Review: Adesse Versions returns to Numbers, following the runaway success of last year's Pride 12". "That's What Friends Are For" is a sturdy late-night builder, with the German producer gradually ratcheting up the tension via sleazy, spoken word vocals, carefully placed effects, and a muscular, Sound Factory style groove. The latter gets more space to breathe on the accompanying dub. Flip for the deeper, breezier "In The Sticks", which adds African percussion to a Ron Trent and Chez Damier-style house groove. The Afro influences and shimmering chords take pride of place on the alternative "No Kicks" mix.

Life Code
Review: UK producer Deadboy will always be synonymous with Jackmaster's Numbers label, having inaugurated it back in 2010 with the one sided If U Want Me 12" back in 2010. It's fair to say Numbers rise since then has been stratospheric and along the way they managed to coax more killer dancefloor material out of man like Deadboy on a roughly annual basis. The suitably titled Return offers a true display of Deadboy's production palette, with a title track that could feasibly suit a film soundtrack. "Des Niles" meanwhile is reminiscent of the 16bit club stylings of label mate Redinho and the B Side brandishes some classic Deadboy hybrid dancefloor slayers in the form of "YHVH" and "Life Code".

Wish U Were Here

Ain't Gonna Lie
Review: Excellent release here from Deadboy on Glaswegian imprint Numbers, who returns to the imprint after dropping their first ever 12" in early 2010. The Brighton based producer serves up epic A-Side jam "Wish U Were Here", which locks into a 4/4 pulse with euphoric Virgo-style synths and a deftly tweaked vocal snippet - solid end of night tackle right here! On the flip you'll find "Here 4 U" and "Ain't Gonna Lie", with the former's rolling congas and snare patterns complemented by the latter's syrupy vocals, pinball percussion and straight up garage rhythms. Serious heat once again from the Numbers crew.

Unnatural
Review: Numbers aren't giving much away about the identity of Deejay Deer - unless, of course, he is genuinely a forest-dwelling animal with a sideline in synth-laden late night house, as their amusing press release claims - but in many ways it doesn't really matter. Both tracks here are superb, with "Natural" offering a fizzing, melodious take on deep house with clear Floating Points, Tiger & Woods and Joy Orbison influences. There's also a touch of Caribou about virtual flipside "Unantural", whose fluid waves of synthesizer and exotic, almost psychedelic chords seductively crash over a wide-eyed, loose-limbed jazz groove. It's impressively produced, suggesting this is the work of a seasoned pro rather than a little-known newcomer.

The 604 (6:00)
Review: Given their previously proclaimed love of ghetto house and its' various similarly minded offshoots, its little surprise to find Glasgow's Numbers crew putting out a "greatest hits" EP from long-serving Chicago producer (and former Dance Mania regular) DJ Deeon. The four cuts that make up Deeon Doez Deeon are not necessarily meant to be his finest moments - though they are all killer - but instead represent the Numbers' crew's favourites. There's plenty to get excited about, from the organ craziness, bumpin' beats and classic disco vocals of "2 Be Free" and blistering "House-O-Matic", to the classic, cut-up vocals and stuttering, ghetto rhythms of "Freak Like Me" (first released way back in 1996).

Trife (part II)
Review: If you've attended a Numbers rave, boat party or festival stage over the course of 2013 you've probably left craving the Gospel-powered beast with the killer vocal hook that Jackmaster or Spencer dropped. Months of singing "Walk On In, Walk On In, Walk On In..." to yourself can now be consigned to memory as the Glaswegian powerhouse finally issue the track in question, "Walk On In" a collaboration between Berlin-dwelling Welshman and Ratcatcher, and it has modern club classic written all over it. Daneeka's well honed dancefloor versatility is demonstrated on the flip with "Trife Pt. II" a darker and more subtle house production.

Paname (Piano version)
Review: Always adept at delivering hooky, attention-grabbing house music for all manner of crowds, Doc Daneeka is at once more for Numbers, with the piano-led charge of "Treptow" marking a particularly direct approach for the producer. Using a one-chord stab throughout, Daneeka clearly knows a thing or two about making the most out of a few core elements in this finely balanced deep house tryst. "Paname (Piano Version)" on the other hand has a more leftfield line in rasping percussion arranged into sharp lines of rhythm, while the titular piano lingers more in the distance compared to the lead tune.

