Review: Don't be fooled by the name Clearlight and an EP title like "The Understandable"; the sounds on this Foundation Audio EP (and everything the Belgian has been releasing for the last five or so years) are never clear or understandable. Trippy, alien and disarming, his sense of abstract funk reaches new levels on this new three-tracker. "Stomp Dub" takes the lead; a big old swampy number with heartbeat bass and deep ripples of harmonics it sets us up for the title track. Paranoid, tense, peppered in psychedelic flourishes and unhurried, it's the type of record you can spend years listening to and never quite understand all its mysteries. "Chasm" meanwhile closes on the most haunted note with woozy hang drums, strange squiggles and outer spacious cat mewls. Clearly brilliant.
