New Generation
Together
Review: This is the first Suede release with a co-writing credit for guitarist Richard Oakes, who succeeded Bernard Butler. Oakes is on the b-side 'Together', while the a-side - the best track on Suede's iconic second album Dog Man Star - is credited to the legendary plankspanker Butler. 'New Generation' is a beautiful blend of Manic Street Preachers-esque rock with Bowie and T-Rex-esque glam - it's a perfect pop song. Singer Brett Anderson is at his hooky and melodic best here. Meanwhile, 'Together' takes a more Stone Roses-y blues rock direction and it's tougher with more bile, but still majestic thanks to the lush wall of sound that Suede do so well, whilst retaining their hard rock DNA.

Review: This is The National's Matt Berninger's second solo album and treads a sonically similar path to the Cincinnati band, with some forlorn lyrics and gloomy delivery. Berninger is clearly a fan of plumbing the depths of his heart and fortunately has the talent to be considered one of the top merchants of emotion around these days. Of the tracks here, 'Breaking Into Acting' is a beautiful slice of stately Americana and his vocals interlock beautifully with Meg Duffy, aka Hand Habits. For something more energetic try 'Bonnet Of Pins' as it's a pulsating chamber pop cut with thumping rhythms and a tear-jerking yet rabble rousing atmosphere. Live, this one will ultimately go down a treat.

Review: To mark a decade since its original release, Carrie & Lowell returns in expanded double vinyl edition through Asthmatic Kitty, curated and designed by Sufjan Stevens himself. The anniversary release addends 7 unreleased tracks, as well as a full 40-page art book, and a newly unearthed Polaroid cover revealing the album's namesake, handwritten by Sufjan's sister Djamilah. The booklet contains family photos over four generations, as well as Sufjan's own landscape photography taken throughout the American West, all reflecting themes of loss, memory, and place. The second LP compiles forty minutes of bonus material, including demos of 'Death With Dignity' and 'Eugene', atmospheric outtakes of 'Fourth of July' and 'Wallowa Lake Monster', and the original version of 'Mystery of Love', recorded during the album's sessions before its reworking for the infamous Timothee Chalamet actor-debut Call Me By Your Name.

Review: Yeule (Nat Cmiel) is something of a sonic scrapyard varmint, scouring the lost wastes for augmentable audio parts perhaps useable in their madcap experiments. An avant-garde spin doctor of ash-faced, death-ray-desert-bomb glitch-pop, they've kept their place at the knife-edge of innovation, blending genres and non-genres at the violent vanguard where sounds remain in constant, slipped flux. In the lineage of Machine Girl, ecolagbohrsac2021 or Hakushi Hasegawa, 2022's Glitch Princess laid nutritious ground for Cmiel's now evermore fractious work, Evangelic Girl Is A Gun, which hears the somewhat alter-egoic Yeule now delve into the complexity of a fragmented identity, embracing the duality of light and shadow while echoing surreal animes, such as Serial Experiments Lain and Angel Egg. The LP reimagines Yeule as a haunting figure, exploring ego deaths and transformations in partnership with visual artist Vasso Vu.

Review: Peter Hook's post-New Order venture with David Potts resurfaces after 25 years with Monaco, the duo's second and final album, finally seeing a vinyl pressing for the first time. The self-titled LP followed Music For Pleasure and leant into Hook and Potts' foundational fondness for rock-dance hybrids, with the buoyant 'I've Got A Feeling' and the moodier 'See Saw' among the stereo-steroidal standouts; we've everything from Brit-pub rock whimsy to club-shuttling indie house respectively. This UK-only edition lands as a deluxe gatefold double crystal clear wax; with a four-page booklet and a deluge of bonus tracks, this is the first proper physical revisit to a project that closed the 90s in the shadow of Hook's better-known bands.

Review: Between 1995 and 2000 Joy Division's Peter Hook and his collaborator David Potts formed Monaco and released two cracking albums. The second of which is now getting an anniversary release in the best possible audiophile quality. It didn't fare as well commercially as the first album, which had the hit 'What Do You Want From Me' and was more electronic in nature. But the janglier nature of this second record is a joy to delve into. 'I've Got A Feeling' has melodies to rival The La's and 'Kashmere' is a sign that in terms of production Monaco were operating on another level compared to most in the post-Britpop space. Meanwhile, hearing Hook's signature basslines throughout, but within a sonic bedding that you haven't quite heard him play before, is a compelling joy. Under-championed excellence here from Monaco.

