AMDS
RDIO
Review: Perro Bueno Edits has been behind some much-sought-after edit releases in recent times and this one is another of the same. The fifth entry in the cult series again looks to unearth rare Afro disco gems and rework them with precision and soul. On Side A, 'AMDS' is a hypnotic cut with a rolling bassline that radiates warmth as the original is respectfully reimagined with sharp edits and an extended arrangement built for movement. The B-side is a spiritual stunner that melds heartfelt vocals with layered rhythms and dreamy keys to back the soulful vocal. It's a dubbed-out groove perfect for late nights with some bright horns adding extra vitality.

Review: On this album, the artist explores the notion of self-improvement, placing emphasis on being better for oneself. The tracks blend electronic beats with live instruments, creating a sound that moves effortlessly between genres. The album takes listeners on a reflective journey, exploring themes of struggle, growth and ultimately resilience. Tracks like 'Never A Coincidence,' featuring Diastrata, offer introspective moments, while 'Feel Yourself,' with Marc Rebillet, brings a more playful and spontaneous energy. Collaborations with artists like Late Night Radio further expand the album's range, ensuring there's something for every listener, from contemplative ballads to upbeat grooves.

The collection takes listeners through the band's rise to fame, highlighting their timeless funk and soul hits, while also reflecting on the unseen burdens faced by Black artists in America. In Alto Mare
Review: Loredana Berte's unmistakable voice meets the glittering finesse of French touch as Dimitri From Paris spreads her 1980 hit 'In Alto Mare' across a hot griddle of club-ready disco. The track launches a new remix series celebrating Berte's legacy through the lens of contemporary producers and DJs: Dimitri, known for his stylish refits of Jamiroquai, Chic and Dua Lipa, now leans into a comparatively classic funk groove, elevating it with a cinematic glide and streamlinear post-prod polish. Long a staple of his DJ sets and broadcasts in bootleg form, this official release feels fated. "It's melodic, disco-flavoured, cinematic, and emotionally powerful - all the things I love," he says, as it manifests as the first of seven reworks dropping over the course of May 2025.

Review: Calibro 35 recalibrate with Exploration, a fresh dive into cinematic jazz-funk marking their first full-length LP on the independent since 2023's Nouvelle Aventures, continuing the path set by last year's 'Jazzploitation' EP. Yarning vintage soundtrack stylings with contemporary groove, the Milan group balance reverent covers - like Roy Ayers' 'Coffy' and Bob James' 'Nautilus' with bold, golden originals. Lead tune 'Reptile Strut', not to mention 'The Twang' and 'Pied De Poule', twine round taut rhythms, lush horn lines, and evocative cinematic textures. The band tips its hat to touchstones like Herbie Hancock, Lalo Schifrin, and Italian great Piero Umiliani, whose 'Discomania' appears on the accompanying limited clear blue 7" single, backed with 'Jazz Carnival'.

Review: Brian Ellis, known for his multi-instrumental work as part of Birdbone Unlimited on Star Creature, steps out with a solo release that channels West Coast flair into a bold reinterpretation of early 80s dancefloor energy. Revisiting Bobby O's production 'Love Is The Drug' for Roni Griffith's 1982 hit, Ellis transforms the original into a shimmering blend of Italectro and funk-driven electrobass, a proto-freestyle fandango filtered through Ellis' signature analog sensibility. A high-gloss, synth-laced homage results on orange gamboge vinyl; a replenishing source of sunny sonic vitamin D.

Review: The cultured creative minds of James Simonson and Blair French reunite for this new Realities Remix EP on MotorCity Wine which was, in original form, recorded by Simonson in hotel rooms across Europe and the Americas while touring with soul legend Bettye LaVette. As such it takes in myriad global influences as well as evocative field recordings which get reworked in style. Blair French adds his touch with three remixes, firstly the anthemic 'Realities (Projector Remix),' then the more dance-driven 'Elektronolux Overture (Sunday Remix)' and the lush and downtempo 'Hannah (Remix)' featuring violinist Sonia Lee. Two originals 'Realities' and 'Elektronolux Overture' also appear on vinyl for the first time and sound superb.

