Scaling Triangles

Punk/Hardcore
Review: Scaling Triangles is a curious early 80s DIY oddity, serving up a three-way split between experimental synth-punk outfit Petticoats, the equally motorik coldwave post-punk of Sub Verse, and the Tangerine Dream indebted synth-prog of Sole Sister. All female groups, all overlooked and largely forgotten to time, this 1981 gem captures the sonic and creative expansion that saw the parameters of genres being torn down almost as quickly as they were being established during those formative years; providing a uniquely raw, underground, tangible piece of electronic/post-punk fusion and fearlessness.

Review: Jeff Mills throws a spaghettifying curveball with latest EP 'The Trip'. Themed after the terrifying notion of entering a black hole, and likening this to the vicarious yet no less enjoyable illusions of grandeur that might go hand in hand with attending a Millsart rave, 'The Trip' has been routinely billed as "the world's first cosmic opera" (in its performance incarnation), and attempts to sonically answer the question as to what exactly happens when we cross that fateful event horizon, in ambitious, live-jam-born-recorded form. Via eight cosmic suites of terrifying techno wizardry (we'd expect nothing less from the Belleville 'blazer), Jeff Mills brings his originally live, light-eating vision to vinyl, nailing the cosmick perceptual horror of being "sucked in" through dust-bitten repetitions, descending mind-melts and dissociative-detuned fugues - the latter is most intriguing; 'When Time Stops' is the track of choice for exploring Mills' least repetitious and most improvisatory tendencies.

Review: Olivia Rodrigo's Guts: Spilled arrives now as a special deluxe edition and it is a poignant reflection of youthful vulnerability and raw emotion. Building upon the success of her debut record which was a breakthrough success, Rodrigo offers listeners an expanded collection of tracks that delve deeper into themes of heartache, self-discovery, and resilience. With her powerful vocals and candid songwriting, she navigates the complexities of love and loss with authenticity and grace. Review: A decade ago, Leon Vynehall popped up on Martyn's 3024 label with Music For The Uninvited, a critically acclaimed debut album inspired by 'the formative cassette mixtapes' of his youth. This anniversary edition, which boasts reworked artwork and freshly re-mastered sounds, proves that the album has lost none of its allure. Musically, it offers a largely bass-heavy blend of deep house, Afro-house and techno rhythms, futuristic electronic instrumentation, immersive pads, sinewy strings and emotional resonance by the bucketload. This time round, we also get two bonus cuts, both of which were recorded during the same period in 2013: the Theo Parrish-esque excellence of 'Peaces' and the deep, jazzy and sample-rich broken house lusciousness of 'Blue'.

Review: The Alternative Germ-Free Adolescents offers up a compilation of early demos and alternative studio takes of tracks from the seminal 1978 debut LP from London new wave punk heroes X Ray Spex. Featuring studio recordings from between 1977 to 1978, as half of the original album's cuts came from early singles and B-sides to begin with, the collection also comes stacked with soundboard lifted live performances from The Roxy in Los Angeles, while closer to home the Peel Sessions capture endlessly enigmatic frontwoman Poly Styrene at the dawn of her frenetic prowess; rawer, more energetic and infectious than any mere words can do justice.

Review: From Then 'Til Now marks Roots Architects' debut full-length album, a monumental project bringing together over 50 of Jamaica's most iconic session musicians. Spanning from the birth of reggae in the late 1960s to the present day, the album is a celebration of the unsung heroes of reggae music: the rhythm builders or Roots Architects. Conceived by Swiss keyboardist and producer Mathias Liengme, the album is the culmination of years of dedication to honoring Jamaica's musical legacy. Liengme's journey began in 2013 with "The Inspirators" project, leading to his immersion in Kingston's studio scene and the eventual formation of Roots Architects. Recorded in Kingston studios over February and March 2017, the album features a stellar lineup of veteran musicians aged 60 to 85, including legends like Robbie Lyn, Fil Callender, and Dalton Browne. Together, these Roots Architects revive the spirit of reggae, creating nine instrumental tracks that pay homage to their enduring legacy and timeless artistry.

