Review: Mysticisms delves into the spiritual realm with the archival recordings of London based Japanese duo, Afrobuddha to present their highly sought music to date, in Obame and Zone, on one EP.
With copies of their debut releases now selling for dizzying prices, a chance to work with label friend Kay Suzuki attained. With his respected Time Capsule label releasing a stream of amazing world music inspired reissues, his project with Koichi Sakai is revisited and reborn.
Released as a celebration of the spiritual affinity felt with the African and Afro-Caribbean music community, enter 'Obame'; a collaboration with the Kakatsitsi Drummers - pioneering percussionists of the Ga tribe of Southern Ghana. Combining traditional drumming with flutes, xylophone and folkloric chants, Suzuki and Sakai's art and philosophy of rhythm via house, disco, afrobeat and reggae, underpins this offering to stunning effect.
'Zone' follows. A spiritual essence of London's vibrant multi-cultural society, the track fuses intoxicating raw percussion. Featuring Ghanaian master drummer Afla Sackey's thundering congas and djembe on a 3/4 signature of polyrhythm beats, repetitive chants and deep analogue synths, this is a stripped backed journey into drum dub of space-bending delays and reverb effects.

Review: Operation Disco is a forthcoming album from Dr Packer and this four-track sampler shows up the sort of 80s boogie disco delights we can all look forward to. The artist is in a fine run of form right now and that continues through the slow slung bass and dazzling chords of his remix of soul-drenched opener Colors - 'Am I Gonna Be The One.' His take on The Sunburst Band & Leroy Burgess is more soulful and musical with a loose rhythm section getting you in the groove. The flip side features some blistering house music on 'Love Fantasy' and acrobatic vocals on chunky funker 'Runnin' by Mistura.

Review: Sushitech continue to celebrate the depth and breadth of their catalogue with another 15th anniversary reissue in the form of this surefooted two-tracker from Delano Smith and Norm Talley. This is the sweet spot where Detroit house and Detroit techno intertwine, leading in with the dreamy haze and steady trucking groove of 'Constellation'. 'Detroit 2-Step' has a spicier demeanour which artfully merges sultry sax with an ear-snagging riff which sounds organic and metallic all at once. Again, the groove is locked down and impossible to shake off course, making this heady club tackle for those who want to season their set with some of the finest rollers in the game.

Review: Backatcha Records dig into the vaults of New Jersey producer Randy Irwin for Toast's 1983 disco masterpiece 'It's Just An Illusion.' Toast was a band of Baltimore singer-songwriters and well-known New York session players and this was the only release on Irwin's Charm City imprint. But it is a belter. A slow motion tune with the sort of deep cut drums that sink you in for the ride, with lush flutes, sensuous falsetto vocal delivery and funky little guitar riffs. Flip it over for the instrumental version which allows the drum work to really shine.

Review: When it comes to tasteful mash-ups and club-ready re-edits, DJ Soopasoul's Soopastole Edits series is always a reliable source of fresh dancefloor heat. He's in predictably fine form on this latest volume - the 26th in total, fact fans - which sees him re-animate an already killer Fatman Scoop cut. On the A-side, he places energy-raising snippets of the Harlem-raised, gravel-voiced rapper's 'Put Your Hands Up' atop a funky backing track crafted from loops lifted from a classic disco-funk workout. That fresh, sample-heavy instrumental re-edit can be heard in full on the flip, offering is a chance to wallow in the killer groove and tight, clipped guitar licks.

Review: We're all about new artists coming through on their own imprints, so Ludwig A.F. Rohrscheid's debut, the glorious Velocity, is very much welcome on our charts. The title tune itself is a brilliant bric-a-brac blend of broken d&b in the same tone as PLO man, and of LTJ Bukem before him, which makes for a fine addition to any dance set; "Xenon" closes the A-side with a bouncy, full-bodied house bass driven and charged by a rusty analogue beat with a sublime swing. "Helium" is more of a hands-down dancefloor attacker, looping constantly to the sounds of a distant flute, and "Exoplanet" plays with a similar swarm of sounds, twisting and lopping them endlessly amid a void of beats. Nice touch.

