Rock
Review: Brit glam gods Sweet's glory years in the 70s had a huge impact on generations of rock and pop that followed, with the likes of Motley Crue and Saxon covering them and countless others, from KISS to the Turner Prize winning artist Jeremy Deller, citing their influence. This latest compilation, dug from the private vault of guitarist Andy Scott, is a sizeable raid on their archives, with unreleased versions of a succession of massive smash hit singles including 'Blockbuster', 'Hellraiser', 'Teenage Rampage' and many more. It's easy to hear how the band's knack for anthemic choruses and tight, riff-driven rock has become timeless, and this is the sound of them at the top of their game.

Review: Nearly half a century after The Glow Of Love lit up dancefloors from Bologna to New York, Change return with Embrace: a sleek continuation of their post-hiatus revival, carrying the modern Italo dance group's name after early designs to release it as a Tanya Michelle Smith solo project. Produced by Stefano Colombo with input from founding maestro Mauro Malavasi, who also oversaw the title and artwork, the record builds on 2018's Love 4 Love with a dozen tracks folding disco, soul, and modern boogie into a freshly polished polygon of sprightly designer disco. While just 500 copies of the vinyl edition exist, the CD edition here exists in droves, and is sure to set any missed trick right.

Review: Seth Ford-Young's Phi-Psonics return with Expanding To One, a loose-limbed, quietly luminous third LP shaped from live sessions at Healing Force Of The Universe in Pasadena. Since founding the project in 2016, the East LA bassist has used Phi-Psonics as a vessel for collective improvisation and spiritual grounding, but this time there's a sharper edge; fourteen tracks, mostly conceived on the spot with a changeling group of collaborators, hear Ford-Young steer said ensemble through hushed dark jazz abstraction. With an ear for emancipatory politics - "the music we make doesn't exist in a vacuum and the backdrop of injustice and tragedy in our world has to be part of our music" - Phi-Psonics plays on a latent psionic ability in us all: to turn creative juices into truth.

Review: Deaf Center's debut LP gets a 20-year anniversary reissue on CD, pairing the original 2005 album with 20 minutes of unreleased material from the same sessions. Originally out on Type, Pale Ravine marked the first full-length by Erik K Skodvin and Otto A Totland, who've since carved solo paths via Sonic Pieces. Drifting between chamber composition, shadowy electronics and the hiss of old tape, the record draws on their Norwegian roots and personal family histories. Grainy textures, ghostly pianos and wind-blown field recordings conjure a mood somewhere between forgotten reels of silent film and weather-worn Nordic folklore.

Review: As an artist deeply rooted in Chicago's hip-hop scene, Greene represents the city with authenticity, blending golden-era influences with a modern, soulfully cinematic style. This album is a reflection of his life experiences, his growth as an artist, and his dedication to using his music as a platform for personal expression and social commentary. The title and opening track, 'The Grand Design', sets the tone with its soul-infused production by Phantem and Greene's introspective lyricism. The imagery of Chicago's harsh realities, the constant struggle and the search for meaning are central themes that echo throughout the album. Greene's ability to weave these elements into a cohesive narrative is on full display, especially in the way he captures the city's complex identityia place where beauty and tragedy collide. Throughout the album, Greene teams up with some of the finest producers, including Kenny Keys, Syer, Slot-A and Jay P, whose distinct sounds complement Greene's style. 'Street Lights', delves into the harsh realities of life, from systemic racism to the daily grind of survival. 'Ghetto Babies' offers an emotional and reflective look at the struggles faced by youth in marginalized communities. The soulful production and poignant lyrics make this track a standout moment on the album, with Greene and Bruiser Wolf providing raw, unfiltered perspectives on life in the ghetto. Philmore Greene proving once again why he is one of the most respected and influential voices in contemporary hip-hop.

Review: Mystery-heavy UK leftfield soul outfit Sault's 12th album feels like a deeply personal offering wrapped in some of the most radiant production of their career. With Inflo behind the boards, the album moves fluidly between soulful reflection and uplifting groove. Opener 'The Healing' speaks to emotional growth, inner peace and shared vulnerability. The message is clear: healing is a journey best taken together. Tracks like 'Power' and 'Know That You Will Survive' are driven by rich, pulsing basslines and lush instrumentation. They groove with purpose, rooted in funk and soul while sounding unmistakably present-day. Cleo's voice carries a calm authority, especially on 'Know That You Will Survive'. a song that delivers hard truths with grace and warmth. 'Look Up' springs to life with Pino Palladino's bass anchoring the song's ghostly harmonies. Tracks such as 'Higher Than the Rain' and 'Real Love' layer gently but build with quiet force. The subtlety makes them all the more gripping. But 'Sorry It's Too Late' lingers the longest. A simple piano line and Cleo's bare, aching voice create a stillness that's hard to shake. Through sorrow, hope and light, 10 is a graceful reminder that there's strength in softness.

