Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

The 5 Seconds of Summer (10th Anniversary Edition) is a nostalgic celebration of the band's pop-rock origins, the infectious melodies and energetic rock vibes that marked their rise to fame. Featuring classic hits like 'She Looks So Perfect' and 'Amnesia', the latter showcasing their versatility with its stripped-down acoustic sound, while deeper cuts like 'Voodoo Doll' and 'End Up Here' remind listeners of the band's growth over the years. 'Kiss Me, Kiss Me' stands out with its infectious energy and the live arrangements add an extra layer of excitement to the song's performances. This anniversary edition not only revisits the chart-topping hits but also reminds listeners of the enduring quality of the entire album. This album became the soundtrack of countless lives, particularly during the mid-2010s and this picture disc is a great added touch to the package for fans.

Review: Early arrivals don cardboard masks of 5 Seconds of Summer, blown up to thrice their usual size. It's as close as many will get to the Aussie lads tonight, with dry ice and a low stage obscuring them from view. This visual absence, coupled with the venue's steamy atmosphere, creates a pop-punk rave vibe - fitting for 5SOS's pivot to arena-ready anthems on their debut. The set spans their evolution from YouTube covers to teen idols. Wildcard moments like the psychedelic 'Voodoo Doll' and acoustic 'Amnesia' punctuate the night, but new material dominates. Opener 'She Looks So Perfect' sets the tone, channelling Blink-182 for a new generation. 5SOS amplify their pop sensibilities: 'Don't Stop' drives a simple riff to emotional heights, while 'Good Girls' repurposes 80s power ballad synths into tear-stained pop-punk.Despite radio-friendly polish, 5SOS's shift to mainstream pop feels genuine. Their vocals transform them into heartthrob crooners on 'Kiss Me Kiss Me'. This pop pivot suits their songcraft, with melancholy no less affecting when paired with power chords and arms-aloft choruses.their yearning songcraft perfectly, the melancholy heart of 5 Seconds of Summer no less affecting when tethered to power chord orthodoxy and following the shortest laser-guided path to the arms-aloft chorus.

Review: Hunting High and Low, the 1985 debut album from A-ha, gets a reissue as a 6LP vinyl box set. Responsible for changing synthpop forever with their breakout 'Take On Me', the single's parent album here has been reissued numerous times, but this one aims to be the curtain call. With a whopping 64-page booklet detailing the band's origins thrown in on top of a mammoth four LPs, three of which contain a huge swath of unheard demos, B-sides and rarities, this is a cash-in on a much-beloved pop band we're sure will be eaten up.

Review: Here's a chance to cop a pivotal piece of R&B history on vinyl. Aaliyah's second album was released in 1996, when she was just 17, and she was already one of the most commanding artists in modern R&B. Working closely with Missy Elliot and Timbaland on a number of the tracks, she made a significant step on from her debut with a revitalised and forward-leaning sound, and all while finishing drama school and preparing to star in Romeo Must Die. One In A Million is solid gold start to finish, and given how costly original pressings of it can be on the second hand market, this reissue is long overdue so grab it while you can.

Review: Swedish pop legends ABBA seem to be as talked about these days as ever, largely down to the fact that the holographic stage show proved such a huge success with all those who continue to pack it out in the capital. They were very much at the peak of their powers back in 1981 when The Visitors, their eighth studio album, arrived. It actually saw the group move away from their super light and airy and catchy pop of previous works and enter more mature and complex musical worlds. The fact that Benny and Frida had recently split up coloured some of the tunes such as 'When All Is Said And Done' and even topical Cold War themes were explored.

Review: To the delight of the 80s synth-pop faithful holding on to the decade prior, Martin Fry revived ABC in 1997 after a five-year hiatus. It's noticeable that Fry wasn't interested in repeating old tricks though, as he took the band in a new direction alongside Heaven 17's Glenn Gregory without losing that keen sense of songwriting magic that made ABC so popular the first time around. Loaded with emotionally charged reflections on life, the universe and everything, this is a welcome pressing on blue and white marble vinyl which is limited to 1000 copies.

