Review: English actor, writer, and musician Matt Berry - of Darkplace and IT Crowd fame - covers, yes, covers an assortment of classic British TV themes. The result is an album to be appreciated as much as it is to be taken seriously, as it is to be enjoyed. Of course there's a pinch of humour with Berry placing himself alongside a muppet and Doctor Who on the album's cover art, but it's the theatrical, jazz and upbeat, yet easy listening approach of the album which really paints the picture. The LP's opener "Are You Being Served" is undeniable sweetest spot of nostalgia here, with the minutia of Thames Television indents, at 8 seconds long, also checked and covered. Recorded solo by Berry himself, it's a burgundy-beige trip through the technicolour memory of one's formative years enjoying the early-evenings and afternoons watching a select choice of the UKs most iconic TV.

Review: The jazz and broken beat revival continues apace as we race through 2019, so original pioneers of the sound are rightly coming back into focus. Enter the Brand New Heavies, one of the key acts of the mid-eighties who sound as good on this brand new album as ever. It's littered with funk-licked pop, crystalline acid jazz and singalong songs that range from tender ballads to soaring soul. Angie Stone, Beverley Knight and other vocalists lend their tones along the way, but importantly TBNH is not a revival or self-satisfied celebration. Review: This long-lost 1973 album from Graham Dee is a fabled record from the man who was a key figure in the 60s London session scene and later a prolific songwriter and producer, and it is now released on vinyl for the first time. Dee was a renowned session guitarist who played with legends like Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck as well as artists such as John Lee Hooker and The Walker Brothers. After working with them, he became an in-house producer for Atlantic Records and honed a distinctive 'British Soul sound.' In the 70s, he moved to the U.S., writing songs and working at the legendary Muscle Shoals. Mr. Super Cool was only rediscovered in 2019 and it's clear to hear Dee's unique talent on a record that offers a fascinating glimpse into early 70s recording.

Review: Ferry Djimmy is quite the character - he is a mysterious Afrobeat figure who also was a former schoolteacher, boxer, Jacques Chirac's bodyguard, and well as being a legendary Beninese musical visionary. He recorded this album sometime in the mid-1970s in support of the revolutionary leader of Benin at the time - Mathieu Kerekou. A fire is reported to have turned all but 200 copies to dust so it is mega rare and expensive to get an original. Acid Jazz reissues it here in all its fiery, lo-fi, gnarly Afrobeat glory. This is a fully licensed project with all new and in-depth sleeve notes by Florent Mazzoleni.

A real Afro-boogie and Afro-funk gem that has been served well by the passage of time, this fully licensed reissue from Acid Jazz has been transferred from the original tapes and remastered by Grammy award-winning engineer Frank Merritt at The Carvery, and is sure to bring the band to a whole new generation of ears. The Benin group deserve it, too, because as well as being historically important, this record sounds great.

Review: Acid Jazz Records are master compilers who here turn their focus once more to Les Sympathics De Porto Novo Benin. It's part of the label's reissues series focussing on rare sounds from legendary Benin imprint Albarika Store and is a second album from one of the most notable groups to hail from Porto Novo'. This 1970s collective, founded by Herman Laleye, is famed for its heavy rhythm section and vocals from Gangbo Bonheur, Armand Pognon playing blues-tinged guitar and Camille Zanou's on the organ. Rather than straight-up Afro-beat, Afro-funk or Latin, this band fused it all seamlessly into something new.

Review: Following on from her recent cover of the legendary house anthem 'Promised Land', Gloria Scott now serves up the full length album it has been taken from. So Wonderful finds the big-lunged vocalist serve up full spectrum of glorious soul tunes. Gloria was discovered by Sly Stone and worked with Barry White as well as Ike and Tina in the Ikettes so has a long history and all that shines through here. There are five originals here as well as her collab with White and it makes for a fine statement of soul from this classic artist.

Review: Nkrumah Jah Thomas is a legendary voice in Jamaican music best known for his influential work as both a DJ and producer through his Midnight Rock label. He has collaborated with notable artists like Anthony Johnson, Early B, King Tubby, and Super Cat. Acid Jazz group label Roots Records, which has worked with Thomas since the late 1990s, now releases his first-ever vocal collection in the form of this album which features 12 essential tracks, including his debut hit 'Midnight Rock,' plus 'Dance Hall Connection,' and 'Dance On The Corner,' as well as his versions of 'Cool Profile' and 'Joker Smoker.' It also includes the 80s dancehall hit 'Dance Inna New York,' sampled by Nas on 'The Don.' Review: Countdown Records was founded by Eddie Piller, Maxine Conroy and Terry Rawlings and captured the essence of the mid-80s Mod revival and New Wave scene while pushing acts like Makin' Time, The Prisoners and The Kick towards mainstream recognition. Despite its innovative approach, the label struggled due to the collapse of Stiff Records and the corporate dominance of the era. However, the label's influence lived on through Piller's Acid Jazz label and this compilation showcases the best of Countdown's legacy with plenty of classic tracks and rarities.