Review: One of many recent megabands to arise out of London over the past decade, Caroline return with Caroline 2, an assertive followup to their eponymous debut. A scribblier, pocketbook style is heard; where their first album toyed with minimalism and restraint, Caroline 2 leans into extremes, surging across hushed textures, acoustic detail and synthetic blur, perhaps best recalling the recent hyperdigital indie collages of Bon Iver. With a topical and tasteful feature from post-gloss pop singer Caroline Polachek on 'Tell Me I Never Knew That', the record is led up by a eerily ear-sieging hyperpop ballad, doing justice to the shared name, as if to revel in nominative fate: "it always happens, it always will be..."

Review: Mansfield new wave band B Movie unearth their long-lost 1982 album Hidden Treasures, more than forty years after they first recorded it for Phonogram, an imprint of Universal. The band were on the same management and signed to the same label as Soft Cell, but their career turned out to be a damp squib by comparison and they split up in the mid-eighties, without ever releasing this great album of synth pop for goths. Taking influences from the likes of Ultravox and The Human League, they cloak it in a more brooding atmosphere, reminiscent of The Chameleons and Joy Divsion - hitting all the right notes along the way, we think.

Review: Alan Sparhawk isn't one for large crowds or the showy side of fame, yet over the course of his career, his influence has expanded far beyond his low-key persona. As the frontman of Low, the band he founded in the early 90s in Duluth, Minnesota, Sparhawk's distinct style has permeated not just indie rock but also the broader sphere of music that prizes depth over spectacle. The hallmark of Sparhawk's songwriting is the austere, almost minimalist beauty he coaxes from the sparsest of arrangements. His approach to music is inextricable from his sense of placeiDuluth's biting winters, its isolationieverything about the environment feeds into the slow-moving intensity of Low's sound. Musically, the album moves through a variety of textures, from the folk-tinged melodies of 'Heaven' and 'Get Still' to the raw emotional power of 'Screaming Song' and 'Don't Take Your Light.' The latter is particularly stirring, with its swelling fiddles and cello lines, embodying the depth of feeling that pours out during the recording. There's a certain urgency to the musician immediacy that comes from being in a room full of people who understand what it means to create together. The track 'Stranger' is imbued with an intimate, communal spirit, while 'Torn & in Ashes' builds on layers of banjo and mandolin, giving it a rich, earthy feel. Even as the sounds shift, there's an underlying consistency in the raw honesty of Sparhawk's voice and the way the band responds to it. Overall, the record a sense of continuity, reminding us that music, when made with those closest to you, becomes a vessel for lasting memories and support.

Review: Stereolab first formed back in 1990 in London. Record collector Tim Gane hooked up with French chanteuse Laetitia Sadier and they stayed together until 2009, then took a hiatus until retiring to the live arena in 2019. There have only been reissues since, but now the group returns with their first new album in 15 years. It features 13 fresh studio tracks from the avant-pop pioneers who revitalise their sounds with signature motorik grooves and adventurous new textures. Announced via a 7" single and cryptic word search sent to uber fans, it features guest appearances from Cooper Crain, Rob Frye and others, all adding rich layers. Lead single 'Aerial Troubles' signifies the playful experimentation and sly sophistication you would expect from this band, this effort feeling warmly familiar yet thrillingly new.

Review: Matt Berninger, voice and wordsmith behind The National, returns with his sophomore solo effort Get Sunk: for his sharp enough to cut adamantium and melodies that linger like motion ghosts, Berninger digs deep into the questions of identity: who we once were, what happiness really means, and the search that never ends. The album doesn't spell out autobiography but channels a narrator exploring selfhood amid possibilities and pitfalls, balancing on the edge of joy and despair. Collaborating with Hand Habits on 'Breaking Into Acting', and from the reefing 'Inland Ocean' to the reflective 'Times of Difficulty,' Get Sunk is a true personal snorkel dive, tracing both bound ties and yet unwondered roads.

Review: February 2024 saw two levee-breaking live moments by The 1975: here the indie band would return to Manchester for two massive AO Arena dates on 17 and 18 February, riding the rips of their biggest world tour yet. While technically from Wilmslow, the band cut their teeth in Greater Manchester's storied live scene and have always claimed the city as their unofficial hometown. Despite turning the leaf on a string of controversies centred on frontman Matty Healy, that didn't stop them from operating Still At Their Very Best, promising the kind of raucous, genre-blending performance fans expect a decade into their career. Support comes from labelmates The Japanese House, and Healy would later duet with Amber Bain on cult single 'Sunshine Baby.' This LP recording of the live spate distils a thirty-track stack of pristine live redeliveries, and with a monomaniacal arena's roar throughout, we hear a larger-than-life return home for the band.