Review: The ever on point Japanese label At Home Sound is back with another blistering brace of brilliant edits. DJ Kawasaki steps out first with a special 45 edit version of a Soul Boogie mix by the late great Phil Asher, who himself was reworking the Root Soul original 'Spirit of Love.' It's the sort of lush and feel good disco tune that comes laden with a ton of great synths and guitar riffs as well as the all important vocal. The ever green Ryuhei The Man then turns in a bossa tinged, Latin flecked edit of a Mano Ariba mix of the same tune that is packed with sunshine.

Review: The Eastenderz label continues to kill it and define its own micro-scene with each and every release. Fabe is very much part of this little pocket where tech house, minimal and electronic funk all coalesce into club-ready pumpers with plenty of personalities. 'Tape Type' bobbles along with nice off kilter hits and a rasping bass. 'Superbold' heads to the cosmos with its smeared pads and expansive feel and 'Playing Trigs' then dials it back to silky deep house sounds with lush neon pads. Closer 'Pivo's View' is another airy cut with well-deployed vocal stabs and a general sense of carefree cool that it's hard not to love.

Review: The West Loop Chicago crew are back at it again with more of that sultry finery, neatly packed onto a Vong45 7" and with their eyes set squarely on the lounge. The main version of 'Daylight' is a blissful treat, all languid Rhodes and low slung funk which doffs its cap to Roy Ayers on its mystical voyage to the outer reaches. On the flip, we get treated to an 88 BPM mono version of the track if you need even more of that vintage flavour, coming on like a deep cover 70s cut with a sound that pours out of the speakers like melted butter. The weather might be rubbish but Matasuna Records has got some red hot Latin fire to keep you warm. Venezuelan musician, arranger and conductor Porfi Jimenez is the man behind the Phirpo y sus Caribes band and two tunes from their only album get served up here. It came originally in 1972 and is a sought after grail record, with full permission for the late-musician's family given for this reissue. 'Comencemos (Let's Start)' comes on strong with big horns and hard stabs over a bustling rhythm that is all steamy and sweat inducing. 'Mi Moooto' goes a little deeper but still has a sensuous sax sound and plenty of South American heat.

Review: Guy J has been a real mainstay of the progressive scene for many years. Now that this sort of richly melodic, slow burning style is back en vogue it is his time to really shine. Lost & Found tap him up for this new three tracker, which opens with the shuffling depths and subtle pads of 'Small Alarms.' 'Modulator' ups the ante with a more twisted, peak time sound with sonic references to video game soundtracks of the early 90s. 'The Fall' is the deepest, widest, slowest tune of the lot and that means when the heavenly melodies do come they really make a mark.

  1. Mahlalela (Lazy Bones) (edit By Mr K) (5:15)
  2. Barrio Nuevo (edit By Mr K) (4:52)
Review: Mr. K is back with a killer double-sider of African funk and Latin disco.

Letta Mbulu was one of many South African artists to flee the country as Apartheid choked the nation, arriving in New York in 1965 and reconnecting there with fellow countryman Hugh Masekela. Masekela had already developed a relationship with producer Stewart Levine, and when the two formed their own label, Chisa, they quickly signed Mbulu. By 1970, Mbulu, Masekela, and Mbulu's husband Caiphus Semenya, a saxophonist in Hugh Masekela's Union of South Africa group, had all relocated to California. There they formed lasting relationships with members of the Crusaders, who had just dropped the "Jazz" from their name and begun releasing a cool hybrid of funk, soul and worldly jazz. When it was time for Letta to record her first album for Chisa, the Crusaders backed her in the studio with powerful horn arrangements by Masekela. "Mahlalela (Lazy Bones)" was written by Semenya and was released as a single, immediately finding a fan in the young Danny Krivit back in NYC, who included it in his very first DJ sets. "A truly stand-out funky African track," Danny describes it, pointing to the distinctive vocals and instantly immersive atmosphere that envelopes listeners from the first notes. As sought after as the original is, this superior remastered mix used for Danny's edit on this release has never appeared in the 7-inch format. With a wide stereo field and a crisp, powerful punch to the horns and drums, this release takes this already iconic cut to a new level.