Hibbert's production expertise shines through, creating a seamless blend of classic reggae sound with subtle dub elements. The album's strength lies in its ability to breathe new life into familiar classics while maintaining the integrity of the originals. Review: Reggie Dokes, the legendary deep house and techno DJ/producer from Atlanta, Georgia, has finally released his highly expected Vault Volume 1. Originally released in 2005 as a CDR-only, this extended pressing allows fans to experience the magic of Dokes' music on a whole new level. With its captivating blend of jazz, techno, and house, the album takes listeners on a sonic journey through Dokes' unique musical landscape. 'My Peeps On 6' sets the tone with its smooth, deep house vibes, while 'Make Believe' transports listeners to a spacey, funk-infused post-apocalyptic realm. The beautiful 'Love Reigns' provides a moment of respite with its gentle bell chimes and bedtime melody, before 'D-Funk' drops a heavy bass kick and dystopian atmosphere. The album closes with the aptly named 'Freakazoid,' an explosive track that leaves listeners begging for more. Dokes' expertise in crafting atmospheric and emotive soundscapes is clear throughout the album. His ability to fuse elements of jazz, techno, and house creates a unique and immersive experience that will appeal to fans of all genres.

Review: On their second album Desperado, the Eagles went deep into the idea of the American Wild West. With their country twang, Glenn Frey and Don Henley's songs were already cowboy-friendly, but this album took the concept further. Released in 1973, it captures everything you love about the Eagles from shit-kickin' rock n' roll like 'Out of Control' facing off with sentimental classic 'Tequila Sunrise'. After all this time it's the title track which remains one of the band's most beloved songs - everything a lonesome man on the prairie needs to hear after a hard day and a hoedown.

Review: Subheim's latest offering, Raeon is a mesmerizing collection of eight tracks that delve deep into moody, lo-fi territory. Building on the sonic landscape he began exploring with Foray in 2015, Subheim strips away percussive elements in favor of space, ambience, and melody. Each composition feels like a fleeting memory, unfolding and dissolving into echoing nothingness, much like the passing lights of a train or a distant melody heard in a dream. Despite its lack of percussion, Raeon maintains a sense of movement and harmony, with each track contributing to an open-ended narrative of stillness and motion, darkness and light. Filled with bittersweet hopefulness and a longing for new beginnings, Raeon seamlessly blends nostalgic synthesised sounds with neoclassical elements, striking a delicate balance between past and future, melancholy and anticipation. Subheim is remarkable at storytelling in his music.

Review: Berlin-based, Canada-born experimenter Aidan Baker tinkers often with slowcore, drone, and avant-garde darkness, both solo and with such groups as Nadja, Hypnodrone Ensemble and WERL. His latest, Songs Of Undoing, aims at more of a "deconstructed" grunge/slowcore palette, stripping almost every facet of the style back to reveal an impressively unpolished backbone. Musings on reckoning, alienation, and ruination resound across an album of doomy quietude - never going so far as to indulge huge cathartic moments and instead preferring to rest in waveringly gothic, ruminatory recesses.

Review: The amusingly named Lebanese free improvisation trio A Trio, formed in 2002 by Mazen Kerbaj Sharif Sehnaoui and Raed Yassin, are considered by some to be the oldest and most active free improv group in the Arab world. With such status comes ever-more impetus to release new music; The Binding Third is their first full-length LP since 2014, recorded live at the Sound Disobedience Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2019. Composed of two long-form pieces, we hear the trumpeter, reed player and double bassist respectively make use of extended and prepared techniques, in turn to create dizzying drones, textures, and noises that challenge the conventional roles of their instruments. The music is intense, dynamic, and unpredictable, reflecting the trio's 20+ years of experience and experimentation.

