Lonely Night (reissue)

Disco/Nu-Disco
Lonely Night (vocal version)
Lonely Night (Technicolor version)
Lonely Night (Flemming Dalum remix)
Lonely Night (Rey David Diaz remix)
Review: Italian trio Colours shared only three singles with the world, and all were made in the hotbed period of 1985-86, when labels such as Discomagic monopolised the roost. 'Lonely Night' was their manifest magic trick; its poking, reverb-slurried lead is a slick staccato, upon which a lonesome vocal line by singer Mauro Santoro calls out into the night from the picture window. A kind of emo efflux is at play, where the 80s fascination with vulnerability is set to the brunt-borne, sublimated beat of the discotheque. Little is known about this band save for Santoro, making this a collectors item less concerned with band BTS or making-of shenanigans, and more the inherently appreciable shape of a sound.

You're My First You're My Last (Flemming Dalum remix)
Review: A proud proclamation is made in the name of love, with Linda Jo Rizzo's 'You're My First, You're My Last'. The New Yorker and Italo disco star had emigrated twice through careers in fashion and nutrition before branching out into music, where she joined The Flirts, and after which time she went solo in 1985. Her second ever EP after her EMI debut 'Fly Me High' first saw a ZYX Music release and alluded nominally to the Barry White hit of almost the same name. From first to last, this song deals in the romantic transition from imagistic to deepened styles of loving, where, at first, "for me, love was like a candy store", and afterwards, the idea of commitment became much more palatable, between which times Rizzo's love object had stayed loyal all along.

Zoom H5studio Handy Recorder
Zoom H5studio Handy Recorder (handheld recorder)
Cat: 1080762

Handheld recorder with high grade microphones and preamps.
Notes: The H5studio was made for seamless and professional production. Creators can record flawless audio with stunningly clear microphones, studio-grade preamps, and 32-bit float recording.

The 19.4mm microphones capture audio with incredible frequency response, 140 dB max SPL, and an expansive dynamic range. Their increased size captures recordings with unmatched depth and clarity.

The H5studio features Zooms F-series preamps, giving your audio unmatched clarity (-127 dBu EIN). With dual AD converters and 32-bit float, it delivers an impressive 132dB dynamic range, capturing everything without noise or distortion.

32-bit float and 16/24-bit formats each have their advantages. 32-bit float prevents clipping but requires post-production. 16/24-bit eliminates the need for post-processing but requires gain adjustment to prevent clipping. The H5studio offers the best of both worlds with 32-bit float and dedicated gain knobs - no clipping and no need for post-production.

The H5studio captures up to six tracks (four iso-tracks plus a stereo mix) with sample rates up to 192 kHz.

Carefully engineered RF shielding keeps interference from smartphones and Wi-Fi routers out of your recordings, anywhere you go.

The H5studio features "advanced look-ahead" limiters which anticipate potential overloads and prevent distortion before it reaches your track.

The two locking XLR/TRS inputs support +48V phantom power and +4dBu line level. There is also a 3.5mm stereo jack with plug-in power.

The H5studio's 3.0 capsule system supports 32-bit float and gives creators more options to use the right mic for their recording.

Monitor input levels and real-time waveforms with the full color LCD, making it easy to adjust and monitor audio in real time.

Use the loud 20 mW headphone output to monitor or listen back to your recordings in any environment.

Use the 3.5mm stereo LINE OUT to connect directly to a camera, easily syncing your audio and video.

The built-in speaker has a maximum output of 250mW for previewing recordings on the spot.

The H5studio is a 4-in/2-out USB audio interface for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, supporting 32-bit float and 16/24-bit recording. Stream live and simultaneously record a backup to microSD.

