Review: A new standard black 5xLP box set to complement an alternate bicoloured deluxe version; The American Analog Set's formative first three albums - The Fun Of Watching Fireworks, From Our Living Room To Yours, and The Golden Band - are here gathered together under the name New Drifters, making up a great account of experimental breadth of the late 1990s Texas scene, and its utlimate expression in the work of this fivesome set of slowcorers. We hear a long take, as the band deliver a slow burning power-of-three for local monopolist Emperor Jones, all while quelling the thrums of fin-de-siecle angst by way of soft-sung tenors, emo catharses and sawn-off math rhythms. Notably but disputably described as "sloth kraut", there's a sepia-toned feel to the whole thing, but it's anything but lethargic; rather, it's beautiful. Remastered from the original analog tapes, this early-career spanning 5xLP box includes lyrics, photos and ephemera from the before times.

Notes: Expandoor

The Expandoor gets you quickly and simply using AMP's Melody Oracle, Star Song, or Touch Tones (as well as other possible future devices) as a CV and Gate controller. It outputs Eurorack-compatible CV and GATE signals, transforming your AMP device into a versatile and novel modular synth sequencer or controller. The Expandoor can be used as a standalone tabletop box, or mounted in a 3U 10HP rack space.

Three independent GATE outputs:

Just as the three "Register" zones on your AMP device gate the audio for the three octaves of the built-in synthesizer, there are three corresponding gate outputs on the Expandoor. The 1/8" jacks labelled "BS" "LH" and "RH" output ~11V DC gate signals whenever those zones are gating "ON" on your AMP device.

CV output, tuners and LED indicators:

The jack labelled "CV" outputs a tuned set of CV values (0-11V), tuned independently but correspondingly, to the set of tuners on your AMP device. The row of multi-turn tuners on the front panel allow fine tuning of each CV state. One tuner is active at a time, depending on the state of the "INTERVAL" zones on your AMP device. The active tuner is conveniently indicated in real time via lights found to the right of the tuners. The indicator lights serve a second function of showing you which tuner on the controlling AMP device is also active in parallel.

AMP LINK jacks

The AMP LINK jack on the bottom left of the front panel (with the arrow pointing IN) connects your controlling AMP device into the EXPANDOOR. Use only shielded CAT 5 or CAT 6 cables and connectors (the correct cables will have metal end connectors). The AMP LINK jack on the right outputs a signal identical to the input, allowing chaining of multiple Expandoors and/or Wave Expanders. Do not plug more than one AMP controlling device into a single Expandoor simultaneously, or damage to the devices could occur.

Each controlling device requires its own Expandoor or Wave Exapnder, but multiple expansion modules can be chained from one controlling device. One potential benefit to chaining expansion modules is the ability to output multiple tuned, corresponding but independent, CV channels. Meaning multiple sets of harmonic values could be tuned and accessed at the command of the single controlling AMP device, or accessed via other modules in your system.

This synth has been given a large and diverse number of controls, that along side the patch sockets, will give even the best and experienced synthesist endless possibilities.

This synth presents the controls in a user friendly and familiar synth layout that, together with this manual and other resources, enable even the new guy to get great sounds.

Synth - Percussion - Audio Processor

Ample is a compact analogue synthesizer. Analogue - as in really analogue. Aside from the MIDI chip (which has to be digital), everything else is totally analogue using real transistors and op-amps. There are no CPU stabilised and quantised circuits, no DCOs, no digital LFOs and no digital EGs, as found on other so called analogue synths. The circuitry is based on designs dating back to the mid-1970s. So Ample has a genuine old sound.

3x Analogue Oscillators

There are three analogue VCOs - each providing a wealth of features and modulation choices. VCO3 can easily be utilised as a LFO.

2x Analogue Low Frequency Oscillator

LFO2(/Sync) has a triangle wave output. VCO3 can be used as an LFO and has Saw, Triangle and Square wave modulation signals.

Analogue Filter

Ample uses a four pole 24bB per octave low pass filter.

Analogue Amplifier

The VCA can be set to THRU so it is always 'open'. This allows Ample to be used as an effects processor.

2x Analogue Envelopes

There are two EGs - each having full control over ATTACK, DECAY, SUSTAIN, and RELEASE.

Modulation

Great thought has been placed into modulation route choices, allowing a wide range of sounds to be produced, including percussion and 'modular' sounds further extended by patching with the jack sockets and pin matrix.

MIDI

MIDI is intentionally kept simple - so you can concentrate on making new sounds and making music - not getting tied up with SYSEX programming.

You get the all important control over filter cut-off using MIDI Velocity.

Patchable External CV Control Sockets

Ample has many input and output audio and CV sockets - to allow the synth to be effectively re-wired to make new sounds.

The sockets also enable it to be easily used with Eurorack and other modular systems. They can be patched together.

Sequencer

Ample has a vintage style 16 step sequencer.

Touch Keys

There are 6 touch keys that each output a set voltage. Use this to play the pitch or as modulation signals. A great tool for inspiration!

The Pro VLA II is a tube driven Vactrol-based compressor/leveling amplifier designed to excel in any professional audio environment. Review: Arther Baker's Dance Masters series continues, as the spotlight turns to another remix legend: one of the originators of the form, John Luongo. Regarded as one of the most influential DJs and mixers of his day, Luongo's many credits include remixes of Jackie Moore's 'This Time Baby', 'Vertigo / Relight My Fire' by Dan Hartman and Patti Labelle's 'Music Is My Way Of Life'. Luongo also went on to establish a production career in his own right, and his legacy is more than cemented here on this retrospective comp from Demon. This box set compiles his most striking tracks in a sixc LP compilation, as well as: a 16-page booklet; an in-depth essay from Alexis Petridis; a foreword by Arthur Baker and a rare photo album from Luongo's personal collection.

Review: With the recently announced news of a final "new" track from The Beatles set to imminently drop, reissues of both the iconic/infamous Red and Blue compilations are set to be delivered on a gatefold 180 gram vinyl 3xLP half-speed remaster, with the blue spanning their output from 1967 to 1970, this version exclusively bears the highly anticipated last original recording 'Now & Then'. Providing picture disc represses of all eight LPs released during the original frontman's tenure from 1970 to 1978 (2013's reunion album 13 is not included), the collection boasts the self-titled 1970 debut, the same-year follow up Paranoid, as well as the iconic slew of Master Of Reality (1971), Vol 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), Sabotage (1975), Technical Ecstasy (1976) and Never Say Die! (1978).
