The 1976 debut album by Chicago soul, rare-groove and jazz-funk fusionists Tomorrow's People was led by the Burton Brothers. This reissue comes on red vinyl for the first time and is full of a dynamic blend of styles-from the sax-driven disco-funk of 'Let's Get Down With The Beat' to the doo-wop-tinged 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' and the fiery 'Hurt Perversion'. Review: It might be Pulp's first new album since We Love Life in 2001, but Jarvis Cocker has kept busy in that time, not least with his impeccable Jarv Is... project. Keeping himself match fit musically has evidently played into Pulp's hands because they sound inspired, at the top of their game and bound to consolidate their reputation one of the UK's most loved bands. Recorded with producer James Ford at Studio Orbb in North East London, they laid down eleven tracks in three weeks for this album and the lead single, 'Spike Island', is an enrapturing synth-led indie pop cut that whets the palate nicely for the other ten. The album is also their first since the passing of bassist Steve Mackay, who died in 2023. It is dedicated to his memory.

Review: Jarvis Cocker has opened Pulp into a nine-piece band for this resounding comeback, their first album in 23 years. With some members having been touring members and part of the Jarv Is... band - Cocker's made them more formally part of of Pulp, which is great because the likes of Emma Smith on violin and guitar (she played with Meilyr Jones previously) is an incredible musician to have around. The lead single 'Spike Island' is a song that like many of Cocker's classics you don't need to hear that many times before it's wedged in your head and your whistling it until the end of time. But Pulp is never in danger on relying on the topline; there's a textured, though-provoking underpinning that hints at how epic their live shows are set to be in the wake of this album, which does look handsome in that particular shade of green.

Review: The third studio release from Georgia-born vocalist Otis Redding captures one of soul's most transcendent voices hitting his stride. Recorded at Stax in Memphis with the label's legendary house band, the LP blends Redding originals like 'Respect' and 'I've Been Loving You Too Long' with impassioned reinterpretations of songs by Sam Cooke, B.B. King, the Rolling Stones, and more. Backed by Booker T. & the M.G.'s and the Memphis Horns, Redding delivers performances that are raw, urgent and unmistakably Southern - his voice rising from pain to exultation in a single breath. 'Ole Man Trouble' opens in a mood of wounded resolve, while 'Change Gonna Come' channels Cooke's civil rights sorrow with a gut-punching tenderness. 'Shake' and 'Satisfaction' bristle with brassy energy, offering a grittier counterpoint to their original versions. Despite being largely composed of covers, every track is transformed by Redding's vocal phrasing and the band's immaculate drive. What results is a tight, 30-minute lesson in Southern soul, uniting gospel, blues and r&b into something wholly its own. It remains one of the most complete studio expressions of Redding's short but seismic career - a benchmark of the genre and a defining record of the 60s.

Review: After the relative commercial un-success of their debut Whole Oats, Hall & Oates relocated to the Big Apple to record 1973's Abandoned Luncheonette, marking the start of their New York chapter, which perhaps artistically expressed their own debutant dismay. Produced by Arif Mardin, and in a rightly disgruntled fashion, the duo sought to distance themselves from commercial formulae, honing a unique sound that would later prove non-fungible. Keeping close to the pair's American roots, Mardin played a crucial role, and under his guidance, H&O would call the production process a vital learning experience. The second side of the record is notable for its guitarist Chris Bond's Beatles-inspired ideas, which he would later express as a regretful choice, as it deviated substantially from H&O's vision. But this is an overall "magical" record, as expressed by the duo themselves.

Review: Frank Popp Ensemble's fourth album, Waves, arrives via Unique Records, building on an eccentric "one-man concept" project that has enjoyed close to two decades of Northern soul vibe recreating. Review: San Fran-born Ben Kweller is a former member of post grunge band Radish, who were signed to Mercury Records in the 90s and count the mighty Nils Lofgren as a fan. His solo output, however, is a lot more prolific: this is his seventh studio album. Poignantly, the album is written in honour of what would have been his late son Dorain Zev's 19th birthday. This is Kweller's first release since Dorian's tragic passing in 2023. The album is blessed to have some incredible guests, Waxahatchee, The Flaming Lips and MJ Lenderman all lend a hand. And musically Kweller's power as a singer-songwriter is in potent condition - 'Dollar Store', which is two vocals and a guitar for the most part needs nothing more to captivate. That it then bursts into a distorted, soaring finale is just a bonus. It's no wonder the most talked about newcomers in America indie wanted to be involved with this album.

