D Lord - "Start The World"
Werner Williams - "You've Got Style"
Review: Universal Cave Records 003 pairs another record digging and DJ duo, Philadelphia's D. Lord and Werner Williams. D. Lord's 'Start the World' is stampeding euro funk with chainsawing clav and an unrelenting bass groove. Maximum funk effect achieved with vital precision. Werner Williams' 'You've Got Style' exudes cool. It's one part psychedelic synth groove and one part cockeyed classic rock, soaring harmonies & juju for days - a long lost cousin to Fox's 'The Juggler.'

Down By Law (Kenny Dope edit) (3:43)
Subway Beat (Kenny Dope edit) (3:07)
Review: Back in 2014, Kenny Dope's Kay-Dee label released a sumptuous 7" box set featuring killer re-edits of the breakbeats and groove tracks that were originally recorded for Charlie Ahearn's pioneering 1983 hip-hop movie Wild Style. Since that box now goes for serious money online, the Masters at Work producer has decided to reissue two of the set's most potent rework. On the A-side you'll find his version of Fab 5 Freddy's "Down By Law", where impressively deep and woozy synths ride a low-slung post-punk bassline and punchy funk break. On the flip, the Dope one serves up a DJ-friendly extension of Grand Wizzard Theodore's "Subway Beat", where woozy Moog lines wrap themselves around a snappy drum machine beat and rubbery slap bassline.

Busy Bees (3:13)
Review: Back by Dope demand, MAW man Kenny unleashes a highly limited 150-only 45" from 2014's much-needed remaster of Fab Five Freddy's seminal Wild Style score. Here are two of its many block-rocking gems; the slinky Kool & The Gang-style street struts of "Military" and the classically-toned bumblebee tracing "Busy Bees" where a faint buzz rises with intensity over a slower, smouldering break. Don't sleep.

Supalatino Vol 2: The Sound Of Funky Latin America
Louie Ramirez - "Do It Anyway You Wanna"
Willy Chirino - "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Baby"
Majesty - "The Barrel"
Lou Perez - "Afro Hustle"
Dom Un Romao - "Escravos De Jo"
Review: Following last year's inaugural compendium, Supalatino let fly with five more superb Latino disco joints include two massive cover versions. Louie Ramirez adds go faster stripes to People's Choice "Do It Anyway You Want", Willy Chirino takes Barry White up an octave or two without losing any of the sensuality. Elsewhere we get cosmic on the synth heavy "The Barrel" and conclude with the awesome harmonies and crooning horns of Dom Un Romao's "Escravos De Jo" which you may recognise in the extensive work of Joe Claussell. Supa stuff, don't sleep on this one.

Big Bird (feat Smoove)
Heartbreaker (feat The Allergies)
Review: Whilst previous Wack bumpers have come from Smov, The Breakbeat Junkie, DJ Rebel, Daytoner, and more, this 14th edition of tightly wrapped straight up party funk from the label is less forthcoming in the credit department. "Big Bird" is suitably named as it comes packing big drums, big hooks and a big build that's hugely reminiscent of Sly and his fam. Flip for "Heartbreaker" where The Allergies throw down a tweeter-tight rhythm and blues vibe. Super sweaty and highly charged with big claps and bigger riffs. Big indeed.

Tell The Truth (2:28)
Because I Love You (2:29)
Review: Absolute scorching stuff from one of the most dominant gospel voices in 60s funk. Originally released on Giant and Calla respectively (and licenced, remastered and released with Shirley's total blessing), "Tell The Truth" is a raw bluesy workout with fired up harmonies and brazen horns squeezing every bit of honesty from our souls, "Because I Love You" hits with a little more soul thanks to the big backing vocals and added melodic layers but strip it down to the bare bones and it's nothing but raw, unapologetic funk... And that's the truth!