Disclosures (with Voiron - G303 Acid remix)
Review: The French duo Minimum Syndicat land on Dutch label Zodiak Commune with a double-barrelled dose of mind-altering machine funk. 'Knowing That We Know Nothing' opens with a cold-blooded electro crawl, all dystopian pads and twitchy circuitry, while the G303 remix rips it wide open with slamming kicks and acid phrases that slither like live wires. On the flip, 'Disclosures' ups the BPMs in collaboration with fellow Parisian Voiron, its militant acid techno groove sharpened into a peak-time burner. G303 returns to mutate that track too, saturating it in overdriven 303 squelch and off-grid snare flurries. Raw, unrelenting and brilliantly engineered i this is the kind of record that weaponises philosophy for the dancefloor.

I Love Rock'n'Roll
I Love Rock & Roll (feat The Sex Pistols)
Bad Reputation (feat Pat Smear)
Review: Few artists embody rock 'n' roll's rebellious spirit like Joan Jett. From her early days with The Runaways to fronting the Blackhearts, her blend of punk attitude and stadium-sized hooks reshaped rock history. 'I Love Rock & Roll' became an era-defining anthem, while 'Bad Reputation' cemented her status as an uncompromising trailblazer. This 40th-anniversary edition sees Jett revisit these classics with The Sex Pistols and Germs/Nirvana man Pat Smear, two figures whose own punk legacies align perfectly with her fearless approach. Still as electrifying as ever, Jett's influence echoes through generations, proving rock 'n' roll will never die - if anything, it only gets louder.

Review: Mandar's 'Lose Your Way' EP on Yoyaku showcases four tracks of refined house and techno. Side-1 starts with 'Straight Sneaky,' a classy tech house track that offers a brisk jaunt into sci-fi with airy and hypnotic elements. 'Lose Your Way' (Smoked version) follows, delivering acid house vibes with vocals reminiscent of Abe Duque, but enhanced with melodic elements that elevate it to a smooth, futuristic sound. Side-2 opens with 'Crossroads,' a catchy techno track blending Detroit and UK styles for a perfect balance of heady and body-moving dynamics. The EP concludes with 'My Phantasy,' an 80s-inspired acid house track that steps up to nearly acid techno territory while maintaining a crucial dose of funk. This EP is a masterclass in minimal and tech house, offering a journey through various stylistic influences with sophistication and flair.

Review: Waage is at the heart of the contemporary dub techno scene and makes another fine statement with this outing on Icelandic titan Exos's X/OZ Music. This is his fourth outing and it could be his best: 'W9' rolls with great depth and grainy dub textures that speak of a subterranean world. 'W10' is more dark and heavy like it's soundtracking a dirty factory after dark. 'W11 (feat Cold)' layers in some psychedelic swirls to frictionless beats that could roll for days and never get old. 'W12 (feat Exos)' is lighter and more airy with a playful bounce in the drums.

Review: In a smooth flying saucered descent, Solara Melfera continues the WSNWG: Back to Zero journey, adding a new dimension to the label's evolving sound. This compilation unites eight carefully selected tracks curated by German producer and DJ Rodhad, fusing nighttime prowler moods and subtle celestials. With a cover artwork bathed in golden, sunlit tones, the music has an eclipsing mood, juggling strong shades of light and dark. Kicking off with Ignez' 'Passion Overdrive', we're met with a brooding techno number with overdubbed lyrics by the artist, recounting the artist's rather libidinally charged dream from the previous night.

Review: Chicago DJ and producer Ines Aguilar goes most notably by the name Work Ethic, and is responsible for a ream of parties thrown across the Northern city. Their first ever EP inaugurates the Work Ethic label, and emphasises avant-funk of the "what is that?" variety. Early nods from trusted selectors like Darryn Jones of Durty Truth and Tim Zawada speak to the crate appeal here, but this isn't about hype: t's about taste. From obscure boogier 'No More Fighting' to leftfield burner 'Cain And Abel', these are cuts that do the talking without needing to shout.

