Review: ***B-STOCK: Torn sleeve, otherwise in excellent working condition***

London Techno Collective's Steve Loss aka Catharsis returns to Berlin's Zhark Recordings for his third release and first long-player. Terrifying Shadows features eight tracks of 'hydraulic techno func (sic) .. and roaring drill mechanisms' that altogether make for some seriously difficult listening. Such disturbing titles as 'Into The warm Embrace Of Deviancy', 'It's So Easy To Corrupt A Soul', as well as 'The Tao Of The Scarred' or by far our favourite 'Tasting Hate From The Cup Of Gods' give you a fair warning of what to expect on this eight track opus: brutalist experimental techno delivered in uncompromising style. Not for the faint of heart!

Review: LILA has got five or six albums of artful ambient dropping all in quick succession and this is a third from Ludvig Cimbrelius, who has dropped one under his Eternell alias, one as Abraco de Vapor, and one under this, his oldest moniker, Purl. He also works as Illuvia and with all his projects he has mastered the art of sonic daydreaming and musical journeying. Ancient Skies is a record packed with a more intense, textural, heavy style of ambient that builds tensions and in some places has subtle implied rhythms. It makes for an involving listen that is much more than simple background music.

Review: Modeselektor have never been all that keen on looking back, so it's little surprise to find that they've chosen to celebrate 10 years of their Monkeytown label with an album of brand new cuts. As you'd expect, it's rather good. As well as their own "My Friend The 201" - a rush-inducing fusion of glittering, star burst electronics and weighty bottom-end pressure - highlights include the insanely heavy warehouse flex of Shed's "Rigger", the off-kilter techno breeziness of Redshape's "Dirt Box", a skittish and jumpy workout from German veterans Mouse On Mars and a woozy chunk of experimental ambient/IDM fusion from Anstam.

Review: Robert Hood is techno's undisputed minimal master, but previous instalments of Nighttime World - especially the jazz-fuelled inaugural release in 1995 on Cheap - have afforded him the opportunity to go off script and indulge his conceptual whims. Will he do the same again on Motor? The answer is a resounding yes. Inspired by Julien Temple's 2010 documentary Requiem For Detroit?, which charts the fall and decline of America's former car manufacturing hub, the album is full of references to the effects of man's interaction with technology. If Kraftwerk's shimmering Man Machine was a testament to the benefits of humans harnessing technology, then Motor is the gloomy riposte, emerging from the rubble of a shattered metropolis to tell this sad but compelling tale and crucially, to offer some hope for the future.

Review: Modular synthesizer fetishist Luke Abbott apparently got the inspiration for this sophomore set during time spent as the "musician in residence" at the Wysing Arts Centre in Cambridgeshire back in 2012. Named after a piece of woodland close by, it sees Abbott using live analogue electronics to try and create a "natural life cycle" over the album's nine tracks. Interestingly, it differs from his impressive debut album in a number of ways; while Holkham Drones touched on krautrock, drone and intense ambience, Wysing Forest doffs a cap to spiritual jazz, Terry Riley and ambient explorer Pete Namlook. It's a beguiling set, all told, and one that constantly veers between crunchy bursts of intense IDM and becalmed, breathtaking ambience.

Review: Postal Service member Jimmy Tamborello has always had a knack for manipulating sound. Sometimes, this has meant subverting accepted genres - lo-fi rock, for example, or IDM. At others, his approach is much more melodious, mixing skewed sounds and popping electronic rhythms with elements of pop. Human Voice, his first album in two years, continues in the latter vein. By and large, it's a thoroughly positive affair, with cheery electronic melodies and cut-up, pitched down vocal samples riding cheeky rhythms and slack-tuned drums. As a result, Human Voice is hard to pin down, being neither straight up ambient or IDM. Regardless, it's a wonderfully evocative and entertaining set.

Review: Thus far, Vatican Shadow (AKA techno misfit Dominick Fenrow) has built a reputation as a politically charged maverick, delivering a slew of limited edition 12" singles and cassettes that flit between collage-based oddities, clandestine compositions and intense techno workouts. Remember Your Black Day is being billed as "his first proper album", and sees him shift focus towards a more listener-friendly sound. Of course, he's lost none of his anger and rage - check the breathless intensity of the title track, for starters - but there are more world-weary melodies and subtle musical touches amongst the bleak atmospherics (see standout "Tonight Saddam Walks Amidst Ruins"). Hardcore fans may see it as a compromise, but that would be harsh; in truth, it's arguably his best work to date.