Review: Steely Dan's fourth studio album 'Katy Lied' was their 1975 standout moment, capturing a moment in time when the band had gained plenty of traction, and had already ridden the wave of fame for a good time. As a result, their music had grown in creativity and grandeur, expanding outwards from a mere prog rock outfit into a studio project, necessitating a steady stream of session musicians, highest-fidelity gear and lots of money. As ever, infectious guitar hooks and R&B funk structures make up most tracks here, making this an early party rock album if we've ever heard one. Katy may be a love interest or a sumptuous muse - but the title also alludes to a katydid, a species of insect related to grasshoppers or crickets.

Review: Steely Dan's latest reissue campaign spans many classic albums, including their fourth LP Katy Lied, but here we focus on The Royal Scam, their fifth. Once more produced by in-house maestro Gary Katz, and again a grand and sprawling recording project with tens of contributors and credits, the album deals thematically with the loose story of Owsley Stanley, the psychedelic drug kingpin and father of the modern soundsystem. Compared to their previous projects, The Royal Scam was known for its more paranoid and intense sound.

Since then, the information has been trickling out with the steady precision we expect from one of pop's biggest stars, and finally we can clutch Midnights. An album steeped in concept and supposedly drawing from 13 different sleepless nights from throughout Swift's life, it's a reflection on those strange places we go in ourselves when we choose to burn the midnight oil, crafted alongside her steadfast producer Jack Antonoff. There are a variety of editions of this highly anticipated record, and this Lavender pressing is sure to be one of the most coveted.

Review: The last ten years have seen no shortage of bands with their delay pedals set to stun intent on capturing an aura of dreamlike radiance. Yet Texas 'pop-noir' troupe Cigarettes After Sex are no ordinary shoegazers, for a variety of reasons - frontman Greg Gonzalez' androgynous and dulcet tones may be part of the appeal, yet moreover it's the quality of the songwriting here, which never falls prey to the style-over-substance traps of their peers. Indeed, this debut is more than enough to justify the considerable hype around this outfit, being a collection of ditties as sultry as they are atmopsheric.

Review: Folklore was a surprise album from American singing sensation Taylor Swift, who only 11 months previously put out Lover. The record makes a big departure from the sounds she is mostly associated with - namely upbeat pop - in favour of a more mature and considered indie folk, alt rock and chamber pop sound. Written and recorded in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, the record rightfully got widespread critical acclaim for its song writing, emotive weight and soothing sound overall. Amazing for a shock, leftfield release from a pop superstar, all 16 tracks from Folklore entered the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously,

Review: "In Rainbows", Radiohead's seventh album, finally gets a physical release! It's one thing downloading this landmark album, but to actually hold this is something special. Not only do you get increased sound quality, but you also get the amazing artwork from Stanley Donwood. This album includes "Nude", a live favourite for many years that was originally written during the "OK Computer" sessions. More minimal that their "Kid A" period, "In Rainbows" does something that very few albums have done - its sound is distinct from previous Radiohead albums, but is still clearly Radiohead. Hail to the kings, they are back on top form.

Review: There's a chance this Liverpudlian four piece will be familiar by now. This, their 11th studio outing, first unveiled as the 1960s slipped into the 70s, is a bonafide epic from an outfit that weren't lacking in epics; in many ways a culmination of their time together, marking the end of their active years and beginning of their legacy. By this stage, then, they've emerged from years spent on the inner journey and time on the outer, space cadeting to the hallucinogenic fuelled tones of "Sgt. Peppers" and "Revolver". Of course, there's still plenty of explorations happening, but the gritty blues rock of opening track "Come Together" really sets the tone. Five decades on, it still sounds great and maybe even better than you remember. Even if you own the original, this anniversary edition is worth having.

Review: In line with the timely reappraisal of all things R&S related, the resurgent Apollo have seen the opportunity to bring one of their most celebrated records back for another round. Aphex Twin's ambient recordings mature magnificently with age, sounding ever richer and more emotive as the rest of electronic music continues to play catch up all around. From the gentle breakbeats of "Xtal" to the aquatic techno lure of "Tha", the airy rave of "Pulsewidth" to the heartwrenching composition of "Ageispolis", every track is a perennial example of how far ambient techno could reach even back then. It's just that no-one quite had the arm-span of Richard D. James.

