Review: Originally released on Shelter Records way back in 1993, the Atmosphere EP from US house icon Kerri Chandler remains a great example of the New Jersey producer's sublime touch when it comes to driving instrumental house music. Some 22 years on, this new edition from Shelter demonstrates the qualities of Atmosphere remain undimmed, put simply the four tracks possess a certain energy that is undeniably timeless. If house music is a feeling, then cuts such as "Climax 2" and "Atmosphere 2" prove that emotion is that feeling. A classic 12" that any self respecting house DJ needs in their collection stat!

  1. Never Grow Old (re-plant) (7:22)
  2. Phobia (re-plant) (5:35)
Review: The latest transmission of M Plant's 20th Anniversary celebrations sees label boss Robert Hood come through with some self styled 'replants' of recent Floorplan material. "Never Grow Old" of course originates from Hood's triumphant 2013 Floorplan LP Paradise, arriving midway through and impressive enough to feature in Ben Klock's Fabric mix. Here the gospel vibes remain but they are complemented by a searing Motor City key line that is really quite hypnotic over it's seven minute duration. Complementing this is a replant of "Phobia", one of Hood's last releases of 2013 which evens out the hoover rave overtones of the original in favour of some trippy synth loops that prove just as effective.

Review: Arthur Russell and Steve D'Aquisto's legendary 1980 club anthem has always been shrouded with stories when it comes to unreleased and alternative cuts. And West End have just added a whole load of fuel to the hype fire. Two versions and brand new edit: taking Arthur's original genuinely loose instrumentation and raw funk (as opposed to Levan's more famous stripped back club-ready takes that took the centre stage), both the female and male versions are here in all their extended, unreleased glory. For added measure, edit king Kon has crafted a duet cut that fuses both versions into one gloriously slack, free-flowing groove. We're all over this record.

Review: We never quite know what to expect from leftfield explorer Jon Hopkins, but we know it will be worth a listen. Immunity, his fourth solo album (he's recorded two others, one with Brian Eno and another with King Creosote), doesn't disappoint. Rooted in shuffling, forthright and occasionally off-kilter rhythms, it melds hazy, late night atmospherics and subtle melodies with intense, droning chords, woozy electronics and all manner of inventive noises. It's a blend that repeatedly pays dividends, from the mournful pianos and jumpy rhythms of "Breathe This Air', to the crystalline, soundscape ambience of "Abandon Window", and glitchy wonkiness of "Form By Firelight".

Review: Two silky sides of Brazilian disco soul on Mr Bongo's perennial Brazil 45s series. First up, long-haired lothario samba fusionista Marcos teams up with Leon Ware for a pristine polished piece of early 80s disco funk. Golden harmonies, staccato vocals and a super juicy bassline; it's not hard to see why it was his best selling single. Flip for the equally smooth "Alleluia" from Brazilian boogie gospelist; this one is all about the percussion heavy breakdown. Proper sunshine block party business.

Review: With 'I'm Your Brother' Basic Channel initiates its deep house label Main Street. The A-side features the original vocal track which production is orientated on the classics of the genre. As one would expect the result is outstanding. This fact is even more true since the dub mix on the B-side has been done by Chez n Trent - a producer dream team of the early/mid 90s.

Review: "I get deep, I get deep, I get deeper..." It's a sad by product of sample culture that Roland Clarke's 2000 house burner "I Get Deep" is not as well known as the tracks that have subsequently jacked his vocal, both credited and uncredited. For anyone wishing to strengthen their collection with US vocal house, this repress of the original Shelter release is a must have. All four versions of the track are prime examples of US deep house at its bumping best, though the combination of Clarke's booming vocals and jazz licked production from Shelter duo Freddy Sanon and Paul Simpson is very hard to top!

