E2-E4
Review: 53 Year Old Manuel Göttsching can easily be called a living Legend. In 1981 he recorded "E2 - E4" completely solo in his West Berlin Studio, live, in "one go" and without any later editing, over-dubs or such. Inspired by American minimal music artists like Steve Reich, Phillip Glass and Terry Riley. A piece of Music was created that would years after influence and change the whole electronic music scene.

Review: 'Various Films' brings together the three, previously separated EP releases. The titles proves the impression to be true that the music by Matrix has the characteristics of movie scores. Going through the tracks one will realize the rather monotone pulsating groove dominates, but the continuously changes in the colours of the sound revealing the strength of the project.

Review: 'Ploy' is the imitating release by Basic Channel even before they had found their name under which they would create a complete outstanding release sequence. The vibe here is very infected by the early 90s Detroit techno movement. The B-side features an extended playing atmospheric remix by Detroit's major force Underground Resistance (2005 re-mastered re-issue!).

You'll be surprised and pleased to hear, furthermore, that there are some choice cuts from these notable luminaries on board starting off in style with Erast (aka Nikakoi) and the best track on offer "Q4" a gargantuan two-step deployment of cut-up voice edits and rudebwoy basslines that work a treat for all those of you who like to destroy the dancefloor in the most unpredictable, spectacular way. Killer. Phoenecia's "Community Coolge" utilises the same dirty aquatic beat structures we know and love & a dense fog of twisted 4/4 percussive loops forever shifting into darker, twisted terrain. Luke Vibert's "Mechanical Man" is another surefire winner, a storming breaks fiasco with killer bass stabs, vocodered tweaks and a nice line in hardcore tweaks making for one of his best tracks in some time.

The Climax (Basic Reshape mix)
Review: Basic Reshape features Basic Channel's very free takes of two of Carl Craig's projects that were originally released separately from each other on his own Planet E label. The Basic Reshape of "The Climax" (which itself was originally released in 1991 on Retroactive) first appeared on the 2001 reissue of this milestone in Carl's work, is one of the most hypnotic and driving club tracks that Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald have produced in their post Basic Channel period. "Remake" Basic Reshape from 1994 relates to "Remake Uno/Duo", Carl's sample-based re-interpretation of Manuel Göttschings epochal E2-E4. Basic Channel take a radical, abstract, sample-free approach with a breathtaking slow motion groove under a multilayered sound sphere. This track also appeared on the Basic Channel CD.

Review: Baja California's Fernando Corona is in a league all his own. The cinematic soundscapes he creates as Murcof (Leaf Records) are as profound as any by Gershwin or Dvorak. Terrestre, which translates to Terrestrial, is a more percussion & rhythm-oriented project, still with Fernando's trademark moodscapes in each composition. This time, however, you get skillfully crafted, highly infectious, deep grooves too; making Terrestre's album a most essential electronic music record. Terrestre incorporates Nortec and dub elements to create the closest thing we've ever heard to an accurate sound-picture of modern Tijuana. It is the sound of the frontier, dark, scary, humorous, groovy and addictive. Trivia #1: The cover image of Fernando Corona in a cowboy hat is a tribute to Malverde, Patron Saint of Drug Lords, a once real but now mythical border region fantasma who does his penitence by creating miracles. Trivia #2: If you give customs officers suspicious vibes when crossing into the US, "Secondary Inspection" is where you must go for an intimate meeting. Tip!!!

