Joane Skyler - "12 Minute Excerpt"
Some Truths - "12 Minute Excerpt"
Miles Whittaker - "12 Minute Excerpt"
Mark Fell - "12 Minute Excerpt"
Review: Germany's Travel By Goods label has put together a rather special looking double EP by some of the most influential minds in electronic music with contributions from Demdike Stare man Miles Whittaker, Ralph 'Some Truths' Cumbers, Mark Fell and enigmatic NTS host and musician Joane Skyler. Each of the four artists is granted a side of a heavyweight 12" to do their thing and the results are as cutting edge as you'd expect. Drones, glitchiness and samples are the basis for sonic exploration here with Skyler, Whittaker and Some Truths all largely opting for the otherworldly approach. Fell meanwhile injects some of his expertly cultivated off kilter approach by chucking in a barrel of tumbling kicks and percussion shots. Class.

Review: Essential minimal techno reissue from the late, great Finnish electronic musician and producer, Mika Vainio. Originally released in 1994 under the unassuming O moniker, 'Metri' was way ahead of its time and continues to sound as vital as ever more than 30 years after it was composed. The album first appeared on Sahko Records, and its reincarnation arrives on the very same imprint. Echoing long Nordic winters, the sparse but powerfully immersive collection effortlessly ebbs and flows, meandering through spaced-out textures, darting into paranoid acid topography, and submerging into the depths of abstract noise. Best enjoyed from start to finish, there are, nonetheless, plenty of highlights to savour. The frantic four-to-the-floor of 'Muuntaja', the haunting bells of 'Kuvio', the relentless acid dirt of 'Hornitus', or the shimmering pitched rhythms of 'Hion'. Nothing short of seminal.

Review: One of the most essential minimal techno album ever for the first time on vinyl. New release of the classic "Metri" (Sahko 006) which was released on CD in 1993 and is now available on limited double vinyl. Written and produced by Mika Vainio except Muuntaja by Mika Vainio and Ilpo Vaisanen (better known as Pan Sonic). All tracks are studio recordings played with analogical equipment to DA-tape during summer and autumn 1993. Minimal baas bleeps and tings! Only for the headstrong. Tip!

Review: Tresor is celebrating 30 years in the game with a series of special reissue projects. This one really goes way back to almost the start, when Juan Atkins was already defining the early techno sound. For this one he linked up with Moritz von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann in 1992 for a second iteration of the 3 Men in Berlin project. The monumental results join the dots between Detroit and Berlin across a collection of timeless cuts that meld bassline funk, hypnotic minimalism and soulful machine sounds into propulsive, emotive dance floor joy. The unbridled energy and cosmic elegance of 'Jazz Is The Teacher' might just be the highlight.

Review: Innovative Dutch label Nous Klaer Audio bring two innovative artists together for their first ever collaborative work, and what work it is. Their unique techno universes come together across two sides of wax in sumptuous fashion. Amandra is on drums and Mattheis is on synths throughout, and the two warp and wrap around each other, with ever shifting tonal timbres, suggestive rhythms and thoughtful ambient all making this a deeply thoughtful and escapist record that is never less than captivating. The two friends have excelled here, so let's hoping there is more to come from them.

Review: To coincide with the twenty-fifth anniversary of Berlin club Tresor, Juan Atkins and Moritz Von Oswald have released a second Borderland album together. It begins in ominous mode, with the title track's brooding bass tones casting a long, dark shadow, but the pair soon find a way to break away from the gloom with the mesmerising chords and heavy rhythm of "Lightyears" and the wonderfully spacey Detroit techno of "Riod". Both "Odyssey" and "Merkur" push the tempo back down but keep an emphasis on hypnotic, woozy textures, snappy drums and jazzy tones, while "2600" shows that Van Oswald hasn't lost his ability to craft dub-heavy, dreamy techno.

Review: The first Audion album in ten years shows that Matthew Dear's project has lost none of its raw ferocity. This is audible on opening track "Dem", where a droning groove ensnares wooden, clunky percussion and haunted vocals in its whirlpool-like cascade and then on the gated, distorted gnawing rhythms of "Destroyer". On other occasions, Dear sounds more comfortable flirting with classic sounds; "There Was a Button" is perfectly adequate, acid-led trancey techno from the 90s and "Gut Man Commeth" revisits the edgy minimalism of early Hawtin. However, no matter what influences he mines, there is a hyperactively jittery sound aesthetic at play, audible as much on the slow-motion hoover-led grind of "Bob the Builder" as it is on the rickety minimalism of "Napkin".

Review: Berlin Atonal returned two years ago from a long hiatus, 23 years to be exact. After three tremendous festivals this decade, they now present us with their first recordings since 1984. These particular ones from the 2014 edition. Cabaret Voltaire (in this incarnation featuring only Richard H Kirk) was a true highlight and contributes "Microscopic Flesh Fragment" and "Universal Energy". One half of Demdike Stare Miles Whitaker went solo, presenting his truly unique take on techno, and the slow burning attitude of "Vagabond No. 7" is evidence of this. New Zealand's Fis also appears; rather uncategorisable as always on "Dist CL (Atonal Version)." On the third disc we have Northern Electronics main man and modern auteur Abdulla Rashim presenting two commissions from his captivating atmospheric set that year. Limited to 700 copies.

Review: Circle Of Live is a collaborative electronic project led by the Swedish techno artist Sebastian Mullaert. It aims to reevaluate the structures of performance, linking artists and their machines for improvised jams. It debuted at Baskerville Hall as part of Wales based Freerotation festival, featuring a revolving cast of musicians, who in this incarnation included such big names as Mathew Jonson, Dorisburg and Johanna Knutsson, alongside festival and label co-founder Steevio. With artists like this linking up, you can just imagine what kind of magic they'd possibly conjure up and we can assure you it's absolutely sublime. These five excerpts from the live performance capture some of their most dynamic and spellbinding moments.

