape, then folds in sun-dappled samba on 'Disorganics (All Strings Mix)', all brushed guitars and delicate groove. 'Six Fingers' leans deeper into Afro-Cuban melancholy, while 'Udders' chops South American drums into psychedelic loops, teasing out low-end heft. A standout collaboration with Ocean Waves Brasil, 'Oxum' blends gentle acid with dreamy textures and Afro-Brazilian swing, before closer 'Bloco Manco' lets off the brakes-delay-lashed, bass-heavy and totally locked-in. It's music built for dancefloors, but with the patience and touch of a drummer who knows when to let things breathe.

Review: What is there left to say about this landmark recording, which captures the heart and soul of pre-revolutionary Cuban music, bringing together veteran musicians whose artistry might have otherwise been lost to time. The result is a stunning blend of son cubano, bolero, danzon and jazz, each track infused with intricate rhythms and heartfelt performances. Flamenco-tinged vocals soar over interwoven instrumentalsieach simple in isolation but collectively forming a rich, textured soundscape. The interplay between piano, guitar and percussion is electrifying, balancing smooth elegance with raw passion. From the hypnotic pulse of 'Chan Chan' to the fiery energy of 'El Cuarto de Tula' and the aching beauty of 'Veinte ANos', the music effortlessly bridges past and present. Moments of exuberance give way to quiet reflection, showcasing the full emotional range of these master musicians. The sharp piano work, the percussive drive and the warmth of the vocal harmonies create an irresistible urge to dance. Even in its most hurried passages, there's an undeniable charmievery note brimming with life. Now presented on a 4xLP gatefold edition, pressed on 180-gram audiophile vinyl and cut at 45 RPM for maximum fidelity, this reissue elevates an already timeless collection. The past lingers in every note, proving that old songs truly do stir old feelings.

Juan Pablo Torres - "Cacao" (Dan Tyler NAD Bulto version) (7:54)
Juan Pablo Torres Y Algo Nuevo - "Pastel En Descarga" (Dan Tyler NAD) (3:39)
Grupo Los Yoyi - "Paco La Calle" (Nick The Record re-edit) (8:11)
Review: Dan Tyler and Nick The Record's third installment in the Mr Bongo Edits series brings a bold twist to Cuban classics with three tracks that are equal parts cosmic and dancefloor-ready. On the A-side, Tyler extends two Juan Pablo Torres tracks from his reissued 1978 'Algo Nuevo' and 1977's 'Super Son.' First, Tyler reimagines 'Cacao,' a standout track from Torres' LP, giving it room to breathe and intensifying the percussive climax with swirling synths and spacey dub effects. It's a track that thrives on a big system, building tension as it goes, and works wonders in the right environmentijust ask anyone who caught it at La Paloma in Barcelona. Next, Tyler dials into 'Pastel En Descarga,' turning the Latin-funk fusion into a punchy, trippy dub with delay and drama, keeping the track's energy while taking it further into spacey, cosmic territory. On the flip, Nick The Record tackles Grupo Los Yoyi's 1977 'Paco La Calle,' taking a 2009 edit and expanding it into a longer, more hypnotic piece. The percussion pushes and pulls as the psychedelic synths swirl, creating a dynamic and ever-building groove. The 2025 version is elevated with new synth lines courtesy of Tyler, deepening the track's psychedelic richness. A cosmic whirlwind of reworks that bridges the gap between '70s Cuban innovation and modern dancefloor sensibilities.

Habana (Musicaanossa 75 remix) (4:05)
Review: Reissued on Japanese talent scourers Musicaanossa Gryps, whose special interest lies in every oddity from obscure breakbeat to hip-hop and jazz, comes the debut, originally self-released album from Cuban cellist, songwriter and vocalist Yaniel Matos. At once arresting and strikingly pure, Matos attends to the ears with a naturalistic plucked cello style and high tenor, proffering an easygoing Afro-latin feel whose tender valence few can claim to know without musical inducements such as this. Backed by a star cast of musicians such as Sidiel Vieria on bass and Cuca Teixeria on drums, Matos reissues a humble throbber of a record here.

