Hangin' On To You
2025 bestseller!
Cat: FVR 198. Rel: 24 Mar 25
Jonathan Jr - "Hangin' On To You" (5:34)
Special Occasion - "Flyin' To Santa Barbara" (6:37)
Review: Over the years, France's Favorite Recordings has been very good at sniffing out lesser-known European gems from the disco and boogie era, mostly for superb and must-check compilations. Recently, they decided to make some of these licensed obscurities available on a series of 12" singles, where a louder, club-heavy cut is preferable to DJs. The latest sees them offer-up two lesser-known Belgian gems produced in the mid 1980s by future new beat don Tony Baron. Jonathan Jr's 'Hanging On To You' is warm, shuffling and synth heavy, with the artist's soulful and jazzy lead vocal sitting alongside squelchy synth-bass, Nile Rodgers style guitars and post-electro beats. Special Occasion's 'Flying To Santa Barbara', meanwhile, sits somewhere between 80s soul, AOR synth-pop and sax-sporting B-movie soundtrack goodness.

Voodoo Ray
2025 bestseller!
Cat: FVR 197. Rel: 29 Jan 25
Voodoo Ray (main mix) (3:22)
Voodoo Ray (radio edit) (2:58)
Interplanetary Bounce (main mix) (3:17)
Interplanetary Bounce (radio edit) (3:16)
Review: Bjorn Wagner's all-star tropical disco band, Magic Source, loves a cover version. The outfit's first EP boasted, as a bonus cut, a superb (and colourful) take on Tom Tom Club's 'Genius of Love'. On this belated sequel, they've gone one better by re-inventing A Guy Called Gerald's pioneering UK house classic 'Voodoo Ray' as a driving, all-live tropical disco jam. It's cleverly done, with all the key elements being replicated, sometimes in canny ways (the acid lines now become Clavinet lines, the synth-bass is now bass guitar, and so on). It's a fantastic cover all told and one that is far more than a smile-inducing novelty. Also superb is flip-side 'Interplanetary Bounce', a spacey jazz-funk/disco fusion cut rich in fuzzy horns, vintage synth sounds and shuffling drums.

Riviera Drive
Cat: FVR 180. Rel: 28 Feb 22
Riviera Drive (extended 12" version) (7:17)
Genius Of Love (3:34)
Riviera Drive (radio edit) (7:17)
Review: Bars on the French Riviera, beaches in Cannes, hot sunny weather, mesmerising deep-blue seas and lovely leafy palm trees all come to mind once you drouth need on this latest 12" slice heat from Favourite France. Magic Source do a great job of musical transportation here particularly with 'Genius of Love' which is a riff on the Tam Tam girls classic. The tropical island beats and funky bass riffs all douse you in good vibes while a lead flute takes your mind up, up and away into a cloudless sky. 'Riviera Drive' is slight more dance effort ready with its rump-wiggling trumpets, exotic synths and Balearic disco vibes.

Cyber Versus NGE
BLA (long version)
Review: Franck Biyong is a Cameroonese musician, composer and singer. As leader of the band Massak and creator of the 'Afrolectric' sound (a fusion of afrobeat, electro-funk and avant-garde Jazz), he has recorded, toured and performed constantly ever since 1997 to bring his musical vision to western audiences. Here Biyong gives us a timeless song that has both political, spiritual, and musical messages coming through every nook and cranny of "BLA". Huge horn section, a female choir, heavy drums, and the voice of France's most talented and charismatic singer. Frank Biyong takes you on a musical journey that leaves you aching for more.

