Defend Your Planet
  1. The Advent & Zein Ferreira - "Defend Your Planet" (4:41)
  2. Assembler Code - "Line Of Sight" (5:19)
  3. Carl Finlow - "Syncopated Automated" (6:57)
  4. Versalife - "SH09" (6:02)
Review: This is a special sampler 12" taken from the Various Artists compilation Defend Your Planet that Avoidant Records put out. It features a heavyweight crew of electro mainstays, first of which are The Advent & Zein Ferreira. Their 'Defend Your Plane' is a turbo powered cosmic assault with skewed synths and high speed drums. Assembler Code's 'Line Of Sight' doesn't let up, powering on through sheet metal snares and juddering drum programming and then man like Carl Finlow layers in prickly melodies, dark sci-fi energy and booming bass. Analogue master Versalife shits things down with the shadowy 'SH09.'

Review: The mysterious C-Lektro continues to run anonymously amok with their crisp, authentic electro designs. As always in this white label series there's no info or track titles, just ice cold breakbeats, stark, emotional musicality and vibes across the spectrum; those in need of a deep space trip and layers of elements to get lost in head for the opening 'Track 1', those looking for more of a body high jump on the thick switchy beats of 'Track 4', those in need of turning inside out and hurling around the room go direct to the head-turning rudeness of 'Track 6'. Raw.

  1. Special Friend (feat Play Paul) (4:23)
  2. Rhythm 55 (4:43)
  3. Jean-Michel (4:26)
  4. Space Jowblob (3:46)
Review: Fresh from a debut EP on My Robot Friend that featured collaborations with Chicks On Speed, Captain Mustache pitches up on Bordello A Parigi for the very first time. It's a great collection of tracks all told, with Play Paul collaboration "Special Friend" in particular offering a pitch-perfect blend of body-popping electro beats, thrusting analogue bass and Mascara-clad, wave-style lead vocals. "Rhythm 55" is a brilliant blend of spacey lead lines, squelchy bass and relaxed electro beats, while "Jean-Michel" doffs a cap to the great Mr Jarre via bold synthesizer melodies, spacey chords and bustling beats. Cheery closing cut "Space Jowblob", a wonderfully lo-fi affair full of 8-bit melodies and druggy bass, is also top-notch.

  3. Saft Und Wasser (O Wells mix) (4:19)
  4. X2 (feat Jonny5 & Badboyblondey - DJ Swagger mix) (3:42)
Review: After guesting on such labels as E-Beamz, Natural Sciences and Who's Susan, DJ Swagger established the Goddess Music imprint late last year. Fittingly, the label's first vinyl missive features the man himself in cahoots with German mic man Caramelo. The latter delivers a weary-sounding rap over "Saft Und Wasser", a warm and spacey electro cut that's as emotive as it is energetic. DnAonDnA brilliantly re-imagine the track as a hazy chunk of spaced-out electronic dub, before sometime Chiwax, Die Orakel and Natural Sciences artist Orson Wells turns it into a deep and crunchy IDM number. There's a fine bonus too in the shape of DJ Swagger's remix of "X2", a high-octane ghetto-tech/electro number featuring a seriously squelchy bassline and vocal contributions from Jonny5 and Badboyblondey.

  3. Industrialism (original mix) (5:53)
  4. Industrialism (Koehler's Six Sided Storm mix) (7:50)
Review: Having previously appeared on Transcendent back in 2014, Caron returns on Russian label Mosaique with a fearsome slice of distorted techno futurism for the darkest of dances. "Liquid" is a lithe and limber workout full of grubby percussion and gutter-dwelling synth lines that makes for the perfect lead track on the record, while "Industrialism" sits in stark contrast with its airy, metallic electro machinations hitting a strangely breezy note. Kind Human Being takes "Liquid" to task with an atmospheric remix that plays on Kraftwerkian themes to create a robotic but funky slice of electronic unease, and then Koehler whips "Industrialism" up into a rowdy frenzy of mean-tempered leads and broken rhythms.