Review: The Original Jazz Classics series makes a triumphant return with the reissue of Cal Tjader's influential 1956 album, Latin Kick. Renowned for blending Afro-Cuban rhythms with mainstream jazz elements, this album highlights Tjader's talented abilities on the vibraphone. The ensemble features brilliant performances from Brew Moore on saxophone, Luis Miranda on congas, Bayardo Velarde on timbales, Manuel Duran on piano and Carlos Duran on bass. Though the album title suggests a Latin focus, the tracks venture beyond traditional Latin music, incorporating elements of the emerging exotica genre. Latin Kick offers a global musical journey, including songs about Paris and Vermont. Despite the absence of traditional Latin brass and fervent rhythms, the album captivates with its downtempo ambiance, dreamy landscapes, and smooth tenor sax infusions. Tjader's signature vibraphone often takes a backseat, allowing the ensemble to create a cohesive, melodious, and enchanting atmosphere. The reissue of Latin Kick reaffirms the series' commitment to preserving jazz history, offering a pristine listening experience that celebrates the timeless artistry of Cal Tjader and his exceptional band.

A trained pianist, arranger and conductor, he collaborated with legends like Olga Guillot, Celia Cruz, Josephine Baker and Nat King Cole and a trip to Haiti in the 1940s sparked his interest in African-rooted rhythms, which he then incorporated into his music while performing at Havana's Tropicana cabaret. After surviving a near-fatal bomb explosion during a performance, he left Tropicana to find success on Cuban television before emigrating to Mexico and eventually Sweden. Bebo Valdes Y Su Gran Orquesta is a wonderful window into his colourful rhythms and lively sounds.

Review: Joe Bataan's 1968 sophomore album Riot! is considered a cornerstone of Latin soul and the record that truly cemented his reputation as the genre's king. Backed by the dynamic Latin Swingers band, Bataan masterfully blends Afro-Cuban rhythms, soul and funk with his signature streetwise flair. Tracks like 'It's a Good Feeling' and the title song capture the energy and emotion of late-1960s urban life while reflecting both personal and societal struggles. Originally released in 1973 on Sound Triangle Records, the album blends salsa, funk, soul, calypso and Afro-Cuban rhythms and is a real family affair that features Ray's wife, sons and top musicians like Rickey Washington, who is the father of the revered jazz cat Kamasi Washington. Review: Celia & Johnny, released in 1974 on Fania Records, marked a pivotal moment for both Celia Cruz and salsa music. By this point, Cruz was already a celebrated star in Cuba, but her attempts to break into the U.S. salsa scene had struggled. Enter Johnny Pacheco, co-founder of Fania Records and leader of the Fania All-Stars. A longtime admirer of Celia's powerful contralto voice, Pacheco believed her potential had been stifled by overly complex arrangements. He was confident that pairing her voice with his more streamlined Afro-Caribbean rhythms would catapult her into salsa stardomiand he was right. The album produced two defining hits, 'Toro Mata' and 'Quimbara', both of which immediately resonated with dancers and salsa enthusiasts. The infectious grooves provided by Pacheco's band allowed Celia's voice to shine, and the success of these tracks solidified her status as the Queen of Salsa. Celia & Johnny is now seen as a cornerstone of salsa's golden age. The record's blend of traditional Cuban styles like mambo, guaracha, and guaguanco with the modern salsa sound brought the genre to a wider audience, particularly younger U.S.-born Latinos. Deep cuts like 'Tengo El Idde', 'Lo Tuyo Es Mental', and 'Canto a La Habana' further showcase Cruz's versatility, with moving performances that tap into spiritual, comedic and patriotic themes. Ultimately, Celia & Johnny remains a landmark collaboration that helped define the global appeal of salsa.

