Review: Little context is needed. Actress' latest EP, 'Tranzkript 1', continues Darren Cunningham's exploration of abstract and electronic forms, expanding on the pared-back sound scoured on recent full-lengths (such as Karma & Desire and LXXXVIII) for a rare EP. Elusive, and driven by both generative elements and finely scalped parts, 'Tranzkript 1' may or may not consist in the many part-AI-conducted sounds that Actress has deployed of late. 'Baby U Lar' and 'Guardians' are like phonetic muddlings and nephilic trods across desert landscapes respectively; they are twinned only in texture and not tempo, uniting only at the intersecting white-noise-glue-space that so characterises Actress' sound. 'We Walk Together' and 'Kjj_' span dub chordata and twinging dubieties meanwhile, wrenching the utmost emotions out of the barest recording instruments.

Review: Survival horror franchise Alan Wake saw its second instalment in 2023, following the game series' 2010 debut. Again, we follow novelist Alan Wake, as he attempts to escape his imprisonment in an alternate dimension by penning a horror story about an FBI agent, Saga Anderson. Both a detective story and a shoot 'em up, the second game bolsters the franchise's neo-noir and gothic Midwestern tropes; the soundtrack is fittingly both lachrymose and chilling, with its contributing scorers - Petri Alanko, Old Gods Of Asgard, Jean Castel and more - portraying Nordic moods of modern, nailbiting mystery. Through stark, grim, minor-keyed anthems, trip-hop furrowers and trembly orchestral laments, we find dead bodies found in the woods, fight spriggan-esque creatures, and soak in moods of noir crime psychodrama, all chillingly captured in a single sonic melange.

Review: Gothenburg trio Amateur Hour is Hugo Randulv, Julia Bjernelind and Dan Johansson, and Gar I Kras is their fourth album. It builds on the expansive Krokta Tankar Och Branda Vanor from back in 2022, and though still experimental and out there, it might also be their most accessible and polished work yet. Dreamy lo-fi pop meets gritty electronics and sound collage throughout as damaged linger above humming basslines and grimy guitars underpin detached vocals. It's a haunting but beautiful soundtrack for outsiders who like music from the fringe but that retains a sense of human warmth and soul.

Review: Hailing from Atlanta, Andre 3000 continues to redefine the contours of musical experimentation with his latest sonic offerings. On 'Moving Day', a piece first showcased in last year's short film documenting his recent work, the OutKast veteran trades in his usual genre-defying flow for the smooth, ambient tones of a cosmic flute. The track unfolds like a slow-motion dream, where the melodies drift in and out of focus, capturing the disorienting yet soothing experience of moving through transitions. Then comes the reversed version, 'Day Moving', which inverts the gentle flow of the original, adding an unsettling, almost ghostly quality as the music warps and loops. The third track, 'Tunnels of Egypt', brings in an unexpectedly grounded yet still vast atmosphere, with its deep, resonant percussion and sparse instrumentation evoking a journey through both time and space. Meanwhile, Canadian artist Davachi's 'Basse Brevis' is a minimalist exploration of timbre, space and duration. Review: You know we're all in trouble if Daniel Brandt starts making albums about the Doomsday Clock - now closer than ever to midnight, and Armageddon - and whether or not the Earth will survive us. More than just a record, not only does this reflect the darkest of the Brandt Brauer Frick legend's oeuvre, thematically and in moments aurally, it also represents the latest in his long list of defining work and groundbreaking projects from the artist. The LP is one aspect, an apocalyptic live rave show another, where fans and masochists alike can indulge in a multimedia presentation of end times. Sticking to the sounds, though, Brandt again shows himself to be a true electronic maestro here, from the earthy wooded percussive loops of 'Resistance', to the droning string funnels on 'Addicted', 'Steady''s rolling post-club depth, and the opening alarm call future tech-step of 'Paradise OD'. So, if it does all come down to this, at least we're bowing out on a sonic high.

The duo, Christian Schoppik and Katie Rich, crafts immersive soundscapes where traditional instruments, eerie vocals, and looped, crackling recordings converge. Tracks like 'Das Jungfrauliche Ohr' and 'Die Milchlinse' set the tone, blending atonal elements with haunting, dreamlike atmospheres. 'Die Geschandete Venus' takes a darker, more melancholic turn, with its slow, creeping build. On the B-side, tracks such as 'Der Kleinere Mit Gefleckten Linien Umgebene Papillonsflugel' offer intricate compositions that evoke a surreal, almost cinematic quality. With influences from Nico and Novy Svet, their music pours out and creates a world that's both unsettling and strangely beautiful.

