Notes: A-149-3 is the third module of the A-149-x range. In this group, this module present several functions of Don Buchla's "Source of Uncertainty 265/266" (SOU) modules that cannot be realized with existing A-100 modules. Some functions of Buchla's 265 and 266 SOU can be realized with existing A-100 modules.
Module A-149-3 is based on the homonymous "Fluctuating Random Voltages" by Buchla. Compared to the historic original, a lot of functions have been added. For example the user has access to virtually all internal signals (e.g. Noisy Triangle or S&H) and there are a lot of adjustable parameters which were fixed in the original.
For example, the frequency and noisiness of the internal triangle oscillator, the correlation of the S&H and manual or automatic frequency control of the S&H clock oscillator. The fixed internal connections of the original are wired to sockets in the A-149-3 and can be used also individually as the connections of the original are realized as normalled sockets. That way e.g. the S&H or slew unit can be used independent from the other units.
The functions in detail:
As in the original a digital noise signal is filtered in three different ways. The three "noise flavours" are available at three sockets and can be used for all kind of noise applications:
+3db (+3dB per octave, a bright noise, also called blue noise)
-3dB (-3dB per octave, a dark noise, also called red or brown noise, Allan Strange calls it "reciprocal white noise")
Flat (flat spectrum, also called pink noise)
In the original the -3dB output is used add some noise to an internal triangle oscillator with fixed frequency (~ 100 Hz) and fixed "noisiness". The result is called "noisy triangle". In the A-149-3 the frequency of the triangle oscillator and the level of the noisiness can be adjusted. The frequency is adusted by means of the Frq. control and the Range switch (~ 110Hz ... 5 seconds period in position high). In addition one can select between the -3dB and Flat output as noisiness source by means of an internal jumper. When Noisiness control is fully CCW one obtains a clean undisturbed triangle signal. With Noisiness control fully CW the result is a triangle signal with a lot of noise or randomness. The noisy triangle signal is available at the socket "N Tri" and is displayed with a dual colour LED.
The "N Tri" signal is normalled to the signal input of the subsequent Sample&Hold unit (S&H). The clock signal for the S&H is generated by an internal rectangle oscillator. This signal is normalled to the S&H clock socket and is displayed by an LED. One can select between manual and automatic control of the clock period by means of a toggle switch. In position "man." the period is controlled manually by the "Period" control. With control "Period" fully CCW one obtains the shortest period or highest frequency. Turning the control up increases the period or lowers the frequency. In position "auto" of the switch the period is controlled by the slew unit.
In this position a vactrol is used to define the frequency of the S&H clock. This vactrol is controlled in the same way as the vactrols of the slew unit, i.e. the period of the S&H clock changes simultaneously with the slew time. In the historic original only the auto mode was available. There was no manual control available.
The S&H has another special feature: the Correllation control. It's a feedback function where shares of the S&H output are fed back to the S&H signal input and mixed with the actual S&H input signal. The result is slurring the signal like a sub-audio lowpass filter, kind of a "digital slew function" because the gradation of the signal persists.
The S&H output is availabe at the corresponding socket and is displayed with a dual colour LED.
The S&H output is normalled to the signal input of the subsequent Slew Limiter unit (SL). The core of the slew limiter are two vactrols (vactrol = combination of a light emitting diode/LED and a light dependent resistor/LDR built into lightproof case). The brightness of the vactrol LEDs can be controlled manually (control "Man." of the slew unit) and by an external control voltage (socket "SL CV" with associated attenuator "CV" of the slew unit). The brightness of the vactrol LEDs is displayed at the top of the front planel. As already mentioned a third vactrol can be used to control the frequency of the S&H clock oscillator simultaneously to the slew limiter. The SL output is availabe at the corresponding socket and is displayed with a dual colour LED.
Due to the access facilities to many of the internal signals and connections it's possible to use the sub-units also for other applications. E.g. the noisy triangle signal, the S&H unit (incl. correlation) or the SL unit can be used for other signals. The S&H clock can be applied also from outside to synchronize the S&H to other signals.
If required, the internal clock signal is available at a pin header of the pc board.

Notes: The first outing for KMA's unique and custom AI driven True Double Tracker technology was in the ENDGAME, their powerhouse end-of-chain pedal. KMA designed their dead-simple-to-use, TDT Algorithm in ENDGAME to be as authentic to the doubling recording process as possible, but they realise that not everybody needs all the bells and whistles of such an all-encompassing device.
However, the processing power requirements required for TDT meant a simpler device wasn't yet possible. But as demand from the community grew, KMA's team worked hard to squeeze it down and make it happen.
So, meet GEMINUS - all of KMA's True Double Tracker goodness in a compact pedal that's suitable for any board. Whether playing live or recording with a single instrument, GEMINUS is the perfect solution for adding "fatness" and "width" to your performances - it really does feel like you are playing the same riff twice!
