Review: DVDE is an alias that reminds us of the TV wind-up merchant Phonejacker, and there sure is plenty of jack to the beast cooked up by this emerging artist. Their Ultralucid Paris EP is an old school house workout that starts with the acid-laced title track with its early Chicago drums and dark vocals. 'Good Morning England' then winds up the energy levels with more wonky synths and brain-frying acid lines and then the EP closes with flip-side jam 'Dramacid' featuring the one and only San Proper. It's an uneven and sleazy house cut with crunchy drums and San's vocals and funky guitar riffs bringing to life the prickly 303s.

Review: For Now I Am Winter is Olafur Arnalds' third full-length studio album. His earlier albums, soundtracks and EPs, have been released through the Berlin based cult label Erased Tapes. Building and expanding on his previous more minimalist work, Arnalds' new album is his first to involve a full orchestra (co-arranged by Nico Muhly) and a vocalist (Agent Fresco lead singer Arn). Three shorter pieces - 'Sudden Throw', Nils Frahm's rework of 'For Now I Am Winter', and 'Brim' first signalled the emergence of the album, which now hears a full length release, with additional sonic pearls including 'This Place Was A Shelter' and 'Words Of Amber' standing out as especial highlights.

Review: Hot Creations comes through with another slab of hot house heat, this time from Bruno Furlan who brings plenty of firey tribalism and Latin energy to his offerings. There are two to choose from with 'La Fiesta' kicking off on the A-side. It's a big, bulky mix of physical kicks and chattery percussive patterns that are coarse and dry and perfect for getting the club in a sweat. Flip it over and you'll find 'Give Me That Bass' which is less straight up and has a little more bounce in its drums. They're rubbery and taught with a fiery vocal up top, plenty of wild effects and a bassline that never lets up.

Review: Trumpeter Kenny Dorham has a wealth of albums to his name and many of them are regarded as classics. This one, Jazz Contrasts, was recorded in 1957 and released on the Riverside label. NewLand now has the rights to a full reissue and presents it on nice heavyweight vinyl with an insert. Across just six tracks it strikes an indelible style with all of the music newly remastered. It features Sonny Rollins on tenor sax and Betty Glamann on harp while Hank Jones plays piano and Oscar Pettiford plays bass with the legend Max Roach on sticks.

Review: Athens-based garage rock outfit Cosmic Shadows follow up on a strong local presence and a breadcrumb trail of digital releases to deliver their debut album. It's a catchy, infectious kind of sound which takes some cues from surf and indie, all bottled in a dirty receptacle that gives the band an instantly classic, timeless feel. From the tap-along jaunt of 'Satisfy' to the glassy-eyed, low slung trip of 'Try' this is a band who know precisely the sound they're aiming for, and they nail it with ease. Just watch out for the rockabilly undertones of 'Devil's Game', which runs at a decent clip and means business in the baddest - aka best - ways.
