Review: Berlin-via-Tokyo artist Courtney Bailey lands on Naarm's Animals Dancing with a debut packed with hypnotic force. Three versions of 'I Wanna Feel You' form the core: the Berlin cut drifts in slow and hazy, Bailey's bilingual vocal wrapping around a rubbery acid line and slinky percussion. Tornado Wallace's Tokyo version ramps up the pressure with sharper drums and a more focused low end, while the short version distils its essence into a tooly spiral. 'Animals Ate The Mushroom' is a wild-eyed polyrhythmic trip, bristling with shakers, broken FX and warped animalistic calls. 'I See The Future' edges closer to dancefloor propulsion, FM bass flickering beneath spectral vocals and birdlike synths. Released on Wurundjeri Country, this marks the offering number 12 from the label and a powerful first move for Bailey. Equal parts lucid and dreamlike, it imagines a world just out of reach: a city populated only by animals, where language breaks down and rhythm takes over.

Review: Billie Holiday's late career 1958 LP through Verve Records caught the legendary singer at a relatively intimate stage: substance abuse compounded financial difficulties, which imposed a toll on her already turbulent personal life, and Holiday's once-pure, all-powerful voice was showing signs of wear. A title like All Or Nothing At All would certainly seem to express the captive intensity of an industry that "breaks" artists in more ways than one, and despite the mixed reviews on release, this small combo-backed record is of one artist's broken but still functioning sensitivity. With Harry "Sweets" Edison and saxophonist Ben Webster, Holiday croons over 12 tracks, recorded over five sessions in 1956 and 1957, showcasing a more restrained vocal style that pierces clearly through and despite pharyngeal ills.

Review: Legendary UK indie outfit Suede dropped their Sci-Fi Lullabies album back in in 1997. It was soon established as one of the greatest B-sides compilations ever made and became a fan favourite. The record captured the band's creative peak while drawing from the Dog Man Star and Coming Up eras with tracks like 'My Insatiable One,' 'The Living Dead' and 'Killing of a Flash Boy' packed with Suede's romantic melancholy and jagged glamour. All those feature again on this beautifully recreated reissue. The original reached number nine on the UK Albums Chart and received critical acclaim for its depth and ambition and this 2025 version features refreshed artwork by longtime collaborator Paul Khera.

Review: In the wake of unprecedented flooding that devastated Rio Grande do Sul in May 2024 - claiming over 170 human lives and countless animals, and submerging entire cities -local artist Carlos Ferreira created Flux as a means to survive. Composed and recorded in just one week during the height of the crisis, the album began as a personal coping mechanism but soon evolved into something more: a sonic document of a region in trauma. Born of catastrophe, Flux manifests as a twinkling sonic blanket despite it, buoyed by dreams of alterity and belonging, its incredible Max granulations matching the pockets of hope implied therein. Stark, urgent textures mirror the patent despair of the moment, yet embedded within are quiet meditations on endurance, reflecting a labile openness to change from the guitarist-composer and longtime AvantRoots resident.

Review: Haworthia Records is a new sub-label of Luzerna that kicks off with Nomad Soul, an artist from Marseille who has been making beats for a decade. He likes to tap into dreamy 'scapes but keep the feet moving, and here he also colours his sounds with some 80s and 90s nostalgia on the 'Transpace' EP. 'Dropped' has a raw drum groove that stands you upright, 'Soul Hacker' has warped and psychedelic pads and hallucinogenic vocals, and 'Equal' is a thudding trance-techno pumper. 'Dub Spaced' shuts down with plenty of deep space eeriness, weird sounds and a throbbing, dubby low end.

Review: Detroit electro investigator MICRO4CE delivers a no-compromise double pack here across two EPs packed with nine tracks of raw electronic futurism and imaging. It is all rooted in classic Detroit electro and so-called hi-tech-funk so the sound channels early 80s influences like Nucleus and Mantronix while carving out its own cyborg-driven edge. 'Bass Situation 313' gets underway with swampy low ends and far-sighted chords then the likes of 'Borg Fightz' bring unrelenting coruscated drums and 'The Greed' is a more minimal sound with zippy synths and dehumanised vocals. This is seriously high-grade electro for heads who like gritty, futuristic and fearless sounds.

