Cortex Shedding (5:46)
Wave Impartial (4:54)
Cyclic Shadows (5:16)
Pineal Discord (6:07)
Review: The Berlin based, Australian producer Patrick Carrera is up next on Los Angeles based Modularz. The Paranoid Dancer and MUUI boss follows up some great releases on Mark Broom's Beardy Man on the Unscripted EP. He begins with a brazen tribute to the raw minimalism of early Regis (circa Gymnastics) on "Cortex Shedding" while the remainder of the EP conforms to label boss Developer's modus operandi. From the tunnelling warehouse energy of "Cyclic Shadows" or the classic dystopian futurism of "Pineal Discord" which nails that classic Jeff Mills style of old - complete with hypnotic chime melodies and intricate rhythmic arrangements.

Foreign Drum Sequence 1 (6:47)
Foreign Drum Sequence 2 (6:11)
Foreign Drum Sequence 3 (6:21)
Foreign Drum Sequence 4 (5:13)
Review: Club ready DJ tools by Brenda main man CNCPT for Developer's go to label for peak time assault weapons. "Foreign Drum Sequence 1" gets stuck in straight away, this one is an absolutely ferocious Berghain ready slammer that ticks all the right boxes. "Foreign Drum Sequence 2" is a bit more restrained and we appreciate the hypnotic and cyclical nature of it that's reminiscent of classic Ben Long/Space Djz kind of stuff. On the flip "Foreign Drum Sequence 3" equally shows some restraint but works those hypnotic elements real well and that's where CNCPT really finds his sound on this release. The final track goes back to the steely and muscular techno sounds of the first track, but with more funk injected into it.

Carbanak (6:25)
Dark Hydrus (6:28)
Data Storm (6:12)
Sand Worm Team (7:04)
Review: Spanish twosome Crime as Service are fast becoming a reputable source of dark, breathless and moody techno. Here they make their vinyl bow on Modularz following the release of digital-only outings on Dynamic Reflection and Legal Alien. As usual, they go in hard via 'Carabank', a thrillingly murky slab of pitch-black, kick-drum driven techno filth, before opting for a more tribal techno vibe on the more locked-in and hypnotic 'Dark Hyrdus'. Over on the reverse, 'Data Storm' sees them pepper a thunderous lo-fi techno groove with aural space debris, while 'Sand Worm Team' is another slamming tribal techno workout.

Jive Kept Me Live (5:37)
Over Cold Seas (5:38)
Headhunter (5:39)
Savage Nights (6:28)
Review: Developer is back on Modularz with more steel-clad techno machinations for your toolkit. "Jive Kept Me Live" has a stern cyclical core, but there's a rich spectrum of tonality pulsing around this rhythmic focus to keep your brain twitching as heartily as your feet. "Over Cold Seas" centres around a particularly unsettling synth hook that sounds as though it's trying to punch through from another plane of existence, and "Headhunter" brings some more overtly melodic themes to the forefront. "Savage Nights" closes things out with the kind of unnerving techno incantations that you might expect to hear from Terrence Dixon - anyone who knows their techno knows that's high praise indeed.

Key Maker (6:50)
Spiral Form (6:49)
Ascender Calling (6:50)
The Sphere (6:37)
Review: There's always been a bit of a "no frills" feel to Developer's output. The Los Angeles producer specializes in the kind of functional, no-nonsense techno that comes into its own when played over booming club sound systems. The four tracks featured on this latest EP fall into the same bracket. With the exception of the melodious, chiming closer "The Sphere", what you get from these Dispatches From L.A is thunderous, in-your-face beats, unsettling looped riffs, snaking modular electronics, pitched-down vocal snippets, and occasional mind-altering acid lines. In other words, this is straight-up club techno for concrete-clad warehouses, dark and dusty basements, and wayward mornings after.

Review: You'll be hard pushed to find a producer as dedicated to his cause as Modularz boss Adrian Sandoval; instrumental in the development of LA's techno scene, Sandoval's tireless production ethic as Developer has seen him release over 30 records in the past six years so it feels like we are due an album from the man. Unsurprisingly, In Pure Form runs deep with tunnelling DJ tools with the full digital version of the album packing a rather impressive 25 tracks. This second of three 12" samplers for the album covers "In Pure Form" through tracks five to eight and does show that Sandoval can implement a lot of sonic diversity to the functional techno track.

Hexican (7:29)
When They Come Knocking (7:16)
She Says Shes Good (8:29)
Black Oceanz (6:58)
Review: Developer heads up the Modularz label and now returns to it with some increased BPMS and sounds that are more dark and driving, tribal and funk-infused than before. This hugely prolific producer has put out more than 100 records in the last 10 years and always finds new sonic territory to explore each time. 'Hexican 75' kicks off with some blisteringly quick deep techno rhythms, 'When They Come Knocking' is glitchy and dubby and 'She Says She's Good' then taps into more mind-melting synth and drum tapestries before 'Black Oceanz' goes sub aquatic with heavy, rolling drums and shards of light pairing the ocean surface.

