Review: Shackleton and Waclaw Zimpel's first album Primal Forms was a masterful collaboration which arrived on Cosmo Rhythmatic in 2020. The pair clearly found fruit in their crossover as they return for a second instalment, this time on 7K! and with an expanded approach thanks to the addition of Siddhartha Belmannu, a strikingly talented young singer in the field of Indian classical music. The over-arching intention of the artists was to make a joyous album about the wonder of life and living, but of course this isn't a one-dimensional happy-clappy record. Rather, it's a meditative exercise dealing in fascinating microtonality and mesmerising harmonic interplay with the power to have a profound, uncanny effect on the listener.

Review: Kakashi is the latest in a long line of largely forgotten Yasuaki Shimizu albums and side projects to be given the reissue treatment. The album was originally released in Japan by Better Days back in 1981, and saw the jazz man-turned-ambient explorer join the dots between melodious, post-punk era jazz-fusion, new age influenced downtempo grooves, dub, ambient and eccentric, hard-to-pigeonhole experimentation. While musically diverse, the album hangs together beautifully. This is primarily down to two key factors: the ubiquity of Shimizu's evocative saxophone, flute and clarinet playing, and the richness of the multi-instrumentalist's superb production.

Review: Japanese harpist Ayako Shinozaki's 1974 release 'Music Now For Harp' is a rarity, a sprawling journey through strings, percussion and electrochord that culminates in a 25-minute ambient piece 'Heterodyne (Or Surfing)'. It's magical and gripping, and is finally being released outside of Japan for the first time - a remastering and reissue in collaboration between Nippon Columbia and French label Wewantsounds. The sounds are otherworldly and entrancing, 'Stanza II' is evocative of a horror-themed Kabuki display, the strings deftly floating around a poignant aura of droning tension. Featuring the original artwork from Kohei Sugiura, this new package comes adorned with an obi belt and a booklet with liner notes from Alan Cummings.

As an LP, it's very much of its time, with the pair brilliantly blurring the boundaries between spacey ambient, dub, chill out room-ready downtempo grooves, intergalactic-sounding drum & bass, flute-sporting soundscapes and the kind of bustling rhythms and shroom-fuelled electronics that were once the preserve of new age travellers in brightly coloured trousers and slightly damp woolly hats.

Review: Polish composer Aleksandra Slyz is back with a second album, a first on Warm Winters, that sees her "finding connections between acoustic and synthetic sounds, creating rich drone structures, slowly but intensely pulsing and resonating within the surrounding space and within each listener." The physicality of the instruments used in the record also defines its sound, from the way fingers press down on bows to the air pressure of each sax note. Review: After being commissioned to produce several 'interlocking' ambient pieces for an art gallery piece in LA, Brian Foote and Sage Caswell decided to take the concept of 'audience crossfading' to the next level, creating an entire ambient album using a particular sonic technique. Over five long pieces from 'Waterwheel' to 'Smiley', their aim was to evoke the feeling of bodies moving in thoroughfares. Review: The first release on SOS Gunver Ryberg's own imprint, Arterial Recordings, is a great example of how wrong assumptions and presumptions can be when based on labels. And no, we don't mean record labels. Ryberg is an award-winning sound artist, but what do we mean when we say things like that? Is it the dense theoretical and conceptual sonics designed solely as installations within the institutions of art itself, or something more tangibly recognisable as 'music' itself? Maybe it's neither. It can definitely be both. Spine proves that last point wonderfully. Yes, this is electronic music at the bleeding edge, strange aural worlds crafted from noises and gadgets that could be the controls of a space craft from the future for all the average person might know. But the tracks here are definite and deliberately designed to be heard as tracks, whether that's the serene, floating-past-the-cosmos ambience of 'Sensuous Sky', or the frantic breakbeat tension of the title track.

