Our Lord Debussy (9:52)

Adios, Florida (6:36)
The Rhythm Of A Dividing Pair (4:44)
Keep It Dark, Deutschland (2:37)
Review: Since the dawn of the decade, A Winged Victory For The Sullen has delivered occasional albums for Erased Tapes that effortlessly blur the boundaries between ambient, electronic experimentalism and emotion-stirring neo-classical music. "The Undivided Five" marks their first appearance on mighty British independent Ninja Tune, and seems a little more grandiose in scale and ambition than some of their earlier outings. It was recorded in eight different studios around Europe, with the pair combining atmospheric orchestration and traditional instrumentation with occasional glimpses of modular electronics. It feels like a stunning soundtrack to a movie we've not yet seen - unsurprising given that they have previously composed a number of scores - and genuinely gets better with each successive spin.

Review: Abra's Rose is a cult, still rather overlooked r&b gem that fuses brooding dark wave sounds with glossy hip hop production and plenty of stormy moods. The Atlanta artist showed plenty of her vulnerabilities in her lyrics, while also offering up some brighter beats than before. This duality makes it all the more complex and alluring and suitable for related listens in a range of different settings. Originally landing on Awful Records then reissued by Ninja Tune, it now gets another reissue on limited edition 2 x 12" pink vinyl complete with posters.

Review: The seventh album from South London-based producer and experimental maverick Darren Cunningham and it's a beauty. The last time we heard from him, in 2018, he was collaborating with the London Contemporary Orchestra and improvising a score for a Stockhausen opera and he's taken an element of that work with him and married it to disorientating, otherworldly electronics. 'Karma & Desire' has a real feel of escapism, almost to the extent of feeling like an out of body experience, as dislocated and disembodied melodies float around in the ether. There are the first proper vocal collaborations he's undertaken here, but the two tracks are no pop bangers, songstress Zsela's efforts sounding more like some beguiling abstract poetry. Travelling further and further, creatively, from the normal environs of dancefloor culture, he's not lost any of his spellbinding musicality or sonic storytelling skills.

Review: Darren Cunningham continues his inimitable exploration as Actress with a new album reportedly informed by game theory. Drawing on the tactics of chess as a framework for creating and releasing his ninth studio album, the artist himself describes this as a 'voyage into luxury sonics', and indeed 'Push Power (a 1)' has a certain languid piano jazz sophistication to it. But there's still plenty of that rugged, off-centre groove beating away underneath, and in its subdued and singular style, it feels like an Actress record through and through. Profound, moving and bold in its originality, this is yet another triumph for an artist who constantly shakes up the conventions of club music.

Review: Actress is back with another masterful diversion away from the tired old narratives of what dance music used to be. Darren Cunningham himself suggests this record is a 'voyage into luxury sonics', and you can find yourself carried away on some truly exquisite musicality whether it's the meandering jazz piano of 'Push Power (a 1)' or the haunting voices flickering through 'Game Over (e 1)'. Throughout, though, there's still that strong sense of Actress as he's always been, anchored by grubby rhythms, passing through a filter unique to his sound alone. This special edition of the album comes with a bonus disc containing the '88' LP, which originally only came out on tape and digital in 2020.

Review: Future beats, bass, grime and cinematic sound design all combine and mutate on this new offering from Iranian British producer Ash Koosha, his second full length. There's some hyper-speed glitch and breaks after the warped intro. The future beats of "Feather" or "Fool Moon" are noisy yet ethereal at the same time and its glitchy mirco-sampling will mess with your head. "Biutiful" with its mesmerising chime melody hypnotises beautifully until that epic beat comes in gloriously. "Shah" sounds like a liquid drum and bass record by LTJ Bukem played on the wrong speed.

Review: The arrival of this second solo album in as many years from US producer Lee Barron was preceded by the curious announcement he plans to be referred to as b (which translates as Not Bannon). Obviously Bannon feels Patterns of Excel is a landmark, with the producer looking to move on after spending some 14 months on the album. Those looking forward to more of the searing jungle instrumentals Bannon deployed on his excellent debut LP Alternate/Endings will be disappointed with Patterns of Excel a fifteen track exploration of glitchy ambient electronics and droning textures. It feels right at home on Ninja Tune.

Review: Edinburgh's Barry Can't Swim wattles organic textural elements around progressive house and techno emotes, inviting comparisons to Fred Again's pyjama-wearing, electronic cousin. Bursting on to the scene in the early 20s with bedroomy, Bandcamp self-starters like 'Different' and 'I Don't Want To Be Here', the common thread in Barry's oeuvre has become known as one of introspection, isolation and regression to childhood. Loner now hears him delve ever deeper into his establishing unthought known, one of solitary but deep-feeling inner world-building, matching the tremulous intensity of his fluid, jam sesh live shows.

Review: Barry Can't Swim, the Edinburgh-born electronic artist, shares his highly anticipated new album Loner on Ninja Tune, attesting the excitement factor of a new artist whose star power has reached boiling point. Proceeding the electrifying single drop 'Different' - a fan favourite and fixture of his enigmatic live performances - Loner carries on from the last Ninja LP When Will We Land?, as Barry continues to reflect on his personal journey, by way of toyshop melodies and ahead-of-the-curve dance textures. Barry explains, "If my first album was a collage of all the music I loved growing up, this album is my truest expression of myself and the past year of my life."

