Review: Given his Hot Creations/Hot Natured links, Richy Ahmed is perhaps a surprising choice to mix the latest installment in the CD series from pirate turned blossoming bass empire Rinse FM. Yet, in some ways, it makes perfect sense; the ubiquity of house in bass music clubs, paired with Ahmed's more open-minded approach, make him a good candidate to deliver something different. Predictably, he does just that, combining typically Hot Natured selections (Kim-Ann Foxman, Subb-An, a couple of his own productions), with big cuts from Outboxx (the festival-friendly "Summer Mills"), Demarzo ("Draw The Line", a good example of vintage US house revivalism) and, most surprisingly of all, Danny Tenaglia (vintage Tourism album cut "Read My Lips", from way back in '98).

Review: All of the talk surrounding Ben UFO ahead of the release of his Rinse:16 mix focused squarely on the fact he is a rarity on the contemporary club scene, having built his considerable reputation as a DJ, not a producer. This is wonderfully showcased on a 29-track set that twists, turns, ebbs and flows, with the Hessle Audio chief always thinking one step ahead. Before there is time for the flow to drop into dark, undanceable corners, a sun-kissed curveball - be it the rapid arpeggios of 2562's "Winamp Melodrama" or the saccharine vocals of Champion's "Sensitivity" - is thrown and the mix is yanked in a new, pleasing direction. The upward progression through BPMs is barely perceptible; hardly surprising for someone who makes a living ignoring genre and stylistic restrictions and effortlessly joins the musical dots between modern day London, Bristol and Berlin.

Review: Considering he's been releasing records for the likes of Planet Mu and Apple Pips since 2009, it would be something of an understatement to say that Brackles' debut album has been a long time coming - but it couldn't have been better timed. Although his sound - a rough hybrid of UK garage and funky styles with echoes of dubstep - is very much of the now, there's an obvious love for the classic sounds of 90s UKG which many of his more inexperienced contemporaries lack - assisted by the inspired vocal contributions from Lily McKenzie and Terri Walker. But it's not just a throwback record - be it the slightly offbeat bass and calypso vibe of "Walkin' Out" or the churning subs of "Squarehead", Brackles nevertheless manages to twist the template into weird and unique shapes. That this album has been released on Rinse isn't a surprise - he's encapsulated nearly twenty years of the station's sound into one record.

Review: Since donning the DJ Haus alias in 2012, Unknown To The Unknown founder Rupert Cogan has released a ridiculous amount of material. Given this prolific track record, it's something of a surprise to find that Burnin' Up is his debut album. Appearing on Rinse, the album is a kaleidoscopic tribute to early '90s dance music. Over the ten tracks, he variously doffs a cap to jackin' acid, organ-heavy garage, Inner City, Yorkshire bleep 'n' bass, hardcore, piano house, Chicago trax, Ghetto-house, Belgian Hoover tracks and early Strictly Rhythm. Throw in a few nods to UK garage andJuke, and you've got a kaleidoscopic, retro-futurist set that's enormous fun from start to finish.

Review: Following a series of well received - if frustratingly sporadic - singles on Woofer Music, Family Tree producer Faze Miyake has been given a chance to deliver his debut album on Rinse. The eponymous set perfectly showcases his unique take on grime, where rich melody lines, starry synthesizers and heady chords tussle for prominence with skittish rhythms, sturdy hits and booming basslines. He's helped along the way by an impressive roll call of guest MCs and vocalists, including Little Simz, Sasha Go Hard, Izzy Brooks and the Family Tree collective. It's Inga Copeland, though, who makes the greatest impression, lending some spine tingling vocals to the standout "Ice Cold".

Review: With a discography that spans a wide range of contemporary bass music genres - most notably dubstep, drum and bass and the kind of wonky, experimental post-dubstep heaviness currently in vogue - DJ/producer Icicle is probably the ideal man to mix the latest installment of the well-loved Rinse series. Following a similar pattern to his excellent debut full-length for Shogun Audio (2011's Under The Ice), Rinse 19 characteristically shuffles between hulking basslines, atmospheric rollers and a myriad of beat patterns at a near furious pace. Along the way, he makes room to squeeze in a healthy dose of his own productions, as well as booming tracks from Rockwell, Distance and Youngsta.

Review: On this 22nd installment in the Rinse mix series, Hyperdub boss man Kode 9 gives a no-holds-barred lesson in the joys of percussion. Packing in some 37 tracks along the way, the London producer impeccably joins the dots between the multitude of beat patterns and micro-genres that make up today's thriving bass music scene. There's dubstep (obviously), post-dubstep, footwork (Rustie's mental "Triaddz", a dash of DJ Rashaad, Sam Binga and Addison Groove), ragga-influenced heaviness (The Bug), UK funky, wonky hip-hop (S-Type), synth-laden madness (his own "Kan"), 4/4 bangers (Joy O) and even a touch of Theo Parrish (the excellent "Kites on Pluto"). That it flows brilliantly and all makes sense is testament to his impressive DJ skills.

Review: Given his prolific rise over the last couple of years, it's little surprise to find Roska at the controls of the latest Rinse mix CD. His heavy, floor-friendly take on the current UK underground - a signature sound influenced by broken beat, UK funky, dubstep, classic house and tropical rhythms - is perfectly suited to the former pirate radio station. Furthermore his fast and furious mixing style keeps his sets entertaining, and on this mix, he simply charges through tracks, balancing bangers from T Williams, Redlight, Seiji, Zinc and Magnetic Man with a healthy smattering of his own remixes and productions - and, of course, that pesky "Roska! Roska!" trademark vocal sample.

Review: Southampton-based bass head Mark "Royal T" Taylor has seen his profile rise dramatically in recent times, thanks largely to regular Wednesday night shows on Rinse FM and a production career that seems on the verge of really taking off. Here he drops his debut album, a full-length trawl through his various bass music influences in the company of some of his favourite MCs (and, in the case of one track, producer Roska). His take on dubstep, grime, garage, UK funky and bassline house is formidably floor-friendly, suggesting that a number of these tracks - most notably Dizzee-ish lead cut "Cruel to be Kind" - could crossover into the mainstream.

Review: Given the usual cutting edge style of Rinse's branded mix albums, it's refreshing to hear a volume that looks to the past for inspiration. Mixed by the London Station's resident 'old skool' expert Uncle Dugs, Rinse 20 is designed as a "history of jungle before it became drum and bass". In practice, that means joining the dots between rave-era hardcore and early junglisms. Dugs does a superb job, mixing it up on two turntables - it's a proper one-take mix, as evident by the vinyl rewinds at the start - and giving long overdue airings to some genuinely forgotten, Amen-heavy gems. As a whirlwind history of early British bass music, it's unsurpassed.