Review: There's a dark and eerie underbelly to Kathryn Joseph's We Were Made Prey. Everything feels dense, the air thick with a kind of moonlight, midnight unease. Images spring to mind of rushing through twilight woodlands or sailing through blinding fog. More than a few shades of Kate Bush, with the leading lady's vocal range certainly worthy of such a comparison. Tracks like 'Deer' owe more to the eternal Wuthering Heights resident than others, perhaps, but when all is said and done drawing this kind of comparison does us all a disservice. Lazy writing, and a failure to recognise the unique individuality of both female icons. Sticking in the here and now, Joseph has this remarkable ability to distill heady, intoxicating songs that grow, blossom, sometimes growl and always captivate. An emotionally charged enigma you need in your life.

Review: MRCY, the r&b/soul duo of Barney Lister and Kojo Degraft-Johnson, return with Volume 2: a bold, emotionally charged collection building on their acclaimed debut. Blending timeless influences with modern textures, their music offers comfort and unpredictability. "We're trying to extinguish fear with optimism and worry with love," Barney explains. This ethos runs through the album, from the uplifting grooves of 'Angels' and 'Wanna Know (Ontario)' to the driving rhythms of 'Man', which challenges ideals of masculinity over Afrobeat percussion and jazz flourishes.

Review: Civic frontman Jim McCullogh apparently likes the idea of his band being more of a "mind set" than a group per se. Each record adds another layer to that perspective, like the evolution of a character rather than the trajectory of a troubadour troupe. In this case "one of the main objectives for this album was to make a drastic turn in our sound. Break the mould, melt the steel." Of course, there's still that heavily post-punk influenced Civic sound coursing through the rhythms here, and it's as gritty as ever. But it's also full of curveballs and unexpected twists, at times punting for a more jangle-y atmosphere, in other moments something resolutely muscular and main stage. Either way, it's going to hit you in the face and refuse to apologise.

A staunch champion of the beloved Leeds indie rockers The Wedding Present, these eight tracks are taken from two sessions that David Gedge and co. laid down in 2019 and 2023. There's a wellspring of riches here from the 1985-formed band. From the relentless Sonic Youth-esque guitar-led number 'Don't Give Up Without A Fight, to their cover of Low's 'Canada' and Magazine's 'A Song From Under The Floorboards - it's stacked with bangers. Perhaps the John Peel of modern times, Riley's archive is endlessly inspirational - and his love of The Wedding Present entirely relatable.

Review: Talk about things that make you go "oooh." The moment we heard that Daniel Avery, Working Men's Club and Ghost Culture were working together on a "new musical project" we had a lot riding on the results being particularly potent. Quite what they might sound like was anyone's guess mind, and there was an underlying worry that we might be left with another supergroup disappointment - where the parts are strong but don't necessarily understand how to gel. Demise of Love prove that doesn't have to be the case every time. It sounds like all of the above and yet none of them, it's ripe with emotion, fraught with punk ferocity and outwardly romantic in an electronic sense. Rave-y, weird, melancholic, angry, sleazy and infinitely re-playable, believe the hype.

Review: If you roll the clock back ten years and more you'd be made to think you're crazy for saying Ty Segall will release country-inflected soft rock one day. He was making the very best feral sweaty garage rock quite consistently. But you know what? The new look suits him well and his Warren Zevon-era is cool. 'Fantastic Tomb' is a string and horn-laden romp that will liven up any home that's lucky enough to have it played within its four walls. The fallout from this will most likely be that the curtain is closing on all the neo-psych and garage rock and more bands are likely to follow in line with this type of sound. This is at the forefront of a new wave of country/Americana-tinged alt-rock that started when Black Lips did it ironically but is now gaining momentum in more sincere, yet still flamboyant ways.

Review: This is the first album in four years from Scot-fronted Los Angeles band Garbage and their eighth studio album total. The previous album, No Gods No Masters, delved into some heavy sociopolitical themes, which were given a lot of attention because it came out amid Covid. With this album, as the title gives away, there is a shift towards more positive thinking, even if some seriousness remains. The single 'There's No Future In Optimism' reminds us to grab life by the horns and feel unburned by darkness for a moment - Shirley Manson clearly remembering the joy of pop and the hope it can bring, despite geopolitical uncertainties. Sonically, they've crafted very powerful electronica-tinged rock, with a brilliant emphasis on rhythm, the joys of a well constructed beat and some gritty bass.