We've Only Just Begun

We've Only Just Begun (Grant Phabao One Drop rework)
We've Only Just Begun (Patchworks remix)
We've Only Just Begun (Patchworks instrumental remix)
Review: Hot tune alert! Lee McDonald is back with two brand new remixes of the hot hit "We've only just begun". Grant Phabao comes with a wicked lilting soulful reggae remix. Lots of heavy keyboard over percussions, and tight horn blasts punctuating the whole groove! Take this to your next sound system jam and pretend you're the king selector! On the flip, Patchworks, the man behind many contemporary funk bombs, has done a stunning remixing job to give a dancefloor approach. It has nice keyboard touches that really send this tune to the stars without losing any of the soul of the original! The result is pure magic.

Le Premier Disco Sans Toi
Cat: FVR 138. Rel: 17 Jan 18
Le Premier Disco Sans Toi (7:20)
Le Premier Disco Sans Toi (dub version) (4:45)
Moonbeach Disco (dub version) (5:40)
Review: The Le Premier Disco Sans Toi EP by Andre Solomko unveils two new compositions with disco flavours. Solomko is backed again by a team of great musicians and vocalists, such as Mr Day and Lili Wagner on the title track, or Charlotta Kerbs on "Moonbeach Disco". And even if it is not the first by him, this disco journey fits perfectly with his jazz-funk style - plus a sense of melody. The EP really shows another facet of his many talents. Born in Ukraine in 1965, Andre Solomko is said to be 'a rich and engaging personality', but above all: a brilliant saxophonist, composer and engineer. After beginning a meteoric career in USSR, fate led him to Finland, where he started the label Vinyl Jam. This new single also results from a long and solid partnership, led by a shared and deep passion for analogue music and vintage grooves. His contagious passion cannot leave anyone indifferent. Moreover, a new album is also planned for 2018.

Feel So Good Inside (extended Waxist edit mix) (6:51)
Feel So Good Inside (4:19)
Take Me To (New York City) (4:18)
Review: The result of a diligent digging quest since he heard DJ Klas drop it many years ago, Lyonaisse editor Waxist has finally track down his own copy of Lamar's 1980 disco soul love gem and given it some serious treatment. Extending the unfettered positivity of the original by almost two minutes (with special attention paid to that immense organ solo), it lives up to its name in every possible way. For authenticity's sake he's also included the original B-side "Take Me To New York". Still standing the test of time impeccably after 35 years, one tickle from the lolloping bassline and swooning keys and your dancefloor will be hooked.

Trouble Travel (feat Nai-Jah - Garage version) (5:45)
Too Young To Die (feat Olivya) (5:24)
Trop Jeune Pour Ca (5:50)
Review: A warm welcome back to Bruno Hovart's Voilaaa project, traditionally a revivalist Afro-disco vehicle best known for 2015 dancefloor smash 'Spies Are Watching Me'. 'Fache', featuring Pat Kalla, explores similar sonic territory, with punchy Afrobeat horns, woozy chords and crunchy clavinet licks rising above a low-slung, hypnotic, dub disco-meets-Afro-boogie groove. It comes accompanied by a fine, effects-laden instrumental dub and a trio of similarly tasty bonus cuts: the warming, early garage-house and deep house influenced 'Trouble Travel' (featuring Jai-Nah), the languid, soulful and Latin-influenced 'Too Young To Die (featuring Olivia)' and the Afro-speckled disco-goes-jazz-funk loveliness of 'Trop Jeune Pour Sa'.

Spies Are Watching Me (7:15)
Le Disco Des Capitales (6:45)
Review: Sounds like it came out of Lagos in 1971, actually written and recorded in Lyon in 2015: Voilaaa is the brainchild of Bruno Hovart whose long relationship with Favorite goes way back to his days as Patchworks, Mr President and The Dynamics. Recording on a whole host of vintage machines and calling upon local African singers both cuts have a real authentic sense of realness; "Spies Are Watching Me" drives with big horns and swooning strings which isn't dissimilar to the work of The Movers, while the TY Boys-esque "Le Disco Des Capitales" is a heavier, more concentrated slab of floor-minded disco where the groove takes more of a forefront role. Apparently there's a whole album of this cooking... We can't wait to hear it.
