Review: With Kompakt shorthand for royalty-grade electronic music we definitely shouldn't need to sell this one. Sacramento, California duo Blank Gloss may be less familiar, though, albeit those paying attention to the label will no doubt remember their stunning 2021 debut for the imprint, 'Melt'. A showpiece for the beautiful piano and synth work of Morgan Fox and Patrick Hills' tranquil guitars, it truly stood out.
Cornered is the pair's third LP overall, and picks up where that predecessor left off, kind of. It certainly comes from around the same period, recorded in just two days of December 2020, but there's plenty of progress that you can hear on the album. While never ones to overfill things, what's here - instrumentally speaking - seems to shine like a candle surrounded by darkness. Not sparse, but precious, vulnerable, and intimate, allowing plenty of space for the melodies and movements to take hold of you.

Review: It's been a pleasure to see Guilherme 'Gui' Boratto's sound evolve and develop over the course of several albums for Kompakt since he announced his arrival with the classic debut set Chromophobia. Fans of the Brazilian artist's music will be fully aware with the different sounds he's touched on since that 2007 long player, and there's a confidence to the cohesive manner in which all are brought together on Abaporou, Boratto's fourth album. This double LP edition features only 8 of the 13 tracks that make up the album proper, but as you may expect Kompakt have handpicked those tracks best suited for dancefloor deployment, with lead single "Joker" and melodically rich "Indigo" among the highlights. The full album is included on CD format so wax heads can appreciate Abaporou in the manner Boratto intended.

Review: Moodmusic affiliate Dave DK is no stranger to Kompakt, having featured on several of their compilations over the years and done the odd remix. Their relationship is formalised here with the arrival of Val Maira, the Berlin producer's third album and a concerted attempt to go beyond the impressive production skills previously shown by Dave DK to offer "deeply personal expressiveness and emotional impact". Listening through the eleven tracks on this double LP edition, you'd have to say it's a success; Val Maira is rife with the kind of emotive electronics you expect from a Kompakt LP and is perfectly sequenced to run through a gamut of moods. A fine album from DDK.

Review: Producer Alexander P.J Geiger was very active during the noughties, releasing a string of singles and albums (both as Geiger and Nass) before all but disappearing from view. Fahrland is his latest artistic incarnation and this, the project's debut outing, marks the producer's first release for eight years. The title, Mixtape Volume 1, hints at the album's construction; this is a set of disparate tracks that showcase Geiger's ability to turn his hand to a myriad of genres. So becalmed ambient cuts are followed, in sequence, by tracks that variously doff a cap to Balearic synth-pop, lo-fi electronic soul, ultra-deep house, jammed-out intergalactic techno, krautrock, hip-hop and dream pop.

Review: With nearly 40 years experience as a producer, having collaborated with everyone from Holger Hiller, Moritz Von Oswald and Juan Atkins among others, Swiss legend Thomas Fehlmann presents Los Lagos ('The Lakes'). It's his seventh solo full-length (and fourth for Koelsch institution Kompakt), following his Berlin inspired 2010 LP Gute Luft. The multi-talented composer and long standing member of The Orb embarked on a deep journey of soul searching while recording the album - and in the process incorporated elements of art, disco, minimalism, jazz and funk. A collection of glacial and textural dub introversions as best exemplified on "Lowenzahnzimmer" or "Morrislouis", but he also makes room for moments of pulsating hypnotic dancefloor dynamics ("Triggerism") and moments of lush ambient bliss reminiscent of his work with Dr. Alex Patterson on "Geworden".

Review: Swedish producer Axel Willner has always seemed so comfortable with his working method and trademark sound - that "maximal" blend of warm loops, hypnotic rhythms and wide-eyed organic positivity - that it's something of a surprise to find that he initially struggled to find inspiration for this fourth full-length as The Field. Clearly, he found his mojo, because Cupid's Head is as intoxicating and mood enhancing as his three previous albums. His method and formula hasn't changed much, but when he's capable of producing such inspired gems as the organ-drenched "They Don't See Me", the heady title track and fuzzy, near ambient "No, No", why would it?

Review: In the words of Axel Willner himself regarding his fifth studio album "The Follower is about old myths, finding utopia and how mankind repeatedly makes the same mistakes over and over". The title track is fairly stomping acid techno that hypnotises you with its loopy and sinister repetition until the snare drum and organ sets in around the five minute mark; transforming the track dramatically. There's also some stylish electro-pop noir in the form of "Pink Sun" while "Monte Verita" or "Soft Streams" have that classic Kompakt sound ie: ethereal and dreamy house journeys. We particularly enjoyed the droney shoegaze electronics of "Raise The Dead" and the 14 minute long closing epic "Reflecting Lights", an ambient house journey that even The Orb would be impressed by.

Review: For his third full-length for the constantly enduring Kompakt label, Axel Willner has decided to take his enduring brand of Balearic loop techno to grandiose new heights. Sonically, the template remains the same - intoxicating layers of guitar, voice and ambient synth loops atop hypnotic dancefloor grooves - but the resultant tracks are just, well, bigger - cinematic, even. Given Willner's inherent skill at producing this kind of baggy, organic techno, the results are rarely less than impressive. As a result, Looping State of Mind makes for thoroughly enjoyable listening, simultaneously appearing ambitiously big and pleasantly intimate. He deserves enormous credit for pulling it off.

Review: Hard to come by on vinyl since its initial release in 2000, "Pop" is arguably the warmest and most alluring of all of Wolfgang Voigt's albums as Gas. On this fresh vinyl reissue it sounds better than ever, thanks in part to Kompakt's decicion to stretch it over three slabs of wax rather than two. Rich in opaque, slowly shifting pieces that combine toasty ambient electronics with subtle neo-classical movement and looped field recordings, "Pop" feels like an imagined soundtrack to a Sunday morning stumble through sun-soaked forests, undulating coastal paths and a picturesque German village whose residents are yet to wake up. Which, in our eyes at least, makes it particularly alluring.

Review: Kompakt continues to reissue the early, in-demand works of hypnotic ambient techno pioneer Wolfgang Voigt AKA Gas. This time it's "Konigsforst", an album that has been unavailable on vinyl since its' initial pressing on Mille Plateaux in 1998. Built around locked-in, soft-focus techno rhythms, drowsy neo-classical movements, densely layered samples and hazy, hard-to-define melodic elements, the album's eight tracks remain as potent now as they did 21 years ago. Voigt has made a lot of inspired music in his thickset "sound soup" style, but there's something extra-special about this "Konigsforst", which we'd describe as the audio equivalent of a sunrise stumble through an ancient German forest.
