Review: Seven years have passed since Burial first stopped us dead in our tracks with this universally acclaimed second album.. Sounding so different, so removed and far away from anything else, it changed the game entirely - and created a whole school of imitators in its wake. Now repressed by Hyperdub, this is a rare opportunity to grab it on fresh wax. Even if you have this on other formats in your collection, the dusty weight and chasmic crackles sound so much better on vinyl.

Review: Originally released on Shelter Records way back in 1993, the Atmosphere EP from US house icon Kerri Chandler remains a great example of the New Jersey producer's sublime touch when it comes to driving instrumental house music. Some 22 years on, this new edition from Shelter demonstrates the qualities of Atmosphere remain undimmed, put simply the four tracks possess a certain energy that is undeniably timeless. If house music is a feeling, then cuts such as "Climax 2" and "Atmosphere 2" prove that emotion is that feeling. A classic 12" that any self respecting house DJ needs in their collection stat!

Review: Space Dimension Controller returns to Clone's Royal Oak series in style with the first of five Correlation releases! It was back in 2010 that the then-emerging Space Dimension Controller first landed on Clone's Royal Oak imprint with Journey To The Core Of The Unknown Sphere; since that landmark release the Belfast born producer's career has taken off with successive EPs on R&S which ultimately led to this year's concept-heavy debut album Welcome To Mikrosector-50. Correlation#1 retains the intergalactic motifs that have become a Space Dimension Controller trademark, however the five tracks here find Hamill focusing on a straighter dancefloor approach akin to his earliest releases. His one concession to conceptual themes manifests itself visually with Hamill producing a series of prints relating to the mood and colour of each track. One print has been randomly inserted into each of the records included in this first pressing.

Review: No-one could accuse the London-based duo Public Service Broadcasting of lacking ambition-after the runaway success of their debut 'Inform - Educate - Entertain', this second album, whilst still utilising their trademark mixture of archive audio recordings, krautrock and post-rock. focuses conceptually on the '60s space race, and summons up a suitably widescreen and emotionally resonant backdrop for these stirring tales of voyages into the unknown. Both playful and respectful, it's a heartfelt record whose experimental elan matches the ground-breaking nature and sense of wonder of the subject matter, with these soundscapes and grooves sounding forceful and engaging even whilst they're figuratively staring at the stars.

  1. Jump!

  3. Intergalactic Jam
  4. Bootsy's Nightmare
Review: Chesus seems to be in a happy place right now. Certainly, there's a confident and outgoing feel about his second outing for 4Lux under the Earl Jeffers alias. All four tracks feel like the product of enjoyable studio sessions, and almost bristle with celebratory release. "Jump", which recalls the disco-inspired bump of early '90s New York house whilst adding sturdier bottom end, leads the way. Following close behind is "Elevation", a carnival-friendly fusion of pounding percussion, snaking synths and booming bass. "Intergalactic Jam" is a warm and rich exercise in stargazing deep house, while the curious "Bootsy's Nightmare" is hard to pin down. Listen carefully, and you can hear influences from UK funky, UKG, kuduro and ultra-deep house.

Review: Like many producers, Martin Hayes has built his career on the twin pursuits of original, sample-heavy house production and floor-friendly re-edits. This 12" sees him reaching for the scalpel once more, delivering a quartet of killer cut-jobs for Brooklyn's mighty Razor 'N' Tape. He begins with the rubbery bass, punchy horns and sweaty disco percussion of "Get On Down", before offering a perfect balance between low-slung strut and epic, string-laden brilliance on the even better "Make Me Dance". Flip for the percussion-heavy disco-funk workout "Tight Spot", and the atmospheric funk breaks, glistening guitars and spacey delays of EP closer "Ol' Funky Music".

Review: Given that Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan is the man at the controls, it's perhaps unsurprising that this surprise debut full-length from little known Canadian chanteuse Jessy Lanza drips with smooth, synthesized sweetness. Packed with Greenspan's trademark melancholic, Metro Area-ish synths, but built around Lanza's fragile, otherworldly vocals, Pull My Hair Back is a contender for the best leftfield pop album of the year. Variously touching on synthesized R&B, deep boogie, sparse torch songs (see the sublime title track) and starbust wonkiness (the beautifully off-kilter "As If"), Lanza and Greenspan have delivered an impeccable, unassuming delight. Recommended.

Review: Having done his bit to foster cordial relations between the US and Russia by releasing EPs from Anton Zap and Nina Kraviz, Underground Quality chief Jus-Ed turns his international gaze in the direction of the small, unassuming island(s) of Malta. The Malteser who earned the affection of Ed is Owen Jay, who lays down four slices of sumptuous deepness in the vein of Fred P. The A Side consists of "Memories Of You" and "Days Gone By", both of which are dripping in the emotive warmth that anything carrying the UQ stamp demands. Flip over for the eerie melodic shuffle of "Forever", while "Peach" rounds off a dope 12".

