Review: Fast-fingered mash-up merchant and lauded scalpel fiend DJ Soopasoul can usually be relied upon to bring the goods. In fact, we've yet to hear an edition of his "Soopastole Edits" series that doesn't include the kind of sure-fire, party-starting fare guaranteed to get any DJ out of a dancefloor hole of their own making. Should you still doubt the validity of this statement, we suggest you check this timely reissue of the series' second volume, which has been going for serious bucks online. On side A you'll find a suitably punchy, funky and chunky revision of Kool & The Gang's Gene Redd produced 1970 jam "Give It Up" - the original source of one of hip-hops most familiar breakbeats - with a tight, club-ready revision of Aretha Franklin classic "Rock Steady" on the flip.

Subtly resculpting funk standards and forgotten classics with full emphasis on the breaks they blessed us with, every single "45 has been a dancefloor riot... Not least this jam hot take on "Give It Up" and "Rock Steady". The former is full focus on the tight horn Q&A and those classic jazzy swoons on the chorus while the latter is all about Aretha's gutsy vocals and that killer breakbeat. Only 250 copies pressed... Review: Jalepeno Records regular DJ Soopasoul launched his amusingly titled Soopastole Edits series at the tail end of 2016, serving up a tasty seven-inch single that boasted rock solid re-rubs of a couple of party-starting classics. He's at it again on this follow-up. On the A-side, he takes his rusty scalpel to Kool & The Gang's meandering, 1970 instrumental cut "Give It Up", emphasizing the original's killer break and snaking saxophone lines. On the flip he takes a similar approach to reworking Aretha Franklin's peerless "Rock Steady", subtly tightening up the groove whilst emphasizing the bumping nature of the original beats.

Review: "One Step Ahead" by American soul singer Aretha Franklin was released by Columbia Records in 1965. The A-side of the single reached the Rhythm & Blues singles chart of the time and ranked at #18. On the flip, "I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face" was taken from her 1964 album entitled Runnin' Out Of Fools. The single was released two years before Aretha achieved stardom when she joined Atlantic Records. The A side cut was not included on any of her Columbia studio albums and remains one of her rarest releases. The song has risen in familiarity due to its use in recent films, such as the music documentary Muscle Shoals and in the Academy Award winning drama Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins.

Review: Over the past few years, American producer Amerigo Gazaway has delivered some of the most inspired mash ups and bootleg remixes around, including a number that breathe new life into recordings by genuine soul and hip-hop greats. He's at it again here, crafting two killer cuts featuring the late, great Aretha Franklin. He first offers up a head-nodding take on 'Young, Gifted and Black' that cleverly combines his own beats, extended raps from Tallib Kewli and Mos Def as Black Star, and snippets of Aretha at her powerful best. Flip the disc for 'Chain of Fools', a stomping fusion of hip-hop and Detroit soul which sees him flit between Gucci Mane raps and more Aretha goodness.

Review: Act of Sedition specializes in the most rarely seen of formats, the double seven-inch single. This is the label's third such release in a row and, like its predecessors, features fresh re-edits and re-fixes of classic funk jams. Dutch crew RocknRolla Soundsystem step up first, serving up a rolling, bass-heavy spruce-up of Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools" that's a little more 4-4 in feel than the Queen of Soul's original. SanFran Disko brilliantly rearranges the same artist's sweet 1983 boogie jam "Get It Right" - emphasizing the slap-bass, synths and bustling beats - before Frank Agrario gets to work on Marty Moore's punchy, disco era funk workout "Radiation Funk" with excellent results. Finally, Bully Boy provides a killer peak-time version of Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music".
