Check It Out People (reissue)
Cat: SSR 218. Rel: 18 Jan 21
  1. Beastie Boys Vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:08)
Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

  1. Beastie Boys vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:11)
Review: On his last two singles on Soopastole, mash-up maestro DJ Soopasoul smashed together elements of Stevie Wonder and Redman/Method Man, and James Brown and Crooklyn Dodgers. For his latest trick he's decided to pepper an edited version of "People All Over The World" by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB, with raps from a stone cold classic Beastie Boys tune. It's the sort of thing that shouldn't work, but the Beasties' flows work perfectly over the flanged guitars, undulating bass and unfussy 4-to-the-floor Philly Soul grooves of the MFSB track. You can hear his instrumental rework of that track on the flip; it's so good that it's arguably worth the entrance price on its own.

Eric B Is President (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: TIC 006. Rel: 02 Sep 19
  1. Eric B & Rakim - "Eric B Is President" (3:50)
  2. Mountain - "Long Red" (3:46)
Review: Since launching last year, Lil Static has offered up new, lightly altered editions of classic tracks from Jeru the Damaja, Kraftwerk, Run-DMC, Nas and the Notorious B.I.G. Here they continue to serve up vital beats for break-digging DJs via classic cuts from Eric B. & Rakim and Mountain. The A side sports an edited version of 1986 cut "Eric B. Is President", a synth-bass propelled NYC hip-hop gem rich in unmistakable rap vocals and tight scratching. Over on side B there's a chance to savour Mountain's late '60s rock cut that provided the Eric B. & Rakim track (and so many others since) with its distinctive drum break, "Long Red". This edited version gives more prominence to the breaks, making it an ideal mixing tool for hip-hop DJs.

Review: On their second album together, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib got even more complex and deep than on their debut. The celebrated producer and street rapper duo found plenty of fascinating new ground between their disparate styles and the album gave rise to a number of standout tunes. "Half Manne Half Cocaine" is one of them and is served up here next to an instrumental as well as brief bonus tracks "Zebras Into The Mist" and "Night Vision." "Palmolive" features a heart aching vocal cry as well as Pusha T and Killer Mike on the flip with an instrumental.

  1. Call On Me (Knxwledge remix) (2:33)
  2. Call On Me (4:05)
Review: "Call on Me" is the standout single from cult Japanese beat maker mabanua's 2018 album Blurred. It's an impossibly innocent and naive sounding track thanks to Chara's angelic vocal delivery and the gentle, carefree guitar licks beneath, but it gets totally flipped by Knxwledge. The in demand, LA-based Stones Throw artist reworks it into a slow motion beat with hazy chords and a superbly funky bassline. In his hands, Chara's vocal becomes somehow romantic, adding to the track's alluringly lovestruck vibe.

Review: Mr Bongo continue to shine a light on classic hip-hop with their excellent curated reissue series. They have two Main Source 45s in their sights and this is the second. When it first came out on Actual Records, it soon sold out and became a much sought after piece with copies going for high prices on the second hand market. And for good reason - the band really hinted at the greatness they would go on to achieve with an impeccable three minute rap single making a massive mark. 'Think' is a superb example of how to take well known samples and flip them into something fresh.

Review: Mr Bongo come through once more with a first UK issue of this slice of hip-hop history. It is the lead single from Main Source's Breaking Atoms album and is one of two such 45s the Brighton label, shop and archivists are putting out. Undisputed rap classic 'Looking At The Front Door' goes first and ride son nice loose drums with oft sampled bass and off course some fine MC work. On the flip is another gem, 'Let Roger Do His Thing', which is darker, more hard hitting and with some DJ scratching for extra streetwise sagger.

  1. Looking At The Front Door (vocal) (4:14)
  2. Looking At The Front Door (instrumental) (4:11)
Review: To our ears, there are few greater golden era dancefloor hip-hop workouts than Main Source's "Looking At The Front Door", a stone-cold classic that remains a much-played anthem decades after it was originally released. Here the 1990 jam gets the reissue treatment. It's available in both vocal and instrumental versions, with both sides doing a great job in showcasing the duo's killer beat - a fine mixture of crunchy drums, woozy electric piano chords, scratched-in samples and toasty bass. Naturally it's the vocal version that we'd reach for more often than not - the trio's flows are particularly good on 'Looking At The Front Door' - but the instrumental is nevertheless a useful tool to have at your disposal.

Cat: AL 2571. Rel: 28 Mar 20
  1. Watch Roger Do His Thing (4:15)
  2. Watch Roger Do His Thing (instrumental) (4:16)
Review: Canadian/American hip-hop crew Main Source released some sublime music during rap's "golden era", with both of their albums remaining stone cold classics. "Watch Roger Do His Thing" was never quite as successful commercially as its predecessor, "Looking At The Front Door", but is nevertheless a quality bit of conscious rap. For the uninitiated, the 1990 cut is based around loose, slack-tuned drums, weighty bass, jazzy organ flourishes and bass so fat it probably has its own postcode. This edition pairs the superb vocal version with the under-celebrated instrumental, both of which appeared on the song's original single release.

But before that, the pair actually self-released their debut on Actual Records, and it went on to become a hard to find, much in demand 12". The greatness that was to come was hinted at on the music with superbly concise raps and tight production that made for two faultless singles. 'Think' takes plenty of well known samples but makes them sound fresh and 'Atom' does the same, with humour, bragging and positivity all colouring the bars.