Review: Originally released in 1997, this underground gem gets a welcome reissue which suggests its impact hasn't dulled a bit. This is classic late-90s techno - from New York's Trebbi via an Italian label - at its most urgent and hypnotic, with enough character and raw drive to still hit hard in today's dancefloors. The title track, 'Control' is an Italian stomper through and through in a heady, trance-tinged banger with tight sequencing and a relentless pulse. It surges with a kind of controlled chaos with that turn-of-the-century energy where techno and trance often blurred lines. It sounds remarkably fresh with tight production and timeless structure. Side-B begins with 'Liquid Rain', diving into tribal techno territory with percussive swagger and a rolling, humid groove. It's a slow-burner, but one that pays off in deep, body-moving momentum. Closer 'Interface' strips things back into a proper warehouse tool i functional, fierce and full of grit. This reissue is more than nostalgia i it's a reminder of how enduring and versatile this sound can be.

Review: Three years after Ticket to Shangri-La, Young Gun Silver Fox return with a polished showcase of contemporary AOR and blue-eyed soul that could be a long-lost gem, but it isn't, it's all new. The duo of Andy Platts of Mama's Gun and multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee really deliver here with achingly lush melodies, breezy harmonies and effortlessly smooth vocals that embody their signature mellow sound and tap into all the classics of this genre. From start to finish, Pleasure is steeped in warmth and nostalgia yet feels refreshingly modern and it's a must-have if you like soulful, feel-good pop and yacht rock. With a major European tour ahead, this duo continue to prove they're at the heart of today's AOR revival.

Review: The soundtrack for Risk of Rain 2's Seekers of the Storm, is here making its vinyl debut, and it's an edition fans won't want to miss. Composed by Chris Christodoulou, with a special contribution from Stavros Markonis, this release brings some atmospheric and powerful music to life on a stunning looking record. The vinyl itself is a visual treat, featuring a striking blue, white, dark green, sky blue, and black marbled design. This soundtrack is housed in a beautifully crafted gatefold sleeve with artwork by Daniele Giardini. Review: Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's VIRUS series collects the pair's five minimalist electronica EPs 'Vrioon', 'Insen', 'Revep', 'UTP_' and 'Summvs (Remaster)'. Now compiled in a single compendium, which now takes shape as a limited edition slipcased nine album box set, the VIRUS name acronymises all five titles in an eco-friendly, cream-coloured case. With each EP appearing in order, commencing with the digital Y2K dusts of 'Vrioon' (2002) and ending on the more recent textural terminus 'Summvs' (2021), we've a whole two decades' worth of musical stylistic progression and transgression here. Each EP counterposes the other convincingly, not creating a through-lined opus more than complementing each other through sheer happenstance.

Review: Bassist and composer Joe Sanders shows he is unafraid to explore every side of his artistry with his new, genre-blurring album Parallels. It is a mix of live recordings with Seamus Blake, Logan Richardson and Gregory Hutchinson and dreamy, studio-crafted pieces with Jure Pukl and Taylor Eigsti that, between them, bridge signature East Coast grit and famous West Coast introspection. From intimate family moments to lush Italo-disco textures, Sanders threads his acoustic and electronic sensibilities into a cohesive overall listen that has plenty of fearless jazz exploration, deep groove and all-important emotional nuance. It is the sound of a musician at the height of his creative powers who is as curious as he is versatile.

Review: La Pambele, Bogota's salsa dura ensemble, distills the spirit of 1970s salsa while threading modern-day stories through every track. Their energetic and heartfelt music is a celebration of the culture that's so intrinsic to their city, blending bold rhythms with lyrics that hit close to home. In a city often perceived as less rhythmically charged than the coastal regions, the band defies the stereotype, delivering tracks like 'Para No Olvidar' and 'La Bella Y La Culebra' that pulse with energy and authenticity. Now receiving its first official reissue on vinyl, this lover's rock masterpiece finally gets the care and recognition it deserves. The man best known as Convextion assumes his ERP aka Event Related Potential alias for four more next level cuts that find him pushing his electro electronics ever more into the future. 'V/Eight' opens with a melancholic bassline under busy drum programming to get things going. 'Equiponderance' is more complex with squirming electronics, more hefty bass notes and serene background pads adding a third dimension. 'Engine Vibration' is a more gritty mix of busy analogue machinery and star-gazing chords then 'Enfield' closes with optimistic sonics and propulsive bouncy bass to end this cosmic cruise on a high.