Enabled via the soft bypass footswitch, GEMINUS accurately replicates the minor differences that exist between two separate recordings. The TDT WIDTH control spreads your doubled tracks, anywhere from completely centred (0%) to 50% left and right (centre indent) and 100% left and right split.
KMA has carried out extensive research on how to make double tracking sound exactly how they think it should perform. In the process, they've spent thousands of engineering hours working on our own proprietary technology, even developing our own custom neural network AI with onset detection in the process for our algorithms.
The mode for the TRS input and output jacks is selected by the toggle switch. You can choose between stereo in and out, mono in and stereo out or mono in to mono out, so no matter your signal and tonal desires, GEMINUS will fit into your rig with ease.
For the most accurate performance (and just like the real double tracking scenario in the studio), their custom True Double Tracker algorithm should ideally be fed with a mono signal. Obviously if you are trying to emulate what traditionally happens in the studio, you wouldn't normally double up a stereo source. Having said that, the TDT algorithm has been optimised to still have a useful and very pleasing widening effect on stereo input signals, just take care that using too much doubling on some stereo sources may cause your carefully crafted reverb, delay or other modulation effects to turn to mush or even add phase issues.
To help tailor the Doubling to your own taste, the TIME control changes the timing range of the doubled AI-driven onset detection. Essentially, it's all about the tightness of the doubled signal to fit differing playing styles. Variable from an extra tight mode, that's perfect for extra fast riffs, to a looser timing that can just the right amount of density to more open playing styles, this control is a powerful weapon to make your riffs fit your musical goals. The centre detent is GEMINUS' default factory position, but turning the knob left will give a tighter feel. Crank the knob to the right and the doubled signal becomes much more relaxed.
While the LEVEL control affects the balance of the doubled signal against the original source. Useful for those times where you might want maximum width, but a little less (or even more) of the sound to be doubled against the original. Centre detent of the knob is GEMINUS' default factory position. There's some clever panning stuff going on under the hood here too, so neither the doubled or original signal is louder on one side or the other, when in Stereo.
Finally, the new PITCH selector switch can add some additional movement to your doubled signal, extending the usefulness of GEMINUS beyond standard doubling. When the switch is at the centre default position (-) there is no pitch adjustment, (~) adds some subtle modulation, while (?) adds even more wobble. In this mode, it doesn't mean that your second guitarist will sound like they are off on a quest for enlightenment all on their own (!), it is just super handy for those times when you want more chaos and instability in your ensemble.
To top it all off, they've added a switchable real True/Buffered bypass and 'silent' relay-based soft switching. When KMA were testing our new pedal platform, they really loved the clarity and signal integrity of KMA's Buffered Bypass, plus there are zero clicks and pops when switching in this mode, which is why it is the recommended and default mode on shipping. So, meet GEMINUS - all of KMA's True Double Tracker goodness in a compact pedal that's suitable for any board. Enabled via the soft bypass footswitch, GEMINUS accurately replicates the minor differences that exist between two separate recordings. The TDT WIDTH control spreads your doubled tracks, anywhere from completely centred (0%) to 50% left and right (centre indent) and 100% left and right split.
KMA has carried out extensive research on how to make double tracking sound exactly how they think it should perform. In the process, they've spent thousands of engineering hours working on our own proprietary technology, even developing our own custom neural network AI with onset detection in the process for our algorithms.
The mode for the TRS input and output jacks is selected by the toggle switch. You can choose between stereo in and out, mono in and stereo out or mono in to mono out, so no matter your signal and tonal desires, GEMINUS will fit into your rig with ease.
For the most accurate performance (and just like the real double tracking scenario in the studio), their custom True Double Tracker algorithm should ideally be fed with a mono signal. Obviously if you are trying to emulate what traditionally happens in the studio, you wouldn't normally double up a stereo source. Having said that, the TDT algorithm has been optimised to still have a useful and very pleasing widening effect on stereo input signals, just take care that using too much doubling on some stereo sources may cause your carefully crafted reverb, delay or other modulation effects to turn to mush or even add phase issues.
To help tailor the Doubling to your own taste, the TIME control changes the timing range of the doubled AI-driven onset detection. Essentially, it's all about the tightness of the doubled signal to fit differing playing styles. Variable from an extra tight mode, that's perfect for extra fast riffs, to a looser timing that can just the right amount of density to more open playing styles, this control is a powerful weapon to make your riffs fit your musical goals. The centre detent is GEMINUS' default factory position, but turning the knob left will give a tighter feel. Crank the knob to the right and the doubled signal becomes much more relaxed.
While the LEVEL control affects the balance of the doubled signal against the original source. Useful for those times where you might want maximum width, but a little less (or even more) of the sound to be doubled against the original. Centre detent of the knob is GEMINUS' default factory position. There's some clever panning stuff going on under the hood here too, so neither the doubled or original signal is louder on one side or the other, when in Stereo.
