Review: Big Boys are punk visionaries from Austin in Texas and they sure made a big bang with what they described as their "debut, sophomore, and final album." This bunch of renegades came up in the late 1970's Austin scene. The band was led by the dynamic Randy "Biscuit" Turner, alongside Tim Kerr, Chris Gates, and various drummers like Rey Washam. They infused their music with skate funk, which means they somewhat deviated from hardcore norms at the time. Their diverse sound touched on post-punk akin to The Minutemen and inclusion in Thrasher magazine's cult "skate comps" catapulted them to fame among 80s skate punk enthusiasts. Renowned for engaging their live audiences like few others, they fearlessly explored new musical realms, even tackling Kool and the Gang covers at one point.

Review: The complete studio recordings from Austin, Texas noise rockers Scratch Acid - all remastered from the original tapes. Formed in 1982, they received minimal attention outside their hometown scene and their time as a band was short-lived as they split in 1987. Nevertheless, the band members have punk rock CV's for the ages (frontman David Yow formed The Jesus Lizard with bassist David Sims) and they leave in their wake a treasure-trove of frenzied, darkly-atmospheric tunes. The recordings, which you leave you dumbfounded how they didn't become more popular, are the perfect companion to messy nights in. Instead of looking like a hipster-by-numbers and putting Nick Cave's The Birthday Party on - put a track from this collection on instead; say 'Owner's Lament'. It's way cooler.

Review: Chicago-bred noise rock legends Shellac deliver their sixth studio album To All Trains, following up 2019's The End Of Radio Peel Session retrospective with an abiding, slowly-honed new full-length - their first original work in a decade. Though released to little fanfare, To All Trains is a totemic album, committing to themes of transience and dread; guitarist Steve Albini, drummer Todd Trainer and bassist Bob Weston do it properly here, promising a pristine new release born of long weekends, tireless sweats and, naturally, all-analog treatment at Albini's Electrical Audio studio in Chicago.

Review: Shellac's sixth studio album, To All Trains, is a demonstration to the band's distinctive sound. Recorded over several years and mastered by Bob & Steve at Chicago Mastering Service, the album features Shellac's trademark minimalist sound, characterised by asymmetric time signatures, repetitive rhythms, and angular guitar sound. Albini's and Weston's surreal, bitingly sarcastic lyrics add to the album's unique atmosphere. With its complex and unconventional approach to music, To All Trains showcases Shellac's mastery of their craft and their unwavering commitment to their distinctive sonic vision.

Review: Righteously rare recordings from the annals of UK-US music culture makes its way to disc via the legendary John Peel and the inimitable Steve Albini (and his Shellac band). Containing cuts from the late radio-jock's worshipped Peel Sessions broadcast in 2004, this archival release features a stream of previously unreleased recordings of the Chicago group's live & studio sessions for the legendary radio spot. The CDs deliver raw and seldom heard versions of "Crow" (from 1998's Terraform LP) alongside "Canada," "Disgrace" and "Spoke" from the Excellent Italian Greyhound LP (2007). Filled with stories of the BBC's "live From Maida Vale" sessions and the studio's famous 24-track console, these exhumed artifacts all make it out at a time when Albini has been quoted saying of Shellac: ""There will be more new material in the future."

Review: In many ways Spiderland is lucky to exist., Slint weren't exactly the most avid studio band in the world, only recording two full length albums during the five years in which they were properly active. They also disbanded around the time this record was released - 1991 - perhaps even shortly before, which could have scuppered any plans for their difficult second even after they managed to emerge from a recording facility with enough tracks.

But what tracks they are. Spiderland is rightly considered an absolute landmark, an LP that captures the spirit of rock 'n' roll in transition. Leaving one decade behind, and the hardcore punk that had dominated the underground guitar scene, while still retaining those ethics, it has one foot in grunge, another in experimental, another in garage and a fourth somewhere else. Enough limbs to mark it out as a real mutant.

Review: Produced by Brian Paulson at River North Recorders in Chicago and released by Touch and Go Records in April of 1991, the six songs on Slint's Spiderland (now reissued on the same label) methodically mapped a shadowy new continent of sound. The music is taut, menacing, and haunting; its structure built largely on absence and restraint, on the echoing space between the notes, but punctuated by sudden thrilling blasts of unfettered fury. It is a sound that no one had heard before and that no one will ever forget. The eerie, now-iconic black and white cover photo of the four-band member's heads breaking the surface of the water was taken by their friend Will Oldham. Spiderland spawned a whole new genre, frequently called post rock, and came to be regarded as one of the most important and influential records of the past thirty years.

Review: Slint's Tweez, their debut album, may be overshadowed by the iconic Spiderland, but it's a fascinating, raw piece of work that deserves more attention. Recently reissued on 180-gram red vinyl, Tweez blends punk, math-rock, and indie with hints of early post-rock, creating an unpredictable and experimental sonic experience. The scratchy guitars, booming bass, and old-school drums give it an unpolished, gritty feel, while the band's odd use of conversation snippets and abrupt rhythm changes add an eerie, unsettling atmosphere. Highlights like 'Ron' display a frenetic energy with shifting tempos and distorted riffs, while 'Darlene' is filled with wiry, snake-like guitar lines. Despite some tracks feeling chaotic, the album's rawness and strange dynamics offer a unique listening experience. Tweez might be more dissonant and challenging than its follow-up, but it's a testament to Slint's fearless creativity. Its blend of noise, gloom, and grit makes it a hidden gem for fans of experimental music, rewarding those willing to dig into its dense layers. Overlooked but unforgettable, Tweez is a chaotic yet intriguing listen.

Review: The 35th anniversary edition of Tweez offers a fascinating glimpse into Slint's early sound. Originally recorded in 1989 and produced by Steve Albini, this remastered version adds new life to an album that's raw and unconventional. Slint's unique blend of punk, indie and math rock feels unpredictable, as songs like 'Ron' explode with distorted guitar and shifting rhythms, creating an intense atmosphere. The album's eerie, unsettling vibe is further emphasised by moments of spoken dialogue and ambient noise, giving it a haunting quality. The newly included tweethan mix, remixed by bassist Ethan Buckler, adds an intriguing perspective to the original tracks. This version strips back some of the Albini production and delivers a cleaner, more direct sound that allows the intricate musicianship to shine. Though Tweez may feel chaotic at times, its raw energy and experimental edge make it a compelling listen, showcasing Slint's early brilliance and setting the stage for their seminal work, Spiderland.