Review: French producer duo Dub Shepherds team up with Clermont-Ferrand vocalist Junior Roy for a nine-track set that follows the traditional showcase format: each vocal cut is paired with its dub. The A-side opens with 'Trodding On Jah Road' and 'Start a Revolution', both built on heavyweight rhythms and restrained instrumentation. Roy's delivery is clean and direct, rooted in 80s-style cadences without overplaying the retro angle. 'Fittest (Discomix)' stretches the format slightly, offering a longer vocal-to-dub transition. Side B begins with 'Problems' and its dub version, again prioritising balance over effects. 'Run' leans into a looser melodic structure, while the dub flips it into a more echo-driven space. The overall mix i handled by Jolly Joseph and Doctor Charty i keeps the low end upfront, but avoids excess. The dubs are labelled "Hardmix", though the approach stays disciplined: no over-saturated FX chains, just clean edits and steady pressure. A solid roots release from a studio clearly comfortable in its identity.

It's a brand new release that pulls from cosmic lounge, vintage dub and leftfield synth-pop, stitched together with just the right amount of space-dusted mystery. 'Footprint Affair' sets the tone with crooning vocals, squelchy bass and starry-eyed synths, while 'Looking For Clovers' rides a gentle shuffle that feels like a love letter to hope itself. 'Fizzy Spells' and 'Susanna's Side Eyes' are lighter, winking affairs, full of charm and earworm melodies. On the flip, dub versions stretch things further into the clouds i 'Alpha Nightsky (Bonus Dub)' in particular is a highlight, all woozy delays and submerged euphoria. It's the kind of record that feels both featherlight and deeply intentional i oddball but intimate, escapist but grounded. Review: The first recorded meeting of Pierre Bastien (compositeur Parisien) and Casper Van De Velde's (Belgian drummer known for his outings on Qeerecords) documents two days of lowkey live-performed regalia at Werkplaats Walter in Brussels. Set up by Blickwinkel, the residency saw Bastien's "miniature mechanical orchestras" - trumpets, motors, Meccano arms, all of which make up the former artist's trademark live machinic draw - click into orbit with Van De Velde's loose-limbed, textural percussion. Both artists work in detail and gesture before volume, moving gently but unpredictably, index finger tracing part-clockwork, part-creature pattern cuts.

Review: Bill Orcutt is hailed the world over for his distinctive blues-infused, free improvisational acoustic guitar rah, a craft he's honed since his 2009 solo record A New Way To Pay Old Debts, which marked his return to music after the dissolution of the influential noise rock band Harry Pussy. Beyond music, Orcutt worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley for over 20 years; and suitably, his more recent works have introduced homespun analogue guitar work to the art of electronic estrangement, technocratizing a formerly scruffy sound. After the experimental 2011 release 'Let's Build A Pussy', through which he manipulated a second-long "drum vocal" into an hour-long piece, here he further embraces the encroaching tide of digital tech with 'A Mechanical Joey', yet another 35-minute track spread over two antipodean sides; this one involves an outsider-arty, heteroclitic manipulation of a six-time Joey Ramone sample.

Review: First released in 1981 in the wake of Ian Curtis's death, the compilation Still served as both an epilogue to and archive of Joy Division's brief but seismic existence, beginning in 1980s Manchester. A one-of-a-kind compilation, its uniqueness stems from two non-album wranglings, 'Dead Souls' and 'Glass', which precipitate a revelatory ream of studio outtakes, before a raw, emotionally freighted live set from their final show at Birmingham University. That concert also captured the only time the band played 'Ceremony' live; the tune would later reappear, reshaped, on the other side of Curtis's death, as New Order's debut single. An unusually passable idiosyncrasy consists in the fact that Curtis' vocals are barely audible on this version, as was often the case with every live performance of the song. Now reissued, this has to be one of the most comprehensive four sides of formative post-punk supersession ever to hit the shelves.

Review: One of the flagship albums by Aaron Funk aka. Venetian Snares (alongside Songs About Cats, Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits 1972-2006, Winnipeg Is A Frozen Shithole and The Chocolate Wheelchair Album), Rossz Csillag Alatt Szuletett marks itself out in his sonography as a breakcore album which, aside from its lobotomising breaks, features mostly classical strings and brass. Gloomy and melancholic, the album's title translates from Hungarian to "Born Under A Bad Star", i.e. "cursed from birth", and the record transmits a superstitious chain of influence, with track 3 covering Budapest composer Rezso Seress' 'Gloomy Sunday', which was said to have inspired the suicide of the original musician's own girlfriend. Renditions of Mahler, Stravinsky, Paganini, Prokofiev and Edward Elgar all follow in morose but energetic fashion, demonstrating the Canadian IDM artist's quirkily sized collection of drill bits.