Review: To mark 20 years since Atlanta's answer to De La Soul, Mass Influence, released their double A-side classic 'Analyze/All Out', All Right Fresh has decided to reissue it on a striking, double purple vinyl. Plate one boasts the superb original mix of 'Analyze', a jaunty, piano-heavy slab of boom-bap goodness featuring thoughtful raps from the Atlanta trio and scratches by Mr Len, and the deeper, slower and jazzier late-night flex of 'All Out'. The second disc boasts fresh vocal and instrumental takes on the latter track by The Roots' Stro Elliot. Utilising fresh instrumentation - including some sunny acoustic guitar - and his own head-nodding, toe-tapping beats, Elliot successfully re-frames the track whilst retaining many of its' most alluring elements.

Review: The latest must-check missive in CB Records' "Change The Beat" series, which was inspired by the legendary San Francisco party of the same name, comes courtesy of label regular Mophono and collaborators Tenshun and The Heavy Twelves. The former lends a hand on A-side "Goons", a formidably fuzzy and lo-fi fusion of chaotic, loose-limbed drums, throbbing bass and intergalactic noises. The Heavy Twelves replace Tenshun in the studio on flipside "Spy vs Spy". Operating at a lower tempo with dirtier bass, grime style stabs and dub noises aplenty, it's arguably even stronger than the A-side.

Review: Japanese heavyweights HHV continue their ongoing trawl through the back catalogue of long-serving hip-hop producer, DJ, record collector and self-styled King of Diggin', Muro. Here they present the second part of the dusty-fingered hero's turn-of-the-millennium Pan Rhythm series of 12" singles, this time presenting it on a tidy seven inch single. 'Hip-Hop Band' is a weighty, floor friendly, horn-heavy re-make of the Stetsasonic song of the same name, with local mic man Boo delivering tweaked versions of the U.S crew's verses in his native Japanese. While jazzy, the bombastic backing track - which can be heard in full on the flipside instrumental version - is forthright and club-ready, making the single a must-have for working hip-hop DJs and those who love the more up-tempo end of the rap spectrum.

Review: It was way back in 1998 when Japan's undisputed King of Diggin', DJ.producer/mix-maker and dedicated record collector Muro, first released 'Han-Tome'. These days, it's regarded as a Japanese hip-hop classic, and listening back to this reissue it's easy to see why: the beats are dope, the producer's jazz and orchestral samples beautifully incorporated into the backing track, and the combination of Japanese rap verses and R&B style sung choruses every bit as good as those you'd expect on big-name American tracks from the same period. As it did first time around, the track comes backed by the superb 'Flutestrumental Mix'. This adds sun-kissed keyboard stabs and flighty flute solos to Muro's formidably head-nodding beats..

It comes ahead of a new series of singles he has cooked up and opens with 'Late Night Lobo,' Pixelated pads wash over the groove while Murs does his well-articulated thing up top. 'Psychedelic Steve' (feat Coy Dog) is a deeper jam that has a more reflective mood. What's more, this record is in memory of two dogs that belonged to friends of Murs, so a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the ASPCA.

A fan favourite packed with guests like Aceyalone, AWOL One, Busdriver, and Gel Roc, and production by Canada's heavyweight Factor Chandelier, it's a slept on classic. This new, super limited 7" is an exclusive collab between the pair and is the sound for the climate of the world right now. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip hop classic "How High" atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from Clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie party-starting floor-heater "Superstitioun". It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the Hip Hop vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonderful jam.

They've been at it again recently and have a full length on the way, but before that is this new 7" slice of gold with another long-time affiliate in the Street Life crew. The A side is a pudding, deep cut beat with crashing hits and some of those spooky yet soulful keys that have long defined this style of rap. An instrumental on the flip seals the deal and makes this an essential pick up.

Review: The Street Knowledge "45 series" appears to have been set up to educate heads on original 1990s hip-hop jams, or at the very least deliver fresh pressings of some seriously classic cuts. This inaugural release begins with Warren G and Nate Dogg's 1994 heater "Regulate", a deep and seductive number that makes great use of samples from Michael McDonald's teary blue-eyed soul classic "I Keep Forgetting". Flip to the B-side and you'll find Luniz 1995 hit "I Got 5 On It", a cut that's been bitten, reworked and re-made umpteen times in the 24 years that have passed since it was first released. As this reissue proves, the Oakland duo's original version is still streets ahead of the rest.

Review: Five years after their collaborative debut, Madlib and Freddie Gibbs reconvene for a follow up that goes even deeper. Madlib is of course a celebrated producer who has worked with some of the best in the game, and Gibbs is a raw street rapper, so it is the differences as much as the similarities between the two that make this such a compelling listen. At times complex and challenging, at others effortless and charming, it's an album stuffed with a myriad of different sounds, styles and references that is hard to categorise but easy to admire.

Review: Freddie Gibbs and Madlib's hard hitting sophomore album Bandana has proven a real hit over the last five months. Now though, many fans get what they have been waiting for; an instrumental version that pairs things back to the essential beats. It makes for a record that covers plenty of grind - from sunny day and feel good instrumentals to much rawer, harder hitting beast that arm with attitude even without the explicit vocal deliveries. Plenty of the soulful samples remain in situ to help colour things and make this such a characterful record.