Review: Reissued via French label Rotorelief on its 35th Anniversary year, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella is the debut album of trailblazing noise and avant-garde musician Steven Stapleton. Catapulting Stapleton's macabre alias to success in the thin breath of just three through-composed drone pieces, this sonic statement was unparalleled at the time (1979), with its unusual mix of prepared tinkerings, feedback drones and cog-jams famously causing Sounds magazine to momentarily abandon their five-star rating system to specially award the album five full question marks. Absurdly sadistic, the album is also known for its original publication of the infamous Nurse With Wound List in the liner notes, which listed the entirety of Stapleton's influences going into the album's making - some acts named therein were so obscure that many fans speculate as to whether they were invented. An exemplary work of outsider music - or at least, one that is infamous by proxy to the more baneful works of the outsider music archetype - get ready to hear all things spectral over the more sustained tones: chains rattling, chairs squeaking, shakers shaking, even monologues in French.

Review: Now announcing her latest album 30, it's been Adele's longest ever hiatus between albums. Biting back at media hype earlier this year, our worries that 30 would be a "drum and bass record to spite you", in Adele's own words, have been assuaged; its lead single 'Easy On Me' is rather a dramatic, roomy, noir piano ballad. And now that the tracklist has been revealed, we can expect more of the same - belting emotion is, of course, what Adele does best. Watch out for interluding and ending collabs with Erroll Garner and Chris Stapleton, as well as the intimately titled 'I Drink Wine'.

Review: Twenty years ago it sounded like an oddly poignant evocation of pre-millennial tension. Two decades later it stands as an eerily prescient glimpe into the technological alienation and dislocation of of a new era. Yet more importantly, OK Computer is no more or less than a sparkling, dramatic and moving collection of songs that haven't lost any of their impact in the interim. The sound of a band stubbornly refusing to follow up the stadium-strafing stylings of its predecessor The Bends - and instead bursting headlong into experimentation and wild creativity -is portrayed in still more vivid colours by the alarmingly strong collection of out-takes and B-sides collected herein, Yet there's no getting away from the chill and spark that marked out OK Computer from everything surrounding it in the post-Britpop malaise, and continues to do so in the pre-Brexit counterpart.

Review: It looks like Damien Chazelle, the young, impressive director of Whiplash and the more recent La La Land, likes to surround himself with equally talented youngsters. For the latter film, he's chosen Justin Hurwitz to compose the score for his successful musical featuring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, and we have to say that this is a real keeper. There's a bit of everything in here, a little vintage pop, some classical elements here and there, but jazz is what's at the core of this original score, and that's why we think it's great. What's more, you can listen to Gosling and Stone sing on your turntables. Check it out.

Review: Mad About Records officially reissues super rare private press Quintessence's 1981 LP. Surprisingly for the level of talent and production / recording wit that it flaunts, Quintessence was one of many original jazz LPs to remain in private circulation and thus completely wanting of the public ear. Led by Ron Ancrum, with George Sovak, David Gaedeke, Winston Johnson and Steve Muse, the band nonetheless recorded an exceptional slice of artistic pie here, bringing Rhodesy, tritoning sundowners to the then already well-fleshed milieu of 80s jazz, an unmistakably bulbous and gaudy sound to which Quintessence do much justice; our favourite here by far is 'In My Apartment', a tssking blue-jazz suite for boughed double bass and noir piano.