Review: Alex "Omar" Smith is certainly "One of a Kind". Like fellow Detroiters Kenny Dixon Jr and Theo Parrish, he has achieved cult status amongst serious deep house heads primarily by following his own path and sticking a solitary digit towards convention. That and being seriously good at what he does, of course. He begins this latest EP in confident mood, joining the dots between vintage New Jersey garage and bouncy deep house on "Less Pain", before wrapping slipped '80s synth-pop chords around a killer (machine) percussion track. Best of all, though, is title track "One of a Kind", a luscious chunk of slowly unfurling deep house positivity rich in ear-pleasing synthesizer motifs, surging chords and rush-inducing musicality.

Review: The Bobby Hamilton Quintet Unlimited changed paid homage to the Greek gods in the mid 70s with this unique one-off offering. "Ecology" is a sweet, rolling soul slice with glistening guitars and a velvet almost Sun-Ra style jazz aesthetic. "Anubis" is more of a driving, evocative Troubleman-style groove with vocals that build and gather momentum around each other with an almost gospel-like sensation. Powerful... As always from Athens Of The North.

Review: As someone who briefly escaped 70's Glasgow and got a taste of the golden age of NYC Disco, Al Kent is a perfect choice to lead you through a classy selection of some choice and rare Disco treats. Having used his huge collection in the past for re-edits and originals, he also took the bold step of forming his own band in 2007 under the name The Million Dollar Orchestra.

The selections here reflect the point at which Funk and Soul mutated into Disco, with most of the tracks capturing that pre-Moroder organic sound. Lee Alfred's Rockin-Poppin Full Tilting for example has a laid back vibe similar to Curtis Mayfield's more uptempo tunes. New Ghetto Express's version of Standing On The Verge of Getting It On (originally by Funkadelic) up's the tempo on the wigged-out classic, again combing the Funk with a Disco groove.

Lypso Disco by Smile Street People, as you'd guess from the title, has a playful Calypso lilt and bounce to it. Cosmic Disco by Patricia White on the other hand doesn't sound like something that Todd Terje or Lindstrom got their cues from, but it is a fun song with some brilliantly random thumb-piano playing in the background!

Anyone looking for samples will have a field day among these tracks, Sweet Daddy Floyd's I Just Can't Help Myself for example has a break in the middle to die for. You could loop up 4 bars practically anywhere and have something pretty damn funky to work with. For that reason alone, it's well worth having a listen and broadening your horizons.

Review: Romanian minimal hero Barac Nicolae is back, so get excited! This hero of Bucharest's new guard follows up the tremendous Theory EP (with Vincentiulian) last year which inaugurated his own Theory imprint but this time he appears for Frankfurt's Rawax for the fourth instalment of their Aira series. On the first side "Echoes" is dubby and atmospheric featuring Nicolae's always immaculate production standards with cerebral and hypnotic elements. On the flip "Surrounding Desert" is more intense but still ploughs away in reductionist fashion with some completely mindbending and tripped out sound design on top of his tightly crafted groove.

Review: We're barely a quarter of the way through the year and it already seems like Peggy Gou is going to be one of house music's heroes of 2018. Here, the Berlin-based South Korean follows-up her brilliant Once EP on Ninja Tune (which included the soon-to-be-an-anthem brilliance of "It Makes You Forget") with a new 12" for Phonica White (a label she first graced back in 2016). "Travelling Without Arriving" is a rubbery, sun-kissed deep house treat rich in elastic bass, toasty chords, glassy-eyed synthesizer melodies and dreamy, drifting electronics. On the flipside, Brooklyn beat-maker GE-OLOGY serves up a superb alternative version which retains the track's gentle positivity and breezy melodiousness while dragging it further towards futurist techno territory.

  4. Moonlight Drive (5:29)
Review: As spring begins to turn to summer, Distant Hawaii is already in full-on sunshine mode. You'll certainly struggle to find a more cheery, sun-kissed and positive house cut than "Turn Your Love Around", the cut that opens this label debut from recent L.P.C debutant Mood J. Based around samples from the well-known 1980s dancefloor jam (we'll not mention the source), it's as colourful a chunk of boogie-fuelled party house as you're likely to find. The smile-inducing positivity doesn't end there, either: check, for example, the Balearic arpeggio lines and warm dream house vibes of "The Arps", the glistening Balearic house tunefulness of "Moonlight Drive" (all rubbery bass, cascading melody lines and life-affirming chord progressions) and the smoky deep house dustiness of "NY Vibration".

