Badu Rock Riddim
Review: Heat Rock has previously been home to plenty of superb King Most flips but here he returns to KM after the head-turning inaugural release, this second outing is another super fun blend of classic beats and vocals. Sunny R&B and neo soul vocals, natty guitar riffs that bring the funk and a fat, rolling dub sound on the flip, making for two fine collisions of different worlds.

Every DJ (part 1)
Every DJ (part 2)
Review: Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez is still undergoing a thorough reissuing-reassessment of his finest breaks clasts courtesy of Kay Dee, who've here trowelled deep into his vault for a formerly unreleased cut threading the needle between hip-hop breaks and dancehall grit. 'Every DJ' lands back on 7", flipping a vocal sample from Cutty Ranks' 'The Stopper' into a punchy, bass-heavy instrumental built for crossfader work. It's Dope in classic form: tough drums, deep pockets, and just enough swagger to keep things bouncing.

I Saw The Light
Review: Tokyo's ska and rocksteady revivalists Inokasira Rangers turn in yet one of two more new 7"s after a career-length focus on similar rocksteady cover versions, reworking familiar pop giants with signature Hammond heft. One disc flips Oasis's 'Wonderwall' into a slow burning organ-led instrumental with Dunbaresque, well drummed weft, harking Kingston, Manchester or Tokyo depending on the angle of earshot. For those with a Hammond fetish, The B redoes Todd Rungren's 'I Saw The Light', rendering its melody through an especially resonant organ, clicking keypresses galore.

Review: Favorite Records' reggae-minded offshoot Stix has been serving up periodic collections of disco-reggae cover versions for the best part of a decade, most created by a core crew that includes Maggy Tatcher, Soul Sugar (AKA organ maestro Booker Gee) and Mato. They all return for volume six, a collection curated by French digger Charles Maurice, alongside new recruit Mystic Jungle, who kicks things off with a sublime take on Roy Ayers' 'The Memory' with vocalist Roxanne. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, with our favourites including Soul Sugar's reggae/jazz-fusion interpretation of Ramsay Lewis's 'Sun Goddess', Taggy Matcher's hard, dub-wise flip of Cymande gem 'The Message', the same artist's roots style shuffle through Bee Gees' fave 'Stayin' Alive', and Matos' lovers rock inspired cover of Isley Brothers' loved-up classic 'Between The Sheets'.

Waves
Review: Sunday down-toolings with Challenger Deep's Swiss favourite Luss, offering another slow-cooked 12" plumbing the dub genre's deepest trenches. The Challenger Deep operating base is still mysterious to us, and for all we know - and for all we hear - we could easily believe their HQ/packing house could be an underwater station on the abyssal plane. 'Natural Nature' collapses the old Darwinian binary with tube-shot, bubbly deep dubstep sound design and perimetric beats precision. 'Waves' clambers ashore, after a well-rested gangplank walk, to find deeper ricochets and molluscan shapes in the clouds.

Denihilism
Review: Jamie McCue is the man behind the Canadian label Silent Season and his newest concern, Moon Garden is fast becoming just as vital. This fantastic fourth outing comes from Transient Vessels, who McCue describes as "a local artist and good friend of mine." Opener 'Another Day' is a slow-motion motion dubbed-out melon twister that echoes the early Leftfield sound and is detailed with both textured synth leads and more introspective chords. 'Denihilism' is just as slow motion but deeply absorbing with plenty of wide open space for the pads to linger and the drums to churn and hypnotise.

Review: Jamaican singer Michael Rose reunites with Sly & Robbie across 12 tracks recorded in the early 90s, now given a first vinyl pressing via TABOU1. Best known for his work with Black Uhuru during their late 70s to mid-80s run, Rose brings the same clipped phrasing and distinctive tone to productions that favour machine-programmed rhythms and restrained arrangements. 'Coke Is A Joke' and 'Monkey Business' lean into digital textures without overwhelming the vocal while 'Come Home' and 'Car Wars (Ambient)' explore more spacious and effects-driven territory. Sly & Robbie's approach avoids easy throwbacks. There's clarity to the mix with each element dialled in for precision instead of weight. 'Marcus Garvey' and 'African Girl' return to roots motifs but the surrounding production keeps things forward-facing. Rose's delivery remains intact: urgent, measured and instantly recognisable. This is not a legacy act revisiting past formulas but a session shaped by its own internal logic.