  2. Why Can't We Live Together (LNTG No More Work rework - Late Night Tuff Guy edit) (7:01)
Review: Last year, legendary disco label T.K released a pair of 12" singles featuring fresh Todd Terje reworks of classic material from K.C & The Sunshine Band. It was such a success that they've decided to repeat the exercise, recruiting Aussie rework specialist Late Night Tough Guy to breathe new life into Timmy Thomas' impassioned anti-war record and the recent subject of sped-up sampling by Drake, "Why Can't We Live Together". Typically, his version is built around a lolloping, disco-friendly house groove, onto which the original record's killer organs and vocals sit. It's tastefully done and hugely playable, of course, though some disco DJs will still prefer to reach for Thomas' impeccable original. Handily, T.K has included that heartfelt slice of soul brilliance on the A-side.

After the previous Burial Mix album Showcase (BMD-1, released 1998), exclusively with vocals by Paul St. Hilaire, the present release features eight tunes, voiced in Berlin, New York and Jamaica by seven artists, some of them living legends; Cornel Campbell, Paul St. Hilaire, Shalom, The Chosen Brothers, Love Joy, Jennifer Lara and Jah Batta. Released simultaneously, The Versions (BMD-3) contains the corresponding instrumental versions backed with dubs that integrate minimal structures with Rhythm & Sound's breathtaking atmospheric density. An essential twin-release.

Review: If you've ever got a few hours to spare, check out Legowelt's discography - the Dutch analogue fetishist is astonishingly productive (and, of course Legowelt is simply one of Danny Wolfers' many pseudonyms). Here, he adds another label to the growing list with a surprise appearance on Andrew Morgan's Washington D.C-based Peoples Potential Unlimited imprint. Unsurprisingly, Wolfers explores many of his favourite themes on Puzzles in Life, merrily skipping between melodic, bubbling deep house (the excellent title track), slo-mo Detroit futurism ("Video Phone To Space"), super-slo stargazing boogie (the superb "Cruise Till The Sun Shines") and woozy, intergalactic ambience ("Los Alamos Motel"). In many ways, this is an unusual turn from PPU, but it's a calculated gamble that's more than paid off.

Review: There's something wonderfully hazy and fluid about this debut album from German producer Hodini. Built around a combination of unapologetically blazed instrumental hip-hop, Moodymann influences, and the sort tumbling, swinging, sample heavy deep house promoted by Andres, Seven Davis Jr and others, M$03 sound tailor made for humid, lazy summer afternoons. There are collaborations with Glenn Astro and Max Graef, amongst others, and an overriding sense that Hodini is a producer on the rise. Grab a beer, slouch against the nearest tree, light up a jazz cigarette and get lost in the groove.

Review: Florence based label Bosconi is back with 100 Hz aka UK legends Lee Renacre and James Chapman who have been around since the late eighties. This is their second release on the Italian imprint; their Mila EP was their first for the label back in 2009. On the A side we have a re-issue of their 1989 track "Shoot The Bar" a sturdy and cyclical house groove on the tougher side of things with a nice double bass holding the track above a tight rhythm and dreamy Rhodes piano. "Primary Colours" sounds more like minimal, but given more of an edge by all the dusty and lively analogue machines that power it along. Its bumpy bass and restrained synth stabs supporting some simplistic rhythms and works quite well. Finally "Oliva Funk" is more of a classic NYC house cut, those rapid fire cowbell strikes will help it bear even more resemblance to classic Kerri Chandler style vibes.

Starting things off with the eerie soundscape of "-Encounter+" he soon launches into the usual biz you know him for, with the rusty acid workout of "Boogie Down Sessions" and the right party starter "Midnight Circle" which is reminiscent of Motor City Drum Ensemble's Raw Cuts series. Finally "W.T.T.D." presents us with yet another wacky VHS sci-fi soundscape.

Review: This tasty 12" sees Italian crate diggers Twice and Volcov each have a go at reworking a 1979 jazz-funk workout from one of krautrock's lesser-celebrated outfits. The original - which, in case you fancy looking it up, isn't actually called "Tomah" - is a brilliant fusion of Brazilian influenced rhythms, sparring electric piano solos and relentless bass. Twice's A-side version maintains the essence of the original, expertly rearranging and extending the various solos to create a mind-altering chunk of breathless dancefloor bliss. Volcov takes a slightly different approach on the flip, turning it into a rolling samba-house groover complete with fluttering clarinet solos. Both versions are superb, and sound like summer anthems in the making.