Review: It's hard to find fault with anything by Detroit stalwart DJ Stingray. The Motor City veteran rarely puts a foot wrong, regardless of whether he's focusing on futurist techno or blistering, Drexciya-influenced electro. This EP for Lower Parts delivers the best of both worlds. On one hand, you have the stargazing bounce, undulating bassline, and shuffling 4/4 rhythms of "eRbB4" (also impressively remixed in an alien, Rotterdam electro style by Kon001), and the driving techno intensity of "Acetylocholine". On the other, there's "Denddrite", a ghetto-tech and footwork inspired electro blast that contrasts hissing rhythms with yearning, stretched-out chords.

  2. Dreaming (8:16)
Review: It would be fair to say that Young Pulse has been one of GAMM's most reliable re-editors of recent years. It's now almost four years since he made his debut and in that time he's released a quartet of must-have EPs of disco-fied, soul-fired reworks. Volume five contains just two tracks, but both are - somewhat predictably - very good. A-side "Strong Survive" is a veritable peak-time disco stomper, where punchy horns, soaring orchestration and guttural soul vocals are underpinned by a rambunctious disco-house groove. "Dreaming" sees our Parisian hero stretching out a killer SAM Records cut, making more of the seductive chorus vocals and mazy, jammed-out synth solos.

Review: Last year's first Correlation EP was something of a return to form for Space Dimension Controller. While his debut album Return To Mikrosektor-50 was arguably a little too eccentric, Correlation #1 saw Jack Hamill return to what he does best: namely making inspired, spaced-out house and techno tracks blessed with those trademark, ambient-inspired synth melodies. Happily, there's more of the same here. There's an attractiveness to the alien bleeps and delay-laden groove underpinning the brilliant "Angel Groove", while "Monodynamic" is gloriously wide-eyed - all surging melodies, cosmic effects and unfussy analogue grooves. Closer "Down in Sector H" is good, too, in that oh-so-blissful way that marks out Hamill's best productions.

Moreover, it makes a sterling job of all three - joyfully disco-inflected, poppily uplifting, stylistically adventurous and bolder than every before, this is a band who can reference ABBA and Bowie irony-free in a ditty about information overload and somehow get away with it - a bunch of eternal square pegs with emotional wallop and deft melodic skills at their disposal, constantly in search of musical worlds beyond empty rhetoric and grandstanding gestures.

Review: We were wondering when J Rocc would put his nimble fingers all over what was this year's most compelling reissue compilations. The Stones Throw associate does so in style, breaking down Antonym's "Cinnamon Air" into a deranged, breakbeat-filtered hip-hop excursion. His Work on that "Dirty" track by Hard Corps is also inspirational, resuscitating those italo lyrics more than ever before, but the "Flying Turns" remix is simply brilliant, where Rocc transforms it into a very modern and aware house beatdown. Das Ding is also given a retouch on their "HTSA", re-inventing those snares and working closely on its previously more muffled arrangement. J Rocc on top as always!

Review: It's more chilly, worldly outsider jazz gear from Barcelona's excellent Rocafort imprint; this time the crew return with the one-man show Kind & Kinky Zoo alongside Adam Gibbons, both making their debut for the label with this smart two-tracker. "Wonder Bra" is a solo mission from K&KZ, a fast-paced drum locomotive with plenty of whistling organs flying around in the high-ends, while Lack Of Afro's remix of "VLAM" by K&KZ and Adam Gibbons is a funkier, more laid-back swinger for a bit of one, two, three four on the dancefloor. Tidy 7" for the soul lovers!

Review: The East Coast's house don DJ Jus-Ed is, as always, on an unstoppable run of form. His latest bundle of club-friendly tunes comes on his own Underground Quality, of course, and it's four tracks from the man himself - preaching the gospel like only he knows how! Starting with "Acid Fro", the mood is darker and more hypnotic than his usual approach - this is a proper belter in every sense of the word - while "Ice 597 To Frankfurt" is more minimal, wavey and utterly pouncing. Flip the record and you got the melancholic melodica of "Katzback Gruv", another stomping club affair for the earlier set times, and "Train Ride To Berlin", a jittery, percussion-driven bit of neo-tribalism. Hot, as always. Don't miss this!

  1. You're Doing It With Her (When It Should Be With Me) (2:45)
  2. Cry Myself To Sleep (2:06)
Review: Rhetta Hughes (Los Angeles, California, November 9, 1953) is a R&B singer and actress. She starred in the Broadway musicals Dreamgirls, Don't Play Us Cheap and Amen Corner: for which she was nominated for a Tony Award in the category for Best Actress in a Musical in 1984. She also appeared in the films Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, The Wiz (as a member of the choir) as well as the film version of Don't Play Us Cheap. She was also seen in the TV version of the musical Purlie, and appeared in an episode of Law & Order. In addition, Hughes had two entries on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart including "Angel Man (G.A.)" which hit #1 in 1983. "You're Doing It With Her (When It Should Be With Me)" is the kind of soul classic that the late Amy Winehouse could have taken her cues from while "Cry Myself To Sleep" appears on the flip.