Review: Photographer Nan Goldin captured snapshots of inner-city queer sexuality like no other. Famous for her visual chronicling of LGBT subcultures in New York throughout the 1970s and 80s, her work focused on escapism within the real - walking the tightrope of sexual ecstasy over beds of real danger: the twin epidemics, HIV/AIDS and opioid. Film material about her work up until now has largely been limited to the slideshow 'The Ballad Of Sexual Dependency', but 2023 changed that with the documentary film 'All The Beauty And The Bloodshed', which biographically documents Goldin's life and career, homing especially in on her lengthy fight with the orchestrators of the opioid epidemic, the Sackler family. The soundtrack to the film, composed by international experimental sound art group Soundwalk Collective, in collaboration with Dawn Sutter Madell - is an intense, almost heavenly orchestral suite, yet is no less cinematic or righteous. It's tinged with the mood of tearing down an oppressive, parasitic pharmaceutical structure, not least one which still financially feeds the arts world with bloodstained hands.

It makes for an expansive, emotive sonic tale that draws on deep research and fieldwork to make for a sublime intersection of sound, environment and spirituality that is utterly profound.

Review: Space Drum Meditation is back with a reissue of Four Tusks, a 12-track odyssey of dreaded sonics and trepidatious treks through augmented wildernesses. Their debut album and seventh reissue on the eponymous label, the duo of Eddie Ness and Liem were once fixtures of the house musical landscape at large, yet only with SDM did they turn their hands to demurer experimental soundscapes, informed by the "tribal" gloom and etherics of an electro-auxed rainforest. Throughout Four Tusks, we hear the sleeker, pantherine side of their catalogue, with ritualistic drumming heard well-melded into many a grim, cowled and rattling texture, all glued by the faint but here still oppressive sound of rain, not to mention vapour steaming off the megaphylls.

Review: Originally from Rome, Italy, Marco Antonio - the man behind the mask, or the MaSpaventi moniker - relocated to Amsterdam in 2007. A switch from one historic and stunning city to another, in doing so he landed himself smack bang in one of the most vibrant and pro-active electronic music communities and industries on the planet. Review: Warp continues to comb back through the landmark Artificial Intelligence series with this landmark record from Jochem Paap, aka Speedy J. Alongside a tandem reissue of Richie Hawtin's F.U.S.E. album Dimension Intrusion, this remastered edition of Ginger takes us back into the heart of early 90s techno innovation, when new ideas were developing globally at a rate of knots. Paap had already established himself in the harder end of the techno pool, but Ginger flipped the script with an immersive, meditative exploration of minimalism and melodic structure. Amongst the eternal classics are some dazzling miniatures deemed 'Fills' which make for some of the most compelling listening on this seminal slice of early 90s techno.

Review: Since it first appeared in 1980, computer music pioneer Laurie Spiegel's debut album, "The Expanding Universe", has become something of a cult classic; an acclaimed, avant-garde masterpiece loved by ambient heads, experimental electronic freaks and neo-classical enthusiasts alike. Listening to this expanded reissue, which also includes 15 other rare or previously unreleased Spiegel tracks recorded around the same time, it's easy to see why. Sitting midway between the synthesizer works of Terry Riley, a computerized take on "Berlin School" ambient and electronica records produced years later, the music is becalmed, inspired, mesmerizing and otherworldly in equal measure. The title track, a near 30-minute epic of slowly shifting ambient electronics, is particularly memorable.