Review: Brian Eno and Beatie Wolfe join forces on a dual release infusing two distinct musical visions rooted in shared environmental concern. Their new joint release unfolds across two sides, with Luminal offering a vocal-led collection leaning into alt-pop ambiances and timbres, before Lateral rears itself in counterpart as a seamless ambient composition, making up a study in contrast and connection. Recorded in London, the project reflects Eno's lifelong exploration of mood and atmosphere, alongside Wolfe's ongoing push to blur the lines of digital innovation and tactile experience. The project builds the activist art works of Wolfe, a British-American concept artist based in Los Angeles, named by WIRED as one of "22 people changing the world," and tracks the expression of music beyond language or form.

Review: Brian Eno's career has always been about explorationiof sound, technology and the emotional power of music. After pioneering ambient music, Eno has consistently sought out new ways to blend different genres and voices and his latest collaboration with Beatie Wolfe continues this tradition. Wolfe, a British-American artist with an innovative approach to music and activism, complements Eno's atmospheric world with her emotive, alternative vocals. Their work, recorded in London, moves seamlessly from the meditative to the experimental, with tracks like 'Big Empty Country' offering stark contrasts between the brightness of the day and the shadows of the night. This release is not only a nod to Eno's sonic experimentation but also a testament to his lasting influence as an artist who always seeks to connect art with broader societal issues, especially the environment.

Review: Brady Corbet's latest film is brought to life by Daniel Blumberg's ambitious score, which perfectly complements its sweeping narrative and brutalist aesthetic. Blumberg, a British composer and musician, fuses large-scale brass orchestrations, intimate piano melodies and dynamic jazz elements. The film, which spans multiple decades and tells the story of Hungarian architect Laszlo Toth (Adrien Brody) rebuilding his life in post-war America, is mirrored in the music's broad emotional scope. Blumberg worked with a diverse group of avant-garde musicians from across Europe, capturing their performances on location to maintain a raw, organic sound. Collaborators like Axel Dorner (trumpet), Evan Parker (saxophone) and Sophie Agnel (piano) inject the score with an improvisational quality that contrasts beautifully with the meticulously crafted film score. One of the most memorable moments comes during the jazz club scene, where a quartet of jazz musicians, including Pierre Borel and Simon Sieger, deliver an electrifying live performance. The score's most striking shift occurs in the film's 1980s-set Epilogue, where Blumberg teams up with Vince Clarke, transforming the main theme into a synth-driven anthem. The score's breadth, from intimate jazz to grand orchestration, makes it as integral to the film as the visuals themselves.

Review: The Iron Curtain stood as one of the defining metaphors of 20th-century division: a shroud drawn between East and West, described by Winston Churchill as obscuring all knowledge of life on the other side. But while the world fixated on ideological rifts and military standoffs, a parallel story unfolded in the Soviet Union and its satellite states: the quiet, defiant blossoming of jazz. This second of a two-part Jazzman compilation mini-series lifts that curtain, tracing the emergence of bold, genre-spanning jazz from the early 60s to the 80s. These recordings reflect the arm-in-arm influences of hard bop, modal, cool and Latin jazz, refracted through the lens of European folk traditions and hard-distilled through filters of restriction, secrecy, and sometimes outright prohibition. Pressure makes diamonds, and jazz, ever adaptable, flourished in spite of it all: the secret spirituals of an easily overlooked era.

Recorded in 1977, this live set showcases Schulze's modular synthesis mastery, weaving intricate soundscapes around pulsing sequencers, ethereal pads, and expansive improvisations. Review: Rain Parade's 1985 release marks a defining moment in the band's journey, offering a blend of jangly guitars and psychedelia-laced textures that epitomise the era's alt-rock tendencies. Hailing from Los Angeles, the band delivers a turbulent mix of influences, ranging from the baroque to the brittle, with a certain disjointedness that reflects their internal struggles. The production, led by Steve Gronback, offers a spacious sound that gives space to the atmospheric instrumentation, but the lack of cohesion leaves some tracks feeling as though they're searching for a purpose. Highlights like 'Depending on You' showcase the band's potential, but the overall effect is one of a group caught in transition, unsure of where they're headed. Tracks such as 'Mystic Green' and 'Gone West' encapsulate this feeling of aimless wandering, while 'Invisible People' stands out as an example of the band's unique blend of folk and psychedelia. Though compelling in parts, this album never fully realises its promise.