Review: Numbers welcome Bristol's experimental artist FFT for this three-piece suite 'Disturb Roqe'. Each one writhing in variation but playing off similar element elements, ingredients and beat patterns, 'Disturb Roqe 2' deftly pokes the electro underbelly with contemporary textures and switches. 'Disturb 4' takes a dubbier route with cavernous space, subverted bleeps and jazzier chords while 'Disturb 5' ups the tempo and brings a little garage-influence skip to the momentum. Disturbingly creative.

Ovale
Review: With world-conquering tracks from Deadboy, Jamie xx and Mosca already under their belts this year, the latest release from the Numbers stable sees Belgian duo GoldFFinch take centre stage with a double header of acid-tinged bass tracks aimed squarely at the dancefloor. "Red Mask" sounds like the kind of raw analogue jam Boddika is becoming legendary for, with 303 flecks intertwined around its ghettotech influenced staccato vocal samples and bone dry percussion. B-Side "Ovale" is less furiously paced, but similarly bass heavy, utilising simple 808 beats over its huge low end, accented by some pitched down cut up vocals and oddball melodies which are particularly reminiscent of Claude VonStroke's tongue-in-cheek approach to house music. Another huge release from one the year's most consistent labels.

Power Flower (5:35)
Review:  Bryan Kessler has already released on labels like Get Physical, but this outing for Numbers really sees him prove his worth as a techno producer. The emphasis here is on grimy warehouse techno; it starts with the woozy chords and insistent stabs of "Super Boo" before heading into a scuzzy direction on "Hi How Are You", where dollops of dirty bass and some crowd whoops prevail. Air raid sirens, train shrieks and tough drums come together to create a killer title track and it's only on the final track "Power Flower'' - where Kessler rattles snares over a toy-town synth - that some sense of melody appears.

Spreo Superbus
Spreo Superbus (Actress remix)
Spreo Superbus (Girl Unit remix)
Review: Ever committed to their position on the wild frontier of glossy party sounds, the first Numbers release of 2012 reveals a brand new production duo from London who go by the name of Kodiak. Kicking off on a jagged UK Funky rhythm, "Spreo Superbus" piles on the drama from the first bars as whipcrack snare delays and rushy synth pitch bends lead to the first of many drops. The production is immaculate, packing scores of detail into the framework, from ranging synths to a multitude of vocal snippets, off beat bass stabs and clattering yet precise percussion. Tempering those rambunctious attributes, Actress snakes in with his Uraeus remix and pares things down instantly with a low slung beat, spacious chords and vaporous hisses. It's not until the twilight of the track that a nasty bassline comes crawling in to ruffle the feathers of its sonic compatriots. Girl Unit isn't pulling any punches with his reworking, riding a smoother beat but keeping the delirious synth energy of the original intact before slamming down into an electro-fied freak-out full of edgy ripples of melody. While the remixes do well to give credit to the source, it's the original that really shines on this release for sheer flair and studio prowess, not to mention a deadly knack for creating hype out of pure digital freakery.

Malon (feat Marcus Price) (5:51)
Pantalon (4:26)
Review: Here's something of a pleasant surprise: Studio Barnhus co-founder Kornel Kovacs turning up on Glasgow's masters of all things dancefloor-friendly, Numbers. While there's a little more of a garage swing to opener "Lighthouse" - think darting string samples, booming sub-bass and energetic deep house drums - the Swede doesn't seem to have wandered that far off-piste. So, we get some undeniably classy, jazz-flecked deep house (the rubbery and flexible "Gangsta"), a surging, saucer-eyed dose of piano revivalism ("Malon", featuring Marcus Price, and some suitably jumpy drums), and, best of all, the late '80s Paradise Garage Latin house brilliance of "Pantalon". Stellar stuff, all told.

Review: This Numbers debut by Lanark Artefax is an ode to a waterfall above the Scottish village of New Lanark and comes after his breakout offering on Whities as well as a busy run of live shows that make reference to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Bass heavy and melodic, with falling keys and glassy pads raining down the face of each track, "Moo Orphaned Drift" has a cosmic air to it while opening cut "Corra Linn" is an IDM drum flurry, but it is closer "Ferthenheap" which makes the most impact; it's an ambient, emotionally devastating neo-classical piano piece of the highest order.

Acidspix (7:42)
Review: Italian techno demi-god Lory D returns with the third instalment of the Strange Days series for Glasgow's Numbers! This guy is simply unstoppable and it's simply incredible to hear how he has managed to keep his sound so damn contemporary over the years. Oh, and it's rumoured that he used to be one of Aphex Twin's favourite techno artists back in the day! "Gm-HF" is a heads-down kinda nodder, packing a humongous bassline for the peak time floor, while "Acidspix", as the name suggests, is a beautifully odd 303 jam with enough stability to make it a perfectly usable dancefloor weapon. What more can we say? It's totally unmissable and warmly recommended.