Review: With a distinctive wonky hookline and fat dubby bassline, 'Unde' by Italy's Duoteque rolls along lazily as the third track of the sampler. Differing from a lot of their earlier productions, this EP shows how versatile this outfit can be as this track really shows off their summer feel. Second on the second sampler is another new hot producer from South America, Seph. Highlighted here is the track 'Bats' which as its title suggests has haunting melodies and atmospherics over a crisp energetic groove. A cheeky closing track to the EP that can be played at any time of the night depending on yours and the dancefloors mood!!! Attic (Leftroom's alter ego of Chris and Antony of Glimpse recordings) are up first with their track 'Keep in Touch'. Chris and Antony's work has been finding favour with DJs across the globe most notably Magda and Troy Pierce, and this track is sure to do the same. With its warped vocal samples and eerie atmospherics, this jerkily arranged track, shows off their quality production ability. Finishing off part 2 of the package is rising-producer Barem and '6am'. Barem has been building quite a reputation with releases on labels such as Minus and Found Sound and this track is true to form. Punchy snares and kicks all the way over a throbbing minimal groove, with simple yet effect drops and structure, achieve full dancefloor effect. Label support from Luciano, Craig Richards, Magda, Troy Pierce, Kiki, Matthew Dear, Lee Burridge, Ralph Lawson, Paul Woolford.

Review: "The Return Of Caro" is an entirely listenable album which provides a bounty of dancefloor-friendly tracks. Caro swims between intersecting genres from Detroit-influenced house to jacking techno, with the signature style that led de:bug, German bible of all things electronic, to call him "Surely one of the most self-willed house producers." The tracks "Can't Tell Why" and "My Little Pony" are the one-two punch of this album - each has a memorable vocal and raw, movement-friendly beats that harken back to the glory days of Trax and Dance Mania. These jackers propose an alternate universe where "It's A Cold World" and Jamie principle's "Baby Wants To Ride" stormed the pop charts. "Can't Tell Why" is the sincere, emotional number, telling a brief story about love and loss to which we can all relate surely. "My Little Pony" is a tasty, guilty pleasure: unforgettable dry dancefloor humour. "Ah, Ah, Ah" and "Heavy Wheel" offer widescreen, cinematic house appeal. "Ah, Ah, Ah" is a perfect opener for the album, full of optimistic sci-fi sounds, good for a sunny day. "Heavy Wheel" is a melancholy, jazzy, slow builder. Woven between these house and techno tracks are some less genre-bound numbers. "Sea Of Hands" is a glitched-out love song with intricate Latin beats and an oceanic guitar melody. "We Can Build It" is melancholy techno of ambitious scope which folds in heartfelt references to influences from Drexciya to the Black Dog. "Ovnito" is a rare recording from 1962 of Perez Prado's orchestra jamming with a small guest who came one day from another world, bearing arp synthesizers and some delicious ham-and-cheese sandwiches. Finally, "My Little Castle" finishes up the album with hypnotic, acidic and thoroughly modern techno. Sweeping and sultry, the minimal foundation supports an atonal song from some mysterious cabaret. The acid is kept at a slow simmer as hypnotic melodies weave inside - a track with plenty of room for the head and feet to wander, a fitting end for an album of huge scope.

Review: Here you have the long-awaited debut album from Fenin, the man who symbiotically fuses techno and dub for Shitkatapult! Lars Fenin has been active as a musician since end of the 1980s. In 1995 he founded his own reggae band in Berlin called Tribal Notes, which managed to have plenty of shows. He quickly became familiarized with the growth in electronic music from Berlin's expanding club and music scene, starting his own productions in 97. His first 12" titled 'Herr Pitzelberger' appeared in 2000 on Shitkatapult. "Grounded" now marks the coming of his debut album on Shitkatapult. Fenin really lets techno, dub, and reggae collide. His musical roots and passions appear more lucid than ever before. His productions have little to do with what is generally understood to be dub-techno or techno dub. It's not about minimal techno tracks overloaded with effects, but more like old school and grounded productions that emerge from studio handywork, like classic overdub techniques created live on a mixing board. The term dub thus derives from a much earlier engagement and understanding of reggae. The musical spectrum is set pretty wide. This is then the strength of the album. It's not another dub techno album in the least bit. It is a debut album where techno, dub, and reggae are brought closer together successfully. It's much more a technoid album for the dub and reggae freaks than a dubby album for techno freaks - even when everybody that has already seen him live knows damn well that his techno-heavy tracks get every club pumping! Tip!

From Detroit playboys Lee Curtiss and Seth Troxler to Wolf + Lamb godfather Gadi Mizrahi and the hugely underrated Bodycode, they've all dropped bombs on Spectral Sound. Proper after-party music.