Review: Mittoo? Me too! Jackie Mittoo's Reggae Magic (Soul Jazz) assembles essential lathings and rare grooves from 1967 to 1974, a period when his keyboard work shaped reggae's core sound. After leaving seminal Jamaican ska outfit The Skatalites, Mittoo was de facto CCO at Studio One, driving its signature organ-led style that mounted Kingston's rhythms to earlier, more readily identifiable grooves from the popular sphere, such as the post-bossa flurries of Booker T And The MGs and the knee-slapping soul movements of Stax. The tunes you hear here - 'Hot Milk', 'One Step Beyond' and 'Real Rock' - were reused as riddims over a span of decades, reaching artists from Alton Ellis to The Clash, Lily Allen to Rihanna. Further rarities like 'Ghetto Organ' and 'Soul Stew' also appear, presenting a snapshot of Mittoo's can't-go-back impact on Jamaican music.

Review: Originally issued in the late 70s on Trojan, these two dub albums-produced by Linval Thompson and recorded at Channel One-capture the form at its deepest and most elemental. Long overdue for a reissue, both sets are finally brought to CD for the first time, with all twenty tracks remastered and restored to full power. As ever with Thompson, the players are elite: Sly & Robbie anchor the riddims, while the Revolutionaries stretch out into expansive, reverb-soaked territory. Cuts like 'Rock Me In Dub', 'Natty Dread Dub' and 'Fisherman Style' showcase the dense atmospheres and militant low-end that defined Channel One's late 70s sound. There's a raw immediacy to these mixes-stripped of vocals and soaked in space-that still feels bracingly modern. Dub historians and newcomers alike will find plenty to lose themselves in here. A vital document of Jamaican sonic architecture at its peak.

Review: Originally self-released in 1988 from the depths of Australia's experimental underground, Anthony Maher's work remains a cult seismic event-its influence slow-moving but far-reaching. Operating under the name Sheriff Lindo, Maher crafted ten low-slung, echo-soaked tracks that fused the spatial sensibility of Jamaican dub with the raw textures of UK post-punk and industrial electronics. It's a uniquely hybrid vision: murky drum machines, detuned synths and tape-warped FX glide beneath deep, impeccably anchored basslines. Tracks unfold with patience, heavy on atmosphere but always moving with intent. This 2025 repress pays tribute to the late John Blades-producer, label head of Endless Recordings and co-member of The Loop Orchestra-whose DIY ethos helped bring this shapeshifting document to life. Enduringly strange, rugged and rhythmically focused, Ten Dubs is less a time capsule than a long-range signal, still vibrating with undiminished force.

Review: Wayne Smith's 1985 single 'Under Me Sleng Teng' triggered a tectonic seism in the proverbial reggae dub plate, marking the moment dancehall turned digital. Built on a preset from a Casio MT-40 keyboard discovered by Smith and friend Noel Davey, its rigid, synthetic rhythm, later dubbed the 'Sleng Teng' riddim, tore through systems as though no circuit could ever be overblown. Made by Prince Jammy (soon King Jammy), it not only launched Smith's career but cemented Jammy's role as an architectonic of digital dancehall. Now reunited with its crucial dub version, A is reunited with B, regaining its early status as a catalytic and crucial pointer in the digital style, enabled by cheap gear of fine taste.

Review: Jackie Paris of the Sensations formed a vital part of said Jamaican vocal harmony group, who were in turn a vital part of Caribbean island nation's rocksteady and reggae scenes of the 60s. Paris (not to be confused with the American jazz singer of the same name) was in fact frontman, and while his appearances with The Sensations and for his many Duke Reid/Treasure Isle collaborations were indeed sensational, his solo work is oft overlooked. 'Make Me Smile' is the best exception, coming backed on the B by the metallically weighty 'Smile Version', where girding a lackadaisical laxer of an A-side, with its central theme of smily forbearance, lies a merciless trunk of bassweight.

