Phase Conclution
Review: Jan Svensson's recent debut on Biorhythm with a double pack of functional yet deadly productions under his rarely used Villa Abo guise was a big hit in the Juno office, but those out there fiending for some new material from the Borft under the much loved Frak guise will be pleased at the sight of Ultrasaw. This being Frak and this being Borft, the six track Ultrasaw cocks a snoot at convention by including the rare sight of a Frak remix, with Dave ID's record label presumably not happy with how the INXS style cock rock of "Soul Reprise" was given a deep throttle by Frak. We know which version we prefer! The rest is equally as good, with the gloopy primitive electronics of "Storming Vermona Europa" a particular highlight.

Frau Bowie (6:55)
Review: We had to double check that this was indeed the first time the mighty Luke Eargoggle had graced Jan Svensson's Borft label, such is their shared DIY ethos and heritage within Scandinavian electronics. But here we are with Train To Illusion, the Borft debut for Luke Eargoggle and a wonderful four track foray into the classic electro sound the Swede has become renowned for. "Deep Sea Reminder" is a delight that could easily snap on for a lot longer than its eight minute reminder, but the record doesn't stay on this hopeful note throughout. Indeed there is a ruff and ruggedness to "Optical Illusion" which will probably appeal to the Helena Hauff's of the world, whilst "Frau Bowie" could easily be mistaken for a Panzerkreuz b side.

For Whom The Bell (6:13)
Drinker Min Kaf (6:17)
Review: Borft has been all about cutting edge electronic music since 1987 (!) and it is now with fellow countrymen Andreas Tilliander and Stefan Thir as Kondens, throwing down some well-crafted lo-fi techno yet hi-tech at the same time. The thumping toms in tandem with the overdriven kick of "Bug Miff" truly beat you into submission while "Manolito" is all epic acid that's got Tilliander all over it accompanied by Thor's relentless tom drum workout yet again. "For Whom The Bell" is the first track on the flip and it a more minimal and funker affair with a razor sharp bassline, rusty hi-hats and reverberated white noise hiss for extra sinister effect. Finally "Drinker Min Caf" is more pumping minimal with a rolling bassline, tight and shuffling rhythm section and trippy as hell zaps and bleeps flying all over the place.

Review: In terms of mental Swedish techno reissues, you can't do better this week than this reappraisal of the Frak and Smea split LP from Borft Records. Initially released jointly by Jan Svensson's label and TE Records back in 2003, Split was only one of two releases through Borft that year; given the avalanche of material the label has released over the years such a fact should not be overlooked and listening to the material it's understandable why this period in the Borft discography is described as "very silent and strange". Tobias Ekberg's SMEA project lines the A Side with two sprawling freeform new beat in "Koala Grip" and "Gott Medd Kaffe" bookending a pair of abstracted compositions. On the Frak side, "Svett 2" finds Jan Svensson and friends dabbling in pitch shifting minimal sounds, whilst "Malad" is much closer to the deranged electronics we all now love them for.

Nerve Netting (9:44)
Progressive Latitude (7:29)
Major Attack (7:23)
Review: Frak must be amongst the most consistent artists in techno. Some 26 years after launching their Borft Records imprint, they're still churning out bizarre 12" exercises in grotty Scandinavian techno, with very little sign of their notoriously high quality threshold slipping. Realismo delivers three more winding, twisting analogue treats, kicking off with ten-minutes of mid tempo, acid-flecked, heads-down freakery (the brilliantly icy, but also strangely intense "Nerve Netting"). "Progressive Lattitude" is a little fuzzier and more distorted, but explores similar sonic territory. Things get more hectic on closer "Major Attack", which is a typically wild interpretation of acid house with additional razor-sharp electronics.