Review: Dekmantel's new Selectors compilation series and festival was apparently designed to celebrate those DJs who not only know how to work a dancefloor, but also dig deep for inspiration. First to showcase his dusty-fingered credentials is Danilo 'MCDE' Plessow, who's used the opportunity to gather together some of his favourite, hard-to-find house, disco and jazz-funk cuts. There's naturally much to admire, from the breezy soulfulness of Dj Slym Fas's 1997 gem "Luv Music" and Risque III's early Chicago deep house killer "Essence Of A Dream", to the ludicrously expensive jazz-funk-meets-disco-boogie brilliance of Licky's 1979 obscurity "African Rock". It's a cliche to describe a compilation as containing "all killers" and "no fillers", but in this instance it's an accurate assessment.

Review: Music From Memory is a new label founded by Redlight Records duo Tako Reyenga and Abel Nagenast and fellow Amsterdam dweller Jamie Tiller and arrives with the mission statement "Giving overlooked and unreleased music that we love a second chance." Whilst there are plenty of labels going down the reissue path with varying degrees of musical integrity, its clear this trio have the best intentions at heart and their debut releases sets the bar truly high. The ocean loving Rhode Island based keyboardist and singer song writer Leon Lowman self released a series of albums in the early 80s dedicated to his hometown and the various women he tried to woo during this period. Executed as lo-fi beach funk and lazy synth jams in a manner that sounds way ahead of it's time, Lowman's work never received the wider acclaim it truly deserves and these albums have become highly sought after curios (check the Discogs listings for his debut LP Syntheseas) Material from both his 1980s albums features on Liquid Diamonds along with unreleased material that Lowman recorded at the time and this 12 track collection is likely to prove very popular with the musical historians out there!

  2. Lust Abandon (Powell reconstruction)
Review: Having inaugurated the Jealous God label on a collaborative 12? with Semantica boss Svreca, Juan Mendez returns here to helm the third 'issue' under his Silent Servant guise. The more feverish Downwards completists will recognise "Lust Abandon" as a track Mendez committed to tape for a limited split cassette release with Regis earlier this year which was issued exclusively through Los Angeles vinyl emporium Mount Analogue. The chance to grip it on vinyl should not be passed up as "Lust Abandon" finds Mendez expanding on the deathly drawl that made up much of his excellent 2012 LP Negative Fascination, though there's a noted drop in tempo which serves to highlight how good a producer he is. Flip it over and Diagonal boss Powell turns in a splendidly ramshackle reconstruction that's driven by typically recycled no wave drums that always appear on the verge of collapsing. Do check the accompanying mix CD which comes from cult Boston-based DJ Ning Nong and features tracks by Duran Duran, Primal Scream, Ancient Methods and Mira Calix.

Review: Here's something to get excited about: a cracking new cut from Detroit deep house legend Alton Miller, backed with a 'Sound Signature' translation from the equally revered Theo Parrish. Miller's version of "Bring Me Down", is something of a treat: a sparkling, starry deep house epic that's blessed with immaculate vocals from soul chanteuse Maurissa Rose. Parrish's translation is equally as stretched out and similarly enjoyable, but is far looser and dustier in feel, with warmer bass and beats that naturally tend towards the jazzier. It's naturally more in keeping with Parrish's work than Miller's, but retains enough of the latter's touches to be counted as a fine remix.