Review: This is a deluxe reissue of a real pop classic from back in 1997. ABC is a group that traces its origins back to Vice Versa, a Sheffield band formed in 1977 by Stephen Singleton and Mark White. They released the Music 4 EP after founding Neutron Records and Martin Fry, creator of the fanzine Modern Drugs, interviewed Vice Versa before later joining as synth player. By 1980, the band transformed into ABC, with Fry assuming lead vocals. The lineup included Fry, Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17, and Keith Lowndes. Though their debut album received acclaim from critics, it didn't achieve widespread commercial success. Despite this, ABC's fusion of pop and electronic elements laid the groundwork for their future iconic sound.

Review: Gracie Abrams returns with the deluxe edition of her sophomore album The Secret of Us (Deluxe), released via Interscope Records, now available on a special "moonlight" 2xLP vinyl. This release is her most expansive work yet, both sonically and narratively. Adding fan favourites like 'That's So True' and 'I Love You, I'm Sorry (Live From Vevo)' to the 20-track project, Abrams showcases her growth as a songwriter and vocalist. Collaborating again with Aaron Dessner and her best friend Audrey Hobert, the album captures the urgency and raw emotion of her live experiences over the past year.

Review: Gracie Abrams' new single 'Risk from her upcoming album The Secret Of Us displays her continued evolution as an artist. Known for her connections to Aaron Dessner and Taylor Swift, Abrams is now infusing her indie pop sound with touches of the rootsy style popularized by artists like Noah Kahan and Zach Bryan. Co-written with Audrey Hobert and produced by Dessner, 'Risk' features Abrams' signature trembling vocals and glassy soundscapes, paired with frank, conversational lyrics. The song captures the intensity of a crush that feels like a breakup. The accompanying video, directed by Hobert, is a standout, showing Abrams in a more playful light. Expect this album to do well in the pop charts and on radio with her mainstream direction.

Review: Now announcing her latest album 30, it's been Adele's longest ever hiatus between albums. Biting back at media hype earlier this year, our worries that 30 would be a "drum and bass record to spite you", in Adele's own words, have been assuaged; its lead single 'Easy On Me' is rather a dramatic, roomy, noir piano ballad. And now that the tracklist has been revealed, we can expect more of the same - belting emotion is, of course, what Adele does best. Watch out for interluding and ending collabs with Erroll Garner and Chris Stapleton, as well as the intimately titled 'I Drink Wine'.

Review: Even reading the words All Saints takes us back to simmer times, when pop music seemed far more innocent and pop stars - the female ones at least - wore far more clothes. The British group's self-titled debut album was cooler and smarter than many of their candied peers (Spice Girls, we're looking at you) and blended effortlessly soulful vocals with rich, atmospheric production. From start to finish, the album lays down emotionally charged and honest lyrics. The production is lush yet minimal, allowing the powerful vocals to take centre stage, with classics like 'Never Ever', 'I Know Where It's At' and 'Lady Marmalade ('98 remix)' all still oozing a nice new soul and r&b edge.

Review: Mayra Andrade's live album, recorded at Union Chapel, features the warmth and eclecticism of her music in an intimate setting. Known for blending Cape Verdean Creole, English, and Portuguese in her songs, she pulls from a variety of cultural influences to craft a sound that's truly global. Her live collaboration with guitarist Djodje Almeida, 'reEncanto,' takes listeners on a journey through her discographyifrom Navega (2006) to Manga (2019).Andrade's music dances between traditional Cape Verdean rhythms and contemporary beats, with touches of reggae, African soul and pop influences, making every performance feel both rooted and adventurous. Her voice, full of depth and color, effortlessly shifts between romantic ballads and playful, rhythmic tunes. A nomadic spirit is evident in her music as she reflects her life's experiences and travels. On stage, Andrade is stunning, and the energy she brings in this live recording transports listeners straight to Cape Verde's sun-drenched shores. Review: In around 2013, artists like Yung Bae pioneered the genre of future funk, which took elements from early Japanese city pop and funk from the 1980s, and turned it into hyper-compressed, dull and nostalgic explosions of sampledelic sound. But in turn, it reinvigorated interest in the particular brand of city pop that had been sampled - and those already in the know about it will know it was already danceable and driving enough. ANRI, the singer hailing from Kanagawa, was a central artist in this early J-pop sound, and unwittingly paved the way for this decades-to-come cultural routing. Funky live horns, dynamic vocal jumps and an optimistic feel cut across her 1982 opus Heaven Beach - a more laid-back and relaxed album compared to her other projects, and only her fourth. Emblematic of the Sino-nostalgia that has taken the vaporwave and future funk community by storm, it was one of her four earliest albums to be released with the timeless Japanese music trademark - the obi-strip.