Mind Power
Review: The ultimate revenge anthemian album that stalks, struts and demands its due with the kind of swagger that few records have ever matched. Originally written as the soundtrack for a rejected blaxploitation film, it instead became one of Brown's most defining statements, a double LP of hypnotic grooves, militant funk and raw emotion. Overall, his 37th album and one of his most memorable. The title track alone is a masterclass in simmering tension. With its deep bassline, wah-wah guitars and Brown's electrifying growl, it's both menacing and danceable, a battle cry disguised as a slow-burning funk jam. Tracks like 'Mind Power' and 'Shoot Your Shot' extend the formulailong, relentless jams where Brown's commands to his band shape the music in real time, making it feel alive and dangerous. The JB's, Brown's legendary backing band, provide razor-sharp horns, intricate percussion and rolling basslines that lock into hypnotic loops. 'Time Is Running Out Fast' and 'Take Some... Leave Some' groove with an effortless cool, while 'Stone to the Bone' oozes confidence. More than just a funk record, this reissue of The Payback is a declaration of defiance and self-assurance, showing James Brown as the undisputed Godfather of Soul and still had plenty to give.

Review: There's more to US funk god Rick James than just 'Super Freak' and this sprawling retrospective proves it. Across four sides, the Buffalo-born musician's full-spectrum funk is on glorious display i from the righteous bounce of 'You & I' and weed-soaked romance of 'Mary Jane', to the hard-grinding grooves of 'Ghetto Life' and 'Give It To Me Baby'. The hits are all here, but so are deeper cuts like 'She Blew My Mind (69 Times)', 'Cold Blooded' and 'Can't Stop', showing off James's twisted humour, whip-smart arrangements and genre-bending instincts. Highlights like 'Glow', 'Dance Wit Me - Part 1' and the Temptations-featuring 'Standing On The Top' cement his reputation as a psychedelic soul innovator who consistently defied convention. Even the closing Busta Rhymes flip of 'In The Ghetto' feels earned i a nod to his lasting influence on rap and r&b. This isn't just a greatest hits i it's a flex, a time capsule and a reminder that Rick James could outplay, outsing and outfreak almost anyone.

Review: Ma Ze Music welcomes back the quality pairing of UV & Nenor for a new selection of original cuts that were recorded between the Middle East and Scandinavia. Between them they have plenty of styles in their arsenal and here combine them with bold analogue synths, percussion with a tribal twist and some special guest collaborations. 'Arayot' is a real bass odyssey with spaced-out melodies and marimbas alongside Ophir "Kutiman" Kutiel's drums. 'Tanim' brings some moody and psychedelic voodoo funk with hard-hitting drums, edgy clavinets and a magnificent synth lead by Romano, while the icing on the cake is a superb flute solo by Shlomi Alon. Emotional tension and groove come together perfectly here on what might be UV & Nenor's best yet.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine (instrumental)
Review: Few recordings capture the easy intensity of a summer afternoon like 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine'. Released in 1976 and wrapped in slow-drifting synths and soft falsettos, the track became a touchstone not just for Roy Ayers, but for 70s soul and beyond. Born in Los Angeles, Ayers helped define the jazz-funk crossover, placing the vibraphone at the centre of a sound both hazy and sharply detailed. The original vocal take on the A-side still melts under its own warmth; the instrumental on the flip uncovers the careful architecture beneath. Issued here on 7" black wax following Ayers' recent passing, this reissue feels like both a keepsake and a quiet honouring of an artist who shaped a whole way of listening.

Music Makes Me High (extended version)
Review: The turn of 1980 saw limited quantities of Salty Miller's lone album, a hidden gem of the beach music scene of the Carolinas, after which the properly named Beach Music Records names itself (they monopolised the scene early on). Miller's album blends soul, disco, and mid-tempo steppers, perfect accompaniments for the shag, beach music's signature dance. Though an 80s classic in its own right, Album 1 was made after Miller took extended time away from releasing: his masterwork heard a noble North Carolinian cast, including members of fellow The Embers, then join him on backing duties. Oceanic soundscapes and emotive string arrangements contrast with a local joviality; 'One More Time', 'Music Makes Me High', and 'The Fox' are standouts, though the peak sensation 'Happy Is The Word' has to be our highlight, bringing boardwalk-strutter soul and pitchy electric organs to a well chorused mix.

Review: This orange 7" is a miniature monument to one of soul's most quietly influential figures. Roy AyersiLos Angeles-born, jazz-schooled, funk-mindedicrafted 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' not to dazzle but to dissolve. It moves with a drowsy clarity: shimmering synth, near-whispered vocals, and a lazily tumbling bassline that never quite lands. Released during a golden run of Ayers' mid-70s material, the track has since become shorthand for warm-weather introspection, equal parts ease and ache. The instrumental version on the reverse keeps the spirit intact, offering a meditative glide through the same terrain. Limited to 300 copies, this orange pressing pairs a low-lit groove with a deepening sense of legacyiAyers' influence isn't just heard, it's felt in the space he leaves behind.

