Static Effect (4:25)
Eyes Without A Face (5:44)
The Living Dead (4:47)
Review: With previous releases on Tombolo, Natural Sciences and cassette label Gin & Jazz XX, Mutant Joe is back with a new one this week on Los Angeles-based Evar Records. Since his arrival on the scene back in 2019, the Aussie producer's output has spanned diverse genres. There's four tracks featured on Wrong Way Out; he builds on earlier work with underground trap artists on opener 'Bangin On', the ketamine-laced electro of 'Static Effect' had us equally impressed as did the gnarly jungle deconstructions of 'Eyes Without A Face' and the brooding beat contortions of 'The Living Dead'.

What's On Your Mind (Late Night dub) (4:37)
Review:  Morris Mobley is an alter-ego who makes music that is designed to chill you to the bone while also blowing your mind. Words like suave, cosmopolitan, lustrous and precise all come to mind when listening to the two tracks that make up this tidy 7", the second on the US label CQQL. Opener 'What's On Your Mind' is a low slung, bumping groove with lo-fi production and an aching vocal and on the flip it gets stripped right back and made into a warm, romantic late night dub.

Review: After a bit of time away due in part to the pandemic and other geo-political factors, Dusty Donuts is now back and serving up sugar hip hop treats. This new 7" packs in five fine beats from a mix of artists, namely DJ Robert Smith, Marc Hype, Naughty NMX and Jim Sharp. This is the second in the Weapons of Choice series and it is a mix of classic 90s beats and intoxicating samples. The joints go from deep and laid back to more jazzy and sax laced. 'Scratchdeeznuts 1 & 2' is a cut-up and chopped loop for advanced DJ deployment only.

Watermelon Man (feat Bill Summers) (4:38)
Bill's Valence Street Jam (4:01)
Review: Yuki Kanesaka returns with a delicious uptempo remix-cover of Herbie Hancock's thoroughgoing jazz patent, 'Watermelon Man'. In respectful contrast to Hancock's original piece, Kanesaka deploys a to-the-letter rendition of the original's opening Hindewhu whistle hoot - also heard on the mashup B-side - and keeps up Hancock's intended 'mathematical balance' with a nonetheless meatier, dance-ready EQ balance. Legend has it that this was Hancock's first ever song to be composed with commercial success in mind; we're not surprised at its continued proliferation, appreciation and reproduction across the globe - and now in Japan, no less.

Review: Mr Bongo continue to shine a light on classic hip-hop with their excellent curated reissue series. They have two Main Source 45s in their sights and this is the second. When it first came out on Actual Records, it soon sold out and became a much sought after piece with copies going for high prices on the second hand market. And for good reason - the band really hinted at the greatness they would go on to achieve with an impeccable three minute rap single making a massive mark. 'Think' is a superb example of how to take well known samples and flip them into something fresh.

To commemorate his honour, DJ Chuck-Tee, Ryuhei's younger brother, comes through with a fresh medley - with verse features from Ryuhei's many contemporaries including Macka-Chin, Gocci and Kashi Da Handsome - making for a melancholic celebration of the DJ, digger and producer's life and legacy.

Elements Of Hip Hop (3:31)
Review: The Mushi 45 series is dedicated to bringing you the finest funky cuts on cute little 7"s, stamped up with a distinctive yellow label and guaranteed to bring the groove. On this occasion Mister Mushi himself is on the buttons, offering up some cool and deadly edits to get the party juiced up good and proper. On the A side comes a slow and sizzling version of Sister Sledge's eternal 'The Greatest Dancer', pitched down and leaning heavy on the bass for a slice of warm up magic. On the flip, savour the crisp, cool breaks of 'Elements Of Hip Hop', which is all the lean and mean funk you need to get busy in a sampler or just straight up freaky on the decks.

Review: Californian rapper-producer Mr. Green tops up his 'Ultimate Supreme Ninja Champion' series this week, with 'Supreme Ninja Training Montage' being the latest in this relentless hip-hop EP slew that loosely bases itself on bootlegged 80s ninja movies. The lead single, featuring the late rapper DMX, gets a whopping 3 different versions, while the equivalent of a small album follows. 'Illegal Laser Gun Dealer', 'Adorable Baby Dragon' and 'Stolen Tuk Tuk' effortlessly capture Green's keen sense oforf neofuturist hodgepodge, as crackly library samples, emotive wonk-bap progressions and far-Eastern movements abound.

Review: First time released on 7" vinyl, and taken from the critically-acclaimed Non Phixion album The Future Is Now. This reissue of Strange Universe includes the original LP version produced by Necro, plus two new remixes by The Czar-Keys and Marco Polo. The Strange Universe was birthed amongst the numerous blunted, Colt 45 malt liquor-fuelled sessions Non Phixion had with Doom at their Area 51 studio in Canarsie in 1998. Necro provided the beat, which everyone thought sounded like something Doom would have made. It was one of the first songs recorded for The Future Is Now.