Review: Japanese city-pop starlet Anri was a fixture of the late 1970s to early 80s, and renewed interest in her work has sparked something of a reissues incentive. Now her 1984, early-to-mid career album Coool sees a reissue via For Life alongside Bi Ki Ni, and further hammers home her romantic vision in disco. Unlike the aforementioned album, Coool is slightly more electronic and dancey, and meditates more on appreciating nature than romance, with standout track 'Gone With The Sadness' reflecting Anri's experience of getting away from the city and leaving the sadness that comes with urbanity by the door.

Review: Japanese popstar Anri continues to hear her entire back catalogue reissued - this time we home back in on Bi Ki Ni, her mid-career (1983) city pop opus, which laser-focuses on the romantic tropes of sunsets, beachside flings, and heartfelt goodbyes over cocktails in flight lounges. The coalescing of jazz, funk and disco meshes neatly as Anri glides tightly over each ultra-slick instrumental, with the aptly named 'Good Bye Boogie Dance' being a particularly neat highlight.

Each track blends thoughtful lyrics with her signature melodic style and there's a refreshing mix of full-band arrangements and stripped-back instrumentals. Her guitar work stands out, adding a raw edge to the songs, while her lyrics explore personal reflections and universal themes, as always with honesty and depth. Following an impressive debut and meteoric rise in the music industry, Asake signed with YBNL Nation, the label founded by one of the godfathers of modern Afrobeats, Olamide. The 12-track album features elements of traditional Nigerian fuji music, Afropop, and South African Amapiano and sees appearances from fellow Nigerian star Burna Boy and American rapper Russ. The results are an ethereal sonic oasis that clearly sets Asake apart from his peers. Includes the single, 'Sungba (Remix),' 'Peace Be Unto You (PBUY),' and 'Terminator.'

Review: The third studio album by the Nigerian artist Asake comes to vinyl through Empire, homing back in for a second time on the artist's pioneering flurry of several modish, "now" genre fusions for 2024. Asake has already garnered a name for himself as a neo-fuji artist, building on the classic Nigerian Yoruba dance genre in electronica fusion form, as well as incorporating elements of amapiano and funk. Lungu Boy was met with critical acclaim on its digital release, and now you can hear it in its fullest physical quality on marbled vinyl; the record's best moments have to be 'Worldwide' and 'Suru' featuring none other than British rap whiz Stormzy.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

From the first notes of the Talking Heads-esque opening of the title track, which has none other than The Cure's Robert Smith as guest backing vocalist, this album by the great Scottish post-punk legends The Associates has you hooked. It's littered with standout moments, but the wiry bassline which underpins the offbeat guitar on 'Amused As Always' is high up there. It manages to pull off being belligerently repetitive by offsetting any sense of monotony with sheer style. Meanwhile, frontman Billy MacKenzie - who tragically died before his time in 1997 - has a voice to rival that of Robert Smith himself in terms of tone. The Associates may not be as readily cited in the typical indie record collection - but they're probably your favourite band's favourite band. regardless, this album is going to challenge why you've resisted so long in not putting it at the heart of your collection.

Review: AURORA's new album What Happened To The Heart? on Decca was inspired after she read a life-changing letter in 2002 that was co-written by indigenous activists and titled We Are the Earth. It called for a revolution to address global warming and heal the land and described a deep connection to the earth through our hearts. This inspired the artist to explore what happened to this connection. She delved into human anatomy to understand when and why Western culture lost touch with the heart's deeper purpose and the result is a poignant musical journey from weakness to strength which explores self-healing, the power of vulnerability, and is the call to reconnect the heart with politics and personal growth.