  3. Enada Mello (5:08)
  4. Purplewave (Silicon Scally remix) (7:07)
  5. Purplewave (No Moon remix) (6:28)
Review: We're not quite sure what "Purplewave" is, though by the sounds of this EP from electro and techno veteran Rico Casazza it's something we like. The title track, which kicks of the EP in style, is a curious but inspired blend of electro rhythms played on live drums, 1980s alt-rock guitar solos, druggy Italo-disco/new wave style arpeggio bass and alien-sounding electronic melodies. On side B it gets the remix treatment, with Silicon Scally (AKA British electro stalwart Carl Finlow) re-inventing it as a shimmering slice of deep space electro and No Moon offering up a trippy, chugging and dreamy version for late nights and early mornings. Elsewhere on the EP, Casazza delves in to dark electro waters on "Rainmaker" and adds acid to his guitar-flecked template on "Enada Mello".

Review: Florin Buechel aka Contra Communem Opinionem first appeared on our radar a few years back with some killer EPs on Swiss electro imprint Lux Rec - in particular the collaboration with label boss Daniele Cosmo as Savage Grounds in 2016. Here he presents new Berlin label Omega Men's third installment, serving up yet more gritty analogue machine exploits on "The Transformation Problem". Hear that legendary Roland silver box hard at work throughout the four-tracker: we're loving the soaring resonance and glide of frantic opener "Dead Labor", the dystopian noir vibe of electro jam "Necessary Labor" and our pick of the bunch that is neon-lit exhilarator "Living Labor". 3. Marvin's Track (5:24)

Review: Just when you thought the pandemic couldn't get more complicated, along comes Saverio Celestri with a whole new variant. Welcome 'Forest Virus', even more contagious and infectious than Corona but, thankfully, about 10,000,000 times more enjoyable. Four tracks deep, each one promises total respite and escapism from the current strange reality; 'Forest Virus' doffs its cap to Detroit with its synth simplicity and relentless drive, 'Bollywood' takes us to the starts with maximal effect; stomping kicks, swampy pads and Orbital-style waves of synths, 'Marvin's Track' is an emotional bulldozer that gets more and more intense as more instruments are introduced mid-way before 'Celestial Atmosphere' closes with a sense of church-like scale and sobriety while remaining raw and about as clean as the discarded facemasks you see in many gutters right now.

Review: On the A1 Chekov follows up their moves on Peach Discs and Timedance with a proper peak timer, they've been described by Ben UFO as 'king of the build up' and that's evident on this one. At the A2 London's Doppelate makes their Cong Burn debut with an elegant tech-house roller. Fresh from Russia's underground is Camin, on this, his debut 12" release he drops a useful tool which squeezes between electro and techno. Cong Burn founder Howes closes the B side with some warm hypnosis that could have landed in the golden era of Workshop.

  3. Roche - "One For Cherushii" (8:01)
  4. David Last - "All That's Left" (feat Lavender - dance mix) (5:51)
Review: Besides its inimitable name, Hobo Camp has had a pretty unbeatable first few years in the game, switching up the electro sound with shades of loopy house and techno. These guys have released over two dozen EPs since 2016, and are showing no signs of stopping if this new collaborative release is anything to by! Pumping the vibes through with utter ease, Run The Length Of Your Wilderness is a daring, rip-roaring amalgamation of tech-driven sounds that span just about every quality corner of the game. "The Industrial City", from Cherushii, moans and weeps with a fragile acid bassline over broken percussion beats, while Nackt's "Next" floats at a house tempo, driven forwards by a winding bass from the darkest corners of the 4/4 game. On the flip, Roche's "One For Cherushii" bigs up his counterpart with a deep, aqueous house chugger, and David Last's "All That's Left" drops a clean, sparkly prog house groover for the lovers.

