Oh Jah Jah
Oh Jah Jah (white vinyl 10")
Cat: DS 03. Rel: 19 Feb 24

Roots/Lovers Rock
Oh Jah Jah (8:23)
Jah Militia Dub (7:39)
Review: Dubshop.nl is on a roll at this early stage in its life and for the third outing from the Dutch dub lovers we get a nice white 10" with some real heady tackle from The Disciples. Originally produced and mixed by Russ D. at the Backyard Studio and dropped in 2004 on Boom Shaka, this reissue brings two softer delights back to the fore. 'Oh Jah Jah' is a nice, slow-motion churner with mystic flute leads and natty chords. It stretches out over eight mesmerising minutes and the flipside 'Jah Militia Dub' slows things down with amore organic feel and rich percussion.

Kunte Kinte (6:04)
Kunte Kinte Version (6:03)
Review: Bernard Cumberbatch - presumably no relation to actor Benedict - and Garnett Cross are Aquizi, the dub duo fromed in the early 80s and Aiwa label mainstays. Their most notable 12" - aside from maybe 1981's 'Merry Christmas' was 'Kunte Kinte' earlier in the same year. It is a bit of a collector's fav that has more than held its value over the ensuing 40+ years. Driven by lazy dub swagger and carefree keys, it's a lovers rock outing peppered with toms and hits and plenty of echoing depths. Flip it over for version if you want something that will boggle the brain more with its endless mixing board effects.

Review: Ras Guerrilla opts for a 10" slab of wax for this new one which features two vocal and two dub cuts. Tony Roots is the man main but also featuring on it are Jahbar I, Clive Hylton from Colour Red association, plus the always eager to impress Fire House Crew with none other than Flabba Holt on bass. Four vital cuts of seriously sick roots and lovers rock fusions with head twisting versions so that all moments in the party are catered for.

Answer (Rob Smith remix)
Answer (Ras Stryka Dread remix)
Answer: Lullaby (Sledgehead remix)
Lullaby Dub (Sledgehead remix)
Answer (DJ Pinch remix)
Review: Rarely does a set of remixes unite such a disparate set of genres as roots reggae, dubstep, techno and cosmic balearica with such
effortless aplomb as this red hot 10" plate from out of Bristol town. Suitably, it's been burning holes in premier league sound systems
through recent weeks: Jah Shaka, Aba Shanti for instance - as well as providing the climactic moment of Pinch's recent, much
discussed and widely sought after 'dubstep meets techno' mix for the wonderful Mary Anne Hobbes' show on Radio 1. Andy Scholes
of Henry & Louis recorded the original, yearning Tony Tuff vocal to 'Answer' during the mid-nineties at the legendary Channel One,
Kingston Town - one of the holiest of studio spaces in Jamaica. Tuff's pedigree since the early classic African Brothers' sides such
as 'Righteous Kingdom' is beyond question, and here the loops and arcs of his vocal taps into that same spiritual feeling, as he sends
out 'a message to all corners of the earth'. Rob Smith of More Rockers fame stays true to this heritage for his remix, like the long term,
dyed in the wool true roots man he is, underpinning the Prince Far-I echoes of Prince Green's inspirational DJ delivery with considerable
bass pressure. Ras Stryka Dread's mix ascribes a fluid digital reggae low end flow to proceedings which should fairly sing on the more
digitally inclined systems. The flip holds two delicious wild cards - The Cure's 'Lullaby' is yanked out of the doom-laden surroundings of
the classic 'Disintegration' album and injected with some delightful and surprising sunshine vibes, Sledgehead running vocal and dub
remixes which could well become defining sunset records for the summer we're all hoping may well yet arrive. Which leaves a seismic
Pinch remix to completely rush the sound - unpacking the crucial yard credentials atop a skeletal, rigorous stepper - proper uptempo
dancefloor material with a deadliest floor covering bass hum which should only come to true life on the sturdiest, largest systems, it
concludes a totally essential ep in bravura fashion. 'Answer' is out on 2 Kings.

Review: Dutch label Roots Unity Music is back with this new one by Leeds-based Bunnington Judah and Rapha Pico (Signal1 Records) with Nga Han of The Hi Flyers fame. On the A side is Judah, a long time warrior from the UK Dub Roots Sound System scene and vocalist, as well as a master Binghi drum specialist. Review: Martin Harrison worked with legends like This Heat and On u Sound as well as many other vocal dub practitioners. Here he offers up a pair of longer stepping mixes of Yabby You and They Prophets' 'Dub Conqueror.' it is tune that may be familiar to dub techno fans as having been reworked by Steve O'Sullivan into a brilliantly heady groove. Burning Spear & Roland Alphonso - "Door Peeper" (4:39)
Willie Williams - "All The Way" (5:58)
Review: An anthem with an early reggae riddim. Burning Spear was an alias for Winston Rodney, one of the most beloved Jamaican singers. 'Door Peeper' was originally released in 1969 on the Supreme label in Jamaica, and later on Bamboo in the UK. Rasta lyrics and musical motifs had been previously adapted for commercial release, but none sounded quite like this. Dissimilar to the fast instrumental reggae records that were resonating with white teenagers in England at the time, this was 'starkly uncompromising music that demanded to be taken on its own terms, or not at all.'

