Review: A new take on a Jonathan Richman classic from 1977 which has lit up clubs for 45-odd years, especially during the punk era. The track's infectious rhythm has inspired various reggae remixes but now it's getting a fresh cumbia twist. Cumbia and reggae share a common groove, making them a perfect match for DJs to mix and this one was recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, who transforms the track into an upbeat cumbia gem. The flip side features Acosta's 'Carnaval de Jujuy' blended with Money Chicha's modern take on Peru's fuzzed-out chicha sound.

Review: Discos Mas kicks off their New Year with a vibrant Los Disco Duro version of the iconic 'Cumbia de Sal'. this top take blends the famous Moog cover with the original 60s version for some super fresh results. Featuring vocoder vocals, brilliantly resonant synths and funky drums, this unique cut enhances the classic cumbia beat with all-new energy. The release also includes a double A-side with a cover of 'Mexico' by the wonderful Mexican Institute of Sound. Camilo Lara's original composition is reimagined with signature Los Disco Duro elements such as vocoder vocals, synths and cumbia percussion, all of which add up to a refreshing mix of modern and traditional rhythms, nostalgia and innovation.

Review: This forthcoming 7" pairs two fiery cuts from the Latin American underground, capturing the raw energy of a transformative musical era. Los Pambele's 'Cannabis' layers cumbia rhythms with swirling, reverb-soaked guitars, creating a trance-inducing groove that feels both earthy and psychedelic. On the flip, Los Darlings de Huanuco's 'Marihuana' cranks up the intensity, delivering a garage-tinged anthem brimming with jagged riffs and spirited vocals. The sound is unpolished yet electrifying, a snapshot of a time when regional traditions collided with bold experimentation, leaving behind something truly timeless.

Review: We really have a soft spot for the Four Flies late out of Italy. Their mix of world, Latin, library, jazz and plenty of other cultured in-between sounds always brings a smile to our face and dancers to our dance floors. This new 7" takes the form of a second single to be taken from Psyche's (aka Naples collective Marcello Giannini, Andrea De Fazio and Paolo Petrella) debut long player which is due in May. It's a compelling cut that offers a rich exploration of rhythm and the movements of an imaginary ritual dance. Synths and drums, guitar and bass and percussion all interplay delightfully.

Review: Fast rising London label Cornerman International present the first volume in a new LP compilation series, the first of which looks in on some of the best Latin cumbia to grace Peru during the genre's golden era. Corralling every bright group star from Los Tigres to Grupo Atlantic to Los Invasores, this is a sure-to-be obscurio's favourite, reflecting the diversity of styles bottleable within the otherwise rhythmic constraint that defines the cumbia sound, as it particularly proliferated across Peru during the 1960s. A convenient fusion with American psych rock elements would define the Peruvian sound, which soon became known as chicha, though other Latin American epicentres such as Colombia were also hotbeds of the style. Notably, the release revives the distinctive sound of El Volcan, a Cusco-based label that became a beacon for cumbia in the Andes and beyond.

Review: Some six years (give or take a few months) on from the release of their superb debut album Psychedelic Disco Cumbia, self-styled 'NYC tropical supergroup' Locobeach are back! This time round, they've treated us to a genuine rarity: a rarely spotted double seven-inch EP. All four tracks have, apparently, been extensively road-tested in their live sets and become, in their words, "fan favourites". They begin in stellar fashion via a head-nodding, cumbia-powered cover of Cure classic 'Close To You' (it's genuinely great - one of the best covers we've heard for a while), before imagining a suitably tropical spy chase on the urgent and percussion-rich 'Idea Desesperada'. On 45 number two you'll find the cheeky cumbia-soul-meets-yacht-rock cheekiness of 'Isabella' and the surf-flecked, high-octane tropical fun of 'U.S Marshall'.

Review: Los Diablos Rojos is the renowned Peruvian cumbia band that has achieved global recognition for its unique tropical sound while defying fleeting trends with enduring appeal. Emerging from CaNete Chico, their distinct instrumental tropical music set them apart from their contemporaries and over the years, they have led a musical trend that continues to gain acclaim. As pioneers, they serve as a benchmark for modern tropical bands with their creativity and resilience and innovative approach that challenges existing norms. Their musical freshness is on full display in Ritmo Satanico, a truly tropical international delight.

Review: Spain's Discos Fantastico deals in Peruvian and Latin American musical archaeology. It has put out a vibrant array of what it describes as "psych cumbia, fuzz killer chicha, rockbeat, boogaloo, nueva ola and boleros" and now joining the great canon is Arrollando Con Alegria by Grupo Alegria - a cumbia band formed in Huancayo, Peru in the late 1970s and led by Augusto Bernardillo - which has hints of all those sounds and more. It is a classic for world music lovers that was related back in 1983 in Peru and will cost you a few quid if you are to find an original copy.

Review: Candeleros is a six-member, Colombia- and Venezuela-rooted collective based in Madrid that fuse Cumbia, merengue, dub and an array of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, creating a psychedelic, postmodern celebration of Latin sound. Their music blends Andean echoes, cinematic textures and hypnotic percussion into what feels like a ritualistic dance experience and has seen them collaborating with artists like Dodosound and Carlos Talez. They always reject the usual genre boundaries while focusing on cultural activism and the power of collective expression and have performed across Europe. As this album shows, their sound is passionate, borderless and proof that Cumbia has truly rooted itself in Europe.