Review: Brock Van Wey is bvdub, a towering ambient figure and venerated veteran who continues to find newness in his work. He's back on Past Inside The Present here with 13 (on vinyl for the first time) which, he says, "represent one edict or idea from chapter 13 of the Tao Te Ching" which are about putting focus on humility and freedom from desire as a way to lead a peaceful life. Flickering melodies and slowly shifting harmonies set the tone from the off with track two introducing pulsing keys and low-end distortion. Elsewhere, layers of propulsive patterns and dubby motifsweave together with soft distortion and tracks ten and 11 build to great intensity and the finale brings delicate strings. Review: The cult-classic debut album from Florida-raised singer-songwriter and producer Hayden Silas Anhedonia, who goes by the stage name Ethel Cain. The album draws on her personal experiences, including growing up homeschooled in a Southern Baptist family. She channels that it into tender, balladic indie pop that's connected with millions. Anhedonia is reportedly no longer religious and so her lyrics are more of an exploration of those themes and hold an irreverence. In heartbreaking ethereal tones, reminiscent of Lana Del Rey, she sings: "God loves you / but not enough to save you", on 'American Teenager'. The album took four years for Anhedonia to make and she claims to have made nearly every inch of it herself. This painstaking attention to detail shows in the mixes, which feel like pop but are subtly avant-garde and make you feel in the company of a true artist.

Review: Who doesn't like a freebie? Nice move from the Daughter of Cain label here (an imprint of Prescription Songs) they offer a free poster with this limited run of Ethel Cain's debut album. With Cain, real name Hayden Anhedonia, having kicked off 2025 with the release of her second album; her debut, which paved the way for a massive cult following that's her into a mainstream alt-pop figure, is earning renewed attention. Sonically, this is befitting to the Sad Girl Summer movement which became a craze on social media. Think Mitski, Lana Del Rey, Phoebe Bridgers, but with more of an alternative and shoegaze undercurrent. Lyrically, Anhedonia delves into her past, growing up in a staunchly religious family - and her most iconic line of any song on the album has to go to 'American Teenager': "God loves you/but not enough to save you".

There are plenty of microscopic details that drift by, shimmering sun rays that piece the surface and implied rhythms that sway to and fro like the shifting sands of the ocean floor. It's a real soother for the soul but a great bit of nourishment for the mind.

It's a soothing journey for the soul, offering both relaxation and nourishment for the mind, and is a tranquil, yet thought-provoking place to get lost. Very nice indeed.

A quirky and unobvious stylistic throughline, it nonetheless fits the record's making across several continents, with principal sonography in France and completion in rural Ontario, Canada. Eleven compositions composite strings, brass, woodwind, keys, and modular synthesis, exploring grief, dislocation, and boundless freedom. The swirling zephyrs and dissonant portamentos of 'Daze' exemplify the process, evoking a sense of exhilarating, weightless flight. "Anything can have a voice," in Coverdale's own words.

Review: As we hapless reviewers make our way through these five new experimental LPs by Current 93, we cannot help but feel increasing torment and terror at the figures portrayed on the front covers of each record: hand-painted by David Tibet himself (the artist has increasingly indulged such formal solo trend-buckings through his own Cashen's Gap imprint in recent years) they appear like sleep paralytic demons or the ghosts of cancelled English folk yore. All the records are apparently ritually connected to a recent string of live appearances between London and Hastings, and Tibet's penchant for demonologic peerage titles such as GreenSleeve Drakon and Gnostic Sketch - blurring a sense of self-referentiality and occult otherworldliness - leave us bewildered and slack-jawed.

As Real As ScareCrows is a haunting new chapter in Tibet's arcane vision, and it was released alongside four other LPs to mark recent Channellings in London and Hastings. Ritualistic and esoteric, the album feels like a spectral transmission or "ScareCrow scaring crows away after Menstrual Night," as Tibet describes it. It's a deeply unsettling and bleakly poetic work that is unmistakably C93 in its mood and mystique. Each copy includes a signed risograph print of Tibet's painting, making it as much an art object as a musical release. A beautifully eerie offering from one of Britain's most enduring and enigmatic cult acts.

Review: Moony Tunes is one of five new 12" LPs recently unveiled by David Tibet aka. Current 93, mad witch doctor of the post-80s industrial continuum. An ever-morphing project, Current 93 always implies motifs of apocalyptic folk, dream logic, and esoteric revelations, and this volume, subtitled Preparing To Sleep In Menstrual Night, feels like a whispered dispatch from the edge of sleep and symbol. True to C93's nature, it resists easy description, lullabying eerily through hoveringly attentive drones and spellcasting vocals. Each pressing includes a riso print of Tibet's painting Moony Toons, hand-signed in pencil, thus hand-stamping an album best received as a kind of ritual, and shaped by the occult aurae of Tibet's performances in London and Hastings earlier this year.

Review: After a period of roughly three decades, German soundtrack artist and onetime Karlheinz Stockhausen apprentice Holger Czukay shares a surprise trove of lost tapes, which are said to have been once recorded by the artist for "free disposal" and which were presumably forgotten about at the time. Review: Although he initially broke through decades ago as a talented keyboardist- a role he still performs alongside his work as a solo producer - Mark de Clive-Lowe has always been much more than a prodigious musician-for-hire. That was particularly evident on 2021's Hotel San Claudio album, a musical meeting of minds with Shigeto and Melanie Charles. It shines through loud and clear on Past Present (Tone Poems Through Time)', an inspired collection of 'tone poems' - musical pieces that draw direct inspiration from the landscape - created using an electric piano, an enormous list of mostly vintage synthesisers, and field recordings captured on a trip to his father's native Japan. Sitting somewhere between ambient jazz, the epic synth-scapes of Tangerine Dream and the most vivid movie soundtracks, Past Present is emotive, immersive and effortlessly evocative.