Review: Aurora's What Happened To The Heart album is a hauntingly beautiful exploration of emotional vulnerability and resilience. With her trademark ethereal vocals and evocative lyricism, the artist delves into the depths of the human experience and ponders the mysteries of love, loss, and transformation set against a backdrop of lush, atmospheric production. Her poignant laments are both fragile yet empowering and her soaring melodies intertwine with introspective introspection of the sort that makes a lasting impact. As far as odes to the complexities of love and the enduring power of the human spirit go, you won't find many better than What Happened To The Heart.

Review: Norwegian pop singer-songwriter and artist Aurora released Infections Of A Different Kind as a two-part album originally in 2019. Owing to its grand success, it's only taken it five years to reach the status of reissue-worthy! "If there is a god, would we even know his name?... if there is a god, I think he would shake his head and turn away" is one spine-tingling tagline from the album's title track, which gets at the album's Nietzschean themes: be they the trappings of over-indulgent, coddled consumer socities; the climate crisis; or the widespread emphasis of individualism above collectivism. An album with a deeply political heart and soul, it was considered a tonal shift in Aurora's oeuvre, marking the explosive awakening she felt upon its making.

The clue's in the name as to the vibe Max is aiming for with this release, and lead single 'Maybe You're The Problem' sets the tone for a bright and bouncy strain of dance pop which will dig its claws in and have you humming along for the rest of the week. This is infectious, feel-good music of the highest order, and confirms what we already knew about Ava Max being an unstoppable force in the world of major label pop.

It is a musical time capsule of that decade and features some guest spots from the likes of Bia, Sophia Scott and Ellise, while production was taken care of by frequent collaborator J. There are plenty of crossovers between future house and bass music making it one of her most accomplished works to date.

Review: Few electronic music producers can claim to have made quite as big an impact as Arthur Baker. During the 1980s the New Yorker was involved in creating (or mixing) a string of ground-breaking electro, freestyle and proto-house records, before becoming one of the most in-demand remixers on the planet. This vast box set, which includes six weighty slabs of vinyl and an informative insert, celebrates his legacy, offering up a mixture of pioneering productions (Afrika Bambaata and Soulsonic Force's 'Planet Rock', 'Walking On Sunshine' by Rockers Revenge, 'Confusion' by New Order), dancefloor anthems (Freez's 'I.O.U', his enormous rework of Fleetwood Mac's 'Big Love') and a string of essential but lesser-celebrated revisions - all presented in full-length, DJ-friendly form. In a word: essential.

Review: California-born singer-songwriter BANKS, aka Jillian Rose Banks, creates moody, alternative pop with hints of contemporary r&b adding extra depths. After emerging in the early 2010s, she gained a cross-genre following with her downtempo, alt-r&b style and her debut album, Goddess, earned critical acclaim and gold certification with hits like 'Before I Ever Met You' and 'Warm Water.' BANKS followed three more albums and now drops her fifth which is another subversive blend of all sound that have gone before with an evolved attitude and still a great number of hooky groves.

Review: This is real catnip for hardcore fans of The Beatles (is there any other kind)? It is a long awaited, much talked about, often delayed 50th anniversary edition of the Liverpool band's Let It Be album. It is a super special package on 180-gram, half-speed vinyl across four different slabs. There is also a a 45rpm 12-inch vinyl EP as well as a large 105-page book in its own tasty die-cut slipcase. There are 57 tracks in all, all of which are in new stern mix format thanks to some great work by Giles Martin and Sam Okell. What else is there to say other than make suer you cop this true collector's masterpiece?

Review: Anywayawanna - The Best Of is a vibrant snapshot of The Beatmasters' trailblazing journey through late 80s/early 90s dance music. Known for their innovative fusion of house, hip-hop, and pop, this compilation encapsulates their most infectious hits with a who's-who of guest vocalists. Standout tracks like 'Rok Da House' with The Cookie Crew and 'Hey DJ/I Can't Dance' featuring Betty Boo showcase their knack for high-energy, floor-filling anthems. 'Burn It Up', with PP Arnold, and 'Who's in the House?' with Merlin MC, further cement their place in club culture history. The glossy orange vinyl edition adds a nostalgic touch, making this a great package of the era's UK dance scene.