The Walls Are Closing In
Review: Switching stance from his bass-weighted mutant stepping as King Cannibal, Dylan Richards is now developing his own murky foray into 4/4 steeped in dread-filled atmospherics and plush sound design under the House Of Black Lanterns banner. With smatterings of electro and footwork, a M_nus-styled economy of arrangements and a spread of vocal turns from Leni Ward, Rudi Zygadlo and Juakali, Kill The Lights is operating on many levels while weaving its own gothic vision of what pop-inflected dance music can reach for in 2013. There's no doubt that Richards has succeeded in realising his vision for a beyond-the-grave listening experience that can still be accessible to a range of listeners.

Living Leaving (part 2)
Review: Quite how this 12" on FXHE from the unheralded Tom Bugs came about isn't clear, though we'd like to think Omar S got chatting to the Bristol based producer and builder of Modular synths over a pint of Guinness in a Stokes Croft pub before a gig. Whilst few people would fancy the unenviable task of following up the huge recent LP from Omar S, Bugs shows enough ingenuity on this Living Leaving 12" to make him a perfect fit for FXHE. Nestling in at the dubby end of the FXHE spectrum, like a sleepy eyed Luke Hess, both parts of "Living Leaving" demonstrate that Bugs mastery of obvious modular synths is also blessed with an innate understanding of lo-fi melodics. Indeed there's a freeform sense to how they unfurl which hints that Bugs committed these straight to tape. Another fine FXHE transmission!

The Man Machine
Review: 'The Man-Machine' is closer to the sound and style that would define early new wave electro-pop. Less minimalistic in its arrangements and more complex and danceable in its underlying rhythms. Like its predecessor, 'Trans-Europe Express', there is the feel of a divided concept album, with some songs devoted to science fiction-esque links between humans and technology, often with electronically processed vocals ("The Robots," "Spacelab," and the title track); others take the glamour of urbanization as their subject ("Neon Lights" and "Metropolis"). Plus, there's "The Model," a character sketch that falls under the latter category but takes a more cynical view of the title character's glamorous lifestyle. More pop-oriented than any of their previous work, the sound of 'The Man-Machine' in particular among Kraftwerk's oeuvre had a tremendous impact on the cold, robotic synth pop of artists like Gary Numan, as well as Britain's later new-romantic movement.

Review: Some late 90s classic techno-house from Aril Brikha's gets reimagined by Deetron, Octave One and Jori Hulkkonen. The story goes that the first time Brikha never rated "Groove La Chord" that highly, and the first time he heard it played in a club was two years after he made it - by one Derrick May. The track went on to become a favourite among house and techno lovers alike, and here Deetron dips it in a contemporary sheen, while "Read Only Memory" gets tweaked over on the flip by Turbo stalwart Jori Hulkkonen and underground Detroit heads Octave One. Killer release!

Fresh from issuing Shelflife 3, the tenth Calibre album of a decorated production career, Martin now graces The Nothing Special with some Calibre material in the shape of the Trimming 12". Mastered by Keith Tenniswood, Calibre shows off his contemplative side with the dub influenced title track whilst the supple basslines and intricate rhythms of "Getter Go" nudges proceedings towards the dancefloor.

Review: Germany's Transmigration serves up another trip back to the future here as they transport us immediately to the middle of some outdoor rave in '94. The latest reissue focusses on Projective Vision's 'Apocalypse,' which is a trippy wormhole techno number with frosty synths and bleeping melodies never letting up over the urgent drums. It's high speed and high thrills, so it make sense that on the reverse 'Change' brings you back down to earth with amore slow motion acid techno workout that is comforting and warm. This is very much a record of two halves, but both are well deserving of their place on your shelves.