Review: Argentine electro-cumbia innovator Chancha Via Circuito (Pedro Canale) has a truly strong sense of give and take. His debut movements saw to Bienaventuranza (2018), a critically acclaimed album deep-setting his role in a gauzy downtempo reshape of the global music idiom. A full remix EP of the record followed, spewing forth fresh interpretations by echelonic music masters, including Euro-techno titan Nicola Cruz on 'Alegria', and Spanish producer Baiuca. Now, finally, comes the third in a three-step movement of remixes, this time hearing Chancha Via Circuito himself offer his own remixing hand to several of said very same artists, the works of El Buho, Nickodemus, and Lagartijeando also in tow. Deep, earthy tunes, full of natural oud harmonics blended with chanting, understated downbeats.

Review: This isn't an EP of house tracks crafted in the mid 1990s by the late member of the royal family, but rather a dive into the back catalogue of New Jersey producer Heeley Calator of SMACK Productions fame. In keeping with much of Heeley's work, the four tracks on show (all originally released in 1994) are undeniably X-rated and full of sexually-charged vocals. Check first the 'Instru-Beat' mix of 'Whose Dick Is This', a rolling, low-slung and lightly soulful garage-house workout, before admiring the warmer, dreamier and jazzier 'What's My Name (The Tribe & Friends Mix)'. Over on the flip, WOLF has served up two takes on 'Big Dick - Mutha F*cka': the percussively dense, organ-rich New Jersey garage heaviness of the 'Sample Mix' and the stripped-back tribal house headiness of the 'Drum Mix'.

Review: With Pattern Gardening, London-after-Leeds imprint Wisdom Teeth yank out an extra gnasher we didn't know we had. As has always been the case, label heads Facta and K-Lone could be said to have curated and curetted a new compilation from the joint dentist's chair, exacting a 22-track root canal with periodontal precision, nearly doubling the size of their V/A ambit since 2024's Club Moss. But on this selective six-track sampler for wax, we've only a further sanding down of a much larger minimal, micro and tech house selection; here's gummy textures and maxillary moods by Polygonia, rRoxymore, Lurka, Sub Basics, and newcomer Jichael Mackson. Clarity and sound design are top priorities, as is the ideal of whitened teeth flashed by the poolside. Snappy, Rhodesy, watery.

On Side-A, 'Ease Your Mind' by Borys offers a mesmerising minimal groove, blending techy, robotic beats with funky, spacey elements. The track's otherworldly vibe creates a hypnotic atmosphere, perfect for both laid-back and deep dancefloor moments. On Side B, 'Los Demeteros"' by Yzer is a heavy stomper, featuring a crunchy bassline that drives the track forward. The eerie, alien melodies lend an unsettling, yet quality to the track, making it feel both futuristic and rooted in the past. The dynamic composition of 'Los Demeteros' draws listeners into its depth, while maintaining a solid, danceable energy throughout. This release is a stunning journey through minimal and electro-techno, showcasing the unique sound of Kyiv's underground scene.

Review: The latest from Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets serves as another chaotic chapter in the band’s relentless journey through the mind of Jack McEwan. As the five-piece continues to thrive on a steady stream of eccentric, genre-blending rock, they deliver yet another single ahead of their seventh album, which promises to add more fire to their reputation. ‘Weird World Awoke’ is a fast-paced, ferocious blast of frenetic guitar, one that spins and stutters in equal measure, much like McEwan’s own description of their creative process—"a mongrel of sorts"—packed with everything from Greek philosophy to dog bites.
Though the sound continues to fluctuate between grunge-inspired bursts and psychedelic tangents, this track feels like the band firing on all cylinders. The lyrics, wrapped in manic energy, align perfectly with the restless tempo. It’s an almost absurdly fun experience, veering from chaotic to beautiful in the space of a few minutes. As they build up to their new record, this release reminds us that Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are here to keep you guessing—and their unpredictability is exactly what makes them so captivating.