Review: Jorun Bombay has form for breathing new life into Jackson family favourites, having previously released a fine 7" featuring a stellar revision of "It's Great To Be Here". This time he tackles a solo MJ cut, lacing the vocal and horns from "Soul Makossa"-inspired single "Got To Be Startin' Something" over a bustling, bass-heavy groove previously featured on one of the most famous hip-hop cuts of all time. Arguably even better is flipside "Give Me The Remix", a brilliant, 1980s 12" dub style revision of another Q Jones production. It's pleasingly stripped-down, making use of the original's killer synth bassline, jazz guitars and sing-along vocals, whilst jettisoning much of the musical filler. Top stuff, all told.

Review: California funk troupe Orgone really need no prior introduction and it's great to see the group line up for a release here on the Colemine Records label. Initially released on clear vinyl in limited numbers earlier in 2014 whilst label boss Terry Cole was on tour, Don't Stop has now been pressed in a larger quantity for all the budding funk selectors out there and shows two distinct sides to the Orgone sound. The title track is all about the power house vocal performance from Tiffany Austin and how Orgone "make it easy" for her to ride the groove. Flip over and "Powerfeed" is Orgone laying down a heaving slab of heavy instrumental funk.

Review: For a six-year period between 2006 and 2012, a tiny Italian restaurant in Lower East Side became one of New York's hippest weeknight hangouts. With the assistance of unofficial promoter/musical programmer Jason Kincade, Golf Channel has put together this celebratory collection, featuring tracks from regular visitors to the unlikely party space. There's much to admire, from the jazz-tinged deep dub disco goodness of Dedication's brilliant "Let Us Rock You", and the Loose Control Band's woozy deep disco treat "Doin' It", to the low-slung disco-acid atmospherics of Populette's "Another One", and the expansive synthesizer soundscapes of Thugfucker's "100". Best of all, though, is the cacophonous, acid-friend disco-punk madness of Totes Preesh's "The Spirit Is Alive".

Deep House
  1. Trackin
  2. Drummer Downstairs
  3. Frayed
Review: Anthony Shakir comes correct on the Fit Sounds imprint with three tracks that veer between the many strands of Detroit machine funk business. Proceedings commence with "Trackin", an unadulterated slice of rawness that leans on disco via filtered synth flourishes that burrow deep, with the thumping bass drums and soaring string section giving the track that motor city hue. The very loud and very good beatdownisms of "That Drumming Track" follows with a multiplicity of layered drums raining down and somehow achieving a fractured rhythmic thud; think Roska collaborating with Kyle Hall. On the flip Shake goes deep with the slow mo, off kilter burn of "Frayed" which sounds almost wrong at 33rpm during the opening sparse moments. The arrival of a slowly ascending organ sound that mutates brilliantly is the point where jaws drop as the track unfolds in stunning fashion.

Review: Josh Tillman, the ex-Fleet Foxes member, has confused plenty with his alter ego Father John Misty, and occasionally it can be hard to tell whether the recently-married troubadour is inhabiting a distinct role or dealing out confessional ditties straight from the heart. Yet what is beyond question is how fascinating and addictive I Love You, Honeybear manages to be. By turns lushly arranged and stark, Tillman sets his reflective songwriting to a sonic backdrop infused with Laurel Canyon flavour, arriving at a reinvention of the singer-songwriter stylings of the mid-'70s for a newer, still more complicated era-think Elton John by way of John Grant. The result is a modern-day triumph that's as acerbic as it is emotionally involving.

  4. House Music Will Never Die (Glenn Afro dub) (7:36)
Review: For their latest deep dive into the world of hard-to-find house classics, Italy's Groove Records take us back to 1996. "House Music Will Never Die" marked Glenn Underground's first collaboration with vocalist Cei-Bei (AKA Curtis Harman) and has long been considered one of the Chicagoan producer's finest releases. Wisely, Groove has decided against tinkering with a classic, instead serving up all four mixes from the original Cajual Records 12". Choose between the classic deep house soul of the GU Cei-Bei Foot Mix, the wonderfully summery, jazz guitar-laden CVO Bismark Hotel Mix, Mark Grant's brilliantly evocative, stretched-out interpretation, and a killer Afro Dub that makes great use of a heavy analogue bassline. All four versions are top notch.
