Review: Epic alert! New York industrial gods Swans' latest single is a 19-minute behemoth that unfurls like an overwhelming emotional landscape. Gira's gravelly voice takes centre stage, enveloped by the steady churn of droning guitars and atmospheric textures that build to a blistering intensity. 'The Healers' and 'I Am A Tower' highlight the band's mastery of long-form tension, each section holding, stretching, and twisting in a way that feels like a momentary release, only to be swallowed by the next wave. It's a slow, deliberate unfolding of sound that's both hypnotic and punishing. This isn't music for the passive listener; it's exhausting yet utterly immersive, teasing out tension and reflection in equal measure. If you didn't know already, consider yoursefl warned.

Review: American industrial kings Swans' latest offering unfurls across a sprawling 19-minute journey, building a tension that is as much about space as it is about sound. The first half, marked by 'The Healers' and 'I Am A Tower,' feels like an unyielding force, as if the music itself is evolving into something beyond human comprehension. Gira's voice, thick with grit, clashes with the deep rumble of guitars, creating a rhythm that seems to pulse from a primal core. The journey picks up momentum through 'Red Yellow' and 'Guardian Spirit,' where the sound bends and twists, its drone-like qualities alternately lulling and unsettling. By the time 'Away' takes hold, the track feels less like a song and more like an emotional release, with each successive wave stripping something away, leaving raw, exposed moments in their wake. A visceral experience that demands patience and reflection, with each track revealing layers of complexity.

Review: Released without a hint of fanfare first time round in 2021, this deeply intimate collaboration between Ukrainian vocalist Yana Pavlova and Berlin-based producer Pavel Milyakov continues to command attention, almost of its own accord. Built out of minimal guitar patterns, submerged dub-influenced bass and spectral saxophone contributions from Alex Zhang Hungtai, the LP unfolds through a mix of improv and aleatory algo-synthesis, where rather than smoothing over imperfections, the artists lean into them; mic rustle, background clicks and ambient irregularities all inform on its dark jazzy, trancelike post-humanoid atmos.

A Mechanical Joey

Review: Bill Orcutt is hailed the world over for his distinctive blues-infused, free improvisational acoustic guitar rah, a craft he's honed since his 2009 solo record A New Way To Pay Old Debts, which marked his return to music after the dissolution of the influential noise rock band Harry Pussy. Beyond music, Orcutt worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley for over 20 years; and suitably, his more recent works have introduced homespun analogue guitar work to the art of electronic estrangement, technocratizing a formerly scruffy sound. After the experimental 2011 release 'Let's Build A Pussy', through which he manipulated a second-long "drum vocal" into an hour-long piece, here he further embraces the encroaching tide of digital tech with 'A Mechanical Joey', yet another 35-minute track spread over two antipodean sides; this one involves an outsider-arty, heteroclitic manipulation of a six-time Joey Ramone sample.

Review: The cult Kraut/psych/folk/drone outfit France, celebrated for crafting sound that transcends typical genre constraints with atmospheric richness, make an unprecedented leap in their latest release. Teaming up with French underground group Standard In-Fi and Belgian label a1000p, the band embraces an unconventional approach to both performance and recording. The idea was born from a chance encounter between the band and Mim, the sound engineer behind a1000p, who proposed bringing his studio gear directly to a live show. After a failed attempt at a traditional studio session, they settled on something more radical: recording live in an open-air amphitheatre in the French countryside. In 2022, Mim partnered with the Rituale Festival to make the dream a reality, arranging a concert at St. Roman de Codieres, near his vineyards. With the amphitheatre nestled in a valley, Mim meticulously set up his equipment, deploying an array of mics to capture both the immediate and distant sounds of the performance. The resulting sound is nothing short of remarkableian enveloping blend of rawness and finely tuned acoustics with the recording process, intricate and expansive, ensuring every subtle detail of the band's sonic journey is preserved. Whether it's the swirling folk melodies or the layered drones and psych flourishes, the mix elevates their sound to new heights here.

Review: Alan Sparhawk isn't one for large crowds or the showy side of fame, yet over the course of his career, his influence has expanded far beyond his low-key persona. As the frontman of Low, the band he founded in the early 90s in Duluth, Minnesota, Sparhawk's distinct style has permeated not just indie rock but also the broader sphere of music that prizes depth over spectacle. The hallmark of Sparhawk's songwriting is the austere, almost minimalist beauty he coaxes from the sparsest of arrangements. His approach to music is inextricable from his sense of placeiDuluth's biting winters, its isolationieverything about the environment feeds into the slow-moving intensity of Low's sound. Musically, the album moves through a variety of textures, from the folk-tinged melodies of 'Heaven' and 'Get Still' to the raw emotional power of 'Screaming Song' and 'Don't Take Your Light.' The latter is particularly stirring, with its swelling fiddles and cello lines, embodying the depth of feeling that pours out during the recording. There's a certain urgency to the musician immediacy that comes from being in a room full of people who understand what it means to create together. The track 'Stranger' is imbued with an intimate, communal spirit, while 'Torn & in Ashes' builds on layers of banjo and mandolin, giving it a rich, earthy feel. Even as the sounds shift, there's an underlying consistency in the raw honesty of Sparhawk's voice and the way the band responds to it. Overall, the record a sense of continuity, reminding us that music, when made with those closest to you, becomes a vessel for lasting memories and support.

