Review: Comet Records continue their Afrika 70 reissue series with more from the pioneering and visionary Tony Allen and The Afro Messengers. It focuses on his best material from the late 70s, remasters it all and presses it nice and loud. The No Discrimination LP is as relevant now as ever in terms of its messaging, and musically it also holds up. The lyrics are socio-politically charged. The drumming is tight as hell and though this marks Allen's first solo album away from Fela's band, it finds him in fine form as he takes afrobeat into the future.

Review: Allison & The South Funk Boulevard Band's original album (first released on the Texas-based Crazy Cajun label) is mega rare and much sought after. If you find a copy it will be hella costly, but Superfly reissues it here so we can all delight in its glorious 70s soul richness. It is a broad and widescreen album that moves from quiet, slow, heartbroken soul sounds to more groovy numbers with funky and buttery vocals. The production is lo-fi and loveably raw, with plenty of these able to make you cry as much as make you dance.

Review: Arp Frique & The Perpetual Singers come together for this most personal gospel funk album which was inspired by the birth of Frique's daughter, Jesamy. It finds the Amsterdam-based multi-instrumentalist mixing up organic funk with obscure synths, bubbly basslines that are always on the move with swirling guitars that add the colour and all make for an unusual and interesting mix of P-funk and gospel-disco. There are plenty of universal messages throughout which all emphasise the need for unconditional love while legendary vocalists like Dennis Bovell, Muriel Blijd, Mariseya, Brandon Delagraentiss and Rocq-E Harrell contribute to the powerful sound. Delagraentiss's choir, The Gospel Experience, also do their bit by adding big, rich, heartfelt vocals. It's quite the listen.

Review: Released in 1977 Isis Voyage was, in part, a product of jazz's identity crisis. Funk and rock had pilfered almost all its younger listeners and bold moves needed to be made. Miles Davis did it with Bitches Brew, Herbie Hancock did it with Headhunters and Stanton Davis and his Ghetto Mysticism troupe did it with this. Now re-explored through a series of alternative recordings and mixes, the frenetic funky spirit remains at the very core of this work. Review: Ernie Hawks is the occasional artistic alias of virtuoso flautist and trombonist Erno Haukkala, a Helsinki-based musician best known for his membership of long-serving Finnish funk combo the Soul Investigators. Fittingly, his debut solo album was produced in cahoots with the long-running band. Throughout, his band-mates provide brilliant backing for his languid trombone solos, jaunty flute lines and - on rare occasions - wild harmonica playing. It's a very enjoyable and impressive set, all told, with Haukkala's compositions variously drawing influence from classic soul, Cymande, Ennio Morricone's "Spaghetti Western" soundtracks and the higher quality end of the library music spectrum. Naturally, it's all brilliantly played and produced, with an emphasis on gentle mood enhancement.

The guitars are fuzzy and wet, the percussion dusty and abrasive, the horns mystical, and the organs eerie. Yes, the perfect concoction for the right kind of cocktail, served to you on a platter and across four sides of wax. Recommended.

Review: Two albums deep, Karl Hector's troupe continue to join the dots between territories, decades and genres with hypnotic aplomb. A frenzy of Middle Eastern arrangements, densely weaved psychedelic motifs and super-tight instrumentation, each track spins a gorgeous hazy yarn. From the sunset serenade "Spirit Of Gine" to the fuzzier, off-kilter freneticism of "Transition T" via the overlapping melodies and yearning flutes of "Samai Thaqil" and the proggier, guitar-led "Nibunga", Unstraight Ahead carves a very clear path deep into the most unique, timeless pastures.

Review: The beautiful South Pacific sea is the overriding theme for this cult, hard to find album from Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki and Tatsuro Yamashita. It is a perfect fusion of early electronics and exotic sounds that transport you to the ocean in question in an instant. Standout cut 'Cosmic Surfing', was later included on the debut album from YMO, Yellow Magic Orchestra, appears for the first time on this album. This is a long awaited reissue from Light in the Attic and as ever with this are, it has been mastered beautifully, presented perfectly on a fitting clear blue vinyl and even includes a poster.

Review: In 1979, a year after he co-founded Yellow Magic Orchestra, Haruomi Hosono joined forces with acoustic guitarist Takahiko Ishikawa and keyboardist Masataka Matsutoya to record "The Aegean Sea", a gloriously sunny set of jazz-fusion, disco and jazz-funk cuts shot through with Mediterranean musical influences. It's the kind of thing that would now be considered "Balearic", so it's little surprise to see the set getting a European reissue for the very first time. There's much to admire throughout, from the funk-fuelled dancefloor cheeriness of "Reggae Aegean Woman" and Bob James/Jimmy Smith-influenced bliss of "Image", to the sun-baked gorgeousness of "Day Break" and thrillingly jaunty "Atlantis".

Review: The first release on Neon Finger found Dutch veteran DJ Overdose turning out a surprising blend of boogie on the Techno Hop LP, but for the second installment on the Spanish label the remit proves to be wide as Inkswel and lesser known The Jungle Sessions join forces for Secret River. This meeting of minds, recorded on a raft of vintage electro-funk equipment, culminates in a perfect slab of sweet, low slung grooves for every boogie enthusiast to engage with. Review: You'd be forgiven for not knowing who Daniel Grau is. For starters, his 1970s amd early '80s productions - a sun-kissed blend of fusion jazz, bossa-nova, simmering soul and cosmic disco - were only ever released in Venezuela. This surprise retrospective, put together by Jazzanova and Trujillo, offers an excellent introduction to his warm, immersive and summery sound. This vinyl version comprises 14 of his most dancefloor-friendly compositions, including such dancefloor dynamite as cosmic disco chugger "Disco Fantasy", the hard disco-funk of "Skylab" and the deliciously stargazing "Tren Del Espacio". Intriguingly, the collection also includes a brand new cut, "To Night", which is Grau's first recording in over 30 years.

Review: Is there a more genuinely eclectic producer than Kalbata operating right now? We certainly can't think of one. Over the last decade and a half he's turned his hand to everything from dub, techno, dubstep and electro to Balearic beats, downtempo grooves and inspired musical fusions that simply cannot be categorized. His latest excursion - made in cahoots with five-piece Israeli band Tigris -falls into the latter category, offering up a brilliant blend of African and Caribbean rhythms, Turkish psych-funk organ solos, off-kilter electronics, wavy ambient chords and glistening guitars. It's hard to accurately describe but brilliantly produced and hugely entertaining. Don't sleep on this one!