Panotronix
Review: Developer is a core part of the LA underground not just known for his work as a DJ and producer, but also his vital events which have breathed fresh inspiration into the scene. He also heads up the Modularz label and returns to it here with four more future-facing sounds that take techno into new realms. 'Ethnicanz' is rife with eerie synths that have an impish spirit. 'Modetrex' marries firmly rooted and ice-cold drum loops with more evocative synth motifs that lure you in for the chase. 'Viamont' is dense, like being trapped in the midst of a swarm of squawking birds, then 'Panotronix' completes this chilly retro-future offering with more stark synth loops that are unresolved and keep you on edge.

Developer - "Mover Of The Mercury"
Developer - "Gaining"
Elyas - "Camberwell"
Ascion - "The Exporter"
Review: Modularz' commitment to straight up yet intricately textured techno continues, with part 2 of its tenth entry featuring label head Developer joined by another two kindred spirits in the form of Ascion and Elyas. Developer takes up the A-side with two tracks; "Mover Of The Mercury" combines linera, tribal drumming and bleak, distant drones, while "Gaining" is imbued with a surprisingly funky character a la Gesloten Cirkel, as dark synth horns snake around precision drums. On the flip, Elyas' "Camberwell" may seem to take its name from one of South London's more picturesque locations, but the slamming techno stabs and granite drums are anything but polite, recalling Shed's Equalized material; Ascion rounds things off with the trippiest cut on the record, as savage waveforms twist themselves around abstract atonal beeps.

Developer - "Revister"
Developer - "Edificio" (Silent Servant remix)
Developer - "More Seduction"
Fanon Flowers - "Prado Obscuro"
Review: US label Modularz returns with another split 12" boasting a remix from Sandwell District don Silent Servant. The Revisited EP opens with the wonderfully unhinged techno of "Revister" by Modularz regular Developer. This vies for your attention on an A-Side boasting a remix of Developer's "Edificio" by the aforementioned Silent Servant, which chugs along with rasping hats and cavernous low frequencies. The last time we heard Fanon Flowers the American producer was TCB on a sumptuous EP for the Sect imprint, and here the producer maintains that form with the moody late night jack of "Prado Obscuro". This is accompanied by the thick loopy melodies of Developer's "More Seduction", rounding off another killer release from a label that is fast gaining a place in Juno's affections.

Developer - "The Ring For Madness"
NX1 - "MZ2"
Developer - "More Matter"
Adriana Lopez - "Estructura"
Review: As his Modularz series continues unabated, Developer drafts in another two friends for some diverse techno excursions. The man himself kicks things off with the creepy and cavernous "The Ring For Madness", using a menacing melodic loop to cycle over booming kicks and gaseous hits. NX1's "MZ2" is a thoroughly strict affair, with a lonesome kick running to catch up with hats whispering in the far, far distance, in a similar fashion to the equally hard boiled minimalism of Developer's "More Matter". Adriana Lopez warms things up, relatively speaking, with a melodic chord that pulses like a lighthouse through the middle of an equally reverb drenched grey and stormy techno workout.

Developer - "Sequence 85"
Developer - "Sequence 88"
Psyk - "Transito"
Rhomb - "Reboot"
Review: Creeping ever closer towards their third year of existence, Modularz have remained steadfast in their aesthetic approach, deftly combining the dynamism of straight up techno with an intricately textured approach that has proved enduringly rewarding. Label boss Developer once again features prominently on this Part One 12" of their tenth entry, contributing two A Side cuts to the face down contributions from Psyk and Rhomb. The expansive bassline to the opening track "Sequence 85" practically consumes you, with Developer's subsequent production "Sequence 88" is markedly sparser, allowing the rigid percussion and booming kicks centre stage. Last seen on Mote Evolver, Spaniard Psyk adds further balance with the subaqueous dub techno of "Transito" whilst the unknown quantity Rhomb is on electrifying form with the Mike Parker-esque "Reboot".

Developer - "Dirty Drive"
Developer - "Dirty Drive 2"
Developer - "Dirty Drive" (Shifted remix)
Stanislav Tokachev - "Building Peaks"
Review: For the second instalment in Developer's July emissions, there's four more po-faced techno workouts to be enjoyed for those who want their 4/4 focused and unforgiving. "Dirty Drive" sees Developer stretching to work a melody into his machinery, coming out with a metallic dub chord drowning in its own echo, while "Dirty Drive 2" adds some complexity to the musicality and creates an utterly engrossing hook in the process. Shifted's remix keeps a careful distance between the clean beat and the murky textures of the dubby elements, but for a real lesson in refined techno composition head straight to Stanislav Tokachev's "Building Peaks". Simplicity doesn't come more captivating than that synth line.

Population One - "Code Of Conduct" (5:08)
Population One - "Concrete Playground" (4:34)
Terrence Dixon - "Touching Bass" (4:09)
Terrence Dixon - "The Beholder" (4:24)
Review: It's a good thing that Terrence Dixon wasn't being serious when he announced that he's stopped making music. In this day and age, he is the one true pioneer left in Detroit, and his utterly singular brand of techno is an essential part of our daily existence here at HQ. This time, Dixon returns under his own name and under his most successful alias, Population One, on one split EP for Developer's Modularz label. "Code Of Conduct" and "Concrete Playground" represent the Population One side, the first tune being a subdued kick filled with cavernous space above it while the latter is more classic Population One thanks to those bizarre melodic twists. Dixon serves up "Touching Bass" and "The Beholder" on the flip, two jazzy techno sculptures that are instantly recognizable as his own. Recommended, as always.