Review: Natasha Bedingfield is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her debut album Unwritten with a special vinyl re-release and a London show. The album, which topped the UK charts upon its release in 2004, features hits like 'These Words,' 'Single,' 'Wild Horses,' and 'I Bruise Easily.' The title track, 'Unwritten,' recently experienced a resurgence after being featured in the rom-com film Anyone But You, entering the charts for the first time in 19 years and peaking at Number 12. Bedingfield expressed her joy at the track's resurgence, noting its use in the film and its popularity as an anthem over the years. Originally released as the third single from the album, 'Unwritten' became the theme song for MTV's "The Hills" in 2006 and reached Number Five on the Billboard Hot 100, earning Bedingfield a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The song's recent viral success on TikTok further underscores its enduring appeal.

Review: Electropop pioneer Andy Bell, who is best known as the lead vocalist in late 80s and early 90s group Erasure, releases his new solo album. The release is his first solo album since 2010s Non-Stop, Ten Crowns. Not one to settle for less than the best, the producer of this album, Dave Aude, has more number ones on the Billboard Dance Club chart than anyone else. Aude's also big in the pop world having worked with the likes of Britney Spears, Madonna and U2. This solo album's standout is a collaboration with Blondie's Debby Harry, titled 'Heart's A Liar'. Plus, 'Breaking Thru The Interstellar', which flicks back and forth between cosmic, introspective layered sonics and barnstorming electro pop that puts a kick in your step. Looking for some life-affirming pop music with conviction and style? Then look no further...

Review: Wewantsounds is set to reissue Steve Beresford's highly coveted 1985 album, Dancing the Line, originally released by the French label nato. Drawing inspiration from the fashion of French designer Anne Marie Beretta, the album features contributions from Beresford's Alterations bandmate David Toop, Alan Hacker, and Kazuko Hohki of Frank Chickens, with lyrics by Andrew Brenner. The music blends sophisticated ambient pop, driven by an RX11 drum machine, with synth funk and experimental elements. Tracks like 'Tendance' and 'Comfortable Gestures' have achieved underground classic status over the years. This reissue marks the first time the album has been re-released, with newly remastered audio by Translab in Paris, the original gatefold artwork, and a four-page insert with liner notes by nato's Jean Rochard. Steve Beresford, a prominent figure in British and international music since the early 70s, began his recording career with the Portsmouth Sinfonia and has collaborated with artists such as Derek Bailey, John Zorn, and Thurston Moore. In 1985, introduced to Anne Marie Beretta by Rochard, Beresford and Brenner crafted songs inspired by Beretta's designs. The resulting album, released in France in October 1985, features a blend of ethereal pop, funk, piano ballads and free instrumentals, making it a favourite among DJs and collectors worldwide.

Originally launched off the back of her breakout appearance on The Beatmasters' 1989 single 'Hey DJ / I Can't Dance (To That Music You're Playing)', Boo's first full-length reached number four on the UK charts and went platinum. This expander reissue compiles 12 originals and 14 bonus cuts, including multiple versions of the four hit singles, from the King John and Peter Lorimer mixes of 'Where Are You Baby?' to Vince Clarke's Oratonic mix of '24 Hours'.

Review: In what must be one of THE record releases of the year, Queen Bey is back with her majestic new album. As has been hotly discussed online, this album finds her embracing club music in no uncertain terms, with collaborators like Honey Dijon and Green Velvet lending their expert house touch to the fiercest force pop music has ever witnessed. The results are earth-shattering, as if we expected any less, and the due diligence on acknowledging the roots of house music culture is delivered with sincerity and authority. Make no mistake people, this is the real deal.

Review: Beyonce continues to redefine genres with her latest album, Cowboy Carter. Building on the momentum of her previous releases, she fearlessly ventures into country music territory, infusing it with her signature style and social commentary. The album's opener, 'Ameriican Requiem,' starts strong with its pointed lyrics and references to country music controversies. Throughout the album, Beyonce showcases her vocal strength and versatility, seamlessly blending elements of country, rock, and trap. Tracks like 'II Most Wanted' featuring Miley Cyrus and 'Tyrant' offer dynamic collaborations and infectious beats. Cowboy Carter is a fantastic romp through various styles of pop music. Beyonce's bold approach reaffirms her status as a trailblazing artist, delivering yet another classic album. With its depth, diversity, and undeniable artistry, Cowboy Carter will be an enduring impact on popular culture.