Turin's Bunkereeno Kollektiv and ITALIA90 have come together to launch their own new label Anna Records and it debuts with a split EP from Tools 4 Seduction and Lachina. The Argentinian former goes first with the Italo-infused sound of 'Like on VHS' full of dreamy chords and retro-future drums. 'Choruscan' is brighter and happier with cheery chords and a wonky baseline brings the vibes. On the B-side, Lachina who hails from Turin flips the vibe with more strident disco-techno sounds and direct cosmic energy on 'Out Of The Past'. His 'Metallic Rain' then brings flashy synth arps and a speedy intergalactic groove.

Uruguayan label Eviterno Records makes a striking debut with a split EP featuring esteemed producers Stonem and Elias Sternin, and it's another that makes us take note of what is going on down there in South America. Stonem takes the A-side with two meticulously crafted tech house tracks. 'Banana Afair' energises with deep basslines while 'Jolgorio' fuses acid sequences and intricate drum patterns that embody the Uruguayan groove. On the B-side, Sternin delivers 'Quema Madera,' a hypnotic, acid-driven cut with commanding basslines before closing with 'Acufenos,' a melodic yet intense finale. This debut release has our attention and locked in for what comes next.

The RAH Band's iconic album Mystery celebrates its 40th anniversary with a reissue that finally fulfils plenty of demand for it. This marks its first vinyl pressing since 1985 after originally being created by producer Richard Anthony Hewson. The ageless album blends jazz, funk and electronic pop while placing great spotlight on Hewson's unique production style. With eight impeccably crafted tracks including the jazz-funk anthem 'Are You Satisfied?' and the chart-topping 'Clouds Across The Moon,' which reached #6 in the UK, the dreamy synth-jazz epitomised by 'Float' and the smooth sax of 'Out On The Edge' (which featured in Funkineven's DJ Kicks) ensure Mystery remains a timeless classic.

Okain brings the class to this final outing of the year from German tech titans RAND Muzik. It's a full-throttle 12" that wastes no time in getting down to business: 'Dirac Sea' combines funky drum programming with nice squelchy acid, warped synth lines and crisp percussion to soon sweep you off your feet. 'Pterodactyl Phaser' is smoother and has a subtle garage shuffle to its low end, while balmy pads keep things cosmic up top. 'Spintronics' then ups the ante once more with thumping tech kicks and lively synth lines. 'Circuit Model' shuts down with some nice psychedelic clouds and a busy bassline. Quality tackle for sure.

Still a classic, still a brilliant mixer. Nearly 20 years on the market but sounding just as good as ever, the Xone:92 seems like a bit of a bargain now.

Review: Recorded live at Copenhagen's Jazzhus Montmartre in 1963, Sahib Shihab's performance captures the moment when the saxophonist and flautist fully embraced both his roots in bop and his growing affinity for the avant-garde. Joined by an impressive cast of musicians, including flugelhornist Allan Botchinsky, guitarist Ole Molin, drummer Alex Riel, and the prodigious 17-year-old bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, the set unfolds with elegance and innovation. The opening '4070 Blues' is an exuberant, hard-bop driven piece, setting the tone with its intricate brass and rhythm section interplay. 'Charade' slows things down, bringing a contemplative, balladic feel, allowing Shihab's sax to shine. On side two, the ambitious 'Conversations' suite spans three parts, each delving into the complexities of improvisationirhythmic shifts and interplay between the musicians give the track a live energy that feels spontaneous yet controlled. Now working under the alias Balaphonic, long serving Manchester artist Danny Ward steers his ear for percussion into something warm, rhythmically rich and hypnotic. He opens with 'Sunflowers in Dub (Deep Summer Mix)', where sitar, harmonica and fluttering keys glide across a humid dubscape, then folds in sun-dappled samba on 'Disorganics (All Strings Mix)', all brushed guitars and delicate groove. 'Six Fingers' leans deeper into Afro-Cuban melancholy, while 'Udders' chops South American drums into psychedelic loops, teasing out low-end heft. A standout collaboration with Ocean Waves Brasil, 'Oxum' blends gentle acid with dreamy textures and Afro-Brazilian swing, before closer 'Bloco Manco' lets off the brakes-delay-lashed, bass-heavy and totally locked-in. It's music built for dancefloors, but with the patience and touch of a drummer who knows when to let things breathe.