Huxley's Howl (2:51)
My Blues (4:08)
Review: "Huxley's Howl" by Bay-area keyboard savant Howard Wales was originally released as a 7in single in the early '70s on his own Costal Records imprint. Luv N'Haight is proud to present the first official reissue of this classic slice of mid-tempo, instrumental funk, loaded with stabbing horns, explosive Hammond organ and heavy drums with a nice dose of psychedelic vibes to round out it out. The B-side "My Blues" chugs along at a slower pace, with a "bluesier" sound as the title suggests while keeping the same killer psych flavor as the A-side.

Known primarily for his work alongside Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia on their collaborative album "Hooteroll" while also appearing on the Dead's seminal "American Beauty" LP, Howard Wales had already established himself as a talented player during the mid-1960's working and touring with the likes of Ronnie Hawkins, the Four Tops and the Godfather of Soul himself James Brown. A true original and progenitor of the oft-used but mostly maligned "Acid Jazz" genre, Howard Wales paved the way for the psychotropically enhanced excursions of 70s' Jazz, Funk, Soul and fusion.

Review: Disco dub-a-holics will be flipping over this dusty four track chunk-a-funk-a-thon of re-edited grooves. You're a better man than I if you can ID these originals, but this record is spot on for the Rong, Idjut Boys, Moxie and Bear Funk disco-dub-punk heads. Some nice funky retro electro disco on "Shameless Edit" while "125" is a drummy electronic percussive workout with some cool filtered effects. Super Moroder soundtrack-styled action "The Bridge Ain't Over".

I Want To Show You
Review: Another Norman Whitfield offering under the artist guise of Wee - this is super rare connoisseur soul for the diggers among you. "I Luv You" is underpinned by a walking funk bass and a hooky piano refrain with lashings of soothing backing vocals. "I Want To Show You" is a slower paced soul gem that shows off Norman's writing and lush production skills. In a word, essential.

Let Me Do My Thing (Voodoocuts edit)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working order***

According to the South American music specialists at Matasuna Records, Ralph Weeks' 1971 single "Let Me Do My Thing" - recorded alongside backing Los Dinamicos Exciters - is arguably the most sought-after Panamanian soul record around. As this reissue proves, Weeks' original version is rubbery, heavy and rousing, with the singer's rasping lead vocal soaring above a weighty backing track that sounds like a breezier take on the New York boogaloo sound. On the flip, Voodoocuts tools it up for modern dancefloors, underpinning his club-ready edit with punchy new drums that give the cut more of a breakbeat style swing.

Review: One of the most influential and prolific men to ever blow a trombone, Fred Wesley has blown heads with some of the most legendary names in the game. But it's his work with The JBs that really captures his leadership command and raw funk. "Blow Your Head" is known to all, has been sampled and imitated by all and is loved by all. Review: Taken from a trio of 45s from the Vong45 record label, here the West Loop collective remake some of their favourite soul, jazz and funk tracks. This release in the series has West Loop remaking the original foundation to the A Tribe Called Quest masterpiece 'Electric Relaxation' - 'Mystic Brew' as recorded by Blue Note keyboard player Ronnie Foster in 1972. Featuring all live instrumentation including some fierce Hammond organ vamps, a deep rich bassline and a vibrant electric piano solo, West Loop revitalise the jazziness of the original on 'Part 1' but move into a funkier direction with 'Part 2' on the flip. Perfect 45 territory for the funk and hip hop DJs.

Review: Weston's curatorial crusade continues as he unearths more criminally overlooked/under-pressed rarities from the golden ages; "Losing You" comes from Courtial and Errol Knowles outstanding 1976 soul jazz album. The most straight up soul joint from the album, it's an instant sweat-fest with real guts behind both the vocals and instrumentation. Flip for the jazz funk whirlwind that is "Getting Down". LA Walk (Nik Weston extended re-edit) (6:10)
Review: It would be fair to say that Estiban Lindsay's one and only album, 1980's L.A Walk, is something of a sought-after rarity. Considered by many disco/boogie diggers to be a must-have, original copies of the Canadian classic currently change hands for three-figure sums online. Ever the dusty-fingered digger, Nik Weston has managed to license two tracks from the album after hearing global trotting DJ Hunee championing the main track in his sets in 2015 , and provides his own extended dancefloor re-edits. Both are subtly done, with Weston teasing out Lindsay's grooves and making more of his deliciously soulful versions, all without adding needless house drums or contemporary production tricks. The EP also contains the original version of the warm, disco-boogie gem "Come To Me". As played by Craig Charles (BBC 6 Music), Hunee, Eddie C, Tom Noble, Admin, Mike Shaw, Volcov, Frank Booker, Red Greg, Ashley Beedle, Joey Negro, Dom Servini, Miles Eastwick, Faze Action and many more...