Review: Joe 9000 Dub Records made a successful debut last year and has since put out a crucial follow up. The third missive from the label is from debutant Poyzun, who links with the eponymous Joe 9000 Dub for two killer hits that come, of course, with dubs. Jah Great is stripped back but effective, with a rolling drum line and fat bass, as well as some well delivered patois vocals. The same tune gets a heavy dub mix that is primed for sound system action and then 'Riot Dub' is a different vibe. It has pens, soulful leads bringing light to a more delicate and icy cold dub that has rattling hits and far sighted get that it's easy to get lost in.

Tenyue (aka Matic) has and continues to record with some of the greatest reggae recording artists, and is a sought after musician and producer. Review: There's much to set the pulse racing on Indica Sounds' latest ten-inch, not least a first label appearance for rising star Eva Keyes, whose previous releases on Partial Records were all nigh on essential. 'A Place Called Home' is another brilliant soul-fired digital reggae excursion from the singer, with her trademark vocal lilt sounding more haunting than ever. Indica Dubs and Conscious Sounds make the most of selected vocal snippets on their accompanying dub mix, which naturally boasts tougher production and even weighty bass. Melodica maestro Chazbo gets to chance to do his thing over the same riddim on the flip ('Zion Is Home'), before Indica Dubs and Conscious Sounds successfully turn his take into a heavy steppers style workout ('Dub in Zion').

It kicks off with Naphtali's "Ignorance Reigns", a fresh and crisp cut with impassioned vocals full of flavour and future facing synths that are sustained throughout. The roots drums and chord work is majestic indeed, especially when brought to the fore on the "Dub Reigns" version on the flip. Also included is a Keety Roots mix that's drowned in echo and reverb for those hazy afternoons.

Review: Jabesh and I David combine to great effect here for a selection of dubs that fuse the old with the new. There are classic guitars and drums on title track "Hold A Meditation" but the broad, smeared synth bass adds some contemporary cool that makes it suitable for a range of different settings. The "Dub" version has lush wet claps and mesmeric filter work before a tooting top line on "Rocktone Melody" gets you in a different state of trance. Closer "Rock To The Dub" sees I David show off his mastery of the studio buttons and rounds out a solid 7".

Review: It's been a while since Archiver launched his I & I Musik label with the "Pusherman" dub but he's back and it's a serious thing. Gravity weighs off every word Ras Tinny spits. A stern story of greed's vicious pyramid laid over some springy kicks and ebbed textures, it's an alluring attack of both thoughts and senses. Alpha Steppa takes it deeper into the dance with a heavy pressure skank on the flip. Highly recommended.

Review: Scrupulously heavy and skanky Netherlands dub comes swanging our way from Bukkha, in collaboration with Dubbing Sun and Donovan Kingjay. 'Whip Dem' hears the Jamaican-American producer's dubwise productions meet fellow artists from Austria and South East London respectively; Kingjay's vocals deliver a powerful message of justice and liberation over a deep, clean steppers' riddim. Zukie's primary career was through the late 70s and early 80s, with his name on a huge swathe of singles, dubplates and specials through the years after he arrived in the UK in 1973. 'Natty Princess Dub' is a standout cut from that era, stripped down to a skeletal core of drums and bass for a proper dubwise ride, and 'Rock You Rock' and 'Dub Hypocrites' on the flip are just as serious for any selector.

Review: Over the last four years, Idren Natural's Dubolution-produced 'Jah Garden' - a steppers-powered roots/digi-dub fusion cut featuring a superb lead vocal - has been a dubplate special in Inidica Dubs' DJ sets. It's fitting then that they've finally decided to release it on their own label, with the killer original mix being joined by a trio of tasty dubs. Dubolution's own dub-style version is faithfully weighty and skeletal, while wisely emphasizing his own jazzy guitar licks, while Indica Dubs' flipside revisions are equally as potent. The 'Garden Dubplate Mix' is a punchy, full-throttle dancefloor dub workout, while the 'Raw Dub Mix' sounds like one of Mad Professor's wilder, heavier offerings.

Review: We start off with a powerful remix from the most creative Norwegian duo - Future Prophecies. 'War Without End' begins with eerie atmospheric sounds that evolve throughout the track beneath the deadly basslines embarking on an incredible journey. Sudden piano stabs remind us not to get too lost in our thoughts. But once again, we are presented with soaring basslines that lead us to the second breakdown. From there we continue to ride on those grave basslines and precise percussion until the end. This track is enigmatic in a special kind of way. Once you listen to it, you'll see! "Bravado" starts out with a nice laidback amen groove slowly working it's way to the breakdown. Suddenly we are presented with a series of heavier breaks and chaotic loops. The spirits are rising as we explore further into the track. Scratching (done by Lizon himself) leads us to the main part of the tune which holds an aggressive synth cut back and forth, creating a somehow colourful atmosphere.