Review: A new compilation from Spiritual Jazz shows the genre's predisposition to thrive despite heavy political oppression, with underworld eminents euphonating their radical music despite a hard immuring behind the Iron Curtain, which represented the gash between East and West during the Cold War. Contemporary jazz and European folk collide on the first of a two-parter record here, reflecting muted but reassuring sonic utterances sounding against oppression, a somewhat unspeakable sentiment whipping across the Eastern Bloc of the 50s and 60s. Vagif Mustafa Zade, an Azerbaijani pianist, and the Manfred Ludwig Sextett, from the same era, are only two such featured artists; they helped push the embrace hard bop and modal, and the boundaries of what was permissible under the regime.

Review: The Iron Curtain, a politically charged term of the 20th century, symbolised the divide between East and West. Winston Churchill famously referenced this metaphor, describing how an "Iron Curtain" descended upon Europe, obscuring the actions behind it. This two-parter record from Jazzman does the impossible, lifting the curtain through sound alone, representing jazz's ablation of political and cultural barriers, as it flourished in Soviet states and exposed the contradictory histories of Soviet jazz, from the 1960s to the 80s. Despite Cold War tensions and MADs, the Soviets didn't hold their breath for a second, embracing the jazz modernisms of hard bop, modal, Latin jazz and Eastern folk-jazz. The resilience of jazz artists during an era of geopolitical conflict thus offers a sprightly affirmation of spirituality and formal reinvention, in the face of adversity.

Review: Given the sharp left-turn that Shelley took with his solo career after leaving The Buzzcocks, it's sort of irrelevant if you're a fan of his seminal punk band or not. This second solo album - now reissued - is an entirely different kettle of fish. Whilst the 80s is famed for a lot of innocuous releases, due to the industry flush with cash, this stellar electro pop album - originally released in 1983 - stands the test of time: it's more experimental and artful than the run-of-the-mill chart-botherers of the time. This is a record that conveys Shelley's ability to write timeless, direct, hard-hitting singles ('Telephone Operator') and veer into more sprawling and adventurous arrangements ('What Was Heaven?') with the fluency of a true auteur. Producer Martin Rushent is due his flowers here, too, as it was his and Shelley's evolved embrace of innovative studio techniques during these sessions that set the bar for The Human League and other classic acts around the scene at the time.

Review: The sophomore full-length from New Jersey goth-punks My Chemical Romance was originally released in 2004, changing both the course of their career trajectory as a band but also altering the mainstream acceptance of the goth/emo/alt scene in the 21st century ever since. While it was 2006's third full-length The Black Parade which would cement the band as alt rock legends, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge was an unprecedented success, fusing the macabre darkness of Misfits and Alkaline Trio with stadium-sized hooks to put the likes of Blink-182 or Green Day to shame. Review: Signed to blues rock master Joe Bonamassa's Journeyman Records, Joanne Shaw Taylor is one of the UK's foremost blues players and has delivered a transcendent tenth studio album. The Black Country singer and guitarist lets the natural twang of a Fender Telecaster ring brightly through the stomping blues classic 'What Are You Gonna Do Now?' and she matches her virtuoso playing with a commanding vocal take that puts her up there with the greats. 'Look What I've Become' sees her bare herAsoul to stunning effect as she lets rip with one of her best solos. Elsewhere, 'Summer Love' is a husky take on Americana with a more languid, feel-good vibe that reflects her ability to express almost any feeling through music. Clearly, Joanne Shaw Taylor has developed, since her 2009 debut, into a hugely accomplished member of the blues and Americana community, who doesn't just pay homage to her influences, but splices them into something new and her own.

Review: Originally released in 2015, this reissue returns to the stunning debut full-length from Canadian electroacoustic composer Sarah Davachi, who is rapidly becoming a big deal in the world of experimental sounds. Emerging from brief but acclaimed releases on labels like Important Records' Cassauna and Full Spectrum, this album marked her as a unique voice within the world of minimalist and experimental sound. Trained at Mills College, Davachi's work reflects a deep understanding of synthesis and acoustic instrumentation, with a focus on patience, atmosphere and tone over flashy modular theatrics. Rather than overwhelming the listener with density, Davachi builds a deep listening album full of impressive tracks. Vintage synths like the Buchla 200, EMS Synthi and Prophet 5 provide an enveloping tonal palette that reveal the composer's intent to create a more intimate, hybrid sonic language. The opening track 'heliotrope' unfolds like smoke rising into a high ceiling, shimmering with evolving harmonic detail. 'wood green' moves from near-silence to a radiant calm.
