Review: Wax Digits hits release number five with a tight and tidy two-tracker from the late veteran Robert Ouimet who passed a couple of years ago. Before then he cooked up these gems with his pal and production partner Dave Godin. They are being released as a tribute to the memory of Ouimet and a fine one they are too. 'Plenty' has a raw groove and big chords with jangling guitars adding hints of melancholy that counter the big stabs. Soulful vocals are a great finishing touch then 'Funky Together' is more loose and strident with big horns leading the way under psyched-out chords. Two quality party starters.

All instrumental, it marks a shift from prior album An Insatiable High (1977), which brought a relatively aerobic seven-track feel; Brazilian Skies is the trans-Indian holiday after the marathon, bringing lilting beachside hums and coconut claves to a multi-instrumental funk bonanza.

Review: A specialist of short, exquisite instrumental funk records, Masayoshi Takanaka laid this sweet, yearning, yachtbound record down in 1979, following the previous year's Latin sojourn, Brasilian Skies. This slice of jollity sacrifices much of Takanaka's regional focus, and instead brings seven rather more generally awesome, mostly instru-prog-funk tunes to the fore (even though 'Radio Rio' still alludes to Brazil's home city, where Takanaka spent much time honing the samba and bossa nova influences that informed his craft, as well as performing). Lead tune 'Blue Lagoon' is noted for catapulting Takanaka's career after it was taken up by Pioneer for a TV ad; ambient heads would likely contest this history, arguing that the later ambient cut 'Sango-sho No Yousei' is the star tune, and the one that should've won him the limelight.

Review: Part of a dedicated reissues campaign of much of Japanese funk and prog instrumentalist Masayoshi Takanaka's discography, we're now privy to one of the best records within it: the esteemed, sensitively embellished, and patently instrumental super-opus, All Of Me. The only compilation record to be reissued as part of the series, All Of Me was first put out in the same period as the early treats Brasilian Skies and Jolly Jive, which sealed the deal on Takanaka's (successful) career, and saw to the unstoppably decades-long period of fun that followed, and more or less lasted until 2011. Intro'd superbly, and with a sense of amicable drama, we hear segues into 'Sweet Agnes' and 'Izu Amanatsu Natto Uri'; both are gateway drugs for atmospheric music enjoyers to get into funk, amping up the mood of ease, and building on Takanaka's self-fashioned surf scene adjacency.

Review: The bright idea of British producer Tom Carauna, this mashed-up Wu-Tang/Fab Four was first released in 2011, and followed a legacy of infamous acapella reshakes of rap works by the named East Coast hip-hop collective. Retreading the bread-crumbed trails of producers Cecil Otter and Swiss Andy's 13 Chambers, which did the same for the punk band Fugazi, a profusion of rock-rap shred-spits followed, most of which kept Wu-Tang in tow whilst varying the rock greats providing the instrumental versions. Carauna returned to source with 'CREAM', a special selection from the original LP now culled by Tea Breaks; the tune combines elements of the already rather Tangy beat with the core piano riff from 'Let It Be', proving an incendiary combo.

Review: In 1979, the Washington-based Janice Lakers Quintet recorded this fetching demo, beloved for its formal attending to the joy of making music together. With Lakers on vocals, Dick Cady on piano, Mike Edwards on woodwinds, Larry Turner on bass and Fred Taylor on drums, the group delivered two unique covers, each worked into their own signature style. Their take on Seawind's 'He Loves You' strips back the funk, replacing it with a light, effortless glide. Taylor's whisking drums and Turner's steady bassline lay an airy foundation, while Edwards' clarinet and Cady's piano inject bursts of energy mid-song. On the flip, 'Shaker Song' bridges Spyro Gyra's instrumental and Manhattan Transfer's later vocal version; richer in texture, it offered Lakers a chance to explore her vocal range, closing with lively scatting.

Originally written as the soundtrack for a rejected blaxploitation film, it instead became one of Brown's most defining statements, a double LP of hypnotic grooves, militant funk and raw emotion. Overall, his 37th album and one of his most memorable. The title track alone is a masterclass in simmering tension. With its deep bassline, wah-wah guitars and Brown's electrifying growl, it's both menacing and danceable, a battle cry disguised as a slow-burning funk jam. Review: When it comes to new funk, it doesn't get much raunchier or weird than this. Packed with rhythmic rodomontade, DJ Koco Shimokit and Southpaw Chop - both from Japan - bring an adroit right and sinister left hand respectively to the art of vinyl flipping and sampling, staying true to the rule of primary sourcing: "always sample straight from the original wax." Though it's a moot point as to whether sample mileage should be legitimated as a concept in the same sense as food mileage is, we can see and hear the appeal, as this loopy chef-d'œuvre hears its samples chopped and braised to the crispest degree, sating even the most dulled of tastebuds, and letting no indelicacy past the noise gates. Side B offers a special treat for heads too: the demo version of the pair's debut single, 'Funky Soul Brother'.

This one was inspired by a night spent dancing at a club in Osaka during their 2005 Japan tour and arms with a smooth groove. Review: Taeko Ohnuki's second album Sunshower first broke in July 1977, hastening the evolution of city pop even before it developed the name. With the mythic Ryuichi Sakamoto enlisted for musical direction, the record married J-pop, smooth jazz, and rock, as 'Summer Connection', 'Tokai', and 'Kusuri Wo Takusan' fleshed out and diffracted Ohnuki's introspective lyrics and melodic sensuality. Despite only modest initial commercial success, Sunshower garnered critical acclaim over time for its sophisticated arrangements, standing out and tall among a thick canopy of similarly flighty-slick city pop records, most of which lack that extra Sakamoto *something*.

Review: By 1973, Soul Media, formed in Tokyo by saxophonist Jiro Inagaki, had spent a good many years blurring the lines of jazz and rock, of course in what we Westerners would interpret as distinctive “J import” style. With In the Groove, their studio output took a decisive leap, injecting a tighter funk sensibility into an already well oiled jazz membrane. Refusing to mimic the overseas jazz-funk scene, Inagaki and his band offered their own take: confident, dynamic and layered with a distinctly Japanese stance on groove and arrangement. The Crusaders’ influence looms large, where Inagaki was closely following their evolution. But this isn’t aphonic pastiche; the record finds its own voice in its interplays of brass and rhythm, with ‘That’s How I Feel’ causing a slow trickle then downpour of funktastic piano-funk flections to come, such as ‘Joie De Vivre’, ‘Papa Hooper’s Barrel House Groove’ and the brilliantly corvine ‘Raven Speaks’.