The Drifter (7:27)
Last Seen Leaving (6:41)
Never Somewhere (6:11)
Review: Aside from his own Edit Select Records, Anthony MacKinnon aka Edit Select has been a big player in some very big labels like Prologue and Ostgut Ton throughout the years. The present Modularz has also been a core driver of the man's deep-minded techno frameworks, and this new EP feels like a return to form. Opening the skies is "The Drifter", a classic slice of headstrong techno spewing with bleeping atmospherics and propelled forwards by a sleek, tenebrous gust of ambience. On the flip, "Last Seen Leaving" heads deeper into the whirlpool thanks to a hypnotic groove, and "Never Somewhere" offers a much needed dose of acid to inject a little nerves into the equation. That's us enjoying ourselves in case you hadn't understood...

Exium - "Star Ancestors"
Exium - "Nebulae"
Elyas - "Surgery"
Elyas - "Take Off"
Review: When it comes to Modularz you always know what you're gonna get: techno. This split Specifics In Realism EP is the first time Exium has appeared on Developer and Fanon Flowers' label, and it's the third time for Elyas, whose next step can only be a solo 12" after two VA appearances on Modularz. It's business as usual for Exuim who provide "Star Ancestors" and "Nebulae", the first, a drubby and booming chunk of big room techno, while the other leans towards something more spacey. Elyas then provides a hissing, clav-clucking "Surgery" and a dank, suspense-themed "Take Off". Killer club cuts.

Review: Chicago's Zachary Lubin ha an album on the way and Modularz label owner has plucked some key cuts from it for this 49th release on his label. The style here is deep but deriving techno with plenty of fuzzy textures, subtle waves of static electricity and mind melting Millsian melodies over linear beats. That's best highlight by standout track 'Probe' while 'Omronicon' is more clean and crisp, with heavy weight kicks and bright bleeps getting you into a trance. Elsewhere there is more intensity on 'Vessel' and deep, dubby styles on 'Keeper.'

Petter B - "Global Edit"
Petter B - "Global Writes"
Rhomb - "Output"
Rhomb - "Glitch"
Review: Swedish producer Petter B has been knocking about for a few years now, releasing music for labels like Drumcode, and more recently, his own Bond. For this split EP on Developer's Modularz, he really lets loose, delivering two huge steel slabs of warehouse techno. On the flip is Rhomb, a fledging producer who debuted on Modularz last year providing one production to a four-track EP featuring Psyk and Developer. For this EP he delivers a steamy and dub-driven "Output", while "Glitch" is militant with a horror-thematic break down that's silenced by more booming techno beats. This is a huge record.

To The Sun
Moon Direction
Star Phases
Saturn Sequences
Review: Mental Disorder owner Reeko arrives on the Modularz label with a truly distinguished discography to his name, featuring several albums and notable contributions to Pole Recordings. Constellation Andromeda seems like a fine addition to this body of work, brandishing a quartet of productions that really show Jose Rico's range when it comes to sculpting techno from deep and hypnotic textures. You could easily mistake the gnawing opener "To The Sun" for a production from the Geophone camp, whilst "Moon Direction" nails that tunnelling techno sensation perfectly, contrasting nicely with the incandescent synthetics that glower throughout "Star Phases". To close, "Saturn Sequences" finds Rico tuning in a deeper, more introspective track that might just be our favourite here.

Transmisiones 1 (6:05)
Transmisiones 2 (5:35)
Transmisiones 3 (5:49)
Transmisiones 4 (5:53)
Review: Hector Sandoval's Tensal moniker has become synonymous with tenebrous, droned-out techno that punishes dancers and mutilates dance floors across the globe. The majority of his output has come through his own Tensal label, or the excellent Modularz where he returns to with the present Transmisiones Atlanticas A. The four bruisers are part of one vision, rather than split tracks, and there's a feeling of crescendo throughout the EP; from the head-first techno tool that is Part 1, to more concrete and bumpy flavours on Part 2, and the Regis-like stumbles of Part 3 and 4, the latter of which is the darkest of the four and probably the meanest, too.

Seeking Loyalty (5:57)
Distinction (5:58)
Next Form (6:18)
Obtain It (6:08)
Review: Having only just released an EP through Midgar, 2017 looks set to be a winning year for techno deviant Von Grall. The Semantica associate is up on Modularz this week, and from the tenebrous sounds of "Seeking Loyalty", it's clear that the producer is in absolutely no mood to stray outside of the techno framework. This is some pretty dark material. "Distinction" is another hefty roller of a tune, this time stripped-back to a hypnotic sequence of bleeps and airy pads while, on the flipside, "Next Form" bashes out a cacophonous flurry of electrifying tones, and "Obtain It" flutters its pulsating bass tones over a minimalistic array of 6am sonics. Nasty, unforgiving gear for the dancefloor.