Review: From Tanworth-in-Arden to Wimpole Street and the Sound Techniques studio, Nick Drake's journey to his debut full-length is laid bare in this meticulous, four-disc archival set, authorised by the Drake Estate and mastered by original engineer John Wood. Originally released on Island Records in 1969, the album's making is told across more than 30 previously unheard outtakes, Cambridge demos and alternate takesitracing the evolution of songs like 'Day Is Done', 'Saturday Sun' and the devastating 'River Man' from fragile sketches to finished elegies. Disc one's "Beverley Martyn demo" reveals a more tentative, companionable Drake, while the Cambridge reel captures a private world of haunting, early ideas ('Made to Love Magic', 'My Love Left With The Rain'). The studio takes on disc three show a singer still searching, his signature phrasing emerging through repetition and rejection. A sixty-page book, pressed on textured stock and written by Neil Storey and Richard Morton-Jack, completes the reissue. A landmark document of a quiet revolutionary who shaped modern songwriting through understatement, nuance and myth.

Review: This 2024 edition of Lament by Ultravox is a comprehensive, end-all-others 7CD + DVD deluxe edition expander including a (you won't believe) 72 tracks, with a newly remastered version of the album alongside a fresh 1980s-style extended remix. The seventh studio album by British new wave pioneers, Lament marked the final appearance of original drummer Warren Cann until the band's reunion in 2012 with Brilliant. But despite the name and the grievous context, the album was hardly lachrymose in sound, and it achieved much commercial success, owing to a prosperous prior experience with producers Conny Plank and George Martin, who drove its lush Chrysalis synthpop sound. Aforementioned remixes include contributions from Moby, Steve Wilson, Blank & Jones, and Midge Ure, while a newly mixed full concert recorded at Hammersmith Odeon in 1984 comes stapled in at the end. Mastered and cut by Phil Kinrade and Barry Grint at Air Mastering, London.

Review: Geir Jenssen (Biosphere) marks his AD93 debut with The Way Of Time, wrapping elucted echo and looping synth drift around spoken fragments of Elizabeth Madox Roberts' great 1926 novel The Time Of Man. A Midwestern gothic literary staple, Roberts' novel is about the daughter of a Kentucky tenant farmer, and Jenssen's haunting use of Joan Lorring's voice from the 1951 radio play adaptation readapts his usual icy predilections for suitably huger desert horizons. Rather than treating the vocal as ornament, he folds it deep into the mix, letting it dissolve into the melodic architecture.

Review: A collaboration rooted in intuition, Clay finds UK experimentalist Matthew Herbert and South London drummer-vocalist Momoko Gill stepping into strange, emotionally vivid territory, stretching the song form into new shapes on their first full-length collaborationi a record that's as textural as it is emotional. Built from improvised sessions and strange source materialiJapanese kotos, basketballs, domestic clatterithe music feels both homespun and futuristic. 'Calm Water' opens with uncanny stillness before 'Need To Run' and 'Mowing' introduce a kind of fractured longing. Gill's voice dances above the dust-clouded rhythms of 'More And More' and 'Heart', sometimes like a jazz phrasing exercise, other times like something closer to prayer. Even the more dancefloor-leaning momentsi'Babystar', 'Show Me', 'Someone Like You'iremain intimate, the spaces between notes stretching wide. On 'Animals' and 'Circle Shore', they seem to hover in slow-motion, guided by instinct and restraint. It's a record with no interest in genre boundaries, powered by instinct and a quiet refusal to settle.

Review: More than four decades after he first appeared in smudged eyeliner and a mop of jet-black hair, Robert Smith is still finding new ways to pull his music apart and stitch it back together. This new remix collection i assembled and curated by Smith himself i feels less like a victory lap and more like a restless dissection of a legacy he's still actively shaping. The collaborators here are hardly incidental: Four Tet, Orbital, Ame, Chino Moreno, Mura Masa, Trentemoller, Mogwai. It reads like a list built by someone still hungrily tuned into the present, not stuck in the past. And true to form, the results are all over the place i a feature, not a flaw. Some tracks lean into grandeur: Paul Oakenfold's take on 'I Can Never Say Goodbye' opens with all the sweeping melodrama you'd expect, while Daybreakers stretch 'WarSong' into widescreen synthwork. Elsewhere, Shanti Celeste and Ex-Easter Island Head bring a strange intimacy to 'Alone', teasing out its ache with a different kind of spaciousness. At times, you wonder if Smith enjoys seeing how far his work can be bent before it breaks. But it never does i even filtered through others' hands, his sense of tension, drama and deep emotional unease holds everything together.