This Time (4:29)
Review: Emotional Rescue previously dived into the plush, soulful and verdant sound of Jaki Whitren and John Cartwright with the reissue of their essential International Times album back in 2013. Sadly Whitren and Cartwright passed away two years ago, and this 7" of previously CD/digital-only material materialises in tribute to these wonderfully talented souls. "That Will Be That" is an effervescent boogie jam with rich synths that interplay beautifully with Whitren's stunning vocal, while "This Time" takes a starkly opposite approach with just the most delicate of keys lingering behind Whitren's powerful, echoing vocal. It's a poignant note of remembrance for two gifted musicians who shone their light into the world.

Review: Unfettered soul from one of the most consistent, reliable and loveable soul acts in modern days. "One In A Million" rolls with a gossamer groove thanks to its light-touched Hammond bed, tight horns and even tighter guitars. As always, the real focus (unless you're dropping the instrumental) is Nicole. Honeyed vocals that can't be mistaken, she fronts the track with heartfelt sentiment and subtlety that's hard to find in many new singers. Review: Warehouse Find! Released in 68, resurfaced in 05 and back with a very polite, well-polished edit, Spanky Wilson's cover of "Sunshine Of Your Love" is one of the best funk cover versions ever pressed to wax. Review: The Winston Brothers return with two fresh cuts on their latest 7" single, marking their first release since 2022's Drift. On the A-side, 'Straight Shooter' lives up to its name, a raw funk jam that could kickstart a b-boy battle. Funky guitar riffs, punchy horns, and tight drum breaks propel the track forward, its energy intense and unfiltered, thanks to an all-analogue recording on a Fostex 8-track. On the flip, 'Island Travel' takes a more laid-back turn. It's a hypnotic Afrobeat number, with dreamy flute work from Kimo Eiserbeck, blending ethno-funk with spiritual jazz vibes. It's cinematic, atmospheric, and offers a perfect contrast to the edgier A-side.

Review: The Winston Brothers make a triumphant return with two new tracks, this time pressed on striking blue vinyl, following the success of their 2022 debut Drift. The A-side, 'Straight Shooter,' is a full-throttle funk workout, packed with gritty guitar licks, sharp horns, and head-nodding drum breaks. With a raw edge and plenty of analogue warmth from the Fostex 8-track recording, it's a b-boy anthem in waiting. On the B-side, 'Island Travel' shifts gears into a more laid-back groove. A smooth afrobeat-inspired journey, it blends spiritual jazz and ethno-funk, with Kimo Eiserbeck's serene flute solo gliding over the hypnotic rhythms. Perfectly balancing the A-side's intensity, this one's for the heads looking to kick back and vibe out.

Review: TK Disco flashbacks are always welcome at Juno HQ: Here we find some of the label's later cuts in the form two 1980s jams: Wizzdom's 1980 bass-slapping, face-shaking boogie jam "Free Bass" and the funkier, more disco-aligned (and brilliantly titled) "Is It In". Completing the release is Herman Kelly & Life's "A Refreshing Love". Not originally released on TK, it landed on Electric Cat in 1978, but it provides sweet closure and context. Stripping back the groove and energy, it's a sublime sunny side soul piece that's still played heavily by DJs such as Scrimshire, Ash Walker and Andrew Ashong. Beautiful.