Review: Released on lovely transparent blue vinyl, the fourth volume of Figure's Hardspace series offers six fresh reinterpretations of Len Faki's favourite tracks under his staunchly underground Hardspace alias. Josh Wink's 'Sixth Sense' gets a powerful low-end rework while Aoki Takamasa's minimalist dub transforms into a high-energy and peak-time slammer. DJ Yoav B's iconic 'Energize' reaches new rave heights with its relentless groove and Huxley's dark take on 'Weapon 3' comes on with explosive force. Tuttle's 'Function' ups the intensity with Faki's signature claps and sirens while Mike Parker's '90s classic 'Shakuhachi Two' gains extra drive with Hardspace's propulsive percussion for a dynamic techno workout.

Review: Mike Dred's contributions to acid and rave culture overall are monumental, although he's largely operated outside any specific scene trends (perhaps excepting the misfit community orbiting Rephlex Records). In 2013 he dropped a fresh salvo of lysergic bombs in the form of Overmind, which has been dutifully scrubbed up for a fresh pressing on silver wax courtesy of De:tuned, one of the labels keeping the braindance dream alive. From the jacking 303 workout of 'Sociosexual' to the wet-as-you-like mutant electro of 'Psychoatomic', this is a collection which manages to be both immediate and utterly idiosyncratic. No one does it quite like Mike Dred.

Overflowing with body jerking industrial, raw acid/techno, the album hints of the warehouse sound of the late '90s and the caustic spirit of EBM. From opener "Cru" to "One Terminal", the eight tracks thread together; each starting point completely open, each new step informed by the last, shaped by emotion, inspiration and time.

Review: Richard Smith, AKA L/F/D/M, made his debut on Optimo Trax in 2013, with an EP bristling with analogue acid and robust machine jams. Last year's follow-up for Clan Destine Records, LHF 3, was similarly minded. This debut album switches things around a little, supplementing his usual hard-wired, hypnotic rhythms, motorik attitude and hazy melodies with a gaggle of more experimental cuts (see the freaky ambience of "New X" and new wave-era shuffle of "Book of Five"). It's not a dramatic stylistic leap, of course, but one that makes perfect sense.

A collection of greyscale and experimental cuts on the more jagged and angular fringes of techno are forcefully executed on this one. From the brooding industrial breaks of "Loop 002", to cerebral four-to-the-floor pummellers such as 'DAT', through to Regis-like broken beat body bashers like 'Project1' and the heaving dronescape of the title track - this one is heavy duty so handle with caution!

Review: Paul Mac is one of the grandmasters of electronic music, he has had over 100 releases on more than thirty labels and DJ gigs on all 5 continents. He is either in Brazil, Venezuela and Japan a superstar and proves with "Defined By Association" that he is one of the most respected producers of our time. He delivers a classic masterpiece showing that he manages to make excellent tracks in all genres of electronic music from house to tribal beats, from rave anthems to sophisticated atmospheric ambient tracks . He also show his versatility in the studio by having a masterful skill with the use of vocal samples. His intro is hypnotic and it neatly ushers in the mood of the groovy sound of the first three tracks of the album - "Seatdown", "First Mode" and "Happy Pill" which all create an excellent mood with their Detroit-orientated smooth grooves. There is also heavy inspiration from world music sounds with tribal drums and interesting programming always playing a part. "Cut & Slow" is Paul Mac's oral sex anthem for the eternity in which a sexy girls voice explains everything you want to know about the topic. The track "Evolving" leads us to the second part of the album which gets more energetic from track to track. "Non stop dancer" is a kicking tribal house anthem. "Big dancing girl" could be a hit on the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro and the "Deck Chair Drums" is equally solid. The last two tracks "Braincandy Faction" and "The Final Mix" are a superbly contrasting softer touch and round off the masterpiece very nicely.

Review: Six years have passed since Maceo gave the world his debut album Life Index. In that time he's solidified his status as one of techno's most untouchable soul men who's unapologetically ungoverned by tempos or boxes or any type of formula. He's also become a father, which is what this (and last year's "Journey To Solar") are all about. Rich in sentiment, hope and fear, each cut reveals a deeper layer of Maceo: the star-gazing optimism of "Kepler's Journey", the Bristolesque industrial dub soul of "Indigo", the careful countering of vulnerable emotion and roboticism on "Was Away My Tears", the list goes on. This is Maceo at his most heartfelt and arresting.

Review: Maceo Plex has managed to pivot this alias from accessible house cuts with creamy basslines into a far more interesting project that explores astral techno with a range of different influences from sci-fi to wave to the sounds of the 80s. That has never been better exemplified than on '93, his expansive album on his Lone Romantic label. It features emo-anthems like 'Revision', disco-techno stompers like 'Go Back' and chunky robot-tech like 'All Night'. Plenty of guests from Mystic Bill to label mate AVNU Jane's Addiction frontman and alternative music legend Perry Farrell all help add a wide world of sound to the electronic core.

Review: Paolo Macri references self-sabotage in the text accompanying this new album, saying it can be "a devious and deadly mechanism of the mind that creates obstacles on the path to one's goals." He must have overcome this however as this is a record that lock you in from the start. Autosabotaggio is dark and tense minimal and techno with hints of Italo melodies, EBM and dark disco adding to the overall mood. These are cuts designed purely for club deployment and will not disappoint when used right.