Review: Scottish artist Barry Can't Swim has made big moves in the last year or so and finally, he capitalises on his ever-growing momentum with a debut album on the mighty Ninja Tune. The multi-faceted talent explores his most broad and diverse range of sounds to date here with 11 sublime tracks that move from deep house to jazz, heavy and percussive Afrobeat to lush ambiance. Each of the tracks feels like a fine technical achievement with complexity at its core but never at the expense of good vibes, such as the choral harmonies on 'Always Get Through To You', smart samples of Brazil's Trio Ternura on 'Dance Of The Crab' and digital and organic blends on 'Woman.'

Review: Healing... first arrived in summer 2020, when most of us really needed to break the depression of life in and out of lockdown. Like so much of Barwick's work, these stunning choral moods offered a real sense of solace and refuge through deeply evocative sounds, with the theme of salvation carried throughout the beautiful pieces.

Even the title refers to an internet mantra poking fun at both the comedic and serious apocalyptic images we have all seen during the pandemic, and the possibility of humanity recovering. Initially unveiled as the disconnect between being 'saved' and 'lost' was at its peak, with the first vaccine now approved and light just about visible at the end of the tunnel things look different. But while we have never been closer to a solution, we have never been further from life as it once was, so the message here only resonates more.

Review: Ninja Tune welcome label debutant Julianna Barwick for a solo album born from imporovisaitozl sessions and endless loops of her own vocals. The LA-based artist has said the album was written during an emotional time and so it all comes from the heart, direct to you, with no real goal, aim or MO, other than making the sounds she feel at the time. "It brought me to tears a little," she has said of the process, and Nosaj Thing, Mary Lattimore and Jonsi al feature across the album's eight cuts of moody and evocative ambient drones. From heavenly and happy to more intense and introspective, it's a perfectly honest work.

Review: The Ninja Tune renaissance has been underway for around a decade now, with the UK imprint, founded by Coldcut way back when, firmly cementing its status in the techno, rave and future bass world post-millennia. So good is the heavier end of the stable output we really needed Julianna Barwick to come along and remind us of the imprint's more delicate moods. Known for her deep compositions that look to celebrate, explore and consider the human voice in its many facets, 'Healing Is A Miracle' is a perfect calling card for the artist in question. Utilising a spine-tingling vocal range, and taking us directly into worlds where sound itself is a form of art, not just when arranged, the record was apparently born from an improvisation session on her looping equipment, which in turn directs the construction of the individual tracks. The serene but complex, minimal but layered and heavily textured work of a synth siren.

Review: Beat Spacek aka Steve Spacek is a man who has seen it all and done it all. Well, not quite all because this latest project is quite possibly his best in recent years. Having worked with artists as diverse as J Dilla and dBridge, his sound is characterised by a hugely varied conglomeration of styles and influences, but also methods. For instance, we've been told that this LP is made up exclusively of sounds generated from iPhone and iPad apps, so it's easy to see the man's versatility and openness to new sonic territories. "Modern Streets" itself is an intricate cocktail of ideas, incorporating remnants of drum & bass, digital dancehall and curb-side poetry. The whole LP is a daring and successful view into Spacek's multifaceted mind as a musician. Recommended.

Bicep's second album is shaped by the experience of touring their debut long player for something like three years, a period during which they honed and perfected their instinct for tracks that would stand the test of time and repeated listening. What develops is a distinctive style typified by a combination of ethereal sonics and cheeky, memorable instrumental hooks, only set to a variety of beats that reference and indeed fuse the plethora of different dance genres that have sprung up since the acid house revolution if the mid-80s. So we get everything from the electro-tainted 'X' to 'Rever', where an African choir floats over a subtle deep house shuffle and 'Saku', where UKG bass pressure and skippy beats provide a hypnotic background for Clara La San's sweet but ghostly voice.

Review: Of all DJ duos currently operating in British dance music, Belfast boys Bicep might be the hardest to pin down (Optimo aside, of course). Certainly, this debut album is not easy to pigeonhole, though it is an enjoyably cohesive listen. This is largely down to two factors; the frequent use of deliciously colorful and loved-up synthesizer parts, and the duo's innate ability to utilize beats tailor-made for dancefloor devastation. So while keen dancefloor historians may notice sly (and not so subtle) nods to '89 rave, U.S house and garage, Italo-disco, late '90s progressive house, jungle and early British hardcore, the album never sounds anything less than a fine set of Bicep tracks. Expect it to be one of the biggest albums of the year.

Review: RECOMMENDED
And the story is complete. Well, sort of. Ninja Tune has been a label of many labels for many people, depending on where they're listening from, for some time now, but with Ants From Up There it's journey from imprint grounded in relatively specialised forms of sound to just an all-round music institution is finally done.

Black Country New Road make music that's a million miles from the techno that shouts so loud from the Ninja roster right now. Nor are they comparable to the platform's downbeat, hip hop, nu-soul, and electronica roots. Instead, this is truly commanding, powerhouse indie rock 'n' roll that's likely to find favour with fans of everyone from Pixies to Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire to The Clash. Proof, if it were needed, that in 2022, and for some years already, all-over-the-place output isn't just fine, it really works.