Notes: ired of spending ages just to transfer 100 tracks to your USB from Rekordbox? Most USB drives aren't designed with DJs in mind. What really impacts speed isn't always advertised many drives handle large files well (like videos) but struggle with rapid updates of multiple small files, like track metadata, cue points, and analysis data.

For DJs, efficiency is everything. Your library needs to update, transfer, and sync seamlessly - because every second on stage matters.

These drives have been pushed to the limit with over 350 hours of nonstop DJ sets across two weeks, tested on Pioneer DJ and Denon DJ standalone units and media players. They've endured intense media recording, including DJ performances and 4K ProRes video capture, alongside rigorous Stressdisk tests to verify long-term memory durability.

Designed to withstand extreme conditions, they've been exposed to high heat and dust in the Black Rock Desert, and subjected to 500+ cycles of plugging and unplugging to simulate years of real-world use. Built for DJs who demand reliability in any environment.

This drive is pre-formatted in FAT32 to ensure seamless performance across all DJ equipment. While some newer setups support ExFAT or HFS, FAT32 remains the most reliable option for full compatibility even with gear that's a few years old.

To maintain optimal performance and prevent potential library issues, it's recommended to keep 10-15% of the storage free. This ensures smooth operation and a hassle-free DJ experience.

No Commitment
Review: 70s and early 80s Jamaican producer Keith Hudson's approach to dub was never about smooth edges or easy rhythms. His productions are dense, disorienting, heavy with delay, bass and drums that sound like they're ricocheting down a well. The Soul Syndicate, his long-time studio band, provide the backbone hereideeply locked-in grooves that Hudson warps into something ghostly. 'No Commitment' staggers forward with stabbing guitar chops that seem to dissolve mid-strike, while 'Ire Ire' loops through warped vocal fragments and echo chambers that stretch into infinity. 'Bad Things' and its dub counterpart pull apart the rhythm until it feels skeletal, each hit landing in the empty space between delay trails. Hudson's use of reverb and tape manipulation isn't just about atmosphere, but about control as well. He shifts and reshapes the mix to turn steady rhythms into something unsteady, always shifting just out of reach. 'Desiree' drifts through flickering hi-hats and cavernous low-end, while 'Keeping Us Together' seems to slow down and speed up in the same breath. There's something darker, more claustrophobic in the way he structures space and silence. Even the brighter moments, like 'Mercy' with its open, rolling groove, carry an unease, as if the music itself is bracing for collapse. Hudson was an architect of mood, twisting familiar elements into something deeply immersive and strangely hypnotic.

Wee Noise Makers PGB-1 Portable GrooveBox (black aluminium case)
Cat: 1025150 Rel: 31 May 25

Portable synthesiser & sequencer
Notes: Wee Noise Makers PGB-1 is an advanced yet portable synthesizer and sequencer that allows you to craft complex musical pieces anywhere. This all-in-one, open-source, customizable device is designed to empower aspiring musicians, seasoned creators, and makers. It isn't just an instrument-it's your gateway to the world of music production and audio synths.

PGB-1 has open-source stock firmware that makes it a playful and powerful groove box. It allows you to craft complex musical pieces with drums, bass, lead, samples, reverb, bitcrusher, overdrive, and others.

Orchestrated by an advanced sequencer with conditional steps, repeats/ratcheting, pattern chaining, chord sequencing, song mode, live sequencing effects, and more.

PGB-1 is Wee Noise Makers' response to the current landscape of entry-level hardware synthesizers and groove boxes. In recent years, we saw a plethora of new electronic instruments marketed as accessible, affordable, and designed for beginners. Yet, often these instruments can feel limited, tying users to a specific sound or ecosystem. These limits sometimes feel artificial, pushing you to combine multiple products of the same line to actually make meaningful music. At the same time leading to frustrating sequencing, connection, and mixing issues that defeat the portability and playfulness of the instruments.