This early gem - in fact, it was the maestro's first ever 12" record - shows a masterful command of space and melody, spotlighting a warm, muted trumpet tone alongside a pared-down ensemble. Anchored by a stellar rhythm section featuring a buoyant bassist, impeccable pianist and dynamic drummer, the performances exude a relaxed yet precise energy. Highlights include a fresh, distinctive take on the Dizzy Gillespie classic 'A Night in Tunisia', where the group reimagines the piece with effortless ingenuity. Original compositions add further depth, with a witty riposte to a well-known standard and a contemplative piece that lingers in the listener's mind. Review: Luniwaz LIVE is the sound of Scott Kinsey paying tribute to Joe Zawinul and Weather Report, not by basic imitation, but through fearless reinvention. The album was recorded live in Prague and brings Zawinul's spirit to life with raw energy and deep improvisation alongside Kinsey's seasoned rhythm section. As part of that, Hadrien Feraud and Gergo Borlai join forces with rising saxophonist Patrick Bartley Jr to blend jazz mastery with modern flair alongside guest appearances from Pedro Martins, Meredith Salimbeni and Bobby Thomas Jr, who further elevate the sound. Far from an exercise in nostalgia, this is a great reimagining of a jazz legacy.

Light In The Attic teams up with Laurie Anderson and the Lou Reed Archive for a thrilling retrospective, Why Don't You Smile Now: Lou Reed At Pickwick Records 1964-65. An expansive selection of songs all written by Lou Reed, during his mid-60s stint as the staff songwriter for the long-defunct label Pickwick Records, this is a rare glimpse of a master rock musician stepping out of the limelight over the course of 25 songs, yet still letting the form and contour of his voice and sensibility be heard. All this was achieved before Reed had at all launched his career with the Velvets; it may indeed be said that this pubescent 60s period was the firelighter to Reed's flame, as the label specialised in soundalike records that emulated the major pop hits of the day - it's no wonder Reed would absorb such emulations and take them in as his own, albeit with a Century-defining twist. Channelling everything from teenybopper pop to soul-inflected garage rock, whether byJeannie Larimore, The Hi-Lifes or The Hollywoods, we get a thorough look-in here as to what made Reed and his contemporaries tick, and what Reed made tick in turn, before the fame.

Digital

Starting as a crisp digital delay, this mode, when paired with the tap footswitch, covers a lot of ground for your delay needs. The "Red" modulator lets you adjust the dampening of the delay, making the repeats either brighter (emulating towards a tape or HIFI sound) or darker

Reverse

Instead of reading the delay buffer in a forward direction like the "Digital" delay we read the buffer backwards creating unique sound possibilities. You can further modify this sound with the "Red" modulator to adjust the dampening of the repeats to grow brighter or darker.

Granular

Takes the delay buffer and chops it up into "Grains" and then plays those grains back. The size of the grains, direction (forward/reverse), the speed (pitch) and location in the buffer is all randomized so every time you experience this mode it will be a unique exploration into granular synthesis. The "Red" modulator allows you to adjust the max size of the randomized "size" of the grains and the amount of grains from 1-5.

Re-sample

What if you want a more complex soundscape like other instruments are playing with you? Re-sample accomplishes this by playing the delay buffer at different speeds which changes the pitch and timing of the delayed phrases creating a more complex musical expression of what you are playing. "Red" lets you adjust the mix of the octave down and the octave up.

Hall

The least diffused of the reverb modes "Hall" allows you hear the reflective nature of the hallway your sound is in.

Plate

Emulating a classic plate reverb sound that is diffuse and reflective.

Chasm

An exploration into reverb design feedback networks that can allow for unnaturally large decay lengths.

Grim

Takes the "Chasm" mode and splits the output to a parallel octave down so you get the normal output + the octave down for a deep rich soundscape.

Looper modes

Gives you latching control over the rec/dub of your looper.

Momentary

Only rec/dub while holding the rec/dub switch.

Quantise

Works like the latching but will trim your loop to a division of the existing delay time.

Dennis Ferrer has already made sure he will go down in house history as a real pioneer, not least because of his epic anthem 'Hey.' This outing on Groovin shows he has many different styles in his arsenal as 'Sinfonia Della Notte' lawyers up the sort of sleek, hi-tek synth sequences that denied early Motor City techno, but over a deep mid-tempo house groove. The Afterlife club mix is more percussive, though lush chords soften the edges, and John Dahlback remixes with a more groggy, peak-time style. The Afterlife Sunset reprise is pure blessed out vibes for the more emotional moments of the night (or day.)

