Respect (12")
Cat: 054645 706612. Rel: 21 Aug 20
  1. Al Campbell & Trinity - "Respect" (5:50)
  2. Trinity - "Vampire" (4:06)
  3. Trinity - "Vampire" (version) (4:01)
Review: Al Campbell and Trinity's "Respect" is now available on 12" for the first time thanks Greensleeves. Campbell provides the vocal work, which is aloof and detached on "respect", with dreamy trumpets somewhere off in the distance as the rhythm section rolls on with real warmth. Trinity's production is fully on point throughout. The flip is more direct, with heavier beats and more reverb underlining the crisp Al Campbell, and it also features an exclusive dub mix of the same tune that is scorching hot and carries serious weight.

  2. Ode To Joy (Babylon Can't Control I) (Ojah remix dub) (5:02)
  3. Ode To Joy (Babylon Can't Control I) (Ruv Bytes mix) (5:02)
  4. Ode To Joy (instrumental - Ojah mix) (5:01)
Review: Alchemy Dubs hits fantastic number five with new versions of this real reggae anthem. "Ode To Joy (Babylon Can't Control I)" by Cornell Campbell and Soothsayers first appeared on "Nothing Can Stop Us" back in 2013 on Strut and now gets remixed and re-dubbed by Ojah and Ruv Bytes. Breezy, sweet rolling grooves with jangling pianos and warm hearted vocal deliveries are all tethered to planet earth by some brilliantly fat bass.

Never Gonna Give Up
Cat: HRV 122. Rel: 08 Sep 20
  1. Cornell Campbell - "Never Gonna Give Up" (2:56)
  2. Threee Dot - "Gonna Dub Up" (3:41)
Review: This pearler from Cornell Campbell has never before been released. It features heavy production from Charles Reid AKA the UK Duke Reid in Jamaica but somehow never made it to the pressing factory and now gets a proper treatment from Horus Records who have restored it direct from the original master tapes. 'Never Gonna Give Up' is a super sweet and soulful tune with soaring vocals from Campbell. They're pained and impassioned and heartfelt, and the flip side 'Gonna Dub Up' is clean and crisp, with upbeat kicks and noodling keys.

Smoking The Highest
Cat: MBX 147. Rel: 18 Mar 20
  1. Ric Carbi & Dohlance - "Smoking The Highest" (3:44)
  2. Salute - "Smoking Riddim" (4:21)
Review: This is a classic riddim from the hard working folk at Room In The Sky with a new vocal on top, available for the first time on vinyl. Produced by Lewis M, lead tune 'Smoking The Highest' teases and toys with you until it eventually drops into a big, happy, horn lead groove. The vocals are clean and crisp on top, paying love and respect to the smoke as the drums wiggle and horns continue to reach for the skies. Salute takes care of the remix on the flip and ups the ante, with fat bottomed bass and a more noodling lead all vying for your attention.

Ready Or Not
Cat: TUF 183. Rel: 25 Jan 21
  1. Ready Or Not (3:43)
  2. Ready Or Not (dub) (3:49)
Review: This is some seriously weighty roots from Cassey Man via Tuff Scout. The late Cassey Man was part of Sugar Minott's Youth Promotion crew and this is the next great cut to Reality Souljah's 'My Eyes Can See' which was produced at Rolling Lion studio by Daniel Boyle. It's a full flavour tune with plenty of big acoustic riffs and deep cut drums. The vocal delivery is stylish as hell and mad horns are all melted into the mix for extra spice. A chunky dub completes this fine 7" on the reverse.

Must Go Down
Cat: SPIS 2000. Rel: 25 Jan 21
  1. Harry Chapman - "Must Go Down" (feat Ragman Poyser) (4:08)
  2. Swade - "Show Your Love" (3:53)
Review: Zimbabwe-born British producer Paul Hussey put out this tune to very little fanfare 30 years ago. It was only when it got a natty video and put on YouTube in 2000 that it become something of a much sought after gem that often fetched upwards of L100 on eBay. It's well deserving of the long overdue attention as it has perfectly balanced electric guitar riffs and UK stepper crossover riddims. Chapmans voice takes the tune ever upwards and the Ragnam Poyser deejay section lay down some solid beats to drive it home.

You I Love
  1. Johnny Clarke - "You I Love" (3:17)
  2. Ring Craft Posse - "You I Love" (version) (2:51)
Review: Mister Tipsy's next dub diamond is an old treasure from Johnny Clarke, who put out "You I Love" in 1986 at the height of the roots and reggae and dub crossover. The rhythm is by Tyrone Evans from his tune "How Sweet It Is" and here gets repacked with fresh words from Clarke. It's a breezy, romantic tune with claps you soon went on to hear in early house music. The flip is a super deep cut jam, with cavernous and pillow bass and endless echo to die for. Add in the loopy lead which melts to nothing over and over again and you have a real classic.

Wah Fi We (7")
Cat: MT 002. Rel: 16 Jun 20
  1. Wah Fi We (3:24)
  2. Wah Fi We (Rough mix) (3:24)
Review: Jamaican label Mister Tipsy have dug out two previously unreleased gems from Culture, the roots reggae group founded in 1976. They were recorded in the mid eighties with JA producer Blackbeard and roll nice and deep. "Wah Fi We" has pixelated chords that take you straight back to the era over meandering bass and drums. Acoustic guitar riffs and ticking hi hats all flesh out the groove, while the flip side is a rough version that sounds even more lived in and frayed and authentic.

  1. Junior Roy - "Please Tell Me" (3:33)
  2. King Kong - "Time Is Changing" (4:04)
  3. Claire Angel - "Watch Your Company" (3:44)
  4. Brick Wall Dub (Mellow Vibes mix) (4:00)
Review: I Love Sound prove it again with this four track 12" of goodness. Junior Roy's "Please Tell Me" offers a digital dub down low, with fresh, bright chords over the top and some complex vocal work that is diynamic and direct yet stuffed with realness. The version from King Kong - "Time Is Changing" - is laden with more effects but still brings plenty of crisp contemporary vibes. Claire Angel then takes the same production but serve sup her own vocal, with crystal clear soul and impassioned delivery making it an even more modern sounding gem, then a subtly tweaked mellow vibes mix focusses purely on the dub.

What About Your Soul
  1. Keith & Tex - "What About Your Soul" (4:05)
  2. Chakatack - "What About Your Dub" (4:06)
Review: Keith & Tex are best known for their "Stop That Train" fame, but now come good with a hot new tune filled with OG roots goodness. The excellent Soul Of Africa act as backing and to make this a lushly orchestrated tune with lazy lead trumpets and a bubbly bassline. Vocals muse on class, the divide between rich and poor and plenty more socially and politically sensitive subjects that have resonated for many years. On the flip, it's a trip into spaced out dub and liquid synth puddles with so much echo you will end up not knowing which way is left and which is right.