Review: The sixth instalment in Anthony Braxton's Trillium cycle pushes the boundaries of the operatic form into new metaphysical and improvisational dimensions. Rooted in Chicago's avant-garde tradition but unfolding via a live recording in Prague and a studio session in Darmstadt, the project spans four actsi'Voyage To The New World', 'Robots Versus Humans', 'The Three Sisters' and 'Four Disasters'ieach one housed in an abstract narrative world that operates on dream logic. Braxton, now 80, spent five years developing this work, his most ambitious opera to date. Alongside Swiss conductor Roland Dahinden and the PMP Ensemble I Orchestraione of Europe's most forward-thinking groupsihe weaves twelve solo voices through dense and shifting compositional systems. The box set includes over six hours of material, from the operatic performances themselves to behind-the-scenes footage and a feature-length documentary. This feels like a culminationian 8-CD monument to Braxton's singular synthesis of AACM-rooted jazz, experimental classical and radical improvisation.

Review: Originally issued in skeletal form as a CD-R in 2004 and completed posthumously by Peter Christopherson and Danny Hyde in 2006, this reissue captures Coil's final studio-era transformation i leaner, sharper and pulled into strange rhythmic shapes by live performance energy and Ableton-era experimentation. The Weston-super-Mare collective, once studio-bound, now wrangle blown-out beats, sampled horns and hurdy-gurdy into ceremonial, fractured pop. 'The Gimp (Sometimes)' and 'Teenage Lightning (10th Birthday Version)' hum with unstable joy; 'Sex With Sun Ra (Part One - Saturnalia)' becomes a dense, writhing invocation; its sequel folds in eerie pipe drones and Christopherson's heavy edits. The 'Wraiths and Strays' pair trace the evolution from rehearsal to stage, adding field recordings, live vocals and modular sprawl. Even their lullaby cover, 'All the Pretty Little Horses', feels raw and revelatory. This is Coil at their most vulnerable and direct, embracing rhythm and song form without compromising strangeness i a defiant, dreamlike document of a band pushing forward even as time ran out.

Roots/Lovers Rock
Review: This first-ever CD anthology of Culture's earliest singles captures the trio in their purest, most incendiary form. Formed in 1976 by lead singer Joseph Hill, with Albert Walker and Roy Dayes, the Jamaican group emerged under the name The African Disciples before becoming Culture and signing with Joe Gibbsione of Kingston's most revered producers. What followed was a run of revolutionary 7"s and 12"s, including the seismic 'Two Sevens Clash', whose apocalyptic prophecy shook the reggae landscape. These recordingsinow collected in full, dub sides and allichart the group's 1977 to 1981 run with Gibbs, a period widely regarded as their peak. Tracks like 'Zion Gate' and 'See Dem a Come' show their power not just as writers of militant roots reggae, but as spiritual messengers, blending dread prophecy with hypnotic riddims. Even in dub form, these versions retain urgency and weight, anchored by Hill's unshakeable vocal tone and Gibbs's rich, bass-forward production. Later work with Sonia Pottinger would push their sound further afield, but what's here is raw, righteous and definitive. Eight tracks make their CD debut, finally doing justice to an era of singles that shaped both Culture's legacy and the wider trajectory of roots reggae itself.

Review: Edinburgh-born Barry Can't Swim made a solitary splash with Loner, now reissued some months after its initial release on CD. The album dived deep into the producer's personal landscape, shaped by a year of self-reflection and a global total live show wipeout, finding romance in the contrasts between adolescent aloneness and global superstardom: in the 21st century, we find it a relief to believe they're hardly incompatible. Lead single 'Different' has in the time since set itself apart on dancefloors the world over, its euphoria meeting a patchwork of influences, while always seeming to conjure some wonder and speculation as to the man behind the beats: always navigating identity, (dis)connection and change.

Originally released in 1989, The Greatest is a choice career retrospective and update to the earlier 1989 compilation album Decade, where the new wave band's evolution over the elapsing of yet another decade solicited further tribute. Tracks like 'Notorious' flaunt their seamless move into funk-infused pop, while 'The Reflex' catches the polished, experimental edge of their mid-80s era. And of course, the Bond theme "A View To A Kill" remains to this day the only 007 theme to reach number one in the US.