Ostia Girl
Review: Italian techno legend Lory D returns to Scotland's Numbers for the second instalment of the Strange Days series. Acid is the word here, and "B-I-132" sees Lory inject his jacked-out techno trademark over a nasty, shuffling beat that builds pace and energy right up to its end. On the B-Side, "Acidattak" mutates the 303 further still and creates a cluster bomb reminiscent of his old-school warehouse days. "Ostia Girl" takes things to more experimental territories, where chopped up female vocals are displaced over broken beats and irregular percussions. It's a pleasure to see one of techno's unsung heroes both following tradition and creating something fresh and mesmerising.

Acid CLX22 (7:01)
Mg Comp Strngd (8:42)
Suoneria (4:46)
Review: Glaswegian imprint Numbers returns with one of their all time favourites in the form of Roman techno legend Lory D. Chief engineer of the 'Sound Of Rome' alongside fellow cohorts Leo Anibaldi and the inimitable Donato Dozzy: who he played a rare back to back set with at 2016's Berlin Atonal. From being the first ever guests at one of their first parties back in the day, to this release: the fifth edition in his know renowned Strange Days series of EPs. The elusive and mysterious figure (and Sounds Never Seen boss) starts off with the restrained and stripped back techno tool "Deep Acoustic" which is the kind of well executed groove that proves less is more. There's then the typical energy flash of the Italian on the mentalist groove of "Acid CLX22". On the flip, more warped and jacking techno shenanigans continue on the crazy "Mg Comp Strngd" while the deep and hypnotic cyclicality of "Suoneria" with its mesmerising and trance inducing melody proves once again that, indeed: Italians do it better.

Sq11 (7:43)
Review: The Strange Days continue for Numbers who grip a fourth clutch of Roman techno magnificence from the master Lory D. The Glasgow collective's relationship with Lorenzo D'Angelo predates the birth of Numbers with Lory D material issued on the Jackmaster's now-defunct Wireblock label, and there was much rejoicing when the Strange Days series commenced with NMBRS013 back in 2011. These infrequent transmissions have proved to be some of the most incendiary techno issued over the past 5 years and this 4th volume is no different. Described as "three caustic symphonies from the burning ashes of Rome," Numbers are dead on the money as this is face melting material, especially closing track "Sq11".

Tribalonios (5:20)
Review: Long before he began work on the collaborative Tiger & Woods project, Marco Passarani was much loved for his solo productions, which effortlessly joined the dots between techno, electro, Italo-disco and synth-funk. Analog Fingerprints, his first solo single since 2011, is a thrilling blast from the past. Those who dug his earlier productions on Nature will love the thrilling alien synthesizer motifs, sweaty drums and throbbing acid flashes of "Quarto" - think vintage R&S Records stompers fused with wild electronic disco abandon - while "Tribalonios" feels like a long-lost new beat slammer pitched up to suit house clubs. For those who fancy a cheery chunk of synthesizer-heavy dancefloor bliss, opener "Wonky Wonky Wonky" should more than tick those boxes.

Prang (feat Huerco S)
Sisu (feat Cucina Povera)
Review: Perko is one of those newer-school experimental artists whose fingers straddle many pies, but who nevertheless refuses to allow this inner tendency towards versatility to hold him back. The FELT label owner has welcomed artists as far-flung as Civilistjavel! to Moxie into his inner circle; and the fruits of this open-mindedness are more than translated into his latest EP for Glaswegian dance legends Numbers. 'Prang' errs on the side of playfulness, giving some hot seconds of pure danceable flavour. Huerco S lends his usually-texturally-rich addprod to the nominal A-sider, a rather impressive future-garage-acid cut that recalls some of Objekt's earlier stuff, while regular collaborator and mournful vocalist-producer Cucina Povera crops up on the ambient dub plunger-into-the-sound that is 'Sisu'.

Mystery Girl (Set Me Free) (feat Seiji Bassrub)
Review: This release sees Jackmaster's always on-point Numbers label with their first reissue, and they've pulled off something quite special with this reissue of Pierre's Pfantasy Club's seminal "Mystery Girl (Set Me Free)". It's a full on piece of vintage analogue 303 jack, characterised by its synthesised slap bass and catchy-as-hell vocal. Considering this is vintage acid house, the 303 line is actually quite restrained, only drifting in briefly, but is made no less furious by the cut up vocals that see the track out. The B-Side sees veteran UK producer Seiji provide a "Bassrub" of the track. It's actually incredibly sensitive to the original, letting it do its own thing for the most part, forgoing his usual funky tempos, but cutting the vocals up further and adding some devastating subs that will blow out bass-bins everywhere.