With the PGB-1, Wee Noise Makers wanted to address all these shortcomings, bringing you an instrument that is:

All-in-one: you only need one device to craft complete music pieces
Powerful: Drums, bass, lead, samples, etc. with advanced sequencing features
Truly pocket-size: 10 x 6.6 x 1.5 cm, smaller footprint than a smartphone
Hackable: Designed for customization, open-source firmware, and compatible with several programming languages (including Python)
Creativity should not be limited by the tools you have, but empowered by them. With the PGB-1, Wee Noise Makers are dedicated to creating a platform that encourages innovation and experimentation. Whether you are a musician looking to explore new sounds, a developer eager to create unique software, or a hobbyist who enjoys tweaking and building.

PGB-1 is designed to be customized and modified to your taste. The front panel is a bare PCB, designed with the open-source software Kicad. The production file will be available so that anyone can make its own version with custom graphics and get it manufactured for a few bucks.

PGB-1 is also hackable with CircuitPython, C\C++, and Ada support for programming your own synthesizers, video games, or any audio-based projects.

By making the PGB-1 open source, a sandbox is provided for the audio community. Users can delve into the code, modify existing features, or add entirely new functionalities. This flexibility not only enhances the capabilities of the PGB-1 but also fosters a collaborative environment where users can share their creations and learn from each other.

Additionally, Wee Noise Makers have set up a dedicated Discord server for all PGB-1 users and enthusiasts to discuss, share, and contribute to the growing ecosystem.

Open-source software is not as common in the audio industry, but with this project, the aim is to follow the path of great manufacturers such as Mutable Instruments or Winterbloom.

We Shine So Bright
Review: Colombia-based duo and Bogota scene-players Julian Sanza (who you may know as part of 2020 Soundsystem) and Lafrench Toast have decided to add their own spin to a stone cold classic pop tune. With this one they manage to flip the iconic 'Thriller' into a nu-disco world. The drums are funky, the synths are explosive and full of cosmic colour and plenty of the original motifs remain to ensure that crowds will appreciate the work done. 'We Shine So Bright' on the flip is another sunny sound with nice breezy pads and mid tempo drum funk. Two useful and playful cuts.

Review: More than just a school concert, 1975's Rocking Grass was a sensation. On one fine estival day, The College Andre-Grasset auditorium overflowed, leaving hundreds spellbound. Registering its impact, Jean-Yves Quesnel and colleagues immortalised the show into a recording, transforming Rocking Grass into Phono Grass.Sessions at College Edouard-Montpetit's studio captured the energy of a shifting musical landscape in Quebec; and pianist Benoit Sarrazin, unknowingly recorded mid-performance, later became a professional musician. The album's original songs, 'Le Roi Muffe' and 'Bright Moments', embodied the era's creative freedom, with the latter later sampled by DJs and featured on Canadian Racer. Originally pressed on a 500-copy run, 1001 est Cremazie become a prized collectible; now it's much more readily available.

Review: Wax Digits hits release number five with a tight and tidy two-tracker from the late veteran Robert Ouimet who passed a couple of years ago. Before then he cooked up these gems with his pal and production partner Dave Godin. They are being released as a tribute to the memory of Ouimet and a fine one they are too. 'Plenty' has a raw groove and big chords with jangling guitars adding hints of melancholy that counter the big stabs. Soulful vocals are a great finishing touch then 'Funky Together' is more loose and strident with big horns leading the way under psyched-out chords. Two quality party starters.