Review: In 2015, Texas & London-based trio Khruangbin's debut album 'The Universe Smiles Upon You' garnered wide critical acclaim and captured attention for its seamless genre-blending and internationally shaped sound - one that evidently has deep roots in Thai-funk cassette culture. Similarly to their debut, sophomore record 'Con Todo El Mundo' is a cocktail of largely instrumental surf-rock, afro-funk, middle-eastern and far-eastern influences, mixed with warmth and soul. As if their pallette wasn't diverse enough, the additions of the pared back boogie on 'Evan Finds The Third Room', the widescreen dream-pop of 'A Hymn' and deeply intricate writing of closer 'Friday Morning', are illustrative of a band who have worked hard to broaden their horizons while keeping their roots in mind and, despite transatlantic bases, clearly remain a stunningly cohesive and well-matched outfit.

Review: Terry Hall's album Home is the archetypal sound of gentle mid-90s pop rock, which is when it was released on Anxious. It was Hall's first solo record and spawned singles 'Forever J' and 'Sense', while much of the album was written with guitarist Craig Gannon and includes features with then-acclaimed musicians such as Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds. As such, there are plenty of big jangly guitars, soaring and tender vocal deliveries and post-baggy grooves that might well still get festival crowds swaying along without a care in the world.

After a pre-release campaign that took on Hollywood-esque proportions, French pair Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter return as Daft Punk with their fourth studio album Random Access Memories sporting a A-list cast of guests and contributors. Given the input of disco icons Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rogers it's entirely understandable that the overbearing sound on Random Access Memories is one of classic disco with lead single "Get Lucky" a good indicator for what to expect. There's also a smattering of yacht rock within the thirteen track set, whilst the ubiquitous Panda Bear turns up on the midnight stutter funk album highlight "Doin' It Right". Those expecting a return to Daft Punk's Homework heyday will be disappointed but Bangalter and de Homem-Christo are touching forty so the polished, expertly constructed disco direction makes perfect sense.

Review: Contemporary indie icon St. Vincent's (Anne Erin Clark's) seventh full-length record All Born Screaming follows up 2021's The Nowhere Inn, and contrasts to that record with its intense introspective plunging of the personal depths, to find what Clark deemed her own sonic vocabulary. Arriving at a distinction she dubbed 'post-plague pop', All Born Screaming centres on a crooked and menacing sound with a reckless spirit, with lead cuts like 'Broken Man' giving raw Knife-like instrumentation and masc monarchic ironies on the lyrics, as if to suggest a significant patriarchal downfall to come. That line is said to be representative of the album's mood as a whole; "that lustre and swagger that you feel right before things go terribly wrong!"

Review: Four new originals from French Berlin-based singer and JD Stella Zekri, whose low-range, buzzing vocals are lent happily to a selection of cloudy electronic Latin beats. Produced and co-written by Ed Longo, it draws heavily on the post-zouk and disco styles endemic to the 80s French underground; our choice bit is the offbeat boogizm heard on the sonic ponderance: 'Pourquoi (Why)'.

Greatest hits in the late Camden-native's catalogue played live with a 6 piece band, 16 classics like 'Tears dry on their own' and 'Back to black' from her 2 albums are pressed on this double LP. The latter performance being watched on YouTube almost 8 million times, the raw vocals are incredible and a reminder of what made Amy Winehouse the legend that she is. Review: The Cowboy Bebop was an anime series that was much loved for its soundtrack albums by Japanese composer and instrumentalist Yoko Kanno and his band the Seatbelts. The sounds were weird and wonderful affairs that made odd connections between seemingly disparate worlds - jazz, rock, J-pop and electronic, often with a curious aesthetic. Just this year, Kanno has returned to soundtracking the series on Netflix so this reissue is sure to connect with fans old and new. It is largely instrumental, with big band pieces next to more ambient passages and extensive alto sax deployment. As far as cult records go, this one is right up there.

Review: From the early 1970s, Tim Maia released a string of superb albums that cemented his reputation as Brazilian music's most soulful artist - a guitarist and singer who created thrilling new musical hybrids that owed as much to U.S funk and soul as samba, bossa-nova and MPB. 1975's "Racional Volume 2", a hard-to-find set that's finally been reissued, is one of the best of Maia's key early albums. Rhythmically, the majority of the tracks feature typically shuffling South American rhythms, but the instrumentation and vocals above are far closer in tone to the sunnier, more horn-heavy end of the soul and funk spectrum (with some sweeping orchestration thrown in to add a touch of MPB class). It's a brilliant blend that guarantees good times from start to finish.