Review: Beyonce has nerve shied away from being bold. Her Cowboy Carter album is a testament to that because who saw her fusing country and r&b? The unique album undoubtedly showcased her unparalleled versatility as it explored themes of love, resilience, and self-discovery against a backdrop of twangy guitars, soulful melodies, and powerful storytelling. Each track highlights Bey's vocal prowess and ability to transcend genres and styles from heartfelt ballads to upbeat anthems. The production blends organic and contemporary elements to make for a soundscape that's both nostalgic and innovative.

Review: Beyonce's Cowboy Carter marks a departure from her typical genre-hopping approach, focusing specifically on country music while still infusing it with her signature style. Through tracks like 'Blackbiird,' Beyonce pays homage to the past while celebrating the contributions of Black artists to the genre, shedding light on trailblazers like Linda Martell. Despite its country focus, Beyonce's hip-hop and pop sensibilities shine through, resulting in a sprawling and ambitious album that explores themes of authenticity, roots, and legacy. Tracks like 'Just for Fun' and '16 Carriages' showcase Beyonce's storytelling and a glimpse into her interiority and the complexities of pop stardom. Cowboy Carter seamlessly blends traditional country sounds with contemporary elements, creating a unique sonic experience that transcends boundaries.

Review: Originally released in 2007, Bjork's Volta, and later named Voltaic, is considered to be one of the artist's greatest works, one which incorporates everything from African rhythms, industrial tones and even elements of hip-hop thanks to Timbaland's appearances on the LP. At the time of release, the album was and is still praised by critics, it spent a good 10 week's on Billboard's charts and explored another side to Bjork's many talents. If you haven't heard it yet, you have definitely missed out because it is truly magical.

Review: Following from the success of this year's Vulnicura LP, Iceland's Bjork has decided to release an acoustic companion made up of string-only reinterpretations; a more abstract and pensive piece, if you will. One Little Indian is the label, of course, but this time there are strictly no beats, and the only concrete sounds within it are the subtle and placid wails of Bjork's own voice. While it isn't truly a pop album, there is enough playfulness and charm to render it playable not only as a solitary piece of music, but also alongside other pieces...in an explorative DJ set, perhaps.

Review: 'Born Pink' hears South Korean mega-girl-group Blackpink explore the rosier side of their sound, in a sophomore effort that follows up 2020's The Album, not to mention a smattering of dazzling K-pop live shows. With production from the Sinclairs, Bekuh Bom, R. Tee, Kush and Teddy Park, this is a modern-day extravaganza of pop, EDM and stadium rock. An ultra-modern statement of all-girl solidarity, Blackpink continue to shoot to heights of fame we hadn't thought achievable, notably snatching the spotlight from boy groups of the same ilk such as BTS.

Review: There's no denying Domino know how to knock 'em down hard. Having already delivered long players from Cat Power, Bob Moses and Villagers just this year alone, they are now turning to Devonte Hynes who is no stranger to the label either. Negro Swan provides the London artist with his fourth studio album which in large draws from the lost souls of '90s pop. It's hard not to hear Michael Jackson, Phil Collins and R&B four pieces all at once in tracks like "Saint", and even "Charcoal Baby", while there's even suggestion of Will Powers' spoken charm in the words to "Family". More Contemporary touches of genre are there in the emotional, beat pop of tracks like "Chewing Gum" and "Nappy Wonder" without forgetting the tropes of neo soul in "Holy Will". A grand album wrapped up in the angel wings of Blood Orange's queer poetic.

The album, originally released in 2004, includes the global hit 'You're Beautiful' and was one of the best-selling albums of the year. This special edition has been remastered for 2024 by Stuart Hawkes at Metropolis. Blunt humorously acknowledges that while he's released seven studio albums, Back To Bedlam is the one that resonates most with listeners. With his trademark honesty and charm, Blunt quips about re-releasing the album to "milk it for all it's worth," highlighting his self-awareness and enduring popularity.