Bandleader, vibraphonist and timbales player Louie Ramirez explicitly attempted to cross over in 1976 with his Different Shade of Black LP, covering big disco sensations "Do It Anyway You Wanna" and "Bad Luck." But the connoisseur's deep cut on the album was always "Barrio Nuevo," which took the creative approach of alternating smooth hustle sections with intense jazzy Latin jam breaks laced with timbales and electric piano and sounding almost like an East Coast version of Santana. The contrasts provided a cool listening experience, but tended to break the mood on the dancefloor. On this edit, DK leans hard into the Latin side of the tune and builds the dance floor energy with a rearrangement that is guaranteed to work up a sweat.

Loud and cut for the dancefloor on a small-hole 7-inch, it's another Mr. K sure shot!

Review: Tropical Disco Records rolls out more of their sun kissed goodness on an impressive 21st volume of their self-titled series. As always there is a devious selection of disco dons taking charge of the course cuts, with Dominic Balchin getting the party started with big trumpet stabs and soul train grooves. Da Lukas slows things down and goes for a more deep, swinging cut with his 'Get Disco Vibes' and then scene veteran Moodena's 'Who Got The Keys?' gets more jazzy, with some fantastic keys and funky bass. Toby O'Connor closes out with a steamy and romantic slow jam, and in doing so rounds out an EP packed with the sort of positive vibes we all need right now.

Review: Given the recent rise in interest in early-to-mid 1990s ambient techno, IDM and melodic electronica, it was probably only a matter of time before Paul Smith dipped into the archives of his Likemind label and offered up a new collection of period works from Nurmad Jusat under the Nuron and Fugue aliases. The eight tracks scattered across this essential double-pack originally appeared on two separate EPs in 1993 and '94 respectively. The standard is exceptionally high throughout, with Jusat casually joining the dots between deep space electro, B12/Black Dog style IDM and bubbly, acid-flecked ambient techno. We expect this to (righty) sell quickly, so don't hang around if you want to snag a copy.

The Main Room Mix has real crossover potential - it is as likely to unite a large, sun-kissed festival crowd as it is a group of shoppers in a high street fashion store. The pianos, vocals and drums are all super smooth and seductive. The jazz mix then layers in some nice big trumpet leads and noodling basslines that would make Love Vega proud. Summer is here, and with house like this playing, it never sounded better.

And that music is stylistically a balance of old and new, as this first EP from the new Expansion signings shows. It has slick modern production but a classic soul vibe over lush jazz drumming, with plenty of glowing and golden synths. The vocal work is buttery smooth and spreading positive messages of love. Review: West London's post-punk scene is showcased with an EP built on the raw energy of like-minded collective spirits of the time by the short-lived Hamburger All-Stars.

Primarily revolving around the ideas of Justin Adams, a recent arrival in London with his band, The Syndromes, they soon found themselves recording at Street Level Studios - a basement squat in then run-down Little Venice. With producers Kif-Kif Le Batteur (Here And Now / Planet Gong) and Grant "Showbiz" Cunliffe (Blue Midnight / The Fall), their open-minded techniques allowed Adams to develop his increasing interest in the "studio as instrument" principles he loved from the likes of Brian Eno and Lee Perry.

Not a band as such, but friends and musicians from other bands all contributing including The Impossible Dreamers, Alternative TV, Gong and more, this "All-Stars" collective would later go on to be part of, form or affiliated in The Invaders Of The Heart, The Pretenders, Moodswings and Mutoid Waste.

Appearing on just 2 releases, the now rare split 7" and LP for the aptly named 100 Things To Do / Fuck Off Records, the songs initial vocals soon shift into funk and dub improvisations. One Million Hamburgers, Swinging London Pt 2 and Studded Leather Jacket almost fall away into atmospherics, with guitar, bass, percussion and horns augmented by Dr Rhythm machine, shortwave radio and heavy doses of Space Echo that capture the period's rawness and naivety to perfection.

Review: Mukatsuku goes all balearic with this limited hand-numbered 180 gram 12 inch with a collaboration with Leng.First up is the sultry, melodic & life affirming jazzy keys glory which is ''Susta'' taken from the 10 Years compilation from 2020 now given a whole side of vinyl for itself. On the flipside Payfone is in fine form on "Last Night in Sant Celoni" is where Phil Passera offers up a warm and humid chunk of soft-touch dancefloor bliss underpinned by a combination of vintage analogue drum machine, 1980s style slap bass, rich electric piano motifs, and casually brilliant jazz guitar flourishes provided by regular Payfone guitarist Royce Wood Junior. First time this instrumental version has been available on wax.