100 Hours
Nov41
Review: Swede Daniel Andreasson has been tickling our fancy with his particular brand of clandestine techno and world-weary electronica since 2009. In that time, he's released some inspired material on Tabernacle, Skudge and Zodiac 44. Here he makes an appearance on Frak's long-running Borft label. As you'd expect, Pressure ticks a number of boxes. While there's plenty of loopy, atmospheric techno - see the title track and the winding, woozy, slightly psychedelic "100 Hours" - the EP's strongest moments are arguably those where he takes a slightly stranger path. Opener "Inside" - a kind of dark ambient piece interspersed with a distant bassline and occasional heavily filtered rhythms - is particularly special, while closer "Nov 41" is a near perfect chunk of slowed-down Detroit futurism.

Review: Ah that feeling when you pick up a random Borft record, start digging for information and are rewarded with yet another Scandinavian working prodigiously at the margins of DIY electronics. Nimam Spregleda is the solo endeavour of Helsingborg based Henrik Bengtsson, who also moonlights as part of the wonderfully named Goz Mongo Alliance trio (who of course have previously contributed to Borft sublabel UFO Mongo). Prior to this No Future mini LP, Bengtsson has largely committed the Nimam Spregleda material to rare cassette releases and it's nice to see the Swede sticking to his DIY guns across the seven tracks. "Old drum machines and crappy synths" is all Bengtsson uses apparently and it all sounds like a frazzled Felix Kubin. Great primitive electronics for the more daring selectors!!

Review: The rather simply titled Mini LP finds Swedish producer Andreas Tilliander debut on Frak's Borft label in fine fashion. There's a sense of inevitability behind this record with Tilliander and Frak drawn ever closer across a number of releases this year - Tilliander undertook mastering duties on the trio's under rated Erase LP whilst both featured on the debut transmission from SKUM, the new label set up jointly by Skudge and Kontra Music. The six tracks here find Tilliander deviating from the Roland centric noodling of the producer's excellent TM404 LP from earlier this year, in favour of a quirky take on 90s acid and techno that feels wholly appropriate for the Borft label. Don't sleep!

Water Galaxy (11:45)
Review: Frak man Jan Svensson has been busy of late, serving up solo singles under the Villa Abo alias for Kontra-Musik, Noise In My Head and Radio Lundberg. Here he heads home to the Borft Records imprint he set up way back in the '80s, in the process serving up two extended techno workouts. A-side "Madrid" is particularly potent, with zippy acid stabs, cyclical synth riffs and razor-sharp acid lines riding a heavy, funk-fuelled techno groove. He takes a markedly different approach on "Water Galaxy", which sounds like vintage Underground Resistance or Derrick May enjoying a breezy Swedish summer. It's much more fluid and positive than the more aggressive A-side, and arguably the pick of two top-notch cuts.

Studio Styrka Report (Cut Two)
Love Surrender (Popper)
Review: Having been coaxed into revisiting the Villa Abo project for a DJ tool heavy release on Paul Du Lac's Bio Rhythm label earlier this year, Frak main man Jan Svensson delivers more for his own Borft Empire. Love Surrender does however deviate from the precision tooled functionality of A Ruff Swing Below, adopting a more synth-focused approach that will resonate with Frak obsessives everywhere. The main thrust of this record is four different variants of "Love Surrender" which comes in Wrong Side, Baby Electro and Popper form as well as the original with the strident, fuzzy stomp of the latter perhaps the pick. They are complemented by two further "synthetic messages from Studio Styrka" with the collective results easily amongst some of the most compelling Borft material in recent times.

Review: With just a few scattered limited releases to his name over the last eleven years, Daniel Wendler's project of electronica studies makes a logical addition to the Borft catalogue with their love of fringe sonics from fringe operators. There's wonderfully tweaked acid aplenty, a healthy amount of leftfield electro pondering and plenty of fearless Scandinavian attitude in all these tracks, with the wild tones of "RPC" standing out particularly. "No Limits To Pleasure" comes on with squelchy Drexciyan tones aplenty, while "After The Orgy" gets more romantic and dramatic in its ways. With three tracks per side, there's an abundance of quality music to get stuck into here, especially if you dig the sound of lo-fi electro being played perfectly rough.