Review: Jamaican vocal legend Ken Boothe teams up with British bassist Jah Wobble for a rich, dub-inflected reimagining of soul and pop classics. This cross-generational collaboration brings warmth and grit to well-worn favourites, with Boothe's honeyed voice rising gracefully above Wobble's cavernous basslines and spiralling effects. Their version of 'Everything I Own' is mournful yet punchy, while 'Ain't No Sunshine' is transformed into a meditative, slow-swaying lament. Elsewhere, 'Just My Imagination' floats through layers of reverb and echo, nodding to the roots of dub while leaning into lush, widescreen textures. Wobble's history in post-punk and experimental music adds weight to the arrangements without ever crowding Boothe's vocal clarity. The result is a tender and atmospheric project that blurs genre boundaries, reconnecting classic songwriting with sound system sonics. A project that feels reverent yet exploratory, it's a testament to both artists' ability to evolve while staying true to their foundations.

Side A features Junior Murvin's hard-edged 'Cool Down The Heat', a tension-filled stepper rich with Murvin's unmistakable falsetto, backed by a thunderous dub from the Jammys All Stars that pushes the rhythm into darker territory. On the flip, Nitty Gritty's original 'Run Down The World' makes a welcome return, its stark, direct delivery now complemented by the long-sought Jamaican-only dub version, finally getting a wider release.

Jam Down Rock: Joe Gibbs Dancehall Dub
Cat: DBCD 167. Rel: 15 Aug 25
Review: Joe Gibbs, one of Jamaica's pre-eminent reggae producers, demonstrates his seamless transition from roots to dancehall on this outstanding dub collection. Capturing the sound that dominated Jamaica between 1980 and 1982, the set features 23 heavy, hypnotic versions crafted at his Kingston studio, driven by the dynamic mixing of Gibbs' collaborator, dub engineer Errol Thompson. Celebrated instrumentalists lay down dark and compelling rhythms, giving fresh depth to popular cuts of the day, many of which have remained obscure for over 40 years. Tracks such as 'Jam Down Rock' encapsulate the era's raw dancehall energy, while dubs of major hits reveal Gibbs' ability to reinvent himself continuously. Essential for aficionados of Jamaican music's transformative early-80s period.

Review: Part 13 in this revered dub Netherlands techno label's limited series delivers another hypnotic slab of minimalism and it's easy to see why SND & RTN are gaining a reputation for masterful atmospheric control. With their ninth EP, they continue refining their deep and textured sound. Side-A opens with 'The Mole', where classic island dub textures meet a fluid minimal groove. The track feels submerged, steady in its pace, letting delay and echo spiral naturally. 'The Vacuum Of Shape' follows with a darker tone as resonant chords unfold in an ominous haze while the rhythm skeleton keeps things subtly in motion. On the second side 'Rhudaur' is the most ambient cut here, beautifully fusing spatial synth work with throbbing low-end presence. Its meditative tone creates a kind of floating tension. 'Noise Factory' closes the EP, echoing Maurizio at his finest but with a distinctly modern polish. Another strong showing from a duo clearly steeped in dub techno tradition.

Skinheads, A Message To You
If I Had Wings
Review: First issued separately in 1969 on Downtown Records and produced by Dandy Livingstone (aka Brother Dan), this 7" recut remerges two much sought-after reggae cuts from the skinhead era. On the A-side is Desmond Riley's 'Skinheads A Message To You', a version of Dandy's own tune later revived in rudeboy form by The Specials, and delivered in Riley's understated yet insistent vocal style. The flip, 'Ain't That Loving You', finds him rework the Jimmy Reed classic into a strut-time early reggae rhythm, pairing raw soul sentiment with JA swing. Little is widely known about Riley beyond his handful of late 60s vocal singles, but his voice - clear, aching, unadorned - stands out among the countless one-shot singers of that time.