La Neta (4:36)
Review: Somewhat remarkably, Mind Control marks long-serving techno and experimental electronica producer Christian Vogel's first solo 12" for almost five years. It's well worth picking up though, because it contains a trio of complex, creepy, clandestine and occasionally cacophonous cuts that are amongst his most impactful productions of recent times. Opener 'Acceleration Morphosis' is atmospheric and mind-mangling, with unsettling drone tones and horror-inspired ambient chords clustering around crackling noise and distant (and metallic-sounding) percussion hits. Vogel drags it towards the dancefloor on the accompanying 'Mind Control' version, re-imagining it as an intense and paranoid slab of spine-tingling techno. Arguably best of all though is 'La Neta', a throbbing and bass-heavy affair that sits somewhere between Autechre and the polyrhythmic techno vibes of the Livity Sound label.

Review: There is no bigger label in the business techno world than Drumcode, and one of the CEos of the sound has long been Italian Luigi Madonna. He links up with Roberto Capuano for a trio of hard hitting cuts that are desperate to be played in huge warehouses as soon as the lockdown is lifted. 'Mad World' is up first with its slapping drums and frazzled hits. 'System Alert' brings big alarm sound and wall rattling kick drums and 'Headquarter' closes down with a dystopian mood, eye watering kick drum pressure and plenty of techno darkness.

Review: One of the only positives to come from the difficult last year and all the various lockdowns is the music that has been made. A case in point is this project from Tactil, a new project from Madrid artists Kawn and F-on. They are responsible for the fourth Antimatter release, which is heavily inspired by deep dub technicians from the 90s like Gas and Porter Ricks. The four tunes are hugely immersive, widescreen and atmospheric and has subtly evolving rhythms, modulated synth details and an eerie mood thanks to the various delays, reverbs and LFO modulations strung out in each tune.

Bart Skills does not muck about on his 'Solid State,' laying down driving kicks and machine gun synths. Alex Lentini & STOMP BOXX then bust your speakers with their distorted synth loops and rock solid kicks and lastly SAMA takes you 'Into The Abyss' on shuffling deep techno drums with mind melting motifs looping ad infinitum up top. Three different sounds, all equally effective.

Adam Beyer's popular imprint has already delivered a swathe of must-check releases this year, and this collaborative outing from Pig & Dan and Victor Ruiz is another that label fans would do well to take note of. A-side 'Consciousness' is particularly potent, with the trio adding gnarly, mind-melting, dark room-ready riffs to a throbbing, trance-inducing techno groove. If tech-trance/neo-trance isn't your thing, turn to the flip. They're you'll find the moody and stomping big room techno of 'Music Takes You' - all doom-laden stabs and kick-drum driven heaviness - and the more melodious, colourful and rushing peak-time bliss of 'Silk', whose lengthy breakdowns are likely to send shivers down the spines of suitably refreshed dancers.

Veerus - "I Know" (6:59)
Review: Adam Beyer's esteemed Drumcode imprint continues on with the ever reliable A Sides series, and we're now up to Vol 10 - the third of a five part vinyl series. The first side belongs to Victor Ruiz's expression in peak time dancefloor drama called 'Love Story' where a breathtaking female vocals plays centre stage alongside a snarling Reese bassline and typically tough as nails techno rhythms. On the flip, more warehouse style aesthetics await on Ilija Djokovic's adrenalised 'Equilibrium' which will no doubt have the punters trancing out under the strobe light, as well as Veerus' euphoric main room offering 'I Know' closing out an impressive package.

First Flake (7:41)
The Extract (6:25)
Review: Supremely prolific artist SNAD is back with another of his majestic new EPs. It manages to serve up a fresh new take on tech house grooves with precise sound synthesis that is deep and cinematic. 'The Underlying Granular Structure Of Spacetime' is a freeform cut with flapping kicks and hits, nebulous sci-fi pads and muffled vocals from another dimension. Then there is the crisp neon melody and lithe drums of 'Thaw,' 'First Flake' with its deeper drum work and icy cool hi hats and the fantastic closer 'The Extract.' This might be the tune of the EP with its flurry of delicate breakbeats and off-grid synths.

Review: Six releases in and Michigander label head Brian Kage teams up with the legendary French Techno producer, Taho, aka David Jacopin. The electronic music world knows to put respect on the Motor City, but the "Detroit EP" represents a fusion, emphasizing l'accent aigu - not a typo or spec on your screen that needs cleaning. Between Kage and Taho, their production pedigree includes releases for labels like FXHE, Planet-E, Delsin, F.Comm, and more, so it's no surprise the pairing makes for a masterfully produced EP covering the spectrum of Detroit house and techno sounds, with an added deft touch from its French connection.