Review: While not the band's final album, there's a solid argument to be made that 1995's Worry Bomb was Carter USM's last hurrah - a top-ten set that marked the beginning of the end for the distinctive South London duo. This expanded 30th anniversary edition pairs a remastered version of the original album -which boasts typically gritty, soaring and powerful classics such as 'Young Offenders Mum', the punky 'Airplane Food/Airplane Fast Food' medley, the riotous 'Me & Mr Jones' and the introspective 'My Defeatist Attitude' - with a disc of B-sides and rarities and, most excitingly, a previously unreleased live album of their performance at the 1994 Pheonix Festival. Review: The twelfth studio release from Manchester duo Marconi Union reaffirms why they remain such a quietly vital force in ambient music. Formed in 2003, the pair's latest work arrives after a two-year process of reorientation i one that saw them scrap old habits, test new material live, and ultimately return to the atmospheric instinct that first defined them. The result is a seamless 55-minute composition split into nine movements: fluid, immersive, and full of emotional nuance. It's a brand new release that spans sequencer-driven passages, low-lit drone work and impressionistic electronics, all stitched together with an elegant sense of pacing. 'Eight Miles High Alone', the first piece completed and shared publicly, sets the tone with a solitary pulse and slow-building tension i its clarity and weightlessness shaping much of what follows. The music unfolds without force, evoking both disquiet and release. Though wordless, the journey speaks volumes. A sense of modern anxiety hovers throughout, yet it's counterbalanced by warmth, space and stillness. After years of refining their sound across acclaimed releases and multimedia collaborations, Marconi Union deliver some of their most affecting work to date i not by reinventing themselves, but by rediscovering the beauty of doing less, slowly, and with purpose.

Review: After a five-year split, Atomic Rooster returned with renewed force on their sixth studio album, Atomic Rooster, pushing into heavier territory sligning au naturel with the emerging new wave of British heavy metal. Released in 1980, the album marked a sharp turn from their earlier, more progressive leanings, favouring a nude, aggressor rock sound. Guitarist and vocalist John Du Cann reworked two tracks, 'She's My Woman' and 'Where's the Show?', from his unreleased 1977 solo work The World's Not Big Enough, breathing into them second life within the Rooster framework. Though the 2005 CD reissue stirred interest with rare demos and extensive sleevenotes, it remains an "unofficial" release due to copyright issues with EMI. 'Do You Know Who's Looking for You?' later found new life via a Finnish-language cover by rock band YUP.

The new nine-tracker extends the tracked terrains of 2019's Tutti, blurring personal reflections on years of loss and upheaval into prosthetic electronic soundscapes. Review: Since the early 2000s, Wagram Music - a French indie label known for a diversity of releases from across the "cool" spectrum of hip-hop, jazz, soul and funk - has conceived many an ingenious studio compilation. This specialism granted them their toehold in the music industry, and would later also confer them their powers in the domains of publishing and "distro". For now, though, we're firmly camped in with the comps, as their breakout feature, Funk Masters, returns for another round. Long charting the backstreet talents of the likes of Odyssey, Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic, and Anita Ward - among a longer list too great to mention in its entirety - this is an unstoppable series. This time we're in ever more wondrous company, as the Masters contrast to 2022's Vintage Sounds, with further brill selections from Bobby Byrd, T-Connection and Isaac Hayes.

Review: Composed in New York by the Baltimore-born minimalist Philip Glass and released in 1971, Music With Changing Parts was the album that put his vivid, colour-rich sound on the map, marking a shift away from the ultra minimal 600 Lines (1967) and Two Pages (1968). Performed with free instrumentation, the piece allows musicians to switch between eight staves at specified cues, generating abrupt shifts in texture and timbre. Though its melodic material remains tightly looped and minimal, changes in orchestration continuously refresh the sonic landscape. Most striking is the psychoacoustic illusion Glass observed during rehearsals: when multiple players repeated the same short patterns, sustained tones seemed to emerge on their own. He eventually formalised this in the score, permitting long notes to enhance the effect. What results is a hallucinated resonance that pulses and flickersian early indication of the harmonic depth he would later bring to works like the miestone Einstein On The Beach.

Review: Bruce Springsteen has been sitting on these recordings for yearsiwhole records, not sketchesisome finished, some forgotten. Now they finally surface, spanning 1983 to 2018, and offer a different kind of self-portrait: one less polished and more exploratory. The earliest material finds him navigating a path between the haunted quiet of 'Nebraska' and the radio gloss of 'Born in the USA'. Later sessions toy with drum loops, synth beds and orchestral swells. One batch plays like the soundtrack to a film that never existed; another leans into pedal steel and modest country sketches. There are borderland narratives, noir-ish ballads, E Street-style anthems. That New Jersey gritithat plainspoken clarity he's carried since the boardwalk daysiruns through even the softest tracks. He says he made this music to please himself and close friends, and you hear that freedom in its variety: some songs feel raw and just-found, others fully formed. There's no tidy arc, but that's part of its charm. Across seven discs and 82 songs, what emerges isn't a legacy project but something quieter: a window into how a working musician keeps working. You don't come away with answersionly a better sense of how far Springsteen will follow a song just to see where it leads.