How Superstitious (vocal mix) (4:14)
How Superstitious (instrumental mix) (4:14)
Review: Limited white vinyl repress.DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip-hop classic 'How High' atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie's party-starting floor-heater 'Superstition'. It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonder-ful jam.

Review: He may not have achieved the same acclaim and status as his fellow West Coast native Thundercat, but Mychaal Fisher AKA MMYYKK looks set to follow in his footsteps. His genre-bending music, as showcased on this brilliant Rhythm Section International debut, draws on a similar pool of influences - think Prince style purple funk, jazz, hip-hop, R&B and classic electrofunk - while also upping the soul factor to dizzyingly high levels. The results speak for themselves, with Fisher - in cahoots with a wealth of collaborators from around the world - remaining front and centre throughput thanks to his own emotive lyrics and smooth-as-butter lead vocals. In other words, it's an EP you need in your life right now.

Known for famously sampling a monologue from the hip-hop/graf documentary Style Wars in its intro, the pair exchange authentic rhymes and riffs, contemplating many ideas in the lyrics such as inner city Brooklyn life, personal philosophies, and Pan-Africanist ideas.

Luniz - "I Got 5 On It" (feat Michael Marshall) (4:17)
Review: The Street Knowledge "45 series" appears to have been set up to educate heads on original 1990s hip-hop jams, or at the very least deliver fresh pressings of some seriously classic cuts. This inaugural release begins with Warren G and Nate Dogg's 1994 heater "Regulate", a deep and seductive number that makes great use of samples from Michael McDonald's teary blue-eyed soul classic "I Keep Forgetting". Flip to the B-side and you'll find Luniz 1995 hit "I Got 5 On It", a cut that's been bitten, reworked and re-made umpteen times in the 24 years that have passed since it was first released. As this reissue proves, the Oakland duo's original version is still streets ahead of the rest.

Review: Much loved soul, jazz and hip hop fusionists Moonchild are back on their home label Try Thoughts with another magnificent and widescreen album. Reflections builds on their sonic foundation with subtle evolutions in sound but plenty of the recognisable tropes that have made this outfit so well loved as they, inspired by their own Tiny Desk performance, revisit, rework and reimagine their old songs. There are acoustic versions of their hit singles and overall the record finds the laid-back LA based trio once again epitomise a mix of intricate, progressive musicality with a chilled out vibe.

Review: Coming to PIAS' 40th Anniversary celebrations series, we hear Mark Thomas Griffin, better known as MC 900 Ft. Jesus, rerelease six tracks of his best works in the realm of bombastic hip-hop, rap, electro, cut-up, big beat and jazz. To illustrate the artist's sense of humour, Griffin's stage name came from a sermon by Oral Roberts, in which the televangelist claimed that a 900-foot-tall (270 m) Jesus Christ had come to him in a vision. Perfectly obscure cuts for any contemporary hip-hop/beats DJ, most of these tracks originate from Griffin's standout 1991 album Welcome To My Dream, a leftfield/cut-up opus in its own right.

Bitch Ass Nigga (4:06)
Review: The iconic duo of Havoc and Prodigy, better known as Mobb Deep, almost single (or doubled) handedly became the primary progenitive force in hardcore east-coast hip-hop in the early nineties. Their 1993 debut LP Juvenile Hell would, at the time, be a commercial failure eventually leading to their being dropped by their label, but the material has only grown exponentially in terms of both influence and relevance. This fresh 7" takes the album's lead single 'Peer Pressure', and switches the B-side from the original 92 pressings' LP closer 'Flavor for the Non Believes' out for the endlessly iconic banger 'Bitch Ass Nigga'. If you need your audio fidelity east-coast fix in a hurry and don't have the time to commit to a full spin of the LP, then this single has you covered.

The first side, 'G', has boss rhymes from a pair of MCs and some lush backing vocals that add the velvet, while big trumpets and deep cut beats provide the groove. Review: Gamm has become known for its edits of disco, house and jazz classics but back in the day it used to drop red hot hip hop reworks of golden era sounds. It seems they are now getting back to that with this new three party 7" inch series which is focussed on the American east coast. Lee Gomez aka Wipe The Needle has produced these beats, which are all new, but the vocals will be recognised to hip hop heads. Classic producers are referenced in the sounds here such as Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Dilla and DITC. They make for a couple of dusty and ageless joints that will turn the head of any hip hop fan.

Review: Metronomy mark their signing to Ninja Tune with a new single that comes not long after their Posse EP Volume 1, a collection of tunes all made in collaboration with up-and-coming artists like Biig Piig, Spill Tab, Sorry, Brian Nasty and Folly Group. This one is another collaboration, this time with Pam Amsterdam. 'Nice Town' deals with the lead singer's own battles such as "internal versus the external or, intangible versus the tangible." It is a delightfully snappy dance-pop ditty with great and tight synth sequences, old-school rap vocals and nice broken early electro beats. Metronomy and Alain Ogue add their own remixes to a great label debut.