Review: Thom Yorke and Mark Pritchard revive the collaboration first aired on the latter's 2016 album Unde The Sun, this time across a full album reportedly four years in the (top secret) making. It's a compelling synthesis of Yorke's atmospheric melancholy and Pritchard's textured production. It expores a range of moods, from the uneasy tension of 'A Fake In A Faker's World' to the hypnotic rhythms of 'Back In The Game', while the eerie, spectral qualities of 'This Conversation Is Missing Your Voice' reveal the pair's ability to intertwine experimental soundscapes with a visceral emotional pull. Standout moments include 'Gangsters,' where Pritchard's intricately layered beats mesh with Yorke's haunting vocal delivery, and 'Wandering Genie,' which closes the journey with a strange sense of release. The music takes unexpected turns, not just as a statement of collaboration, but as a reflection of two artists playing with the unknown, pulling their sonic worlds into unexplored spaces. Each track is a feather in the cap of their combined ingenuity, with Yorke's vocal vulnerability and Pritchard's production wizardry in full synergy.

Review: Since Radiohead went on hiatus a few years back, Thom Yorke has thrown himself into all sorts of solo and collaborative projects. His latest sees him join forces with Sydney-based British electronic music stalwart Mark Pritchard for an album that expands on their previous collaboration (the superb 'Beautiful People' from Pritchard's 2018 album Under The Sun). It's a breathtakingly brilliant concoction all told, with the pair conjuring ethereal, oddball and immersive songs in which Yorke's distinctive vocals - sometimes delivered as you'd expect, other times layered-up, mutilated or utilised as textures - rise above backing tracks made with unusual synths and drum machines, and variously indebted to ambient, IDM, ghostly electronica, lo-fi beat-scapes and the gripping intensity of horror soundtracks. A modern electronic classic in the making.

Review: Begun in earnest during the COVID-19 pandemic, after the former had remixed the latter's new Radiohead material, Mark Pritchard and Thom Yorke exchanged much of the for their new record Tall Tales remotely. Forerun by new single 'Back In The Game' then 'This Conversation Is Missing Your Voice', the album takes shape as a surreal mythopoesis, warping back in time to 2020's plague, where the former track's hyperreal music video (dir. by Jonathan Zawada) sees a rooftop figure defenestrating art itself amid grotesque figures bearing the worst of a mutant contortionist slice-of-life. Yorke has said that the album was crucial to him, describing the music-making process as "mental."

Review: New Order's 'The Perfect Kiss' stands out as their first single to be simultaneously released on a studio album, appearing on 1985's Low-Life. Recorded at Britannia Row Studios in London, the track merges alternative dance with rock influences, reflecting themes of love and mortality. Bernard Sumner himself has admitted he's unsure of its full meaning, though one of its most recognised lines - "pretending not to see his gun / I said, 'Let's go out and have some fun'"- was inspired by a real-life encounter with a gun-owning host in the United States. Created in a sleep-deprived rush just before an Australian tour, the song has since been reinterpreted by artists like Capsule Giants and Amoeba Crunch and remixed by collectives such as Razormaid. Spin magazine's John Leland praised its evocative melody and intensity, particularly the explosive finale where the band cranks every machine to full power.

Review: Japanese singer/songwriter/producer Tatsuro Yamashita's latest marks a bold step forward in his ongoing evolution as a musical force, most specifically as a pioneer of the 'city pop' sound. Far from his earlier, more polished pop sensibilities, this release delves into the subtle interplay between soul, jazz and funk, wrapped in lush, sophisticated production. Tracks like 'High Pressure Girl' and 'Merry-Go-Round' reveal a deeper emotional core, where complex arrangements meet timeless melodies. Yamashita's expert use of space and texture pulls you into a world that feels both intimate and expansive, drawing on influences that span from the silky smoothness of 70s soul to the warm grooves of early 80s pop. The work pulses with a sense of nostalgia, yet feels forward-thinking, a bridge between past and present. What stands out here is the transparency of Yamashita's approach to songwritingieach note feels carefully considered and every shift in rhythm deliberate. Tracks like 'Christmas Eve' and 'In the City' carry an understated elegance, as if time itself has slowed down to match the pace of the music. The compositions shift between bright, shimmering highs and deep, reflective lows, creating a dynamic yet cohesive listening experience. The idea is clear: it offers a glimpse into Yamashita's artistry while inviting us to engage with his creative process, blending analog warmth with intricate production techniques that resonate with emotional depth and maintain striking sonic clarity.