Examining the unseen mechanisms that guide daily life - dream logic, half-formed memories, fleeting emotions - he now blurs the lines between perception and reality with densely packed verses and meticulous self-produced beats. A brooding, cinephilic album recalling the atmospheric street wiles of filmmakers like Wong Kar Wai, the playful 'Send Help', contemplative 'Movie Night' and dusky 'Black Plums' chart strange emotional terrain, brought to life through warped sonic forensic architectures and sharp lyrical precision. Joined by Lupe Fiasco, Armand Hammer, Hanni El Khatib, Open Mike Eagle and Homeboy Sandman, the album pivots constantly, driven by intuition but grounded in detail Speaking on the record's emphasis on public bareness, Rock remarks on 'Checkers', a song "about the neighborhood outside your home being the great leveller. Review: New York's Billy Woods is not just a rapper but a confronter of disavowed, barbaric truths, where the sordid, postcolonial gluts of American oligarchy are refracted through an excoriating, critical and surreal lens. The prognosis has always been dire: Woods' lyrics - whether on his debut History Will Absolve Me (2012) or the more recent Haram (2021) - are prophecies against the sputtering machine-regime of racial enmity, where the Other is misconceived an essential cog in societal works. Golliwog ramps up the bad trip factor, suggesting an eerie mix of negritude and irresolution, with a supporting cast of musicians ensuring a wonky production prowess: Kenny Segal, Conductor Wiliams and LA jazzists Human Error Club. Frantz Fanon is proclaimed a zombie, as licentious lyrics run amok on 'Misery'.

Review: Genesis' double concept album from 1974 is a seraphic work, telling the surreal, mythic story of Rael, a Puerto Rican youth navigating a dreamlike New York City filled with bizarre characters and symbolism. Also Peter Gabriel's last album with Genesis, it marks the moment that the 'Solsbury Hill' singer left to pursue a solo career, thus curtailing the era of "progressive Genesis". Hailed as one of the most influential prog rock albums of all time, it exalts Genesis as early users of ambient, synth-driven moodscapes, which serve as transcendent backdrops for Rael's "ashy to classy" bildungsroman. As a Puerto Rican street kid embarks on an odyssey of personage, the album reaches a staunch climax in an archetypal castration scene. Also doubling as a live show in which Peter Gabriel donned grotesque costumes and leathery hides to represent Rael - not quite Broadway, but close - this new set comes complete with a 1975 tour programme reproduction, replica ticket, poster and a 60-page coffee table style book featuring rare images and new liner notes by Alexis Petridis.

Review: This 2xCD edition goes well beyond nostalgia, offering the definitive take on Soft Cell's most illicit and club-focused chapter. Originally released in 1982 their second album was a bold pivot: less of the noir cabaret that had its roots in their Leeds Poly days, more MDMA-drenched disco detachment. But what felt fleeting at the time now reads like a fully formed vision. The first disc captures the original six-track run, including a furious remake of 'Memorabilia', the twisted funk of 'Sex Dwarf' and their glam-stomp take on 'What' i a track that somehow hit Number Three in the UK while sounding like it belonged in a haunted backroom. The second disc expands the picture with extended cuts like 'Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go' and 'Torch', all of which showcase how Soft Cell flirted with pop but refused to smooth their edges. It's a new reissue, but more importantly, it's a reminder of just how ahead of their time they were i turning sleaze into sophistication and dancefloor detritus into poetry. Digitally remastered and packed with rarities, this is as complete a portrait of Soft Cell's ecstatic peak as you'll find.

Review: The Cure's live albums has always been a generous collection, and perhaps it pinnacled with the ruinous film shot in the depths of southern France, Live In Orange. But this double-disc set of live radio recordings from 2005 and 2008, capturing the band in two late-period phases, hears them in a rawer, prenatal stage. Though often folded into goth rock, the band has always hovered just outside the lines, blending post-punk moodiness with pop precision and sonic excess. In the dusty wake of their most recent album, Songs Of A Lost World, these sessions pull from across their catalogue, from the shimmer of 'Plainsong' and 'Just Like Heaven' to the frayed aggression of 'Shake Dog Shake', 'Disintegration' and 'Us Or Them', all still burning with drama.

Review: The Doobie Brothers make a triumphant return with a revitalised lineup, uniting founding members Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, John McFee and Michael McDonald for their latest release. With a legacy built on infectious harmonies, impeccable musicianship and a genre-blending approach, the band has long been a staple in American rock and pop. Their newest project, produced by John Shanks, reflects both their storied past and evolving present. The album touches on personal themes of growth, recovery and a deepening understanding of life's essential truths, each track showcasing the band's uncanny ability to weave Americana, rock and soul into an expansive yet cohesive sound, while collaborationsiincluding a stirring appearance from Mavis Staplesiadd emotional depth. Tracks like 'Angels & Mercy' and 'Learn To Let Go' embrace themes of growth and recovery, while the title track, featuring Staples, offers a sense of hope and unity. As ever, the Doobies navigate complex emotions with timeless ease, proving that their distinct blend of optimism and introspection still resonates deeply, even after decades of musical evolution.

