Review: Adam Beyer's Drumcode certainly have an identity; their records are meant for big systems, head heavy beats and rumbling basslines (think Room 2 in fabric and you'll see where we're going with this). Their latest output from Slam, entitled "Crowded Room", is no exception. It's rapid and stomping from its offset, with techno staples creeping from dark corners, coming to play and then scuttling away again. Flipping over to the B-Side and Slam offer up "Night Train"; an old sampled train sound was their inspiration, and they use it to tell their story and capture our attention. On the right system, in the right place and with the right crowd, this is techno at its peak.

Review: Since launching last year, Beneath's Mistry imprint has done an impressive job joining the dots between techno and bass music, delivering killer material low-end from Batu, Laksa and Alex Coulton - amongst others - along the way. Here he changes tack, eschewing industry friends and contacts in order to deliver a debut EP from the previously unknown Gaunt. There are four no-nonsense dancefloor weapons to choose from. Naturally, there's much to admire, from the surging, chopped-up drum machine hits of "Crowd Noise" - think fizzing cymbals, bubbling electronics and subtle African percussion - to the freaky alien funk of "JP". Best of all, though, are the mangled dialing tones, surging sub bass, brain-melting hits and dense, broken rhythms of "MMRH".

Review: Veteran maverick Elbee Bad pops up in ever-unpredictable places, but somehow he sounds just right on Thema. His fearless, deeply rooted take on house music defies imitation, and so it goes across this full-fat EP. "Request Monster" is a lazy groove embellished with strings protesting the culture of requests in the club, while "A Lot Of Jazz As A Child" doffs its cap to Sun Ra in a subtle way that manages to be both mechanical and free-flowing. "If EYE Was From The D" is a more overtly electronic production that sits somewhere in between acid, techno and deep house. "Crossing Dimensions" is an uplifting workout with a sweet vocal turn from an unknown source, and then "Jami Jam Dubb'd" finishes the record off with a primal set of ingredients working round a stout kick.

Review: Hailing from Copenhagen, techno duo Northern Structures have a clear vision in mind when they turn out their releases. Theirs is a tough but unfussy kind of techno, minimal in principle but communicated through sturdy rhythms and enveloping tones of a distinctly chilly nature. "Eastern Bridge" is all kick and drone, using the simple approach as an opportunity to let the subtleties of the sound design shine through. This is far from laborious music though, as tracks take on more baggage as they go. "Eastern Structure" for example comes to life when the minor key chord stabs come skulking in. "Northern Structure" has fun with its bleep undertones, as though Neil Landstrumm were letting his battered machines take a breather, but "Northern Bridge" soon cools off the techno heat with another chilly stomper.

Review: Shifted's identity has remained somewhat of a mystery in 2012, but crucially, he does not come from the small coterie that has dominated UK techno over the past twenty years. Like the signature image he uses, a grey, shadowy creature creeping through a snowy forest, his infiltration of the sound has been stealthy and understated. In many ways, his lack of connection with techno, his automatic outsider status, has allowed him to effect an entrance into a hitherto new terrain. Like his releases on Mote Evolver and his own Avian imprint, Crossed Paths tingles and fizzes with an atmospheric sensibility that monochrome techno often lacks. All of this is made possible by his distinctive sound design; intricate and subtle, yet at the same time both functional and multi-faceted, where all of these divergent paths cross, you'll find Shifted.