Review: The University Of California Santa Cruz Chamber Singers is a group from the 70s headed up by Bob Masters that released two cult albums A Birthday Celebration and Voices. Their lush, lavish, soul-enriching sound is a harmonious balm that here on the newly reissued 'Children Of Bahia' gets paired with some Latin-tinged jazz sounds, shuffling samba rhythms, busy Rhodes keys work and plenty of organic percussive layers thanks to Randy Masters and Solar Plexus. 'Torremolinos (Windmills)' is an equally spiritual sound with more prominent flutes and dancing piano chords all energising every fibre of your being.

Part of Mr Bongo's Cuban Classics series, the record blends Latin rock, funk, soul, disco, and Afro-Cuban rhythms into an eclectic and captivating sound. The funk-heavy opener, 'Muevete Con Las Fuerzas Del Corazon' features an infectious bassline, lively horns and drum breaks, setting the tone for a genre-hopping journey. With standout tracks like the Latin disco-funk 'Casa De Ladrillo' and a cover of Commodores' 'Brick House' this hidden gem, which was produced by Tony TaNo, is a must-have for both fans and collectors.

It finds Powell assembling an 18-piece ensemble to bring the infectious rhythms of mambo to life and mix traditional Latin jazz with influences from electric pioneers like Chick Corea and Weather Report. She's A Rose (instrumental) (3:54)
Lotsapapa (instrumental) (3:39)
Review: F Spot kick off their year with a fresh new release from fresh new funk pushers, Mestizo Beat, emanative of the MagaNa Brothers's hillside studio in Topanga, CA.. Coming at the sound with a distinctive Afro-Cuban bent, this 7" flaunts the natural ends of their particular sound: 'She's A Rose' packs a beautiful brass section and charms the listener with it's extended pre-chorus section. 'Lotsapoppa', meanwhile, minimizes the sound with a simple kick, bass, and djembe groove to start with, before launching into a dynamic Afro-disco infection, the collaborative patients zero, one and two being Steve Haney of Jungle Fire on drums, Jason Cressey of the True Loves on trombone, and Jesse Audelo on arrangement.

Review: For the second instalment in their Cuban Classics series, Mr Bongo present this sought-after slice of sublime Afro-Cuban jazz from 1976. It comes courtesy of one of Cuba's most influential acts, Grupo Irakere. Founded in 1973 by Chucho Valdes (son of the Cuban pianist and bandleader Bebo Valdes) the group was home to many of Cuba's finest musicians over the years. With an electrifying style and sound, they mixed traditional Cuban music with jazz, funk, and rock. This self-titled album includes the much-loved, dancefloor heavy-hitter 'Chequere-Son', a Latin-jazz funk masterpiece with Cubanized bebop-flavoured horn lines, lush keys, and 70s hip swagger. Though 'Chequere-Son' is the keystone of the record, the album is laced with brilliance at every turn, from the Carlos Santana-esque channelling 'Iya' with its percussive Latin power, to the sultry, slick and passionate '38 1/2'.

Review: El Tic Tac by the Cuarteto Yemaya quartet is a cult, expensive and hard to find treasure form Latin America. It was the band's second album back in 1971 and offers up a great set of Peruvian tunes with a Cuban flavour and irresistibly sunny feels. Pancho Acosta's electric guitar denies much of the record and is backed up with conga and timbales. This is the first time it has ever been reissued and has been remastered from the original tapes for the occasion. Do not sleep on this classic.

Review: The indestructible Ray Barretto demonstrated superb skills on this record back in 1973. His band were at the forefront of the new Afro-Cuban musical movement that was emerging and became known as salsa. His composer skills were well known after he wrote 'Cocinando' and his band were also much loved in the live area though Johnny Rodriguez on bongo and cencerro, bassist Dave Perez, pianist Louis Cruz, along with trumpeter Rene Lopez and vocalist Adalberto Santiago all left him soon after. HIs Indestructible album is his most remarkable, with a constant sense of flow to the rhythms from front to back.

