Review: Dortmund producer Mr Fries was signed to Wolf Music after handing over a CD of demos at a gig. He subsequently made his first appearance on the established deep house label in February 2016. This belated follow-up is packed full of hazy, club-ready treats, from the sample-heavy deep house jazziness of "Justafan" and Moonrise Hill Material style dancefloor warmth of "Anotherbeer", to the jazz-funk influenced slickness of "Indarkdayz (feat Pete De Haan)", where snaking saxophone solos wrap themselves around a wonderfully tactile groove. Throw in a couple of head-nodding interludes (one of which is also turned into a chunk of glitchy deep house by Lab AKA Labat), and you have another essential EP from the talented German youngster.

Review: Having previously plied his trade on Ibadan's tech-house flavoured Apotek offshoot (often in the company of Jerome Sydenham), Janne Tavi has finally been given his chance on the parent label. It comes courtesy of Robert Owens collaboration "The Other Man", a sumptuous chunk of classic house dripping in life-affirming piano solos, sweeping strings, driving drumbeats and sumptuous, soulful vocals. The headline remixes come courtesy of Kerri Chandler, who serves up vocal and instrumental versions seemingly inspired by Owens' work with Larry Heard as Fingers Inc (think analogue bass, rolling drum machine rhythms and sensual electronics). Tavi's own Vocal Dub - booming, bumping and stripped back - completes an essential package.

  3. Marcel Vogel - "I Got Jesus" (Karizma Stomp dub) (7:47)
Review: Lumberjacks In Hell just keep on trucking, this time calling upon the legendary skills of Karizma in setting their latest A side alight. "Work It Out" is a fiery slice of gospel choppery, whipping up a fevered line in vocal insistence that hardly needs a rhythm section to make you move, but still has the necessary goods underneath the hood. Marcel Vogel follows a similar tact on "I Got Jesus", spacing the jam out and working a bit more groove, but certainly tapping into the same spiritually enhanced vein. Karizma then returns to make an aptly named "Stomp Dub" of the track, rounding off an absolute beast of a party record.

  4. Vison (Garden Indeep mix) (6:19)
Review: German imprint RAWAX proudly welcomes Rhythm Of Paradise to the label. It all started in late 2016 when label boss Robert Drewek travelled to Bari, Puglia to play a gig with his friend Nico Lahs. He met this extraordinary fellow by the name of Michele Lamacchia and fell in love with the '90s inspired house music he played him. There's the very 808 State sounding "Vision" complete with catchy Fairlight birdcalls, the timeless Windy City style groove of the title track: which is as emotive and as melancholy as you like it. On the flip, "Nu World" takes things deeper, assisted by some classic neon-lit elements.. and a bit of cowbell for added measure! Finally, the jacking remix of "Vision" by Garden is the EPs finest moment by far and packed full with the right amounts of bounce 'n swing.

  1. Sparkle (AJ's Dance) (7:34)

Review: The legendary Phil Asher (yes, he of Restless Soul fame) is a DJ, producer and an integral figure in London's dance music community over the last 20 years. He returns for the first time since 2015's Time & Space EP on Rekids, with a bit of help from buddy Dwala for UK based moreaboutmusic: who've released some fine grooves of late by the likes of Mike Dunn and Deep Space Orchestra. A side cut "Sparkle" (AJ's Dance) is a glorious serving of Detroit style hi-tech soul, reminiscent of "Jupiter Jazz" era Underground Resistance with its emotive and euphoric spaciness. On the flip is "Today's Tomorrow" which really brings the funk on this deep joint that's straight off of the mothership. Check it out!

Review: Leigh Darlow and Matthew Bandy have got plenty of experience in the world of deep house, both individually and as Saison. Building on a solid run of releases for Papa Records, the project makes its vinyl debut on Guesthouse with some undeniably catchy jams for the peak of the night. "Please Don't Go" is a cool slice of party fodder that hinges on a classic soul vocal hit, while "Do You" gets a little more choppy in the mix with yet more recognisable licks that should get the masses sweating and swaying without needing to resort to a hectic tempo. "The Moody Blues" lets the keys do the talking, while yet another of the hefty grooves Saison craft so well rolls out underneath.

Review: Back to 99: Flash Forward continue their impressive archive work with this killer follow up to the run of Raw Elements classics over the last few months. Heading due south from NYC to New Jersey, we're presented with an absolute pearl from Kerri Chandler's extensive collection: "My Old Friend". Timeless chords set the scene with soulful stateliness while Kerri's classic strut maintains all the energy after 18 years. "We Can" and its reprise continue Chandler's soulful thrust with more focus on those classic Jersey organs. Flash Forward aren't messing around with these represses.