The Anxiety Of Symmetry

Anxiety Of Symmetry I
Anxiety Of Symmetry II
Review: Bill Orcutt's approach to the guitar feels less like playing and more like detonating: a flurry of stabbing phrases, mangled blues motifs and broken time signatures that teeter constantly on the edge of collapse. It's a sound he's refined over decades, from his early days in Miami's punk and noise scenes to his present-day experiments in live-coded digital abstraction. This new album, which features two versions of 'Anxiety of Symmetry', finds him at his most feral and funny in years i a twisted tribute to the clunky MIDI guitar presets of the 90s, rendered via his cracked-software experiments with two fifteen-minute compositions built from a single concept: six sung numbers, each mapped precisely to pitches in a major scale. These micro-phrases ('1-2', '1-2-3', and so on) repeat and multiply, creating swirling polymetric harmonies that flicker between gentle hypnosis and algorithmic overload. Female voices loop in cycles of uneven length, forming structures reminiscent of Glass's Einstein on the Beach, but without its theatricalityithis is music of obsession, not spectacle. The emotional register is unusually soft for Orcutt, but behind the surface calm lies a meticulous compulsion. In an essay of the same name, he aligns this method with "Just Right" OCD, proposing a feedback loop between mental fixation and machine logic. What emerges isn't ambient in any passive sense, but a kind of orderly unravelingicomposition as therapeutic ritual, echoing the recursive spirals of Hanne Darboven or the trance-state potential of counting itself.

The Four Louies I
The Four Louies II
Review: San Francisco-based experimentalist Bill Orcutt pushes further into his self-styled minimal rock terrain with this new release on Fake Estates, his second full-length of 2025. Built around two tracks, 'The Four Louies I' and 'II', it splices Steve Reich's 'Four Organs' with the distorted ghost of Richard Berry's 'Louie Louie', reimagining both as pulsing, off-key suites of feedback, Farfisa drone and fractured rhythm. It's raw but surprisingly meditative: Reich's famously static harmonic structure folds around the mangled spirit of garage rock, with Orcutt teasing out weird resonances between proto-punk and process music. The sound shifts between hypnotic and deranged, balancing reverence and noise. You catch snatches of the Kingsmen's slack energy; then it unravels into metallic squall. There's humour and precision here, but also real intuition i a freeform rock album that wrings unexpected emotion from two of the most misunderstood works of postwar America. It doesn't so much bridge high and low art as short-circuit them. With this latest release, Orcutt adds another dissonant jewel to a catalogue that never stops interrogating what music is even for.

Review: We find ourselves lost in kosmische textures, dark jazz motifs and brushup drums, as Middlesbrough's Ivan The Tolerable (Oli Heffernan) edges us ever deeper into his singular sonic world with An Orphan Form, where wide scapes and underbrushed moodiness leaves us in an identifiable yet not entirely placeable place. There's a sense of constant movementicircular rather than linearias the music unfurls like a dream slipping just out of reach. Synth lines wobble and stretch, field recordings emerge from the mist, and the sounds of nature act as subtle anchors amid the abstraction. It's a spiritual detour after the cheekier tonalities of his various earlier cassette albums for the likes of Cruel Nature and Ack! Ack! Ack!.

Review: Recorded at Portland's Type Foundry studio i where American instrumental experimental rockers Grails' earliest records were born i Miracle Music is the band's 12th long player and weaves acoustic and electric guitars, synths, brass, woodwinds, percussion and samples into an expansive, cinematic tapestry. Drawing from early industrial textures, classical elegance and psychedelic ambiance, the album crafts a heavy yet ethereal mood. Tracks like 'Silver Bells' pulse with vintage electro urgency, while others invoke a sense of reflection and grandeur. This balance of boundary-pushing intensity and airy melodicism reflects Grails' quarter-century commitment to reinvention. As both a nod to their origins and a bold step forward, Miracle Music stands as one of Grails' most personal and profound releases i a key to their ability to transform eclectic influences into something singular and deeply moving.