Review: Known for his slick guitar work with fusion funk outfit AB's and his influence on Japanese pop, Makoto Matsushita's solo debut First Light returns in a freshly remastered 2025 edition with Warner. A clear lime yellow vinyl matches the mix of traffic light hues on the front cover, and comes sporting an extra remastered clarity. The artist is recaptured at a moment where early session precision meets melodic flair, delivering a smooth, guitar-led ride through an era of crisp J-style production and understated groove.

Review: In the music business the thinking often goes that first week sales are an indicator of a release's popularity and after that it's downhill from there. Occasionally, however, bands or solo artists write tunes with a pan-generational power to connect. Hugely popular Coventry band The Enemy have done that with the title track to this raucous indie guitar cracker of a debut album - originally released in 2007, and going straight to number one in the UK. 'We'll Live And Die In These Towns' has been adopted by the Coventry City football club as their unofficial anthem and is regularly sung with fervor by fans before matches. There's more emotion emanating from the stands when it's sung than the national anthem. It's a song of the people - as important as Billy Bragg's 'A New England'. This track sits as a high point in a tracklist that's no slouch on rabble-rousing hits throughout and it's a reminder of why The Enemy are a national treasure to so many.

Review: Lello Di Franco (LDF) makes a powerful return to Skylax following a sprinting Giro Romalis remix, teaming up with Detroit's Javonntte for 'People From Mars'. The new EP echoes the not entirely capturable original virtue of Detroit house, though we also hear green-skinned ETs laying surreal laser descenders over spiked beats, alienating the style from its motoric origins. 'Saved' also nods to Chicago acid, but its whale-song echoes strip an original croon of its scantness, plunging an invocation to Chi-town into a Europan alien sea. 'Love Anthem', meanwhile, on the flip, provides a pointed swing and exhalatory voice, echoing Omar S with its gritty analogues.

Review: Quasar returns to Skylax Records with Lost Memories EP, diving even deeper into the world of Italian dream house. This 12" release showcases Quasar's ability to capture the nostalgic essence of the early 90s while infusing it with fresh energy. The opening track, Downhill Drive, pulls listeners into its hypnotic rhythm, setting the tone for the journey ahead. Bailo Fine Estate follows, offering a dreamy, sun-soaked vibe that feels like the last moments of summer. Believe Me brings a more introspective, melodic edge, while Voices From the Sea closes things out with a haunting, ethereal atmosphere.

Review: Mansfield new wave band B Movie unearth their long-lost 1982 album Hidden Treasures, more than forty years after they first recorded it for Phonogram, an imprint of Universal. The band were on the same management and signed to the same label as Soft Cell, but their career turned out to be a damp squib by comparison and they split up in the mid-eighties, without ever releasing this great album of synth pop for goths. Taking influences from the likes of Ultravox and The Human League, they cloak it in a more brooding atmosphere, reminiscent of The Chameleons and Joy Divsion - hitting all the right notes along the way, we think.

Review: Mansfield's B-Movie were among a clutch of bands in the early 80s whose members had abandoned their formative thrashy guitar punk influences, and embraced broader, arty, keyboard-laden electronic post-punk. They had a light and catchy, yet brooding Cure-esque hit titled 'Remembrance Day', which shot them up the ranks on the UK gig scene and landed them a record deal. Most of the material they recorded once they got signed was, however, confined to Universal's vaults until very recently because B-Movie had line-up issues that hindered their ability to release an album. Now out of the clutches of contractual obligations, the band have unearthed the album that never was and titled it - quite aptly - Hidden Treasures. Ultimately, they are one of the great 'lost' bands of the early 80s and upon tuning in you can hear that they had in abundance the individuality, style and excellence to have shot them up the charts and made them a household name, had this material been their debut album. Thankfully, they have righted the wrongs of history and they can hold their heads up high forever for having made such brilliant music in their first era.