Review: Lewis Taylor self-released self-titled 1996 album is often spoken of as his masterpiece. It remains a modern classic more than a quarter of a century later as it stylishly and effortlessly mixes up neo-soul, pop and laid back funk. Original copies are incredibly hard to find let alone affordable so this is another timely reissue form Be With. The music has shades of every from Price to Gaye to Hendrix. It can be intimate and vulnerable as well as bold and empowering and is always hugely sensitively charged at all times. Highlights include the likes of the swinging, sombre funk of 'Whoever' and bittersweet feels of 'Betterlove.'

Review: The Description Is Not The Described is a much anticipated debut solo release from the hotly tipped Nathaniel Cross. Rolling Stone Magazine once dubbed him The Quincy Jones Of Catford for his mad and diverse skills, and the arranger and trombone player has walls backed up that talk with action. He has recorded and performed with pop giants like Stormy, Emile Sande, Kano and Solange and worked on both Moses Body albums. on his own EP, he masterly draws on the rich heritage of black music from gospel to soul to hip hop and dancehall, but arranges them all in slick jazz styles.

Review: Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45 series is never more relevant than in the warmer summer months. The latest transmission from the South American country's golden period is again well mastered and cut nice and loud so that the super addictive vocal o the a-side really lodges deep in your brain. It also has a nice boogie bassline and plenty of funk in the drums. Flip it over for a more driving and hard hitting bit of samba rock with MPB grooves and a call and response male/female vocal that says over the high speed grooves.

Review: Originally composed around 1994-1999, James Bernard's Unreleased Works have lie dormant bar a select group of friends who were lucky enough to experience the release through an extremely limited CDr. Over 25 years later, James and A Strangely Isolated Place have repackaged this deeply personal collection of acid-infused ambient-breaks into two LPs and one extended digital album: Volume 1 (Acid Dreams) and Volume 2 (Elemental Dreams). Arriving at a time when James was primarily producing Trance and Acid under his Influx or Cybertrax aliases on Rising High Records, these compositions came to life when James felt most vulnerable and his style most malleable. The music was never intended to be heard by the outside world and was a remedy for his own private centering - a personal journal through tough times. Encouraged by close friends to rip copies to CDr after a few tracks were posted online, the album has since been long-sought-after and confined to the Discogs want lists. Originally spanning 3 CDs and themed in styles ranging from 'Beatless', to 'Beats' and finally 'Beats and Modular', it was a descriptive yet humble description for the tantalizing journey that lies within.

At the time Floorplan was still in its infancy with just a handful of releases on Drama in the '90s, the seminal 'Paradise' album had yet to be conceived and Robert's daughter Lyric Hood hadn't joined the party.

Review: Dam Swindle - the Dutch duo formerly known as Detroit Swindle - turn their hand to remixing some old disco gold here. First up is the iconic 'Everyman' by Double Exposure. They do a subtle job, touching up the bass with a contemporary edge and leaving the vocal to do much of the work. A fine move. The flip side is an edit with more of an eye on a full and sweaty dance floor. Kongas's 'Kongas Fun' is all mad synth solos and tribal drumming with a sense fo 60s funk squealing up ahead.

Review: Floating Points reissued this album on his Melodies International imprint is of Open Soul, the 1976 debut album from Chicagoan soul/jazz-funk fusionists six member outfit Tomorrow's People led by four Burton Brothers. The album is notoriously hard to find, with original copies occasionally changing hands online for eye-watering sums of money. It's a terrific album, as is this welcome reissue on the Japanese label P Vine with obi strip. Spanning a wide range of soul and jazz-funk styles - from the rubbery, sax-laden disco-funk bump of "Let's Get Down With The Beat" and doo-wop influenced "Hurry Up Tomorrow", via the blistering "Hurt Perversion" - it's an inspired collection that stands up to repeat listens. Epic flipside cut "Open Soul" - a 20-mimute trip into space-soul territory - is especially good.

The double a-side has never been re-issued since the first time it came out in 1976 and comes here with B-side bomb 'Bubble and Squeak,' a real rare groove classic with fluid bass playing and rolling rhythms that are softened with tender chord work and airy flute. A-side 'Sally' is a brilliantly intriguing track that leads you to a place of mystery on meandering bass, wandering keys and 60s horns. Both of these are lush.
