Soul Strut! (mono)
Cat: FNR 095. Rel: 02 Jul 18
Soul Strut (2:43)
Electrifying Woman (3:54)
Review: Two of Funk Night Records' most distinctive and innovative acts join forces for two outstanding pieces of psychedelic fiery funk fusion. Estonian duo Misha Panfilov Sound Combo set the bedrock on "Soul Strut". All fuzzy, unkempt and energetic, it sets the scene for Detroit's Coco Buttafli to lay her scorched heart on the line in an almost metal-like style. "Electrifying Woman" takes us even deeper into the psychedelic mindset as the groove is given a swampy, dizzying feeling while Coco spits spoken word with such a savage honesty you can't helped but get sucked into the story. Two of a kind.

Express Yourself (mono)
Cat: FNR 055. Rel: 16 Jun 15
Express Yourself (3:13)
Sweetheart (4:17)
Review: In case you didn't know, The M Tet consists of Joe Baer Magnant on guitar, Gary Pitman on the organ, Chris Lujan on bass, and Michael Reed on drums. Together they've been putting out soulful neo-funk, and they're back with their third release, this time for Detroit's Funk Night outlet. "Express Yourself" is a jazzy, instrumental cover of the pop song which goes by the same name, while "Sweetheart" is deeper, moodier and more head-nodding. A tight lil' 7" this one!

Vamp Oakland

Vamp Oakland (2:54)
Ray Ban (3:21)
Review: San Fran instrumental soul and funk quartet The M Tet consist of guitarist Joe Baer Magnant, Hammond organ player Gary Pitman, drummer Michael Reed and Chris Lujan on Fender bass. Their brand of organ-based RnB with loving nods to the likes of The Meters and Booker T & The M.G.'s has surfaced on a small clutch of 45s for US funk labels these past few years and there is more to check on The M Tet bandcamp! After debuting on Funk Night with a killer instrumental funk rendition of "Express Yourself" last year, The M Tet are back on Frank Raines' label with another dinked display of goodness for the mind, body and soul. Up top "Vamp Oakland" is a delightful funk strut that sees Pitman's Hammond playing tee off against the tight drums of Reed. Down below it's the supple funk bassline from Lujan that really gets into your hips on "Ray Ban".

Honey Stung (3:01)
Orozco's Guarantee (3:36)
Review: Joe Baer Magnant and The Ready bring that sweet sweet soul sound to Funk Night for a tasty 7" packed with good time grooves and a lil dose of the blues. Magnant is an accomplished guitarist who's been striking out on his own more recently, and his chops are in full effect on the heavy-grooving "Honey Stung". There are serious amounts of funk in those drums, and some punch in the brass section, but really this one belongs to Magnant's expressive playing. He's equally compelling on the B-side, which houses more downbeat cut "Orozco's Guarantee".

You Got It Right/Solar Blast
Cat: FNR 071. Rel: 25 Oct 16
You Got It Right (2:35)
Solar Blast (3:02)
Review: Misha Panfilov is a man of many talents. Not only is the Estonian producer an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, but he's also something of a sonic magpie. To date, his fuzzy musical output has included revivalist jazz-funk, space-age analogue electronica, and bossanova inspired easy listening. His core sound, though, remains funk, which he mostly explores on the Misha Panfilov Sound Combo releases. "You Got It Right" is typically psychedelic, with Panfilov peppering a low-slung groove with all manner of musical solos and Eastern-influenced chants. The hallucinatory dancefloor fun continues on the flip, where the constantly rising "Solar Blast" - all dusty analogue synths, wavy flute solos and killer funk breaks - cuts an impressively tipsy figure.

Follow The Clouds (2:50)
Way Higher (3:30)
Review: Last year, we were rather impressed by the debut album from Estonian producer Misha Paniflov's Sound Combo crew. Happily, we can also confirm that the similarly trippy and psychedelic "Follow The Clouds" is every bit as essential. The title track is a loose, funk-break-driven chunk of instrumental funk that doffs an over-sized cap towards late '60s psychedelia, dream pop and dewy-eyed easy listening. Turn to the flip for another hip-hop tempo outing, the more low-slung, gritty and fuzzy "Where Higher", where a walking bassline, razor-sharp rock guitars and wild psychedelic synths dominate the sound space.

Who's In Love (2:08)
Review: Multi-instrumentalist Misha Paniflov reignites his "Sound Combo" (a collaborative project with flautist friend Ilja Gussarov) for the fourth time in 2018. As per usual, the Estonian duo offer up two on point cuts on one desirable seven-inch single. A-side "Marathon" is particularly good: a bustling, lo-fi Afro-funk gem rich in Tony Allen style drums, fluorescent flute flourishes, trippy electronics and rasping horns that's as heavy and intoxicating as they come. There's a jaunty dancefloor jazz-meets-'60s dream pop feel to flipside "Who's In Love", which sounds a little like something the Beatles and Harry Nilsson would come up with after heading down to a jazz club while tripping on acid.

Few Layers For Smith (4:02)
Review: Musical polymath Misha Paniflov is Estonia's answer to Bruno 'Patchworks' Hovart - a hugely talented multi-instrumentalist and producer whose steady stream of solo and collaborative releases are never less than superb. Here he reassembles his 'Sound Combo' quartet for two workouts that blur the boundaries between jazz, jazz-funk and cinematic soul. A-side 'Moonscape Waltz' is rather lovely, with alternately sparkling and fuzzy guitar solos and twinkling electric piano sounds gently surfing a swelling waltz rhythm. It comes backed with a suitably jaunty and sun-kissed B-side, 'Few Layers For Smith', where restless electric piano motifs, jazzy drums and organ chords are joined by glorious saxophone flourishes on a slow build towards a gorgeous climax.

Caveman (3:04)
Review: Having recently taken a sweaty funk shot at a certain world leader, prolific Tallinn funk troupe return to the most cosmic sound they really coined on their "Space Jogging" release last year... Loose strings, tight drums, big mystical waves of energy and atmosphere and a latent smokiness and fuzz that fizzes off their instruments and tape machines. Those hungry for a spiritual saviour will be satisfied by "In The Woods" while those in need of a naked sleazy strut should oil themselves up to "Caveman".

Review: Estonian producer Misha Paniflov's Sound Combo crew have been impressive ever since their debut. Their second album, 2020's Days As Echoes, was another brilliantly psyched-out. modal and space age fusion of easy listening, jazz and soul that gets your head amongst the clouds. Bird calls, warming summer breezes and gorgeous wind instruments all make this a lush, mellifluous listening experience that soars to grand heights with life affirming positivity and feel good optimism to spare. A true modern classic.