Well suited for industrious superfans whose psyches elude The Force, and yet still require an audio aid for work or study.

Review: Since the early 2000s, Wagram Music - a French indie label known for a diversity of releases from across the "cool" spectrum of hip-hop, jazz, soul and funk - has conceived many an ingenious studio compilation. This specialism granted them their toehold in the music industry, and would later also confer them their powers in the domains of publishing and "distro". For now, though, we're firmly camped in with the comps, as their breakout feature, Funk Masters, returns for another round. Long charting the backstreet talents of the likes of Odyssey, Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic, and Anita Ward - among a longer list too great to mention in its entirety - this is an unstoppable series. This time we're in ever more wondrous company, as the Masters contrast to 2022's Vintage Sounds, with further brill selections from Bobby Byrd, T-Connection and Isaac Hayes.

Review: Longtime disco editor Smoove played his first cards right with Wack Records in 2007, and now he returns to the imprint after decades with another raw-cut, redone diamond; a synth-driven slab of filth-funk reflecting the talents of 80s soul mogul Bobby on vocals. On the flip, things speed up as Smoove flips Mrs Jackson's vocals into a razor-sharp electro funk rework, loaded with punchy edits, Mantronix-inspired stutters, and warped stabs that twist the track into club-ready territory.

Review: For their inaugural release, London-based Vysyon presents Mercuri: an enchanting EP of enigmatic techno featuring work by Swiss artists Varuna & Mateo Hurtado. Having developed their brand of abyssal club music through releases on Amenthia Recordings & their own imprint A Walking Contradiction, Varuna dive into the void on 'Remote Pulsar'. Driven by a disorientating polyrhythm cloaked in opaque atmospherics, the trio's otherworldly approach to sound design is on full display. By contrast, the pounding 4/4 kick & propulsive acid bass of 'Uvez Echos' entrance the listener into a state of dancefloor reverie. Mateo Hurtado casts his own unique magic over the flip, showcasing his archetypal mystic sound established via an album on Annulled music & remixes for Space Drum Meditation. The mesmerising flute melody of 'An Invisible Fire, Working In Secret' casts a spell of hypnosis, while the flowing, amorphous pads & twisted bass of 'The Eternal Mirror' conjure visions of worlds unknown.

Review: Dubfound’s return is tightly coiled and quietly hallucinatory, tracing crisp patterns through fogged rhythm. ‘Coocooz’ jitters with nervous energy, all micro-detail and negative space, while ‘Feef’ drips in slippery percussion and flattened bass throb. ‘Low’ works a more reduced hypnosis — less hook, more repetition — but it’s the Zendid remix that lands hardest, pulling warm subs and twitchy delay into a loose-limbed swing. As ever with VRNT, the mood sits somewhere between Romanian reduction and Pacific Northwest psychedelia with a vinyl-only tactility that deepens the slipstream. Now based in Moldova, Dubfound has long operated just outside the minimal mainstream, building out a catalogue on labels like Sleep Is Commercial, Nervmusic and Rawax. His own imprints — Swoon, Nurum and Zimotik — favour analogue feel and no-frills groove, often bordering on the abstract. This release fits that mould: heads-down, refined and deceptively emotional in its restraint.

Review: Matti Turunen is no stranger to Vortex Traks as he had previously dropped music here and appeared on the label's very first release and also later as part of Morphology. This, however, is his solo debut and it's a classy exploration of melodic electro. 'Tharsis' kicks off with lithe synths and sheet metal sounds flapping in a stiff cosmic wind. 'Pavonis' is deeper and more heady, 'Arsia' is built on neck-snapping drum patterns and 'Ascraeus' rides on plaintive pads. Last but not least is a collaboration with Dora Gray, 'Daedalia', which is an ambient-laced delight.