Kifu Mitsuhashi - "Tanchame"
Review: This vinyl-only survey refracts Okinawan folk traditions through vivid jazz-funk and big band arrangements, creating a prismatic, highly listenable archive of Japan's southern soul. Kiyoshi Yamaya's influence runs deep, his arrangements glowing with cinematic elegance on 'Ryukyu Miyabi 2' through to the festival-like drive of 'Ryukyu No Matsuri 1'. The percussive triptych 'Nishinjo-bushi/Asadoya Yunta/Tanchame' shifts with deft energy, while his solo pieces like 'Ryukyu No Sora' feel airier, almost impressionistic. Tadaaki Misago & Tokyo Cuban Boys stir big band verve into 'Tanchame-bushi' and 'Hatoma-bushi', while Minoru Murayama's 'Asadoya Yunta' leans more contemplative. Kifu Mitsuhashi's takes on 'Tanchame' and 'Asadoya Yunta' feel grounded in breath and space, balancing the brassier moments with shakuhachi-led intimacy. The sequencing cleverly blurs the line between groove-heavy reimagination and respectful homage, shaping a dialogue that's rhythmic, emotive and alive. A treasure trove for collectors of Wamono, Asian jazz and crossover rarities and a striking monument to the genreless fluidity of folk, when placed in the right hands.

The Hollowbody EP delivers two new reworks of a little-known American jazz-funk treasure. Review: Germany's funk collective expand their sound on this release, recorded live at the MPS studio in the Black Forest. The raw, break-heavy foundation remains, but the album ventures into jazz, soul, and psychedelia, capturing an organic energy that feels both spontaneous and precise. Tracks like 'Open The Gate' blend punchy brass with intricate rhythms, while 'Spinning' layers folk-psych guitar and cinematic horns, creating a fluid dialogue between the musicians. 'Back And Better' highlights Nichola Richards' soulful vocals, adding depth to the sparse beats. The album also explores playful experimentation, with 'Sparks of Joy' embracing a swampy groove, and 'Phantom Power' introducing an electric phin, nodding to world jazz influences. Carlton Jumel Smith's performance on 'Can't Stop This Fire' and the gospel-tinged 'Homebound' anchor the album, grounding its expansive journey. The result is a cohesive and evolving soundione that truly captures the clearly audible joy of collaboration.

Review: This latest collection from Yugoslavia's Jugoton label provides a revealing snapshot of the country's diverse and often overlooked musical legacy. With remastered tracks drawn from the label’s extensive vaults, it offers a fascinating blend of rare grooves, soul, and jazz, alongside the quirky folk-disco fusion that emerged in the wake of Tito’s death. From the funky, breakbeat-driven 'Zlatokosa' to the smooth jazz textures of Boško Petrovic's 'Trogir by Day', the compilation captures a musical landscape both nostalgic and ahead of its time. Artists like Novi Fosili and Josipa Lisac contribute to a sound that is distinctly Eastern Bloc, yet remarkably universal in its appeal. The selection not only highlights the richness of Yugoslavian music in the late ’70s and early ’80s but also reflects the cultural shifts of the era. It’s an evocative listen, brimming with the kind of unexpected pleasures that continue to excite collectors and newcomers alike.

Review: This 1998 album compiles unreleased sessions from the late 70s featuring Weldon Irvine, Don Blackman and a young Marcus Miller. Known for his rare groove classics like Spirit Man in 1975 and Sinbad in 1976, Irvin's work shines here and highlights come thick and fast. They include the soulful 'Morning Sunrise' which was famously sampled by Jay-Z and Drake, the jazzy funk of 'The Sisters' with Miller's bass and Tom Brown's trumpet and the smooth 'Heard It All Before' which mixes urban sophistication with mellow fusion. Toni Smith's dynamic vocals on the funky 'Think I'll Stay A While' is another doozy which makes this masterpiece rich with jazz, soul and funk goodness.

Review: By 1973, Soul Media, formed in Tokyo by saxophonist Jiro Inagaki, had spent a good many years blurring the lines of jazz and rock, of course in what we Westerners would interpret as distinctive “J import” style. With In the Groove, their studio output took a decisive leap, injecting a tighter funk sensibility into an already well oiled jazz membrane. Refusing to mimic the overseas jazz-funk scene, Inagaki and his band offered their own take: confident, dynamic and layered with a distinctly Japanese stance on groove and arrangement. The Crusaders’ influence looms large, where Inagaki was closely following their evolution. But this isn’t aphonic pastiche; the record finds its own voice in its interplays of brass and rhythm, with ‘That’s How I Feel’ causing a slow trickle then downpour of funktastic piano-funk flections to come, such as ‘Joie De Vivre’, ‘Papa Hooper’s Barrel House Groove’ and the brilliantly corvine ‘Raven Speaks’.

