Scorpio Man Theme (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: TR 710. Rel: 04 Jun 18
  1. Scorpio Man Theme (3:58)
  2. Journey To The Bottom (4:28)
Review: Giving Nicole a rare night off, inimitable troupe The Soul Investigators team up with killer flautist Ernie Hawks for two impeccable instrumentals. "Scorpio Man Theme" is all slinky 70s cinematica with a wry nod towards Lalo Schifrin while "Journey To The Bottom" adopts a more languid perspective with slower beats, a smouldering groove and a flute line that takes us right down to the bottom of our souls and right back up again. Beautiful.

  1. Fool For Love, No More (3:08)
  2. You Can Make It If You Try (2:58)
Review: Never released before, unearthed on old reels, there's a serious story behind this 45"... James Reese traversed the label circuit throughout the late 60s and early 70s on a bid to sell his songs but was told that his jazz and soul fusion was "too far ahead of its time". As a result he remained largely unsigned and unreleased. Criminal: both "Fool For Love No More" and "You Can Make It If You Try" are arranged with detail and combine the minor jazz chords create a really strong emotive feel that elevate them from standard paint-by-numbers soul records of the time. Powerful, poignant and ultimately timeless.

  1. Run Around (4:50)
  2. Run Around (Sparse mix) (4:48)
Review: Having released on classic powerhouses such as Capitol and Atlantic, as well as other lesser known but equally coveted soul labels, we can safely say that Wilson John Turbinton aka Willie Tee is up there with the greats. The multi-talented keyboardist and vocalist released an astounding volume of music before his death back in 2007, and not all of it easy to come by these days. So, we're pleased to see "Run Around" previously unissued and now on 7" for Super Disco Edits because it's a funky and timeless soul ballad with a warm twist and a touch of sexiness for the dance. The 'Sparse' mix on the flip is perhaps less seductive but Turbington lays out more space for his own vocal charm on this version. Excellent.

  1. Holding On (3:39)
  2. Dimona (Spiritual Capital Of The World) (3:38)
Review: Chop-walloping funk soul: AOTN bossman Fryer has allegedly spent the past 15 years trying to secure this '70s rarity. Silky, youthful and compounded with an insatiable groove, it's dangerously close to Jackson 5's best output and no one would blame you if you thought it actually was. Flip for "Dimona", a slower burner that swoons and shows the band's more mature side. This is the first time either side has seen a 45... You know what to do.

  1. I Found It All In You
  2. We Got A Thing (Going On)
Review: Atlanta soul duo The Trey J's were active on the live circuit for over 20 years, however they only ever release one 45 on Tee Gem Records. Now, thanks to Soul Junction, it's been realised and given the lease of live it truly deserves. "I Found It All In You" is a rocket-fuelled funk jam with big horns, belly-driven vocals and a chorus you simply can't not sing along to. Meanwhile on the B, "We Got A Thing (Going On)" is a much slower, more heartfelt composition that echoes with Otis level gravitas. Forty four years old and still resonating with power, this is one release you can't go without.

Review: YES! Any self respecting music fan will no doubt already have fully acquainted themselves with Black Messiah, the long promised new album from soul artist D'Angelo and know that it already stands as one of the long players of the year if not the decade! The real fans have probably been waiting for the vinyl release and it's great to see the correct decision has been made to grant Black Messiah a double LP pressing. Everyone no doubt has their favourites on Black Messiah but it's great to have cuts like "Sugah Daddy" on wax, that one is perfect for the house party situations.

Review: Since 2003, the Luxury Soul Weekender crew has run popular soul events in the impressive surroundings of Blackpool's Hilton Hotel. To tie in with this year's edition, Expansion Records has asked resident DJ Ralph Tee to compile this luscious, three-disc exploration of soulful music past and present. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the smooth, '80s soul influenced vibes of Ryle's "Two Way Love Affair", the rubbery modern boogie of Faye B's "Moving On", and smooth soulful house of Phil Asher's classic remix of Da Lata, to the revivalist disco strut of Kiki Kyte, slick R&B of Kashif, and the cinematic production of Ashley Scott's heart-felt "Words".