Review: Jules Buckley can do absolutely no wrong in our eyes. The conductor responsible for leading the globally revered Heritage Orchestra has made a name for himself experimenting with the limits and limitless potential of classical music, taking influences from the world of dance and club tunes to open up orchestral performances to new demographics and generations.

He also has the honour of heading up the BBC Symphony Orchestra at select performances, another of the world's finest ensembles. This is just one recording from one of those shows, but clearly proves there's genius at work. The same could be said for Paul Weller, the iconic UK guitarist and singer who here invites said players to rethink tracks from his back catalogue for a staggering 75-minute set that elevates the rocker's oeuvre to greater heights than ever before.

Review: There's a reason that Massive Attack's Blue Lines frequently appears in "greatest albums" lists. To put it simply, it's brilliant, and arguably remains the Bristol-based outfit's finest work to date (though some would argue that the dark and paranoid Mezzanine is possibly better). As this weighty vinyl reissue proves, it's lost none of its hazy, dub-propelled trip-hop charm. All-time classics such as "Unfinished Sympathy", "Safe From Harm" and "Hymn of the Big Wheel" have lost none of their soulful, mood-enhancing brilliance, while lesser celebrated cuts such as "Five Man Army" and "Lately" still sound great despite their vintage.

By now, most will have already heard it, but for the uninitiated "Jesus Is King" sees West meditating on Christianity, offering up a tight 27-minute set of tracks that draw influence from (or explicitly sample) gospel music in all its forms. It's still a hip-hop album of course, it's just that the beats, musical choices (gospel choirs, loops from killer records by gospel soul act The Whole Truth etc) and lyrics are closer to the black American gospel tradition than anything West has released before.

Review: As fast-rising underground stars in their own right, you'd expect any collaborative album from soul-fired South London singer/songwriter/beat-maker Tom Misch and prolific jazz drummer Yussef Dayes (best known for his now long-running collaboration with Kamaal Williams) to be rather good. "What Kinda Music" is, with the pair mixing and mangling elements of soul, jazz-funk, electronica and jazz, a set that defies easy categorisation. Both musicians exceed themselves throughout, with tipsy electronics, sweeping strings, bass, effects-laden guitars, woozy synth lines and Misch's heartfelt, soul-flecked vocals offering a perfect foil for Dayes' loose-limbed, headline-grabbing drumming.

One of the most defining records of what was known for better or worse as IDM still sounds as timeless as it did in 1998, as the library tones of "Wildlife Analysis", thick downtempo rhythms of "Roygbiv" and out of focus melodies of "Olson" prove. Essential!

Review: French jazz-fusion act Cortex's 1975 debut album Troupeau Bleu has long been in demand amongst record collectors and dusty-fingered DJs, not least because it's14 tracks contain all manner of killer drum breaks, fast-fingered electric piano solos, surprise 1970s synth sounds and nods aplenty to French lounge music. As this essential Trad Vibe issue proves, the album is every bit as good as you'd expect, with floor-friendly jazz-funk freak-outs sitting side by side with samba workouts, laidback jams of the kind associated with Bob James, piano jazz interludes, jazz-rock slam-downs and much more besides. Basically, it's the kind of freewheeling but impeccably produced set that deserves a place in any jazz-funk fan's record collection.

Review: Burnski's Instinct alias has given rise to two full-length albums and a swathe of EPs in just the past two years alone, and now he's heralding spring with the launch of a new label, Abyla, and his most delicate, ambient record to date. Happening is a far cry from what you might know of Burnski or indeed the Instinct project overall, focusing as it does on orchestral ambience with a preference for plaintive piano lines at the front of the mix and ample drone matter backing it up. These short vignettes glide between moods, hovering in moments of tender minimalism or bursting with effervescence depending on the situation.