Review: Glaswegian imprint Numbers maintain the release pressure that's built up a head of dizzying steam in 2011 with their 20th drop being a label debut from Randomer. The Norf Londoner's musical path began with jungle and that's more than apparent on the title track "Real Talk" which will get a certain SoYoer called Blawan worried about his status as the best drum programmer in town. It's the sort of disjointed, thumping house track that provides immediate gratification, especially when the sub destroying bass purge comes through. "Lime Pie" is equally thrilling, gradually aligning into a ruffed up 303 flex and concrete thick drums, whilst "Stalker" throws pots and pans into the rhythmic equation with neck snapping results. Possibly our favourite NMBRS drop to date.

Review: There's a depth and mastery of technique to the eight tracks on Redinho's long awaited EP on Numbers which makes it barely believable that it's the UK producer's debut release. The introductory crisp finger snaps and sub bass flutters on "Boy Racer" contrasts nicely with the arpeggiated streaks of 8 bit light that slip between the gaps of the speaker-punishing harsh step groove of "Lightning Strikes". Redinho adopts a pan Asian bump on the title track "Bare Blips" with Chinese dulcimer notes bouncing with melodic intent off the rolling beat. Amidst this basement business, Redinho has the cojones to drop "Pitter Patter" three minutes of blissful, mellifluous organic electronica which astounds with every listen. On the flip the peak time grime nastiness of "Banger" sits next to the schizoid 23rd Century techno triple step hybrid of "Nuff Prang" and the low end dancehall horrorcore of "Mo Brap". It's not hard to see why everyone from HudMo to Anthony Shake Shakir is supporting this release.

A full-throttle audio rainbow but instead of a pot of gold sitting pretty at the end, there's massive bucket of bass. Heaviness doesn't begin to describe its visceral nature. "Slasherr", meanwhile, sees more classic Rustie theatrics - all halfstep and warped and twisted, as its title suggests, it will indeed tear your floor apart.

Review: Numbers present a very special release from old friend SOPHIE. On the A we have a fulfilled prophecy... Back in 2015 SOPHIE stated that no one could remix her, unless it's Autechre. Five years later, they delivered. Slowing SOPHIE's subverted take on classic NY house down to an 1989-style, B-side dubby trip, the pioneers keep that riff bubbling subtly but bring her voice to the fore in a sultry, 6AM way. Flip for another special as a bonus digital track 'Unisil' brings a brittle technoid twist on wax for the first time. This can make you feel better.

Review: Whilst Bipp has arrived out of nowhere, the fact vaguely mysterious UK producer Sophie is releasing on Glaswegian label Numbers should not come as a surprise. Numbers figurehead Jackmaster has been a fan of Sophie's music for a while, caning that Auntie Flo remix from last year and providing an official dub version Sophie's ubiquitous Huntleys & Palmers release "Nothing More To Say". With a clear mastery of dancefloor sounds filled with vivid colour, Sophie's Numbers debut makes even more sense given the label's last hyperactive release from Rustie. Lead track "Bipp" sounds like 90s diva house mangled and applied to a trap template, whilst "Elle" swings with a drunken sizzurp swagger.

Hard
Review: Proving that a track doesn't have to be lengthy and laborious experience, SOPHIE comes bowling up to Numbers with a second dose of rapid fire neon-lit madness to get heads a-spinning while marking another step towards a full-blown J-pop-meets-electronica zeitgeist. As singular as his approach is, you can hear how the beats powering SOPHIE's tracks reach out to bass weight ravers and teeny boppers alike. "Lemonade" is positively cheeky in its deployment of catchy hooks, garish choruses and occasional bursts of monstrous bass, sounding utterly futuristic in its vision of where chart-minded dance music might well head. "Hard" takes a more obtuse approach that actually seems to distil some of Plaid's starry-eyed melodic wonder and Aphex Twin's Drukqs-era sound design, while the lyrics nod to S&M in the most sinisterly cartoonish way possible. As such, it's a triumphant collision of styles and ideas.