Below The Funk (Pass The J)
Review: A funk masterpiece that redefined r&b and pop, this album blended gritty street themes with polished, danceable grooves and left a big mark on music when it dropped in 1981. James was already well known, but this LP catapulted him to superstardom, solidifying his signature "punk-funk" style and leaving an indelible mark on pop music. Kicking off with the incendiary 'Give It to Me Baby', James delivers an irresistible mix of slap bass, soaring horns and electrifying energy. The track became a club staple, setting the stage for the album's raw yet refined sound. The iconic 'Super Freak' is a funky, synth-driven anthem that remains one of the most recognisable basslines in music history, later sampled by MC Hammer for 'U Can't Touch This'. Beyond the hits, Street Songs is full of depth. 'Ghetto Life' paints a vivid picture of James' upbringing with a groove-heavy backdrop, while 'Fire and Desire', a stunning duet with Teena Marie, slows things down with its emotional intensity and soulful vocal interplay. 'Call Me Up' and 'Below the Funk (Pass the J)' further feature James' ability to fuse funk with rock and r&b seamlessly. The album's influence on pop music is immeasurable. It bridged funk and mainstream pop, inspiring artists from Prince to Bruno Mars. Its unapologetic energy and genre-blurring sound helped shape the future of r&b, hip-hop and dance music, proving that funk could be both raw and radio-friendly. Over four decades later, Street Songs still stands as a defining statement of funk's evolution into the pop landscape.

Review: Originally released in 1987, this album featured Level 42 at their commercial and creative peak, blending pop, funk and jazz with impeccable musicianship and slick production. Now reissued on striking red vinyl, this album, their seventh at the time, remains an important piece to the band's signature sound and their ability to craft infectious, sophisticated pop. At the heart of the album are its massive singles. 'Lessons in Love' is a timeless pop-funk anthem, driven by Mark King's signature slap bass and soaring melodies. The title track, 'Running In The Family', combines a polished groove with reflective, autobiographical lyrics, while 'Children Say' has become a cult favorite for its smooth, atmospheric quality. On the softer side, 'It's Over' is a beautifully crafted ballad. The album's production is sleek and radio-ready, yet it never sacrifices the band's instrumental virtuosity. From the intricate basslines to the jazz-infused keyboard work, Running In The Family strikes a perfect balance between complexity and accessibility. This reissue not only highlights Level 42's most successful era but also serves as a reminder of their unique ability to fuse technical skill with mainstream appeal and nearly 40 years on it sounds as fresh as ever.

Review: Since the early 2000s, Wagram Music - a French indie label known for a diversity of releases from across the "cool" spectrum of hip-hop, jazz, soul and funk - has conceived many an ingenious studio compilation. This specialism granted them their toehold in the music industry, and would later also confer them their powers in the domains of publishing and "distro". For now, though, we're firmly camped in with the comps, as their breakout feature, Funk Masters, returns for another round. Long charting the backstreet talents of the likes of Odyssey, Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic, and Anita Ward - among a longer list too great to mention in its entirety - this is an unstoppable series. This time we're in ever more wondrous company, as the Masters contrast to 2022's Vintage Sounds, with further brill selections from Bobby Byrd, T-Connection and Isaac Hayes.

Review: Exaggerated disco ecstasies from Domenico Niki and his Echoes From Disco label, which accepts its mission to recall the lost gems of disco, boogie, and jazz by way of thoughtful re-edits. This latest one is a glamorous slab of Day-Glo disco gaud. 'Let's Get It On' opens with splendid flair, with twang guitars, talkbox tremolos and disco girl backing singer ad-libs, before 'Don't Give Up' follows with a deep-fried P-funk prance replete with transitory glissando. 'Makin' Love' and 'Get On Down' hear the EP wind down the pace, the latter track ending on an obscure edit of Suzy & Chas' Belgian 1978 rouser, 'Man I Dig Music'.

Review: P-Vine Japan does great work once more here by bringing back into print some hugely sought-after sounds from the blues and r&b world. The first release in their new series revives Larry Davis' 1969 Kent Records single, which was originally written by Sherwood Fleming. The A-side, 'For 5 Long Years' delivers a gritty mid-tempo funk-blues groove while the B-side, 'I've Been Hurt So Many Times' (a classic subject for a blues tune) channels Willie Cobbs' signature sound. These will be familiar to anyone who has danced at a Northern Soul event and cannot be slept on.