  3. Somewhere In Your Mind (5:15)

Review: Cignol's debut on Nocta Numerica is a super one that explores plenty of interplanetary electro vibes. 'Overview' launches the trip with tight drum programming and astral pads that immediately make a sci-fi mood. 'Set to Sync' pairs a roaming lead synth with crisp arps that cast your mind free before 'Somewhere In Your Mind' brings shimmering chords and popping kick drums and hits to the fore. This is smooth Drexcyian electro remained in the combos rather than the ocean and closer 'Memory Minor' is the most pensive of the lot, but still has a nimble bassline powering it along.

Review: Those with a deep knowledge of electro and techno will be salivating at the prospect of More Than A Machine: Part 1, an EP that boasts cuts from such legends of the scene as Sterac Electronics, The Advent and Christian Smith. All deliver the goods, of course, as does rising star Client 03, whose EP-opening 'Regression Container' brilliantly flips between shimmering, deep space ambient and warming, tactile electro dreaminess. Those looking for more rugged and robust club fare should check Sterac Electronics 'Reinstated', with its' out-there lead lines and machine-gun bass, and the sleazy, up-tempo futurism of the Adveny and Zein Ferreira's 'Seven'. Christian Smith's deep, Kraftwerk-influenced 'Pressure Drop' rounds off a predictably strong EP.

Blurt Reject

  1. Blurt (6:29)

Review: Watch yer bassbins, Club Winston is back with another loud n' lairy bit of wub for his wickedly named UKGEORGE label. This is club pressure that's as serious as it is silly, boiling garage and rave tropes down for maximum efficiency and celebrating the limitless joy of a wobbly bassline. "Blurt" keeps things raw and direct, stomping at a nifty tempo and teasing the tension and release with the simplest of ingredients. "Reject" on the flip has a sweeter vibe, using little touches of melody to create a mellower mood but not at the expense of the all-important low end.

Review: Sound-tracking the change of the seasons with emotional aplomb, French cold wave artist Cold Colors returns with more of his glacial magic. Each cut drawing deep from that synthwave, new beat, electro and new romantic, our journey begins with 'Memories On A Screen'. A nod to Wendy Carlos and those big screen 80s dreams, it sets the tone for more yearning yarns... 'Mom Ame Perdue' tugs on the heart with weeping synths and an almost trance-like bedrock, 'After Dark' is a much more tense, brooding affair with full emphasis on the bass while 'Eleven' closes on the dreamiest note of the tale. fais de beaux reves

Review: Having built its name on various artist releases featuring old and new artists, Contort Yourself is branching out with a new series that focuses on one contemporary act per release. In this instance it's Coletivo Vandalismo getting some much-deserved attention. The Portuguese industrial punk outfit have a visceral sound that favours noise and distortion, but most importantly they know how to wield these sonic tools for maximum impact. The snarl of the synths and the crunch of the drums on "Hostages Of Society" could easily be too much in the wrong hands, but here the errant tones find their own space in the mix, making the impact of the track all the more on-point.

Review: Jorge Caiado certainly keeps busy. When not running the Carpet & Snares (and its affiliated shop), the Groovement label or doing A&R for Chez Damier's long running Inner Balance Music imprint, he's releasing some brilliant music - as heard on this year's Choice EP - one of our favourite records of this year. He now presents some new deep space transmissions via his Lisbon HQ, under new alias Conversion here and inaugurating the eponymous imprint. Reflective electro, Motor City techno and beatless trips are explored, dedicated to sonic excursions away from his housier roots.

The label is run by an artist of the same name who is also known as Jorge Caiado, who runs the Carpet & Snares label and shop, as well as doing A&R for Chez Damier's cult Inner Balance Music. It's been two years since he serve up the first release but the wait was well worth it - these are five more tracks of serene and cinematic electro. There is sparse, ambient laced dreaming material, more driving and punchy dance floor tackle and futuristic soul searching of the highest order.

