This DJ Tron (Mike Mory) isn't the speedcore artist we all know and love, but rather a lesser-known Swiss Italo and disco collector turned mixer turned deft producer, who took the classic route out from spraying graffiti and rapping into making breaks. 'Cloudburst' is simply one of many 7"s from Tron to hit our shelves this year; the eponymous A-side lands square in the middle of live and electronic, quantizing yet grooving up crisp live-dubbed drums and easy sax. Review: Denny Zeitlin is a US jazz maestro perhaps best known for his work on the Invasion Of The Body Snatchers soundtrack. On this release for Now Again, we get treated to an unreleased 1969 LP he recorded with Mel Graves and George Marsh, previously only available as an acetate or limited private pressing. It's a powerful and expansive work with Zeitlin's limber piano playing up front, but reaching across styles in a fusion which gets seriously funky in some places, positively cosmic in others. The title track alone is a 12-minute opus which will take you far and wide, like all the best jazz should.

Review: Wendell Harrison is an icon of Detroit's jazz heritage, not least as part of the Tribe collective. Following his collaborative album with Phil Ranelin in 1972, he stepped out as bandleader for the confrontational An Evening With The Devil, bringing a level of controversy and aggressive playing which undoubtedly ruffled feathers on its release. Review: Enja Records was founded in Munich in the early 70s by jazz devotees Matthias Winckelmann and Horst Weber. Given a co-sign by the always on-point BBE and IF Music founder Jean-Claude, the label is now enjoying a retrospective compilation which seeks to celebrate the best of their golden years. Featuring performances by John Stubblefield, Bobby Hutcherson, Harold Land, Don Cherry, Cecil McBee and Pharoah Sanders collaborator Marvin Hannibal Peterson to name but a few, this collection provides a great jumping-off point for Enja's rich and diverse back catalogue. It may only be an introduction to a vast pool of music, but it's curated with authority by a dedicated head, so you know you're getting a shortcut to the best the label has to offer.

Review: The Tone Poet series from Blue Note continues apace with this reissue of Kenny Burrell's masterful self-titled album. As guitarists go, Burrell has a sound which dances with nimble eloquence few could even dream of matching. Hear him cavorting across 'Be Happy' and it's quite hard to imagine the notes were played by human hands. Despite that, it's also a wonderfully delicate, rounded sound which more than makes it worthy of an entry into this series - just marvel at that tone, captured across a variety of spots in New York in the spring of '56.

Review: Blue Jazz's on going Tone Poet Series - which is about reissuing classic jazz on heavyweight, audiophile quality vinyl - throws out another gem here with the Hank Mobley classic Soul Station. Hank started out as a pianist before moving to the tenor sax aged 16. He put plenty of emotion and intensity into every note he played and during the years 1955-1970 he fronted more than 25 Blue Note albums as well as being a sideman on many others. This record captures him at the peak of his powers with a lyrical playing style and length, passionate solos.

Review: Translated into English, The Novice is a 1975 Italian movie about a young chap returning to his provincial hometown to visit his dying uncle, who is being cared for by a night nurse who also happens to be a novice nun, played by the remarkably beautiful and seductive Gloria Guida. An erotic comedy, you can guess where the plot goes, but the casting of Lionel Stander as ageing relative is interesting.
The US actor was memorialised in Eric Bentley's play Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been after his famously uncooperative testimony before the House of Un-American Activities, responsible for exposing communists in the early days of the Cold War. Subsequently blacklisted from TV, film, and radio in his homeland, he eventually moved to Europe, first setting up shop in London, where he would make flicks for decades, often pretty obscure ones. This is one, and the music is wonderfully kitsch, Wurlitzer-packed elevator stuff, so if that's your bag so is this.

Review: Yet another first time reissue of a classic, Mongo Santamaria's 'Sofrito'. Don't be confused by the pico de gallo on the front cover; this isn't a salsa album, but rather a career-defining jazz, Afro-Cuban music and funk selection of delights. First released in 1976, it was the master conguero's (conga player's) most defining album, and now gets a proper remaster by Kevin Gray.

Review: In a stroke of ingenuity Noori found a neck of a guitar whilst rummaging through a Port Sudan scrapyard along the Red Sea Coast in the 90s. Using their welding talents they fixed it onto a traditional four stringed tambour, creating what may be the only tambo-guitar hybrid in the world. Beja Power! Is a love letter to the Beja culture, inherently political and almost erased by the former Sudanese leader. This historically rich niche of Afro-Jazz is both nostalgic and mystical. Elements of surf rock, electric blues and psychedelia can be heard in these instrumental tracks, a 6-track capsule of a powerful identity nearly lost to the sands of time. Noori & His Dorpa Band's style is authentic and evocative and is a joyful proclamation and demonstration of the magic that is Beja sound and aesthetic.

Review: Greg Foat is something of a musical polymath, with his various solo and collaborative albums touching on everything from spiritual jazz, library music and soundtrack sounds, to Balearic beats, jazz-funk and deep house. On Psychosynthesis, his first solo set for two years, he largely keeps things warm, chilled and dreamy, joining the dots between horizontal jazz-funk, exotica, Balearica, and sensuous sun-down sounds with the aid of a vast battery of analogue and modular synthesizers. The results are predictably impressive, with the album's many highlights including the spacey, slo-mo shuffle of 'Underwater Fantasy', the throbbing, Sun Palace-esque starry jazz-funk of 'Psychosynthesis (Part 1)', the gaseous ambient drift of 'The Green Odyssey' and the Wally Badarou style warmth of 'The Investigation'.

Review: Damo Suzuki was with seminal krautrock outfit Can from 1970 to 1973, lending his vocal talents to albums such as Tago Mago, Future Days and Ege Bamyasi. Exactly fifty years after the latter LP, you can hear him on this new recording described as being 'derived from fantasy'.