Review: An Italian library gem reimagined by beatmaker Koralle and rapper Illa J. An indelible new instalment in Four Flies' Reloved series, 'New Levels / Chartreuse', comes bundled with the original instrumental from late 70s Italian ensemble Modern Sound Quartet. With the aim of the series in mind - which is to put a modern and urban spin on tunes from Italian golden age soundtracks and library music - Koralle deploys his unique jazz-funk sound to create a smooth and stylish hip-hop beat to which Illa J adds irresistible swag and coolness. More than a remix, 'New Levels' takes 'Chartreuse' into the world of contemporary hip-hop and rap.

Review: MC Homeless and Kool Keith bring totters the old and the new on this fresh collaboration. Homeless is known as a DIY touring god and of course, Kool Keith is a godfather of the weirder end of rap with a fine CV. Their work gets pressed up to eco-coloured vinyl which is made from recycled chips so results in some suitably weird wax patterns. In original form, 'Monsters' has booming low ends and menacing bass with purposeful bars and freaky synth lines that hark back to early dubstep. Ceschi and Id Obelus then feature on a remix by Noblonski that gets even more freaky. Instrumentals of each are on the flip.

Review: New York hip hop outfit Missin' Linx's debut release is notable for two reasons: firstly, it features two stone cold jams in the deep cut of "MIA" and the woody boom-bap and smooth flow of "Lock'd". But secondly, and more importantly, "MIA" made use of David McCallum's "The Edge" break before Dr Dre did. Dre's use of it on "The Next Episode" might be more famous, but now you know who did it first.

Review: Canadian-born, London-based DJ Jim Sharp strikes gold again, a mid-tempo jazz hip-hop 7" featuring the flow of Marlon Craft, crisp bars and a silky smooth tone that doesn't skip a beat. Big horns, scratching and boom-bap drums punctuate Craft's message in such an effortless way it leaves you wanting more (Don't pretend you wouldn't want an album with these two laying down the law). The flipped remix is really the star of the show, it would be more shocking if it weren't there frankly. Sharp does what he does best, chopping up and scratching like the best of them whilst a xylophone beat overlays the blown-up strings. It's that perfect blend of jazz, late 90s bling-era hip-hop and "conscious rap" (whatever you want to call it - it'll always be "abstract" to a Tribe fan). The perfect skating anthem.

It is the lead single from Main Source's Breaking Atoms album and is one of two such 45s the Brighton label, shop and archivists are putting out. Undisputed rap classic 'Looking At The Front Door' goes first and ride son nice loose drums with oft sampled bass and off course some fine MC work. On the flip is another gem, 'Let Roger Do His Thing', which is darker, more hard hitting and with some DJ scratching for extra streetwise sagger.

Looking At The Front Door (4:12)
Snake Eyes (3:33)
Review: We've been treated to a few revisits of tracks from the mighty Main Source and their seminal debut album Breaking Atoms, and now P-Vine are pressing up two of the best on a crafty little 7". 'Looking Out The Front Door' is a stone cold classic through and through, riding a dense and dusty break as Large Professor laments on love gone wrong. Despite the downcast lyrical theme, the vibe of the track is sun-kissed mellow gold, thanks in no small part to the buttery Rhodes licks. On the flip we get 'Snake Eyes', the opening cut from the album which cemented Main Source's legendary status back in 1991.

Live At The Barbeque (4:36)
Large Professor (3:11)
Review: Main Source cut a sharp figure when they broke through in the early 90s, made up of Toronto's K-Cut and Sir Scratch and New York's Large Professor. Their debut album Breaking Atoms is one of the greatest from that golden era for hip-hop, and there's no shortage of hot tracks to pick for a 7" pressing, but here Japan's P-Vine picks out the classic 'Live At The Barbeque' and backs it up with Large Professor's own self-titled joint. This is early 90s hip-hop at its best, boiled down on a handy little single for those moments when you just want the hits.

Review: A timely reissue from Souk Records of Muqata'a's brilliant self-released EP from back in 2017. Muqata'a is a key player in the Palestinian electronic scene who has enjoyed - well, earned - a fine upward career arc that has been rooted in a sense of resistance and urgency. Along the way, he's left a unique signature sound and that can be traced back to this 12". Expect glitchy electronics and whirring machine loops, Middle Eastern percussive sounds and a mystic sense of the unknown as it lurches from beat to beat in a densely detailed fashion.

Get Stupid Fresh (part 1) (3:53)
Review: Mantronix declared themselves 'King of The Beats' back in 1988 and managed to live up to the title across a fine career. The tune is of course widely credited with being the first track to ever sample the amen break so many art forms owe it a real debt of gratitude. Its blend of old school hip-hop, electro and club music is topped off with rapper MC Tee in fine form. This reissue on Lil Static comes in limited quantities and is backed with 'Get Stupid Fresh' (part 1), another classic joint from back in the day.