Finally, the new PITCH selector switch can add some additional movement to your doubled signal, extending the usefulness of GEMINUS beyond standard doubling. When the switch is at the centre default position (-) there is no pitch adjustment, (~) adds some subtle modulation, while (?) adds even more wobble. In this mode, it doesn't mean that your second guitarist will sound like they are off on a quest for enlightenment all on their own (!), it is just super handy for those times when you want more chaos and instability in your ensemble.
To top it all off, they've added a switchable real True/Buffered bypass and 'silent' relay-based soft switching. When KMA were testing our new pedal platform, they really loved the clarity and signal integrity of KMA's Buffered Bypass, plus there are zero clicks and pops when switching in this mode, which is why it is the recommended and default mode on shipping. The two inputs and control voltages are normalized from left to right, facilitating easy stereo operation. These VCAs, designed primarily for voltage attenuation, are versatile tools that excel in scenarios requiring linear response. With audio, their true strengths shine when applied to amplitude modulation (AM) scenarios, where the benefits of linear control become quite significant. Although they are optimized for AM and voltage control, using exponential envelopes with these VCAs can transform them into two highly effective and fast VCAs for audio applications.
The threshold CV (0-8V) is crucial for the functionality of the blocks labeled with an asterisk (*): AND/OR gates, sequential switches, and flip-flops. By default, the threshold for each block (the voltage that must be reached at every input for the circuit to operate) is set very low, allowing almost any positive signal to be used. By increasing the threshold with an external voltage, you will change the point at which the circuits marked with the * begin to operate. This may seem a little tricky at first, but once you master all the functionality of the Toolbox, the Threshold CV rarely found in other Eurorack modules will open up many more possibilities!
Still composed of two identical parts, the second and third rows contain two blocks of two-channel summing (A & B). This region offers many ways to combine two signals. From left to right, input A, B, SUM out inverted SUM out, and two Boolean operators: AND/OR While any input signal can be used here, the first two outputs are primarily intended for audio sources. In contrast, the Boolean outputs are more suitable for summing gates and logic signals. This setup also allows for the use of both logic and analog signals together; don't hesitate to experiment with Boolean operators using analog or audio signals.For example, connecting two different LFOs to the input of the summing section can create many gate rhythms from the two Boolean outputs by varying the threshold with external voltages.
Summing mixers/Mult Out: This section consists of two 3-input summing mixers connected in series: the output of the upper mixer is routed to the first input of the lower mixer, allowing you to combine a total of five signals with two outputs available. At the heart of its design is the Transform knob: a unique, voltage-controllable parameter that shapes the character of each waveform. What It Is
FMR Audio's first product, introduced over 18 years ago, the Really Nice Compressor (RNC) is a compact and cost-effective stereo compressor with a high-fidelity audio path and compression scheme. The RNC provides quality compression at a budget price.
How It Sounds
The RNC provides two modes of operation. One allows the RNC to be used for special effects, like snappy snares or popping basses. The other provides near-invisible signal compression for sensitive material where compression artifacts are less desirable (like natural vocals, acoustic guitar or the program bus). The RNC yields clean, airy compression with few artifacts and little high-end loss, even at massive gain reduction! The amazing performance is why- even after almost 20 years- many professionals are calling the RNC one of the best sounding compressors for under $2000.
How It's Done
The RNC achieves such high performance at a low cost by using using a microprocessor to replace discrete sidechain components (resistors, diodes, capacitors, opamps, transistors, etc) with chunks of software, thereby reducing the component cost. This approach, however, still processes the main audio in the analog domain, avoiding the problems associated with digital audio conversion (e.g., latency, digital artifacts). Even the problem of "scratchy" pots and switches are avoided: no audio flows through the front-panel controls. What It Is
FMR Audio's first product, introduced over 18 years ago, the Really Nice Compressor (RNC) is a compact and cost-effective stereo compressor with a high-fidelity audio path and compression scheme. The RNC provides quality compression at a budget price.
How It Sounds
The RNC provides two modes of operation. One allows the RNC to be used for special effects, like snappy snares or popping basses. The other provides near-invisible signal compression for sensitive material where compression artifacts are less desirable (like natural vocals, acoustic guitar or the program bus). The RNC yields clean, airy compression with few artifacts and little high-end loss, even at massive gain reduction! The amazing performance is why- even after almost 20 years- many professionals are calling the RNC one of the best sounding compressors for under $2000.
How It's Done
The RNC achieves such high performance at a low cost by using using a microprocessor to replace discrete sidechain components (resistors, diodes, capacitors, opamps, transistors, etc) with chunks of software, thereby reducing the component cost. This approach, however, still processes the main audio in the analog domain, avoiding the problems associated with digital audio conversion (e.g., latency, digital artifacts).