Review: A timeless German trance anthem receives a fresh twist with two new extended remixes. Amirali's remix brings a deep, melodic reinterpretation. It slows the tempo slightly, trading the euphoric urgency of the original for a more introspective atmosphere. Subtle synth layers ripple through the mix, while a haunting arpeggio dances delicately over a driving yet restrained beat. REZarin's version keeps closer to the uplifting trance roots. The iconic melody is front and center, with shimmering pads and a pulsating bassline that builds towards soaring peaks. The breakdown retains the nostalgic essence of the original, swelling with warmth before bursting into an energetic drop that's tailor-made for festivals. Both remixes nod to the chilled legacy of Ibiza sunset mecca Cafe Del Mar while adding modern textures i Amirali offers reflection, REZarin delivers exhilaration.

Review: Capodopere's eighth release comes from the enigmatic Vid, a dedicated genre explorer not bound by usual rules. Side A's 'Transpose' features a groovy dub bassline and intricate percussion that mesh together into a hypnotic rhythm that invites fluid body movement and deep mental immersion. Vid's subtle, warm textures make it both a dancefloor weapon and a cerebral experience then side-B's 'Stereochord' shifts to a darker tone with sequenced patterns and a deep bassline underpinning industrial textures and eerie echoes. The track's relentless energy and nocturnal atmosphere make it a real afterparty gem.

Deep Dish is one of these acts that made a huge impact in their early years before members Sharam and Dubfire went their separate ways and had just as accomplished solo careers. Fans have long clamoured for them to get back together and though there have been the odd DJ set together, there hasn't been the new music many would love to hear. Instead, this 20th anniversary edition of their George Is On album makes its way to vinyl for the first time for Record Store Day. It includes smash global hits like 'Flashdance' and 'Dreams' as well as 'Say Hello'. It's a great blend of sleek electronica and proper songwriting from the AIranian-American artists.

Grammy-nominated Texan psychedelic-soul band Black Pumas, led by Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada, return after their 2019 self-titled debut album - leading to the pair being put up for 'Best New Artist' in 2020 - with a bold statement to break the sophomore album curse. Lead single 'More Than a Love Song' is the perfect introduction to the sound, Burtons commanding voice riding on a wave of progressively zanier instrumental patches and choir vocal samples, with a sultry deep south tone that, oddly, reminds me of CeeLo Green. Quesada's production style is quick and loose, oozing with soul - nothing more to be expected from former member of Grammy-winning funk band Grupo Fantasma. The two describes Black Pumas as an "electric church", the synths and digital organs punctuating Burton's wistful wailing perfectly. If you're looking for a soul release to close out the year, this is it.

IO E Palmieri has cooked up the sort of anthemic and festival-friendly techno tune that will be heard all over the world as soon as the sun comes out and the big tops get erected. It has simple but effective rolling beats, some neat and rising melodies and a celestial Italian vocal that will get hands in the air as people march along. Naples-based techno star Debora De Luca then steps up to remix and quickens the groove and tightens up the synths so that are a bit more forceful. It's another effective cut from this big-time circuit favourite.

Yet another addition to Rhino Records’ Start Your Ear Off Right series hears a reissue of prog metal band Dream Theater’s fifth studio album and first ever concept album. A sequel to the thrillingly titled Metropolis-Part I: The Miracle and the Sleeper, this record builds an intensive recollective sonic theatre out of the mosaic themes of memory and depersonalisation. Themed around the subject of a young man undergoing past life regression therapy, the record is a compelling, initially psychotic howl into the night, and yet it proves an ultimately integrative, recursive experience, adding themes of murderousness and prophetic fate.

Experience the white knuckle energy of the band's early U.S. tour at the legendary punk club, with a mix of tracks from their 1977 debut In the City and their second album - also released '77 - This Is the Modern World. Technically named the Rathskiller, the Boston venue was nicknamed The Rat and built a reputation as a basement dive bar that has hosted acts that have gone on to be the biggest names in rock. The Jam are a case in point and on red hot form here with the Paul Weller-led band thrashing through the likes of 'Carnaby Street', 'In The City' and 'All Around The World' in an unpolished, ramshackle and intimate way that the studio albums can't conjure.

Genre-defying trio Little Barrie & Malcolm Catto - their bassist Lewis Wharton is the third one, if you're wondering - have created an album brimming with explosive energy and diverse influences fusing rock 'n roll, deep funk, jazz, and fuzzy atmospherics. Barrie Cadogan (guitar/vocals) has played with everyone from The The to Primal Scream, but this LP moves well away from indie templates, employing a freeform approach, experimenting with tempos, volumes and textures. Tracks like 'Spektator' and 'Sick 8' showcase their ability to build subtle momentum and then let it slip back, allowing space for intricate instrumentation and lots of vivid expression.