Review: Florian TM Zeisig's latest project has been created with perfumer Angel Paradise so blends scent and sound into a multi-sensory experience rooted in the Bavarian Alps. While living in the rural village of Hinang, Paradise studied alpine plants to craft natural perfumes while Zeisig composed Spool, a reflective suite inspired by nostalgia, landscape and the duo's impending departure. Combining field recordings, ambient loops and blurred instrumental vignettes, the music has a wonderfully dreamlike, pastoral atmosphere that has your head lost somewhere beautiful. Review: Andrew Bunsell and Tom Rellen comprise Staran Wake, the rapturous electronic music project traversing icy wonderworlds and capturing convincing musical analog-ies of them. Seven years of making music together preceded this sublime opus, after which a further four years were poured into its polishing off. Sublime aweworlds like opener 'The Watcher' use uncanny sounds and samples, as if evoking the image of moving across great plains of snow on horseback. Review: The vinyl edition of the erst CD album The Love It Took Took Leave You by Colin Stetson is now upon us. The esteemed saxophonist and multi-reedist marks his first full-length solo recording since 2017 here, delivering an album drawn on the experience of love lost, and yet zest for life regained. Written some years before its release - yet always lurking in the background, waiting for recognition apropos the right moment - The Love It Took To Leave You was recorded over the course of a week in early 2023 at The Darling Foundry, a 144-year-old former metalworks facility in Montreal, now transformed into a contemporary art complex, with a voluminous main room that still maintains its raw architecture of brick, concrete and steel. With an arsenal of saxes and clarinets, Stetson builds a heartbroken yet integral tapestry of emotions, his saxophonic welt-geist riffing upon whirling, looping maelstroms of breath, chamber reverb and unerring focus.

Stetson's droning brass and avant-garde compositions may add layers of mercurial dread to filmmaker Ari Aster's bleak visuals but when isolated, the pieces take on entirely new life of caustic, crawling atmospherics which swell to nauseating degrees before spiralling into frenzies of twisted modern classical imbued jazz, complete with bursts of warped brass and psychotic strings coalescing into truly hellish soundscapes.

Review: Paul Dickow has made some memorable and mesmerising music since emerging as Strategy 21 years ago, initially switching between much-admired experimental and underground labels (Kranky, Idle Hands, 100% Silk, Further Records) before establishing his own imprint (Community Library). Wet Room, his 20th full-length, is another fine collection of cuts in his distinctively deep, dubby and trippy sonic style. It's rooted in ambient, sound collage and experimentalism, but also touches on digi-dub, deep dub techno, trip-hop and the far-sighted, intergalactic electronics (if not the rhythms) of Motor City techno. Most of all, though, it feels like a coherent, immersive sonic journey, making Wet Room one of his most coherent and accessible LPs yet.

Review: Pauline Anna Strom was a revelation to followers of Rvng Intl, when the label gathered together some of the Bay Area enigma's finest moments from an obscure thread of tape releases for Trans-Millenia Music. They also helped facilitate an album of new music, Angel Tears In Sunlight, which was released in 2021 mere weeks after Strom passed away. Her legacy as a profoundly visionary ambient artist continues with this expansive box set, which gathers together her first three albums from the early 80s, remastered from the original tapes, plus a fourth previously unreleased album discovered after her passing. Glorious synthesis and a mysterious approach to composition make Strom's music so much more than her new age contemporaries and Rvng have done a fine job paying tribute to her half-hidden talent.

Review: You don't need to know that Craobh Haven was made during a one week residency at a tiny cabin in a remote Scottish village of the same name. One play through of the latest stunner to land on the ever-excellent ambient institution SWIMS and it'll feel like you were there in person. A witness to the creation of this strangely natural-feeling, highly technically-crafted, six tracker. Everything about the work by London-based musician and visual artist Loz Keystone and Glaswegian synth explore and jazz trumpeter Christos Stylianides feels in the right place. Its warm and fuzzy but vast and windswept. It's avant garde and abstract, but rounded and complete. It's incredibly inviting and slowly hypnotic. Distant samples of inaudible chatter and looped melodic refrains. Distorted walls of noise masking the patient power of aching brass. You get the point.

Review: Japanese ambient owes a great debt to Masahiro Sugaya, whose work has been re-assessed and taken on all the more importance in recent years. The now cult musician and composer released his The Long Living Things album in 1988 for the performing arts company he belonged to, Pappa Tarahumara. Though it was overlooked for many years, it is now in sharp focus and gets a deserving reissue on vinyl for the first time ever by P-Vine which he also belonged to, and has long been overlooked by all but a few enthusiastic music lovers. One track from it was Grammy-nominated and rich of the record is minimalistic, with soft interwoven sequences that keep you afloat amongst the warming pads.