Portland (Tuff City Kids TB remix)
Review: Second time around for Sparky's "Portland", which impressed with its baggy positivity, alien synths and retro-futurist swing when it first appeared on Numbers last December. Here, Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer don their Tuff City Kids guise to deliver two excellent reworks. The Looney Mix is particularly potent, transforming the Glaswegian producer's original into a Belgian hardcore-influenced chunk of floor-friendly house complete with classic rave breakbeats, bouncy piano stabs and well-worn late '80s/early '90s samples. There's more wide-eyed rave revivalism on their TB Mix, which features a sliver of acid amongst the looped riffs, tough kicks and pitched-down amen breaks. It's probably the more straightforward of the two versions, and is every bit as playable as its' sanity-testing predecessor.

Review: Former Optimo [Espacio] studio collaborator Dave Clark has impressed since re-launching his little-known '90s production alias, Sparky, for Numbers. His 2013 doublepack, Portland, has been remixed multiple times, while his recent Tapes release for Rubadub - based on rediscovered recordings from 1994 - has been getting plenty of heat. Here he delivers two new tracks, beginning with the sprightly, synthesizer-heavy Italo-disco-meets-Detroit techno workout "Signals". Full of shimmering synth lines, bubbling bottom end and attractive melodic hooks, it's arguably his most accessible track to date. Flip for "Tigress", an aggressive, distorted and altogether more robust dancefloor shuffler seemingly influenced by both classic loop techno and '80s industrial funk.

Portland (Ricardo Villalobos remix - part 1)
Portland (Ricardo Villalobos remix - part 2)
Review: Glasgow crew Numbers toast their tenth anniversary with this special reissue project of Portland from local production legend Dave Clark, replete with Riccardo Villalobos remixes! Released back in 2002 on Numbers progenitor Stuff Records, "Portland" grew to be a bonafide anthem at Numbers parties over the years and a chance conversation with DJ Pete informed Jackmaster and co. that a certain Ricardo Villalobos was crazy for this slab of deep, almost Drexciyan electro. The idea of reissuing the track on Numbers replete with a Riccy V remix was apparently a long held pipe dream which came to fruition thanks to some help from Gerd 'The Word' Janson. The resultant two part 30 minute Villalobos remix was recorded live in one take and can apparently be played at either 33 or 45 rpm. This reissue is made all the more special by two previously unreleased Sparky productions that Clark recorded during the Portland sessions back in 1998.

Review: It would be fair to say that both of Denis Sulta's 12" singles on Dixon Avenue Basement Jams are "in-demand", commanding surprising prices online. It's likely that this first outing on Numbers - a single-track salvo pressed in limited quantities - will go the same way. It's typically of his analogue-rich, retro-futurist sound, with starry, Detroit-influenced synth lines and intergalactic melodies riding a virtual wave of drum machine hits and skittish cymbals. It feels like an early '90s British experiment in fusing the best of house and techno, but that's no bad thing. It's certainly bristling with late night positivity.

Multi Ordinal Tracking Unit (City Of Quartz remix)
Review: While by no means as prolific in their output as last year, the quality of Numbers releases this year has certainly remained a constant. Here the Glasgow operation reissues what they describe as "a secret weapon and personal favourite" in "Multi Ordinal Tracking Unit" from late 90s techno outfit Unspecified Enemies. The lengths the label have gone to in order to secure this reissue makes us think Jackmaster and co. set up Numbers with the specific intention of one day having the release in their discography. Made with the most basic of equipment in a North East London bedroom by the duo of Simon Whalley and Louis Digital, "Multi Ordinal Tracking Unit" was subsequently embraced by everyone from Underground Resistance to Surgeon. Crucially, Rubadub's Club 69 resident Martin McKay also caned it and ingrained it in the young memories of the Numbers troupe. Fully remastered by original cutting engineer, Christoph Grote-Beverborg at Dubplates & Mastering, the track retains all its hard edged funk today and comes backed with a "City Of Quartz" remix from Louis Digital himself.

Lifestyles Of The MiniDisc Era
Review: Back in 2012, Glasgow operation put their reissue hats on to present a new edition of Multi Ordinal Tracking Unit, "a secret weapon and personal favourite" from late 90s UK techno types Unspecified Enemies that the label's founders all experienced in their formative years at Club 69. Some two years on and with Numbers now a globally recognised label, unreleased material from Unspecified Enemies pair Louis Digital and CiM features as the label's final release of 2014. Lead cuts "Ms.45" and "Chip Mode" have been sourced from a tape CiM and Digital sent to Rubadub back in '99 with DJ Chip's Dancemania classic Imported Booty Music the apparent influence here. It's quite evident too in the frenzied and furious tempo Unspecified Enemies implement throughout the record with the final superbly titled "Lifestyles Of The MiniDisc Era" a real fckn highlight.