  3. Da Terra
Review: Brazilian label Gop Tun hits its fourth release with the sublime tones of TYV, building on the adventurous twist on disco and house music that has typified the label to date. Lead track "Miau!" is a show stopper that rides on a sumptuous arpeggio and lashings of Latin percussion, infected with a sunny disposition but also reaching into a more mysterious corner of the dancefloor. Lauer steps up to remix the original into a more overtly cheery version loaded with his trademark warm basslines and pads, but then TYV takes control once more for simmering B-side jam "Da Terra". Pitched at a more reflective time in the party, this brooding jam celebrates Brazilian music culture in a wonderfully modern context.

  4. SSDP (6:50)
Review: Since going solo last year, former Onra collaborator Byron Blaylock has yet to put a foot wrong. Each successive 12" has brought with it a swathe of killer new jams straddling the blurred lines between soul, jazz, hip-hop, deep house and jazz-funk. There's more of the same on Leaving This Planet, the Alabama-raised producer's first EP for the mighty Eglo. So while opener "Song for a Friend" is a superior, jazz-flecked deep house bumper smothered in killer electric piano solos, the track that follows, "Mind, Body & Soul" is a squelchy tech-jazz masterpiece. It's the same story on the flip, as floor-friendly jazz-breaks ("Blow Your Mind") make way for a heady trip into intergalactic jazz-funk territory ("SSDP"). As the worn-out old saying goes, this is "all killer, no filler".

Review: It's been a while since we heard any new material from Rick Poppa Howard, the father of prodigious house talent Tevo Howard. The soul and raw, off-kilter production style runs in the family, and "Keep Holdin On" demonstrates this perfectly with its immediate warmth and unfussy arrangement. "Gimme That Love" is the real gem on this record though, toying with a rubbery bassline and a touch more atmospheric detail that makes Howards voice shine. That said, if you do require an instrumental version for any reason, the alternative cut stands proud on its own. For our money though, we'd say Howard's vocals are what makes this record special.

Review: LNS and DJ Sotofett clearly enjoy working together. "Jugando Con Fuego" is their second collaborative single in the space of six months for Sotofett's left-of-centre Wania imprint. As you'd expect from the eccentric Norwegian, each of the four available versions is notably different from the others. So, while the A-side "Club Mix" is a thrillingly loved-up, glassy-eyed trip into Latin-tinged Italian dream house territory (think Morenas covering Keys & Tronics Ensemble's "You x Me"), the "Cosmix" take is the kind of deep space ambient you'd once have expected to hear from Pete Namlook. Similarly, the tribal style "Percussion Mix" is entirely different in tone to the piano-driven "Sunrise Mix", which sounds like a long lost ambient house classic.

Review: Aus alumni Rob Glassett brings his Fold feels to Shall Not Fade: four tracks of jazz-tinged classically trained house music that nods heavily towards the Chicago sound. "Alan Whickers" pumps with a big filtered sensation that doubles up into quite a punch on the second drop, "Knickerbocker Ave" is as tasty as it sounds with a light broken feel to the drums and delicate jazz piano loop while "Doin' Bits" is grounded in more of a NYC house feel with its insistent vocal sample rises and relentless groove. Need a little 23rd century soul? Look no further than Will & Ink's Frits Wentink remix. Vibes.

Review: This man's output is anything but boring this year. Previously spotted on E-Beamz and Shall Not Fade he now joins the party at Shall Not Fade sister label Lost Palms. Once again it's straight to the floor jacking business with no care for unnecessary polish. "Different Dates" is pounding and acidic, "Lonely Valentine" chugs with a dreamier, swooning feel while "I Know You Want To" flexes some superb vocal sample artistry. Remix-wise Baltra adds a little acid silkier synths to the mix with sexy results. Say yeah.

Review: When they first emerged in the early 1990s, Lou Robinson's mysterious Scan 7 collective was compared favourably to fellow Detroit techno militants Underground Resistance (for the record, they are loosely affiliated). "Burdens Down", their first single for Belgian label Elypsia since 2001, sees them in fine form, delivering a title track that brilliantly joins the dots between Terrence Parker style gospel techno and bouncy, piano-driven house. Fittingly, Parker delivers a cheery, organ and piano heavy radio edit that pushes the track's gospel roots to the fore. The EP's other cut, "Thank You Lord", jogs even further towards New Jersey gospel house territory whilst retaining the futurist ethos and rhythmic structure of Detroit techno.

Review: Entering the fray earlier this year on Australian imprint 3BS, New Zealander Borrowed Cassettes flies across to Germany to release on Max Graef, Glenn Astro and Delfonic's ever-delectable Money Sex stable. Four cuts in all, each one driving with a deep tracky nature but the perfect balance of leftfield approach; the dusty foggy keys on "100,00", the swung percussion and otherworldly textures on "Miles", the jazzy dynamics and Detroitian insistency of "Bongo" and the stuttering technoid lunar excursion "Cue Ball" all maintain Money Sex's reputation for experimentation that still kicks ass on the floor.