Review: Four years, a lot of gigs, and a change of lineup are all that have stood between Vyvyd and The Uncanny Extravaganza. New Candys triumphant return after the best part of a half decade is exactly that, unleashing some of the most powerful tracks in their oeuvre after no less than two years spent writing, recording and producing them. Which is ironic, given the raw, unfettered distortion that makes much of what's here so compelling and utterly devastating. It would sound off-the-cuff, it it weren't so complex. The Uncanny Extravaganza is one of those records that makes you genuinely excited about the prospect of seeing a band live again. It's loud - even if you've got the volume down - and its disharmonious, it's soaring and distant yet immediate and up front. It's psyche-infused garage rock with a dusting of raucous shoegaze (if that's possibly a thing), at times nodding to the likes of Ringo Deathstar or Death In Vegas, in other moments Spiritualised. Or maybe that's just us.

Review: Plucking themselves and their strings out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Watchhouse has its foundations in Mandolin Orange, and the duo - songwriter Andrew Marlin (vocals, mandolin, guitar, banjo) and Emily Frantz (vocals, violin, guitar) - haven't necessarily changed since the name switch. A married couple, there's always been this beautiful intimacy in their music, which is often tender, if not strictly quiet. Eight studio albums in and most of the reasons we fell for this Americana-folk-country outfit remain front and centre. The musicianship, at times, is nothing short of spectacular. Check the chord work on 'In The Sun'. The lyrics are capable of stopping you dead, forcing contemplation and reflection. And the overall atmosphere is like the feeling you have after stepping off a train back home. Slow down, re-familiarise, and pay some attention to the subtle things.

Review: 2002's Hooverphonic Presents Jackie Cane always felt like the odd jewel in the Belgian outfit's catalogue i part concept album, part theatrical detour, wrapped in lush strings and Bond-theme bravado. The 2025 reissue brings it back into focus, and it's certainly worth revisiting. There's drama i torch songs, twisted pop, and trip-hop filtered through a cinematic lens i but also a tangible sense of melancholy beneath. Tracks like 'Sometimes' and 'Human Interest' still land with weight, while the nocturnal psychedelia of 'Jackie's Delirium' and 'Shampoo' adds hallucinogenic depth to the collection. It's all very stylised, but that's part of the charm. You can hear the ambition, the restlessness. Not quite cool, not quite kitsch, but somehow it works.

Review: A decade later, this landmark work still cuts like a quiet revelation. Originally released in 2015 by the Michigan-based songwriter, the album marked a sharp return to acoustic intimacy, steeped in grief following the death of his mother. The original recordings are preserved here with their stark, hushed intensity intact: skeletal arrangements cradle whispered meditations on loss and the half-formed memories of childhood. '4th of July' unfurls with ghostly repetition; 'No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross' lingers in the air like a last breath; 'John My Beloved' feels spoken rather than sung. The second disc brings seven unearthed tracks, mostly stripped-back demos. 'Eugene' and 'The Only Thing' appear in rawer forms, with faint lyrical shifts and a slightly looser grasp on grief. 'Wallowa Lake Monster (Version 2)' stretches toward something more orchestral, while 'Fourth of July (Version 4)' swaps hushed devastation for cinematic scope. The inclusion of the original 'Mystery of Love' is particularly poignant i recorded during the same sessions but unreleased until now, it's just voice and guitar, with altered lyrics that render it even more fragile than the version made famous in Call Me By Your Name. The booklet and alternate cover, both assembled by the artist himself, deepen the intimacy further i full of snapshots, sketches and quiet revelations that bring the music's emotional terrain into sharper, more painful focus.

Review: Non-binary performance artist Nat Cmiel from Singapore, often also known as yeule, continues to push the boundaries of glitch-pop and alt-electronica with their latest release. After solidifying their reputation as a trailblazer with their sophomore album Glitch Princess and its follow-up softscars, Cmiel takes a more daring, raw approach here. It's a cathartic exploration of self-destruction, trapped identities and the dark undercurrents of post-modernity, where Cmiel's ethereal vocals intertwine with dissonant beats, creating a paradox of beauty and tension. The sprawling atmospherics of 'Tequila Coma' and '1967' unfurl into a liquid haze, giving way to the razor-edged urgency of 'VV' and 'Dudu', which channel a palpable, jittery rhythm that commands attention. Collaborating with the likes of A.G. Cook and Mura Masa, the album navigates between haunting introspection and electrifying energy. It's a striking nod to Cmiel's ability to balance vulnerability and sonic experimentation, presenting a portrait of the artist struggling with the very image they've built.