Review: Jah Wobble returns with a new dub LP on Dimple Discs - and it's a proper low-end masterclass. A completely solo outing, written, played and arranged by the legendary East London bassist, it's a deep, heady listen steeped in the influence of Lee Perry and King Tubby - all heavy atmospheres, tactile delays and bottomless bass. It's a new release from one of dub's great outliers, with every frequency tuned for sound system clarity. 'Dub In The East' sets the tone with hypnotic simplicity, while 'Tyson Dub Remix' and 'Existential Dub' expand the palette with warped melodica, submerged vocals and Wobble's unmistakable bass lines pulsing through the mix. 'Losing All Sense Of Balance Dub' and 'Tragic Slavic Dub' are deeper still i lurching, meditative and slyly melodic. With sleeve art by Wobble himself and expert mastering by Anthony Chapman, this is a dub LP in the classic mould, but fully in Wobble's voice. A late-period gem from a true innovator i warm, weird and built for full-volume immersion.

Review: Jamar McNaughton aka Jamaican dancehall icon Chronixx lives up to his own name, leaving us with chronic catatonia after we find ourselves all too quickly and easily engrossed in his new single, 'Never Give Up'. A stripped-back, slow-burner rocksteady exclaimer rolled through soft percussion, spaceflight keys and a quietly unshakeable hook, it carries a steadfast message, one that lends associatively well to the guesting productive hand of fellow producer and SAULT mastermind Inflo. And what do we have it: just days before mastering the A, Chronixx laid down a dub version, now also pressed solely on this limited 10". This one offers a different kind of protest compared to the earlier, brasher 'Here Comes The Trouble', one rooted in systems thought, and the long arc of change.

Her rendition of Minnie Riperton's 'Lovin' You' is a smooth, emotional journey, with Tsukishima's glossy vocals building in intensity, pulling the listener into a warm embrace of lovers' reggae. This cover offers a unique yet faithful reimagining of a classic, with the gradual swell in her singing perfectly complementing the track's inherent tenderness. On the B-side, Tsukishima takes on Alicia Keys' 'Empire State of Mind (Pt. 2)' in a ska reggae style, the upbeat rhythm and catchy horns injecting a lively, fresh energy into a song often tied to urban grandeur. A must-have for reggae enthusiasts and those eager to hear beloved songs through a different lens.

Review: Two-tone ska scallywags Bad Manners ruled the chart roost throughout the 1980s, racking up nine Top 40 hits and 111 weeks on the charts, fueled by a vary many memorable TotP appearance. By the late 80s, their chart success faded but they kept busy with Eat The Beat (1988), a collection of rarities and a standalone take on the 1969 Symarip track 'Skinhead Girl.' Later in 1989, Bad Manners offshoot Buster's All Stars released 'Skinhead Girl' with a fresh live ska twist, and this incurrent reissue of that flashpoint now also unveils the never-heard-before 'Skinhead Boy', which debuts in a foldout sleeve with liner notes by Lee Morris. Both songs are rife with nostalgia for a subculture mired in historic complication, and at times it's hard to distinguish whether the object of affection so considered is a real person or a representation of a genre and point in time: "she wore braces and blue jeans... she was mine."

Review: A Hornin' Sounds deep cut from Jackie Paris - not the jazz vocalist, but the Jamaican singer formerly of American harmony group The Sensations - this soulful roots number carries the unmistakable mark of Winston Riley. Paris's voice, rich and grainy, sits confidently over a stripped-back, bass-heavy groove, trenchantly dug by Riley, the Techniques founder who helped steer reggae through and past its rocksteady, early dancehall and roots phases. Known for his tight productions and ear for vocal hooks, Riley brings a crisp, unhurried touch here, letting the weight of the rhythm speak.

Review: Rhoda Dakar, the London-born vocalist best known for fronting 2 Tone trailblazers the Bodysnatchers, returns with a new dub reinterpretation of her 2023 album, a collection that originally celebrated the art of the cover version through a lens of ska and reggae. Here, the songs are stripped to the bones i vocals drifting in and out like overheard conversations, dub FX spreading across the stereo field like rising smoke. It's not her first time engaging with the dub tradition, but it's the most immersive: 'The Man Who Dubbed The World' sets the tone with slow, stoned bass pressure, while tracks like 'Midnight Skank' and 'Dubbin' 'Round' make subtle work of rhythm and space, giving the performances just enough room to ghost their original forms. Dakar calls dub "a mix as performance", and you can hear that philosophy in the way she lets certain lines echo, not just through the delay but into memory i as if she's not just remixing songs, but re-listening to the sessions themselves, hearing what she missed the first time.