Review: Los Caneyes was the first ever solo project from Cuban funk master Juan Pablo Torres and now Future Rootz - in collaboration with Canal Sounds and EGREM - is serving up a first-ever vinyl release of his early singles 'No Estabas No estabas Tu' and 'Oye Ven Y Baila Mi Son' on 7". These two superbly funky Afro-Cuban tracks were recorded in 1973 by this influential musical innovator. The first is a flame-hot and percussion-laden groove that is loose-limbed and sure to get those bones shaking and the second is similar - pure Latin heat for the floor.

Review: This second instalment of Jazz Room's Pure Latin re-releases comes in the form of Orquesta Mayombe's masterpiece, Con Ritmo Del Tambo. First emerging in 1980 and now considered to be a classic example of Nu Yorican El Barrio sound, this is an essential record for fans of Tata Vasquez. Featuring Afro-Cubano jazz heavyweights including Chocolate Armenteros, Jose Mangual, Mauricio Smith, and Orestes Vilato, as well as an astounding seven-person percussion section, it's safe to say this release packs a punch. Travelling through ten dazzling, floor-filling cuts of Afro-Cuban via New York Jazz age tracks, this is a must-have for fans of Latin jazz.

First released in 1969 alongside the nighttime swayer 'In The Midnight Hour' , the single hears a funking reissue here that once more shines a blinding light on Santamaria's deft ability to blend originally American compositions with Latin rhythms and soul-jazz structures.

Review: Coming just after this seminal recording celebrated its 50th anniversary, Craft Recordings presents a carefully handled reissue of Tito Puente's Para Los Rumberos. Puente remains one of the all time greats of Afro-Cuban percussion, and he recorded this definitive set in New York in 1972, whipping through mambo, guaracha and cha-cha-cha with his trademark explosive drumming front and centre and backed up by some sharp-shooting players. Cut all-analogue from the original tapes and pressed in audiophile quality, this is a much-deserved revisit to one of the most iconic recordings in Puente's accomplished career.

Review: Mr Bongo continue to churn out top-quality re-edits and here they enlist Danny Krivit aka. Mr. K, the New York producer who has longstandingly helped prop up the dance scene there since the early 1960s. Krivit is responsible for perhaps some of the earliest and most significant disco and funk edits on Earth, so we're more than happy to hear these new ones out, in which he lends his ear to two mambi from Latin extraordinaires Sabu Martinez and Nico Gomez. Percussive clanks and boxy slaps abound on this audiophiles' charm.

Review: Madrid via Cuba musical gang El Combo Batanga have finally dropped this new double-sider 7". It was teased by the early reals sou the a-side which brings plenty of dance floor filing heat with 'El Que La Rompe La Paga'. It's packed with samba shuffle, expressive horn work and results, and relentless keys work designed to get the ass moving. On the flip is 'Toca La Campana' which is a little less dense but not less rhythmic in the way it sways to and fro with fiery Spanish vocals and funk riffs.

Colon is one of the all-time greats of salsa, and his recordings alongside Hector Lavoe are some of the truly defining works of the genre. El Juicio was the third album from the pair to go gold after 1970's Cosa Nuestra and 1971's La Gran Fuga so you know they were on a roll. This 50th anniversary edition is the perfect opportunity to catch up on an essential document of salsa, for those new to the genre and lifelong fans alike.

Now the venerated digger and collector opens up his archives once more for another deep dive, this time under the heading of 'Shipwrecked On A Tropical Island.' As such these are Afro-tinged jazz sounds with shimmering steel drums and gently breaking waves. There are Afro-Cuban spinners like Phyllis Branch's 'Babalu' and samba shufflers full of soul. An epic and escapist collection that takes you to another world.

This new collection of such tunes is another testament to that with a heavily international and world bent. Oodles of Latin, hip hop and Afro vibes pervade the tunes by Guts aka Fabrice Franck Henri alongside a whole host of collaborators. He's a super prolific talent who has put out some ten albums in just over a decade and Estrellas is one of his best. It comes on six sides of delicious wax and takes you on a trip to sunny climates from Cuba to Brazil.