Review: Although born and raised in Holland, the duo behind the Yin Yin project "make music for an imaginary tropical Island" based "somewhere between the Netherlands and South East Asia". It's an apt description of their undeniably humid, wide-eyed style, which variously combines elements of surf-rock, dub, psychedelia, ambient, electronica, spaced-out synth-pop and various traditional South East Asian musical tropes. It's a style that makes this long promised debut album a unique, distinctive and hugely vibrant listening experience. While inventive and colourful, their music is also largely dancefloor friendly and highly addictive. In other words, this is one debut album that's well worth picking up.

Review: Blue Note are on a reissuing roll, not shying from revisiting the work of their most treasured jazz acts this year. The latest in their Classic Editions comes by way of Donald Byrd, whose timeless 1975 album Places And Spaces documents the trumpeter's fearless jazz-funk fusion era. This being Blue Note, you can expect only the best rendition of this orchestral jazz-funk suite that a vinyl pressing has to offer. This version is an all-analog remaster, by legendary cutting engineer Kevin Gray, from the original tapes. Expect a thorough justice-doing of the hits, 'Dominoes' and 'Wind Parade', which boast production credits from the infamous Larry Mizell.

Review: Pop duo Josh Lloyd-Watson & Tom McFarland, or simply J & T as they are known, realise their second album for pioneering independent label, XL. Since the pair's debut self-titled release back in 2013 the group has expanded to something around seven members and following a slew of singles and EPs (inclusive of a Soulwax remix) the band are now bursting with fresh life and colour. Take "Heavy, California" for example, a sing-a-long pop number that's bright and cheery enough to make you want to skip through the streets with a dandelion in your hair regardless of the season. "Cherry", the other track thrown around online, sees Jungle live up to their Neo Soul genre tag, and with 11 more tracks to explore, maybe they'll even find hit that second Mercury Prize nomination.

Review: American hard rock band Guns N Roses are one of the most iconic to ever do it. Their Greatest Hits album is jam packed with smash hit after smash hit. Released by Geffen Records in part because of the delay in the making of Chinese Democracy, it came in 2004 amidst some infamous legal challenges from Axl Rose and former band members who weren't too pleased with its tracklisting. It got no promotion as a result but still topped the UK Albums Chart and no wonder with 'Sweet Child O Mine', 'Welcome to the Jungle' and 'Paradise City' all featuring amongst plenty more.

Review: American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey's seventh album Chemtrails Over the Country Club features a cover of Joni Mitchell's 1970 song 'For Free' but otherwise features lyrics that pertain to her "stunning girlfriends" and "beautiful siblings." The sound of the record is therefore more airy and sunny, expansive and less claustrophobic that previous works. This lighter sound suits her - not that previous album aren't also essential - with an emotional innocence and vulnerability shining through each song. Folky, nuanced and atmospheric, this might be one of Del Ray's best yet.

Review: There are a whole host of My Bloody Valentine reissues landing at the moment after the band was signed by Domino. It all came digitally last year and now the physical release get some tidy sonic treatment and pressed to heavyweight vinyl. If you're reading this, you will already known that the band which is made up of Bilinda Butcher, Kevin Shields, Deb Googe and Colm o Ciosoig are quote possibly one of the most influential groups of the last four decades. Their second album Loveless came in 1991 and took big leaps forward from their debut in 1988. It's an album that still overwhelms your sense even today.

Review: You can trust Music On Vinyl to put out the very best soundtracks, from the least likely sources. That Blade Runner soundtrack reissue a few years back was an absolute treat for us, to cite an example, but this edition of the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack is even more leftfield. After all, it's no surprise because the film had an insanely on-point score that never made it onto vinyl format; songs from the likes of John Adams, Giorgio Moroder and Franco Battiato are a wonderful thing to own on wax, within the concept of this remarkable movie, alongside other great tunes from coveted producers like Japan's Ryuichi Sakamoto. All in all, a fine catch.