Review: Funk and soul album don't come much better than this. Chocolate Milk’s Action Speaks Louder Than Words is a 1975 classic and an essential piece of New Orleans music history. Discovered and produced by the legendary Allen Toussaint, the band’s debut blends tight grooves, sharp horn lines and socially conscious lyrics with the rich musical heritage of their hometown. The standout title track is a rare groove classic still sampled and revered decades later. With polished arrangements and undeniable rhythm, this album firmly established Chocolate Milk as a force in '70s funk and remains a superb boogie-infused release that is as vital and infectious today as ever.

Review: Saint Paul has long since proven himself as a fine curator of dusty beats across the deeper house and disco spectrum. He is part of the Moonrise Hill Material crew and now lands on Saint Wax with his first outing of the year. 'The Chosen One' brims with joy from the shimmering chords and vocal chops while bumpy drums get you moving. 'Pour L'Amour Du G-Funk (69 La Trik)' is a funky jam with smeared pads and excitable synths then 'Bay Disco Orkestra' brings a percussive twist and retro disco vibe. The trio of flip-side cuts explored slower, more soulful deep house and jazzy grooves that overflow with musicality, while a Gledd remix brings a lovely Latin skip and shuffle to 'Don't Hold Back Da Groove'.

Review: The Ray Contreras Band, fixtures of the 80s New York dance scene, first released 'You Make It Harder' as a 7" under the name Contreras / Sokolov / Milgrom. A rare, twilight boogie-funk track specially cherished among nostalgists, the record again avails itself this time in the form of a 12" single, expanded over four formerly unreleased songs. A supremely satisfying, deep-plombing mix takes the cake on the A1 as Elliot Sokolov's impassioned vocals recount the experience of romantic frustration through sharp, between-the-lines intakes of breath. 'Wishful Thinking', 'If You Want My Love', 'I Can Feel Your Heartbeat', and 'Miami Girl' follow as the criminally unreleased demos, all of which are as hit-worthy as the A, we kid you not. New York electro-funk at its finest, whiffing with tasteful cheese.

Review: Taeko Ohnuki's second album Sunshower first broke in July 1977, hastening the evolution of city pop even before it developed the name. With the mythic Ryuichi Sakamoto enlisted for musical direction, the record married J-pop, smooth jazz, and rock, as 'Summer Connection', 'Tokai', and 'Kusuri Wo Takusan' fleshed out and diffracted Ohnuki's introspective lyrics and melodic sensuality. Despite only modest initial commercial success, Sunshower garnered critical acclaim over time for its sophisticated arrangements, standing out and tall among a thick canopy of similarly flighty-slick city pop records, most of which lack that extra Sakamoto *something*.

Recorded in Spain over 2024, the new LP shares a bed with its predecessor, Receiver (2009, as Gerard Love lends his voice to a new render of Popp's plush 2004 tune, 'Save'; Love previously appeared on the Under Covers compilation with a Frank Popp cover and returns here with striking effect. Also featured is Nicke Andersson - veteran of Entombed, Hellacopters, and The Solution - bringing a punky energy to 'Caught in a Web', a Northern Soul burner with an unmistakable Magic Touch swing. New York outfit The Budos Band return with their first full-length release on Diamond West, the new label founded by band members Tom Brenneck and Jared Tankel. VII was produced by Brenneck and engineered by Simon Guzmán and has plenty of their signature taut, groove-driven tracks that blend Afro-soul, doom rock and '70s psychedelia. They were all recorded in California and feature the percussionist Rich Tarrana, who adds his own fresh texture without detracting from the raw, hypnotic MO of the band. As usual, this is music that is equal parts cinematic and visceral and is perfect for nocturnal drives and deep immersion. Now more than two decades in, The Budos Band are still able to surprise and compel.

Come Inn
Asi Si
Review: The Saint Wax Edit Service series delivers another superb sonic sermon here with Haverdi at the metaphorical lectern. To get things under way, they lay down the impossible funky basslines of 'Chituna' which is powered by big brass and thudding kicks which only heighten the soul. 'Bamboo' is defined by dazzling disco synth stabs with a funky vocal and endlessly wiggling bsasline that cannot fail to get those hips moving. On the flip, 'Come Inn' brings some Afro vocals and low slung drum sleaze and last of all 'Asi Si' brings some Latin flair, organic percussion and marvellous trumpet work to really set the 'floor ablaze.