Review: Back in May, the first multi-artist missive from the freshly launched Hearse label sold out in no time at all. We have a feeling that this similarly formatted follow-up will go the same way. '90s survivor Cosmic Force kicks things off in style via the raw, angular riffs, spacey melodies, vocoder vocals and punchy electro rhythms of "Suckers Divide", before Manasyt takes us into industrial electro territory on the fuzzy and breathless "Sister Ping". Over on side B, Secret State ups the tempo on the undeniably Drexciyan "Dominant Narrative", while Brassica peppers a high-octane rhythm track with dystopian noises and malfunctioning computer electronics on killer closing cut "0898666420".

Nothing Matters When We Are Dancing Vol 10: Cosmic Hole
  1. CPI - "Mount Anal" (8:14)
  2. Juan Ramos - "Skincrawler" (6:05)
  3. Kris Baha - "Paralleled" (6:53)
  4. Bezier - "Starpoint" (7:56)
Review: Notorious Discodromo helmed session CockTail D'Amore celebrate their 10th birthday with a compilation that highlights many different aspects of the much loved and musically adventurous Berlin party. The Cosmic Hole is the corner of the club that champions slower, freakier sounds, and the corresponding 12" kicks off in style with the throbbing acid chug of "Mount Anal" by CPI. Juan Ramos brings something of a nightmarish industrial clamour to "Skincrawler", while Kris Baha gets bombastic on the full-fat "Paralleled". Bezier completes the package with "Starpoint", a mystical affair shaped out by yearning strings and subtle rhythms.

Jump Over Barrels

  2. Jump Over Barrels (1981 demo) (3:32)
  3. Jump Over Barrels (Charles Manier remix) (3:33)
  4. Jump Over Barrels (early rehearsal version) (3:07)
Review: Post-punk aficionados may already by familiar with Crash Course In Science, a Philadelphia-based band who released two acclaimed singles between 1979 and '81, before going their separate ways. Here, one of the band's previously unheard 1981 demos gets mixed and released for the first time. "Jump Over Barrels" is a song about overcoming adversity, and in newly mixed form sounds like a lost post-punk classic. It's accompanied by a couple of demos - their initial 1981 recording, and an earlier, deliciously skeletal and heavy rehearsal version - and a fresh remix from Tadd Mullinix under his now familiar Charles Manier alias. The Ann Arbor-based producer does a good job of toughening up the track for modern dancefloors, whilst retaining the free-spirited essence of Crash Course In Science's original.

  2. Die Welt (6:47)
  3. Slaves Of War (5:17)
  4. Jus Tee Naa (5:19)
Review: Credit 00 is back on the cult Pinkman label with more of his twisted electro slash new beat slash odd-ball club joints. 'New Tech Swing' is slow and tests you as it churns over, with prickly hits and slithering electro bass, while 'Die Welt' brings a more dark vibe that is haunting and star-gazing. 'Slaves Of War' is another track focussed don atmosphere with is slow, sludgy beats and dehumanised vocals. 'Jus Tee Naa' is a drunken rhythm with kicks and bass and acid twitches all piled up on top of one another and threatening to collapse at any time.

  6. Scratchapella (2:31)
Review: Credit 00 is in full-on electro mode here, offering up some seriously retro-futurist vibes with a little help from remixer Egyptian Lover. The 1980s electro original handles "Super Scratch", a formidably bass-heavy affair that in its original form peppers a retro-futurist groove with scratch samples, freestyle-esque melodies and some killer vocal samples that doff an oversized cap to early 1980s electro. Egyptian Lover naturally plays on the '80s feel of the track, adding extra-spacey synths, especially squelchy bass and - on the "remix" and "acapella" versions - his own distinctive rapped and talkbox-tweaked vocals. Also worth a listen is bonus cut "Computer Beat", which sounds like Kraftwerk having a sonic fist-fight with Phuture.