Review: Sunfear is a project from Turkish multidisciplinary artist Eylul Deniz who now returns to Dark Entries with her sophomore album. Deniz has been making waves in sound since 2017 when she debuted her blend of ambient and experimental music using piano, guitar, voice and synths as tools for storytelling and self-expression. Inspired by Dante's Love That Moves the Sun and Other Stars, Pessoa's poems and Turkish poet Lale Muldur, this darker follow-up to Octopus channels some of her own personal loss and grief. Tracks like 'Above' pair sparse guitar riffs with swirling electronics, 'Bright and Wild' contrasts lush drones with jagged feedback and there are also hints of hope in the likes of 'Form Changed.' A great return.

Review: Daniel Miller and Gareth Jones head back into the studio and fire up the Eurorack modular synth for a third adventure into the great unknown of sounds and noises seemingly once heard in another dimension before being brought back to planet Earth with the hope of recreating whatever the rumbling or bleeping was. Electronic Music Improvisations Vol.3 is exactly that, building on the self-imposed musical parameters that guided the preceding two parts. Deep, otherworldly, vast, and unique, the beauty of Miller and Jones' Sunroof project is how it's also the opposite of all those words. Sparse, pared back, familiar, very much born of manmade machines, since these endeavours began we've crossed through the looking glass into a world that often feels like it's spinning out of human control, not least with the advent of music entirely made by AI. Here's proof people can still take complete charge of their creative process.

Review: A new chapter in the 'zen music for disturbed souls' series, Erik K. Skodvin adds to his legacy as alter-ego Svarte Greiner with another stunning EP that has plenty of layers to dive into, albeit on the surface seems constructed in an ultra-minimalistic way. Understanding the nuances takes a little background reading, but before that let's talk sounds - reverse out fragments of cello, electric-acoustic improvisation, sparse, dark, almost bleak and certainly a little but eerie. If that sounds intriguing enough, the process behind it should seal the deal. 'Devolving Trust' is actually a live recording, captured in the depths o the Schneider Brewery, Berlin. A setting the producer himself describes as "wet and hollow" with "long reverb", it's aural effect defines the music that's here. 'Devolve' then takes those tones and rethinks, retouches and reorganises them with similar gravitas.

Review: Manafon by David Sylvain of Japan fame is an underrated gem. The electroacoustic improvisation, complete lack of drums, coupled with Sylvain's voice right at the front of the mix, makes for an ambient, freeform and highly experimental sound. The art-pop sonics that saw him gain success in the 70s and 80s is left firmly in the past and he's doing exactly the music he wants hear - not what's expected of him commercially. Now, on vinyl for the first time, comes remixes by classical contemporary genius Dai Fujikura - he wrote the string parts - of six songs from said album. There's also new songs, heavily influenced by Fujikura and an 18-minute piece ('When We Return You Won't Recognise Us') culled from a much longer sound installation that Fukikura and Sylvain created together for the 2008-09 Biennial of Canaries in Gran Canaria. How music this sublime hasn't been on vinyl from the start is beyond us. Thankfully, that's now rectified.

Review: For their new album Lust 1, Voice Actor's Noa Kurzweil joins Welsh producer Squu for a woozy, intimate exploration of ambient sensuality. Following the sprawling Sent From My Telephone, this 45-minute work feels more focused but just as dreamlike with Kurzweil's hushed, often unintelligible vocals hovering over Squu's glowing pads and dubby pulses. With additional glitchy textures, soft hits and melancholic drones, the work forms a world that teeters between erotic hypnosis and emotional exhaustion. Highlights like 'You' and 'Nekk' blend vague ambience with jolting detail while pushing the sung-spoke-whispered words to the brink of abstraction. This is an album rich in fleeting emotions, tactile textures and forgotten memories.