Review: Puce Mary (Posh Iso mainstay ambient drone project of Finnish artist Frederikke Hoffmeier) and Incapacitants (Osaka noisemakers born in 1981) collide in a scorched-earth live set recorded at MODE Tokyo in 2024, now pressed to wax by 33-33. A rare, feral document of noise at its most combustible: no edits, no overdubs, just raw signal to collective destruction. Incapacitants - Toshiji Mikawa and Fumio Kosakai- open with a wall of full-spectrum chaos, sharp and seismic, whence as the intensity peaks, Mary enters, slicing through with her signature burn of texture and dread, pushing the set into new extremes. Less a blend, more an escalation into dread and void.

Review: After a year spent adrift, Rival Consoles - Ryan Lee West - returns with his ninth full-length, Landscape From Memory, and with it, a rekindled spark. Having stepped away from his self-built studio in Hackney amid the comforts of routine, West embroidered this record from scraps: demos recorded on the road, acoustic sketches caught through a laptop mic, grainy textures brass rubbed against lustrous synth tabula rasa. Leading light 'Catherine', a dedication to his partner, is bare and buoyant, following renewed processive energy. 'In a Trance', 'Known Shape' and 'Gaivotas' further flex West's fondness for propulsive rhythms and irregular sonics.

Review: This is Mark Stewart of Pop Group fame's Bowie Blackstar moment. An innovative and expressive masterpiece that sounds ahead of its time. Completed shortly before the Bristol-born legend's untimely passing in April 2023, this is a posthumous release on Daniel Miller's Mute label - a label that's had a strong long-term connection with the fearless visionary. The album was co-produced by another all-time great in British music - Killing Joke's Youth, who is responsible for a swathe of the most interesting new music out there at the moment. The first track to be released from it, 'Memory Of You', shows what an incredible singer Stewart was, with a righteous nod to the Walker Brothers and Sinatra in his timbre. It's a truly welcome surprise and hats off to those releasing this in Mark Stewart's memory.

Review: Originally released in 2004 as their sophomore full-length, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge would change both the career trajectory of New Jersey goth-punks My Chemical Romance whilst simultaneously turning the genre on its head with its unique fusion of macabre Misfits and Alkaline Trio worship married to the stadium-sized hooks and melodies of Blink-182 and Green Day. While it would be 2006's follow up The Black Parade that would turn the band to alt rock giants, it all started here with the iconic pop-punk banger and hit single 'I'm Not Okay (I Promise)', whilst later singles 'Helena' and 'The Ghost Of You' highlighted their expansive melding of emo, post-hardcore and punk rock, elevated by vocalist/lyricist/graphic novel illustrator Gerard Way's uniquely grim vision and Billy Borgan-esque vocal cadences. Certified Platinum less than a year after initial release, and selling 3 million copies in the US alone, this new deluxe edition features an entirely new remix plus four previously unreleased live recordings.

Review: Brooklyn record distributor Atypical-dopeness offer the next edition in Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs series. Following a four-tracker of largely unnamed tracks released in 2020, Iboga continues the series, this time with an iterative avatar to top up Claussell's ever-moving house continuum. Claussell's output has lately taken on an ancestral turn, influenced by the hallucinations caused by chewing the roots of an iboga plant, a chemico-spiritual fixture of initiation ceremonies found across Central Africa (whether Claussell actually did take ibogaine isn't clear). What we do know is that, in dialogue with his heritage, Claussell found himself inspired by these initiatory rituals and so set about producing this eleven-track heart-rouser, fusing the overdubbed recorded sounds of Gabon, Cameroon and Congo with his own summative, spiritual, salubrious house sound.

Review: Epic alert! New York industrial gods Swans' latest single is a 19-minute behemoth that unfurls like an overwhelming emotional landscape. Gira's gravelly voice takes centre stage, enveloped by the steady churn of droning guitars and atmospheric textures that build to a blistering intensity. 'The Healers' and 'I Am A Tower' highlight the band's mastery of long-form tension, each section holding, stretching, and twisting in a way that feels like a momentary release, only to be swallowed by the next wave. It's a slow, deliberate unfolding of sound that's both hypnotic and punishing. This isn't music for the passive listener; it's exhausting yet utterly immersive, teasing out tension and reflection in equal measure. If you didn't know already, consider yoursefl warned.

Review: In 1989, Oakland played host to a rare meeting of American rock heavyweights, with John Fogerty leading a set packed with Creedence Clearwater Revival staples and solo favourites. Joined by Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, as well as saxophonist Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, the night emulsified key figures from rock's most influential chapters. First aired live on FM radio, this now remastered CD captures the full performance, including raucous renditions of 'Born on the Bayou', 'Proud Mary', and 'Fortunate Son'. The set showcases Fogerty in commanding form, bridging his swamp rock roots with the celebratory energy of the guest ensemble.