I Dub Further (Bass Upon The Wicked)
Review: Hailing from Hamburg, Prince Istari has spent decades refining a sound rooted in dub's heavyweight traditions, but always peppered with a mischievous flair. His latest 7" is the sixth instalment in his Riddim Dub School series i a classroom exercise in rhythm science that never feels academic. 'Mwendoskasi (Hot Drum Spicy Bass)' is the bold, brassy choice here: a strutting stepper laced with lashings of horns and an irresistibly thick bassline, built to test sound system limits. On the flip, 'I Dub Further (Bass Upon The Wicked)' strips things back to an echo chamber of swirling organ licks, percussion fills and foghorn-like brass i deep and dubbed out, but still taut with energy. True to form, Istari keeps things raw and dubwise throughout, balancing classic technique with a slightly cartoonish edge. It's not reinventing the wheel, but that's hardly the point i this is hand-crafted, honest dub from a producer who knows exactly how to wring every drop of power from a groove.

Review: Lyon-based collective High Tone reassemble the core of their early sound with a 12-track collection spanning their first three EPs-Bot Dub Seasons, Low Tone and Bass Temperature-alongside four extra cuts. It's a fierce, analogue-heavy statement of early 2000s electro-dub, moving between militant steppers rhythms and deep psychedelic sprawl. 'Echo-Logik' opens with siren-like urgency, DJ Twelve's scratches slicing through dubbed-out low end. 'Train to Transylvania' leans into horror-sample mysticism, while 'N-1 Station' flirts with hard-tek energy. 'The Orientalist' builds an Eastern modal tension over subby pressure. The title track may be the most subdued moment here, but that's relative-everything carries weight. These early works show High Tone forging a uniquely French dub aesthetic: industrial, expansive and full of dread-laced swing.

McCook, a founding member of both the Skatalites and the Supersonics, had by this point cemented his status as one of Jamaican music's most versatile players, lending his tenor tone to hundreds of sessions. Here, Tubby reworks a batch of Lee-produced riddims to carve space for McCook's mellow, melodic leads, turning each track into a showcase of balance. With a backing bed by The Aggrovators, roots reggae and instrumental improvisation had truly found a rare common ground.

Review: First released in 1995, Outside's second album The Rough And The Smooth marked a major leap for UK big beat and bigger brain Matt Cooper, who at 22 years old wrote, produced, mixed and engineered this second of six eventual LPs for Dorado. Between dub, jungle, hip hop, Latinate rhythms and modal jazz, Cooper played keys and drums, with help from top names like Jhelisa, Imaani, Greg Osby, and Cleveland Watkiss. From the intricate steppers funk of 'Journeyman' parts 1 and 2, through to the Nu Yorican pulse of 'The 29/8 Steps', and the lush violin-driven jungle on 'To Forgive But Not Forget', it's an unforgettable record, with Cooper unperturbed by its recent time out of the public ear (perhaps for sheer faith in his music's longevity).

Rooted in Innes's club-hardened taste for Afro-American dancefloor sounds and Hobbs's immersion in everything from New Orleans soul to roots reggae and calypso, the record draws in longtime allies Bob Birch and Chris Dawkins, whose Hammond and guitar works ha e graced British reggae and rock for years. There's a swampy Kingston-New Orleans fusion to 'Grafter' and 'Bust Up', with nods to Lynn Taitt, The Meters and Fatman Riddim Section throughout, and a glorious free-for-all on 'Iron Fist', where Birch plays straight from instinct.

Review: Jamaican-born, UK-adopted outfit Symarip made ska history in 1969 with a record that would come to define a subculture. Their riotous debut still thumps with all the urgency of the skinhead reggae movement it helped crystallise. The stomping opener needs little introduction, but this reissue offers more than nostalgia: the original singer Roy Ellis returns to the mic, bringing fresh weight to every line. Cuts like 'Phoenix Reggae (Phoenix City)' and 'Skin Flint' retain their punchy swagger, while the extended 12" version of 'Skinhead Moonstomp' seals the package with floor-ready attitude. The record now arrives on Burning Sounds with extensive sleeve notes and a Q&A with Ellis, reaffirming the album's significance. For fans of classic ska and early reggae, this is essential listening that still dances at full throttle.
