Rosa Rugosa
Rosa Rugosa (12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: HES 045. Rel: 26 Oct 23

Experimental/Electronic
Rosa Rugosa (5:32)
Camelia (4:16)
Cassia (3:42)
Review: In the wake of The Knife, Olof Dreijer has been plenty busy behind the scenes and scattering hints of his incredible production for those paying attention. Now it feels like he's building to a wider profile breakthrough as he lands a knockout blow with this release on Hessle Audio. It's a maverick release, which is its pass into the curious sound world shaped out by Ben UFO, Pearson Sound and Pangaea, but equally it brings something new to the label. The joyous, colourful melodic daubs across the EP alone are something to make a dance collectively look up in wonder, with 'Camelia' being an especially beautiful, uplifting track to bring hope and positivity when so much club music tips towards the darkness.

Fena EP
Fena EP (12")

Deep Dubstep
Fena
Sickomode
Saat
Cawuso
Review: Kircaali-born producer Imperieux debuts on Hessle Audio with a wildly inventive four-tracker that folds Balkan heritage, rave memory and emotional turbulence into one of the label's most textured statements in recent years. It's a brand new release, and one that's already become a staple in Ben UFO sets i for good reason. 'Fena' opens with a rush of spliced rhythms and serrated synth work, capturing the title's namesake i a mischievous, unpredictable spirit i in full force. 'Sickomode' flickers between murky euphoria and brittle dissonance, a confident slow-burner that feels constantly on the edge of collapse. 'Saat' is the most striking: a retelling of a rave myth via mangled leads, barking textures and a breakdown that stretches into something close to revelation. Finally, 'Cawuso' offers a soft landing i warm, skeletal and full of quiet reverence. Everything here moves with intention but never telegraphs its next step. It's club music with personality: strange, expressive and fully alive. One of the most distinctive additions to the Hessle catalogue in a minute.

Make It Better
Cat: HES 047. Rel: 27 Feb 25

Bassline
Make It Better (5:23)
Restless Sleep (4:59)
Review: Josi Devil's debut on Hessle Audio is a natural step forward for the label, expanding its sound in a way that still feels unmistakably its ownithis release adding a layer of tension and subtlety to an already diverse catalog. Hailing from Bristol, Josi has built a reputation with labels like Innamind and Nervous Horizon, known for his raw, unrelenting style. But here, he takes a step into slightly murkier waters, layering euphoric vocal snippets with deeper, atmospheric textures that give the track an interesting push and pull. 'Make It Better' kicks off with swung breakbeats that quickly dissolve into a blend of chopped vocals and rumbling sub-bass, offering moments of pure euphoria while maintaining an underlying tension. There's a certain balance here, as the energy ping-pongs between light and dark, but it never feels out of sync. Josi manages to hold onto a grounded, gritty feel, all while pulling in atmospheric elements that make the track feel spacious and immersive. On the flip, things get darker with 'Restless Sleep' where muffled drums and deep, growling basslines add a sense of foreboding as shadowy Buchla tones weave through. The UKG-inspired samples mix with the heavy low-end, creating a sense of unease without ever feeling too overbearing. It's a track that knows when to hold back and when to let the tension fully break looseishowing off Josi's knack for creating complex, layered sounds that still pack a visceral punch. This release feels rooted in the underground but offers something fresh for the forward-thinking listener, leaving a lingering impression long after the first listen.

Changing Channels: Part 2
Cat: HESLP 005PT2. Rel: 05 Oct 23

Minimal/Tech House
Installation (4:55)
Squid (4:29)
If (5:40)
Bad Lines (3:54)
Review: It's been a long time since we heard from Pangaea, one of the three famous faces who made up the original Leeds label come ubiquitous DJ's DJ's DJ imprint - Hessle Audio. Though perhaps less appreciated than his contemporaries Ben UFO and Pearson Sound, now's his time to shine again: Changing Channels is his second ever album, following up 2016's In Drum Play (which for all its quality, rough, juddering techno experiments, will always line the shelves of many a budding selector). Like its predecessor, oddball bassy techno is here Pangaea's preferred mode, whether reflected in the sassy femme vocal cutups of 'Installation' or the spitting basses of 'Squid'. This is one of two vinyl 12"s over which the album is spread; an effort to enhance its playability for DJs.

Minimal/Tech House
The Slip (4:52)
Hole Away (4:55)
Changing Channels (7:19)
Review: Pangaea's latest album Changing Channels comes a notable seven years after his debut, In Drum Play, and again hears the Hessle brain lay down a whopping demo in dance histrionics. Made in a period of oscillation - between international DJ sets and holidays of downtime and r&r - we get the impression of a remarkably clear-headed album, with the production crisp, and the choice and placement of samples neat. On this 12", we hear the LP's first part, with the no-fuss garagey 'Hole Away' and the stabby 'Changing Channels' piquing particular interest.