Review: Robert Smith has always treated remixing less like revision, more like ritual i a habit that's followed him since his days in Crawley, West Sussex and then surfacing officially on the first Cure remix album, 1990's Mixed Up. This triple-disc release of reworkings from the band's latest LP Songs of a Lost World feels assembled with obsessive care, mapping out every possible mood lurking beneath the surface. There are club-ready flips, yes i Sally C, Danny Briottet and Gregor Tresher all push the rhythm forward i but they sit beside glacial pieces that feel more like haunted sketches than reworks. Mura Masa's take on 'All I Ever Am' is disintegrated almost beyond recognition, its vocal a flickering memory. Mogwai's 'Endsong' feels like the end of the world in slow motion. Even Chino Moreno turns in something striking i 'WarSong' morphs into a sludgy howl with heat-warped edges. But it's the sequencing that surprises: these aren't bolted together, but grouped in arcs, as though Smith were arranging the bones of an old idea into something still alive. Four Tet's version of 'Alone' is a high point i deeply textured but featherlight. Like all The Cure's output, what really matters is the feeling of being drawn somewhere, and Smith's hand never letting go.

Review: Wire's formative late-70s run gets the 7" treatment with Nine Sevens, a box of nine vinyl singles spanning 1977 to 1980. Remastered from original analogues, the set pulls together six Harvest-era sides, one from Rough Trade, an unreleased 1980 session, plus the hard-to-find 154 bonus EP - all wrapped in replica artwork and housed in a sharp Bruce Gilbert-designed box. We follow Wire's rapid evolution from clipped punk minimalism into stranger, shiftier terrains, where terse, abrasive, and knowingly off-centre master-demos abrade the ears like rusty scalers. Each 7" sees a staggered digital release, but these tracks won't be lumped into any retrospective, making this the only way to get the full physical set.

Review: Mansfield's B-Movie were among a clutch of bands in the early 80s whose members had abandoned their formative thrashy guitar punk influences, and embraced broader, arty, keyboard-laden electronic post-punk. They had a light and catchy, yet brooding Cure-esque hit titled 'Remembrance Day', which shot them up the ranks on the UK gig scene and landed them a record deal. Most of the material they recorded once they got signed was, however, confined to Universal's vaults until very recently because B-Movie had line-up issues that hindered their ability to release an album. Now out of the clutches of contractual obligations, the band have unearthed the album that never was and titled it - quite aptly - Hidden Treasures. Ultimately, they are one of the great 'lost' bands of the early 80s and upon tuning in you can hear that they had in abundance the individuality, style and excellence to have shot them up the charts and made them a household name, had this material been their debut album. Thankfully, they have righted the wrongs of history and they can hold their heads up high forever for having made such brilliant music in their first era.

Review: Will Holland's first official mix release under his most familiar alias is a snapshot of a global career spent building communities across Bogota, Brooklyn and Brighton. Opening with the warm introspection of JJ Whitefield's 'The Mind Is A Palace' and the hazy psych-funk of The Heliocentrics, the selection soon tilts into submerged electronics via Dialect and Alfa Mist's brushed jazz motifs on 'In My Defence'. JKriv's 'Pifeiro Malandro' and Quantic's own 'Twang' bring syncopated bounce, setting up cumbia futurists Frente Cumbiero and a percussive remix of 'Theme From Selva'. Later, 'Eko Eko' and a live version of 'Motivic Retrograde' thread together low-slung breaks and synth-rich ambience, before Meridian Brothers' 'Un Grande Nubarron Se Alza En El Cielo' and The Maghreban's 'Covent Garden' ramp up the oddball charm. Anna Morgan and Ehua lock in high-BPM club energy on 'Throw Dat Azz' and 'Scintille', while Turbo Sonidero's 'Kumbia ESSJ' and Sobredosis's 'No Llores Por Mi' land like final toasts to dusk before the sun vanishes entirely. The journey ends, naturally, with a continuous mix of it all.

To mark the occasion, the Cologne-based imprint has decided to deliver an anniversary compilation featuring (mostly edited) versions of some of its most iconic club hits, underground gems and early obscurities. It does a terrific job in explaining, via music, the label's contribution to European electronic music culture - think 'maximalist' minimal, off-kilter tech-house, ambient pop, synth-heavy hypnotism and twisted, off-kilter nu-disco. Naturally, all of the label's most significant contributors are present (Superpitcher, Justus Kohncke, Robag Wruhme, Gas, The Orb, Jurgen Paape etc), alongside artists you probably didn't realise had released on the label.
